Computational And Ai Tools For Understanding Telomere-Associated Cancer Mechanisms, Eleni Adam Aug 2026

Computational And Ai Tools For Understanding Telomere-Associated Cancer Mechanisms, Eleni Adam

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Telomeres are the protective caps of the human chromosomes and are critical for genome stability. Dysfunctional telomeres caused by their erosion with age and cell proliferation as well as by defects in their maintenance is a major early event leading to genome changes and cancer. Subtelomeres possess the critical role of regulating adjacent telomeres. Due to their complex repeat structure and high variance from one person to another, these areas have not been analyzed in detail. We present a set of computational and machine learning tools to aid in the understanding of subtelomere structure and its rearrangements in cancer.

Lgbtq People's Lives Post-Incarceration: A Multi-Method Study, Hayley Jackey Aug 2026

Lgbtq People's Lives Post-Incarceration: A Multi-Method Study, Hayley Jackey

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

LGBTQ people are disproportionately targeted by the criminal legal system and overrepresented in the carceral system. Despite current research in queer criminology examining the impacts of the carceral system on the community, there is a dearth of literature examining LGBTQ people’s experiences or identity disclosure once released from the Prison Industrial Complex and into the Prisoner Reentry Industry. Using unique methodologies of photo-elicitation interviews and in-depth interviews, the current study examines how ten formerly incarcerated LGBTQ people navigate returning to society post-incarceration. The study found two distinct experiences. The first group was selective about who they shared their LGBTQ identity …

Tagged J/Ψ Photoproduction Near Threshold, Mariana Tenorio Pita Aug 2026

Tagged J/Ψ Photoproduction Near Threshold, Mariana Tenorio Pita

Physics Theses & Dissertations

J/ψ production (heavy quarkonium in general) is sensitive to the gluonic content of the nucleon. Recent theoretical studies have suggested that near-threshold J/ψ production is sensitive to the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the nucleon, which parametrize the matrix elements of the QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT). The energy-momentum tensor of the nucleon encodes its mechanical properties through the gravitational form factors, which give access to quantities such as the mass radius and pressure distribution of the proton. Previous J/ψ electroproduction measurements were either performed near-threshold at very low Q2 (in the quasi-real photoproduction regime) or far above threshold at …

Multi-Particle Reactions In Lattice Field Theories: From Euclidean To Quantum Computations, Marco Antonio Carrillo Bernal Aug 2026

Multi-Particle Reactions In Lattice Field Theories: From Euclidean To Quantum Computations, Marco Antonio Carrillo Bernal

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Amplitudes of multi-particle processes provide a probe of the dynamics described by relativistic quantum field theories. In the context of quantum chromodynamics, these amplitudes encode the way in which quarks and gluons are bound together by the strong nuclear force to form hadrons and govern their interactions. The non-perturbative nature of the strong interactions complicates the study of hadronic amplitudes from first principles. The most effective way of studying hadronic reactions non-perturbatively is the numerical framework known as lattice quantum chromodynamics. This method relies on theoretical formalisms that establish relations between numerical observables, such as finite-volume energy levels and matrix …

Macroscopic Classical And Quantum Models Of Inverse Compton Scattering, Emerson Penn Rogers Aug 2026

Macroscopic Classical And Quantum Models Of Inverse Compton Scattering, Emerson Penn Rogers

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Inverse Compton sources — in which a relativistic electron beam scatters a laser pulse to produce tunable, collimated, high-energy radiation—have emerged as among the most promising compact radiation sources, with applications ranging from nuclear photonics to medical and nanoscale imaging and metrology. The most viable current tabletop configuration couples laser-wakefield acceleration with inverse Compton scattering, producing GeV-scale electron beams over millimeter distances. As laser intensities increase and electron energies grow, the interaction enters the radiation reaction regime, where the energy radiated by the electron becomes a significant fraction of its kinetic energy. Predicting the scattered electron energy spectrum — the …

Effects Of Beverage Color During Mouth Rinsing On Measures Of Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength, And Exercise Perceptions During Isometric Handgrip Testing, Sydney Andrews

Exercise Science Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has shown that color can influence psychological responses, physiological responses, and exercise performance. These effects have been previously attributed to learned associations or expectations which may influence exercise-related outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether beverage color influences muscular performance during intermittent isometric handgrip exercise. This randomized, single-blind, deceptive crossover study consisted of 34 physically active adults (21.9±3.1 years) who completed a handgrip endurance test under three conditions: red beverage rinse, clear beverage rinse, and no-rinse. Participants were informed that the study would examine the effects of mouth rinsing two commercially available carbohydrate containing sport drinks on muscular …

Examining The Relationships Between Apathy Subdomains, Heart Rate Variability And Cognitive Performance, Yasmin Bahai Nabulsi Aug 2026

Examining The Relationships Between Apathy Subdomains, Heart Rate Variability And Cognitive Performance, Yasmin Bahai Nabulsi

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Apathy, defined as a reduction in motivation and goal-directed behavior, is a multidimensional neuropsychiatric syndrome encompassing behavioral, executive, and emotional components. Although heart rate variability (HRV) has been linked to depression and executive functioning, its relationship with apathy remains unexplored. The present study examined associations between apathy subtypes, resting HRV, HR and HRV reactivity, and cognitive performance. A sample of 116 healthy young adults completed self-reported measures of apathy, depression, fatigue, reward sensitivity, and attentional control. Electrocardiography (ECG) was used to assess resting HRV, followed by continuous recording during cognitive tasks, which included the Digit Span Test and a verbal …

Public Participation In Community Redevelopment Agencies: A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding The Impacts Of Collaboration In Public-Private Partnerships, Shannon Mcbride-Lewis

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

Local governments create community redevelopment agencies (CRAs) to enhance economic and redevelopment opportunities within their communities through public-private partnerships funded with tax increment financing (TIF). The use of increment revenue, the complexity of public-private partnerships, and the controversies surrounding CRAs can lead to community concerns and opposition. Collaboratively engaging the public in the development, implementation, and performance of CRA public-private partnerships is one way to improve program and project outcomes by enhancing engagement, equity, and accountability. This study asks does the level of resources (dedicated professional staff, consequential incentives, and TIF contribution) and formal public-private partnership programs of CRAs influence …

Strategies Black Male Students With Social Anxiety Use To Persist And Succeed At Rural Community Colleges, Gwendolyn F. Houston

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Social anxiety, one of the more common types of anxiety, has been linked to poor concentration, impaired performance, and lower academic achievement (BlackDeer et al., 2021; Derakshan & Eysenck, 2009; Leigh et al., 2021). This study addresses the questions: “How do Black male students with social anxiety at rural community colleges in the Southeastern United States handle both academic and non-academic challenges and cope with these stressors?” and “How do Black male students with social anxiety navigate barriers during their journey at rural community colleges in the Southeastern United States, and what strategies do they use to manage these obstacles?” …

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Arterial Pulse Signals Of Cardiovascular Disease Patients Measured By A Microfluidic-Based Tactile Sensor, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Aug 2026

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Arterial Pulse Signals Of Cardiovascular Disease Patients Measured By A Microfluidic-Based Tactile Sensor, Md Mahfuzur Rahman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) based time–frequency analysis framework that can simultaneously extract a comprehensive set of cardiovascular autonomic indices from arterial pulse wave recordings obtained at rest and post-exercise, supporting non-invasive monitoring of autonomic recovery during cardiac rehabilitation. The framework rests on three technical contributions.

First, an SDOF analytical model of motion artefacts quantifies two physically distinct distortion mechanisms: additive baseline drift and Time-Varying System Parameter (TVSP) generated distortion of the Tissue-Contact-Sensor (TCS) stack. Baseline drift is slowly varying and removable by filtering; TVSP distortion rides on all harmonics of the true pulse signal and cannot be removed …

Autistic Students' Experiences With Hybrid Flexible Instruction In Higher Education: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Tracey Nicole Barr Aug 2026

Autistic Students' Experiences With Hybrid Flexible Instruction In Higher Education: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Tracey Nicole Barr

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

During the twenty-first century, autistic learners have enrolled in colleges and universities in greater numbers; however, the majority of research focused on their experiences in higher education has found them to be less academically successful than their neurotypical peers. The academic skills that autistic students bring to higher education are often tempered by social, emotional, and self-regulative challenges. The body of research focusing on autistic learners’ experiences in higher education is currently limited and focused primarily on fully in-person and online course models. No extant research has focused on autistic students’ experiences with hybrid or blended course models.

This interpretive …

Inbox Impressions: Exploring Trans-Situational Networked Ecology’S Influence On Student-Instructor Emails In Academic Communities Of Practice, Suzanne M. Gut

English Theses & Dissertations

Ineffective email communication has been a topic of debate, it seems, for as long as email has been a mainstream communication tool. This study, situated in linguistics, is one more part of that conversation and aims to address how instructors and students are using email in academic settings, what genre conventions they employ, and what expectations of and attitudes towards email and email users influence email communication. Discourse analysis and thematic analysis were used to identify emergent patterns in the data from 20 authentic emails and six student/faculty focus groups. This study draws from Pokharel’s theory of trans-situational networked ecology …

Praise That Empowers: Training Preschool Teachers To Linguistically Adapt Behavior-Specific Praise For Hispanic Students, Claudia Abril Ochoa

Dissertations

Children’s engagement in early ages is critical for promoting behavioral, academic, and social-emotional outcomes. However, engagement in classroom activities may be difficult for young children who have not mastered the primary language used in early childhood education settings (i.e., English). Research regarding engagement in English Language Learners (ELLs) in preschool settings, as well as cultural and/or linguistic adaptations of classroom interventions to serve this population is limited. Behavior-specific praise (BSP) has been an effective strategy to improve behavior in preschool classrooms. The current study used a multiple-baseline design across three Head-Start teachers to test the efficacy of in situ training …

A Trombone Studio Teacher's Guide To Non-Injury-Related Embouchure Changes, Austin A. Handley Aug 2026

A Trombone Studio Teacher's Guide To Non-Injury-Related Embouchure Changes, Austin A. Handley

Dissertations

This dissertation is a pedagogical guide for trombone studio teachers who will lead students through embouchure changes. These changes and adjustments are normal in brass pedagogy, but there is limited literature that addresses how teachers should identify the need for change, initiate the process, and support students through it. There are a growing number of resources available about embouchure injury and dysfunction, rehabilitation, and long-term prevention. This leaves a gap for teachers who are trying to help students using an inefficient embouchure setup.

The purpose of this study is to provide a practical resource for teachers by examining the experiences …

Musical Training Increases Anticipatory Responding And Predictive Control In Sequence Learning, Li Ann Leow, Jarrad Lum, Sara Johnson, Emily Corti, Welber Marinovic Aug 2026

Musical Training Increases Anticipatory Responding And Predictive Control In Sequence Learning, Li Ann Leow, Jarrad Lum, Sara Johnson, Emily Corti, Welber Marinovic

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Musicians demonstrate advantages in acquiring motor sequences, showing faster learning and better explicit sequence knowledge than non-musicians. However, it is unclear whether this advantage extends beyond acquisition to the consolidation phase, which is when newly learned skills stabilize and become resistant to interference. Additionally, while interference from executing competing motor tasks is well-established, less is known about whether purely sensory information presented after learning can disrupt consolidation of a bimodal motor sequence. We investigated how post-acquisition sensory interference affects performance of a learned audio-visual sequence, and whether musical training moderates this vulnerability. Participants first learned an explicit sequence in a …

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla Aug 2026

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-strength concrete (HSC) with low water-to-cement ratios undergoes self-desiccation, resulting in incomplete hydration, capillary porosity, and autogenous shrinkage that can compromise long-term performance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functions as an internal curing agent by releasing stored water as internal relative humidity decreases, thereby sustaining hydration within the cement matrix. However, the combined influence of PEG grade, dosage, and fibre type on the constitutive response, fracture behaviour, and environmental performance of M65 HSC remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated twelve concrete mixes incorporating three curing regimes viz. Conventional curing, spray curing, and PEG-based internal curing (IC) using PEG 4000 (1.5%) and PEG …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Preventive strategies, including adherence to specific dietary patterns, have received increasing attention as approaches to reduce cognitive decline and dementia risk. However, findings remain inconsistent, partly due to differences in dietary assessment methods, cognitive outcomes, and THE consideration of genetic susceptibility factors such as apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype.

Methods: This study examined associations between dietary patterns and longitudinal cognitive change in 185 older adults without dementia from the Western Australia Memory Study. Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessments at baseline and up to five follow-up visits at 18-month intervals. Composite scores were …

Reinforcement Learning For Cathode Material Design Through Sequential Decision-Making Frameworks, Taimoor Muzaffar Gondal, Muhammad Qasim, Yasir Arafat Aug 2026

Reinforcement Learning For Cathode Material Design Through Sequential Decision-Making Frameworks, Taimoor Muzaffar Gondal, Muhammad Qasim, Yasir Arafat

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The cathode material design is a persistent challenge in the development of next-generation rechargeable batteries. The cathode performance is critically influenced by certain key parameters, i.e., composition, crystal structures, ion transport, and degradation behaviour. Moreover, techno-economic and sustainable considerations also play a pivotal role in the viable cathode material design. In recent years, the integration of static machine learning models with conventional experimental techniques has significantly enhanced the cathode material design. However, the sequential nature of cathode discovery has not been fully captured by these techniques as they do not update their decision strategy based on prior outcomes. In this …

Unilateral Numbers Need Context: Reference Values For Single-Leg Cmj Performance Relative To Bilateral Cmj Capacity, Karol Kruczek, Tim Gabbett, Jason Lake, Michał Nowak Aug 2026

Unilateral Numbers Need Context: Reference Values For Single-Leg Cmj Performance Relative To Bilateral Cmj Capacity, Karol Kruczek, Tim Gabbett, Jason Lake, Michał Nowak

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The single-leg countermovement jump (SL CMJ) is widely used to assess limb-specific neuromuscular function, with interpretation commonly centred on inter-limb asymmetry. However, contextualising unilateral performance relative to bilateral capacity remains less clearly defined. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to develop exploratory descriptive benchmarks for SL CMJ kinetic, kinematic, and temporal variables expressed as a percentage of bilateral CMJ performance in a heterogeneous athletic cohort. A total of 348 athletes completed bilateral and unilateral CMJs using dual force plate sampling at 1000 Hz. The best trials were selected using the modified reactive strength index (mRSI), and averaged unilateral variables were expressed …

Validation Of A Portable Electrochemical Sensor For Real-Time Soil Nitrate Monitoring In Cotton Rhizosphere, Mohammad Solaiman, Elvis D. Sangmen, Ali Reza Galib, Tushar C. Sarker, Anil C. Somenahally, Shawana Tabassum

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil nitrate (NO3) exhibits rapid spatial and temporal variability that conventional point-sampling methods cannot effectively capture, limiting timely nutrient management and plant stress detection. This study aimed to validate a low-cost, threedimensional- printed electrochemical NO3 sensor for continuous in-soil monitoring and to evaluate whether sensor-derived NO3 dynamics reflect plant physiological responses. For this purpose, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants were grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. The sensor was evaluated in two sequential phases: an initial calibration phase to characterize sensor response across a broad NO3 concentration range, followed by a validation phase in the cotton plant rhizosphere. In the …

Estimation Of Persistent Inward Currents Contribution To Inspiratory Motoneuron Firing In Humans, Ricardo N.O. Mesquita, Simon C. Gandevia, Janet L. Taylor, Anna L. Hudson, Jane E. Butler Aug 2026

Estimation Of Persistent Inward Currents Contribution To Inspiratory Motoneuron Firing In Humans, Ricardo N.O. Mesquita, Simon C. Gandevia, Janet L. Taylor, Anna L. Hudson, Jane E. Butler

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Persistent inward currents (PICs) are known to prolong firing of limb-muscle motoneurons. Although there is immunohistochemical evidence of PIC channels in respiratory motoneurons, it is unknown whether PICs contribute to their firing prolongation. Intramuscular electromyographic signals were recorded from human inspiratory muscles to identify motor unit (MU) activity. Diaphragm MUs were identified during quiet breathing (n = 7; one female) and MUs from the 1st, 3rd, and 5th parasternal intercostal muscles during quiet (no lung volume feedback) and voluntary (triangular-shaped lung volume feedback) breathing (n = 5 males). PIC contribution to firing prolongation was estimated via quantification of firing hysteresis …

Genwriter 2.0: A Hybrid Case-Based And Llm Rewriting Approach For Mitigating Implicit Gender Cues In Text, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany Aug 2026

Genwriter 2.0: A Hybrid Case-Based And Llm Rewriting Approach For Mitigating Implicit Gender Cues In Text, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Gendered language is the use of words or phrases that indicate an individual's gender. Although useful in some contexts, gendered language can reinforce gender stereotypes and introduce bias, particularly in machine learning models for tasks involving people such as recruitment or occupation classification. When textual content about individuals, such as biographies, contain gender cues, models can learn spurious associations between gender and other characteristics of individuals, such as profession, potentially resulting in unfair outcomes such as reduced hiring opportunities for women.

To address this challenge, we propose GenWriter 2.0, a hybrid approach that integrates Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with Large …

Efficient Test-Time Retrieval Augmented Generation, Hailong Yin, Bin Zhu, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo Aug 2026

Efficient Test-Time Retrieval Augmented Generation, Hailong Yin, Bin Zhu, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate significant capabilities, their reliance on parametric knowledge often leads to inaccuracies. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) mitigates this by incorporating external knowledge, but these methods may introduce irrelevant retrieved documents, leading to inaccurate responses. While the integration methods filter out incorrect answers from multiple responses, but lack external knowledge like RAG methods, and their high costs require balancing overhead with performance gains. To address these issues, we propose an Efficient Test-Time Retrieval-Augmented Generation Framework named ET2RAG to improve the performance of LLMs while maintaining efficiency. Specifically, ET2RAG is a training-free method, that first retrieves the …

Paleolimnology And Diatom Taxonomy From Lake Tanganyika, Sristika Adhikari Aug 2026

Paleolimnology And Diatom Taxonomy From Lake Tanganyika, Sristika Adhikari

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Tanganyika is one of the world's largest freshwater ecosystems, supporting rich aquatic biodiversity and providing several ecosystem services to surrounding communities. Environmental changes such as rising lake surface temperatures, pollution, and land-use alterations threaten the lake’s sustainability. This research examines spatial and temporal variations in nutrient dynamics and primary productivity of Lake Tanganyika using diatom assemblages from multiple locations. Our findings indicate reduced nutrient levels and longer stratification periods in the lake’s central basin during most of the Common Era, as indicated by a remarkable increase in the relative abundance of long, needle-shaped planktonic Nitzschia species. In the southern …

Closer Than They Appear: Parasocial Relationships, Social Processes, And Emotional Intimacy, Paige Bedore Aug 2026

Closer Than They Appear: Parasocial Relationships, Social Processes, And Emotional Intimacy, Paige Bedore

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Decades of research have attempted to clarify the mechanisms underlying parasocial relationships, or one-sided relationships. Yet, relatively little empirical attention has been given to the subjective experiences of intimacy that occur in these relationships or to making direct comparisons between social and parasocial relational processes within individuals. The present study aimed to address these gaps and to investigate whether selected variables associated with social relationships similarly predicted parasocial relationship strength. Adult participants identified both a meaningful social relationship target and a parasocial target before completing measures of relationship strength, intimacy, attachment style, and cumulative exposure for each relationship type. Hypotheses …

The Joint Effect Of Bilingualism And Sleep On Executive Functions Among Children And Adolescents With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Yirou Jiang Aug 2026

The Joint Effect Of Bilingualism And Sleep On Executive Functions Among Children And Adolescents With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Yirou Jiang

Doctoral Dissertations

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly impacts cognitive and behavioral functions, leading challenges for individuals across the lifespan. While extensive research has been conducted to understand the connection between executive functioning (EF) and ADHD, research findings related to the contributing factors of bilingualism and sleep still remains inconsistent (Bialystok et al., 2017). Investigating the joint effect between bilingualism and sleep on EF among children and adolescents with ADHD may help further clarify the connection between EF, language, and sleep, and facilitate the development of interventions from the perspective of these protective factors. EF encompasses cognitive processes …

Racialised Gradients Of Human Value And Marx’S Working Day, Today, Anthony F. Peressini Aug 2026

Racialised Gradients Of Human Value And Marx’S Working Day, Today, Anthony F. Peressini

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper reconsiders the ‘working day’ discussion in chapter ten of Capital and how it centres two parameters in the generation and appropriation of surplus value. The first parameter is the cost of labour-power paid by the capitalist and the second is the time that the worker must yield to the capitalist: the ‘length of the working day’. The first parameter represents the amount of pay required to keep the worker alive and able to work. Marx understood it as a lower limit below which capitalism would cease to function. This paper argues that, while analytically coherent, this understanding of …
