The Role Individual Differences And Environmental Factors In Automated Driving Performance, John M. Duany
The Role Individual Differences And Environmental Factors In Automated Driving Performance, John M. Duany
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of ADHD diagnosis, inclement weather, non-driving-related tasks (NDRT), automation failures, and traffic density on driving performance and takeover performance. This study also examined the relationship between dispositional factors (i.e., trust in automation, cognitive failures, and self-efficacy) and dynamic factors (i.e., mental workload, situation awareness, and situational trust) in relation to automated driving performance. A total of 156 participants were recruited for this study, including drivers with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Each participant completed four experimental drives and two baseline drives. Mental workload, heart rate variability (HRV), situational trust, …
Pride Or Prejudice: An Examination Of Queer Content In Florida High Schools, Niamh L. Harrop
Pride Or Prejudice: An Examination Of Queer Content In Florida High Schools, Niamh L. Harrop
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis explores how queer individuals reflect on the presence—or more often, the absence—of queer content in their high school education. Despite increasing visibility of LGBTQ+ people in popular culture and legal reform, formal educational spaces remain largely heteronormative and cisnormative structured from a heterosexual and cisgender standpoint. Through a critical qualitative approach, this study draws on semi-structured interviews with 13 queer participants who attended high school in Florida in the years between the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015 and the passage of Florida’s H.B. 1557 (“Don’t Say Gay” law) in 2022. Using thematic analysis, four key themes were …
Examining Educational Inequalities And Driving Science’S Next Generation Forward: Geobus Program Theory Evaluation, Elise M. Lorenzo
Examining Educational Inequalities And Driving Science’S Next Generation Forward: Geobus Program Theory Evaluation, Elise M. Lorenzo
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study presents a theory-driven evaluation of GeoBus, a mobile science lab designed to deliver hands-on, “fun learning experiences” via a solar powered, technology-rich learning environment brought directly to K-12 students in Central Florida Title 1 schools. While STEM education is widely recognized as essential for promoting equity, many schools, particularly in under-resourced communities, continue to face barriers to accessing meaningful and inclusive science learning opportunities. GeoBus was created in response to this need, offering students an informal learning environment with exposure to geospatial technologies and interactive science content.
Drawing on mixed-methods data, including content from the GeoBus website and …

Summary This was a staff education project aimed at improving nurse knowledge on the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) tool. The identified gap in practice was a lack of knowledge and confidence among psychiatric nursing staff in utilizing this evidence-based suicide risk assessment tool. This project question was as follows: Does the implementation of an education program for psychiatric nursing staff on the use of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale improve knowledge of patients at risk for suicide? The project employed the ADDIE framework and the Johns Hopkins evidence-based practice model. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, yielding 67 relevant …
The Speech-To-Song Illusion Across Development And The Effects Of High-Level Expectations, Rodica R. Constantine
The Speech-To-Song Illusion Across Development And The Effects Of High-Level Expectations, Rodica R. Constantine
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The typical listener can readily categorize auditory stimuli as either speech or song even though these structures share many acoustic similarities. These musical and linguistic categories may nevertheless take time to develop as children acquire language- and music-specific knowledge. In the Speech-to-Song (STS) illusion, multiple repetitions of a natural spoken utterance can give rise to a perceptual switch wherein the stimulus begins to sound song-like to the listener. While the STS illusion has been well-researched in adult listeners, it had yet to be investigated in children. In our study, we examined whether children experience the STS illusion by presenting participants …
Development Of An Access Charge Framework For High-Speed Rail Incorporating Rail Replacement Costs And Dynamic Train Characteristics, Nitesh Kumar Yadav
Development Of An Access Charge Framework For High-Speed Rail Incorporating Rail Replacement Costs And Dynamic Train Characteristics, Nitesh Kumar Yadav
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis develops a framework to determine track access charges for shared high-speed rail corridors, with a focus on rail replacement cost driven by train-induced loads. The method explicitly accounts for both static loads, resulting from axle weights, and dynamic loads that arise from train speed and track geometry, particularly curvature. Train characteristics such as axle load, operating speed, frequency of service, and number of wheels are integrated with track parameters, including curve radius, to calculate the total vertical load. These loads are used to estimate the cumulative tonnage threshold for rail replacement and the resulting service life of the …

Substance use disorder (SUD) significantly increases the risk of neurotoxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired neuroplasticity. The activation of inflammatory pathways by substances may lead to reactive astrogliosis and chronic neuroinflammation, potentially mediated by the release of extracellular particles (EPs), such as extracellular condensates (ECs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). These particles, which reflect the physiological, pathophysiological, and metabolic states of their cells of origin, might carry molecular signatures indicative of SUD. In particular, our study investigated neuroinflammatory signatures in SUD patients by isolating EVs from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) Brodmann's area 9 (BA9) from postmortem subjects. We isolated BA9-derived …

The gut microbiome has emerged as a key regulator of response to cancer immunotherapy. However, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which the microbiome influences immunotherapy is needed to identify strategies to optimize outcomes. To this end, we developed a mathematical model to obtain insights into the effect of the microbiome on the immune system and immunotherapy response. This model was based on (i) gut microbiome data derived from preclinical studies, (ii) mathematical modeling of the antitumor immune response, (iii) association analysis of microbiome profiles with model-predicted immune profiles, and (iv) statistical models that correlate model parameters with …

Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen that has become a critical global health concern due to its high antifungal resistance and potential to cause nosocomial outbreaks. Since its initial identification in Japan in 2009, C. auris has spread rapidly, posing significant treatment challenges across various healthcare settings worldwide. The biofilm formation ability of C. auris enhances its resilience against disinfectants and antifungal agents, complicating infection control in healthcare environments. This consensus report, developed with the collaboration of several Turkish medical specialty societies, including the Turkish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialty (EKMUD), the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology …
The Benefits Of Establishing Attending Behavior Prior To The Discriminative Stimulus During Discrete-Trial Instruction: A Systematic Review, Ruben S. Pereira
The Benefits Of Establishing Attending Behavior Prior To The Discriminative Stimulus During Discrete-Trial Instruction: A Systematic Review, Ruben S. Pereira
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Discrete trial instruction (DTI) is one of the most effective and commonly used instructional strategies for teaching individuals with autism. Researchers and professionals have informally promoted the importance of establishing attending behavior prior to initiating discrete trials. However, some researchers have reported a lack of literature analyzing the effects of establishing attending behavior, prior to instruction, on skill acquisition. Therefore, the benefits of establishing attending as part of DTI remain unknown. The goal of the current thesis was to conduct a systematic review using PRISMA guidelines to search for published studies where attending behavior was a primary independent variable within …
Colostrum Extracellular Vesicle Are Neuroprotective In The Mptp Intoxicated Mouse Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Samia Akter
Colostrum Extracellular Vesicle Are Neuroprotective In The Mptp Intoxicated Mouse Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Samia Akter
Theses & Dissertations
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and the formation of Lewy bodies are the disease pathological hallmarks. We demonstrate that bovine colostrum extracellular vesicles (EVs) induce anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities during MPTP (methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) intoxication. Treatment these mice with colostrum EVs reduced the extent of activated microglia and neurodegenerative activities. RNA sequencing and transcriptomic analysis revealed a significant decrease in pro- inflammatory responses, as well as reduced recruitment and activation of immunocytes in affected brain tissues. Decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as well as suppressed canonical inflammasomes, was …

Red Noise Suppression In Pulsar Timing Array Data Using Adaptive Splines, Yi-Qian Qian, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Red Noise Suppression In Pulsar Timing Array Data Using Adaptive Splines, Yi-Qian Qian, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Noise in Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) data is commonly modeled as a mixture of white and red noise components. While the former is related to the receivers, and easily characterized by three parameters (EFAC, EQUAD and ECORR), the latter arises from a mix of hard to model sources and, potentially, a stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB). Since their frequency ranges overlap, GWB search methods must model the non-GWB red noise component in PTA data explicitly, typically as a set of mutually independent Gaussian stationary processes having power-law power spectral densities. However, in searches for continuous wave (CW) signals from resolvable …

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive cardiopulmonary condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The extracellular matrix component hyaluronan (HA) is linked to vascular remodelling and interstitial fibrosis in PH. We hypothesised that inhibition of HA synthesis with hymecromone could serve as a reverse-remodelling therapy in PH.
Methods: We performed a proof-of-concept phase IIa randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension and PH associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD). Patients were randomised to a 5:3 ratio and stratified by PH group to receive oral hymecromone or placebo two times per day over 24 weeks. The primary …

Phosphorylation of the JNK (pJNK) protein promotes an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), enhancing aggressiveness in inflammatory triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This study evaluated the role of JNK signaling using a gene signature. RNA sequencing was performed on 347 TNBC tumors from the phase 3 International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG) 22-00 trial, which evaluated adjuvant low-dose cyclophosphamide and methotrexate (CM). Immune-related tumors were identified by TNBC subtype or tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Associations between JNK and outcomes were analyzed using Cox models. Low pJNK levels were associated with better disease-free survival (DFS) in immune-related tumors. These tumors also had lower Treg …

The Southwestern US and northern Mexico continue to serve as ideal regions to elucidate the suite of ecological and evolutionary processes influencing lineage diversification. The complex geological history of arid North America, coupled with paleoclimate change during the Pleistocene and diverse ecoregions makes a multipronged approach to hypothesis testing necessary. We combine thousands of loci from a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach along with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from the Greater Earless Lizard (Cophosaurus texanus) to examine diversity and test for cryptic population structure. We also apply recently developed coalescent approaches in a Bayesian framework to estimate migration rates. Population …
Segmentation And Memory In Interactive, Inferential Events, Ata Baris Karagoz
Segmentation And Memory In Interactive, Inferential Events, Ata Baris Karagoz
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Though everyday life is continuous, people tend to understand and remember experiences as discrete events separated by boundaries. Event segmentation theory (EST) (Zacks et al., 2007) describes these event boundaries as being driven by prediction error. People have an internal model of how an event unfolds, uses this to form predictions, and then places a boundary when a new model is necessary. Prior studies suggest that episodic memory is enhanced for information occurring near event boundaries, though less is known about these effects in interactive environments. To assess this, I designed an experimental paradigm where participants uncover changes in the …
Structure And Function Of Type 1 Pilus Assembly Machinery In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Ryan Bitter
Structure And Function Of Type 1 Pilus Assembly Machinery In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Ryan Bitter
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Gram-negative bacteria produce chaperone-usher pathway (CUP) pili, which are extracellular adhesive protein fibers critical for host-pathogen interactions. An outer-membrane usher protein, together with a periplasmic chaperone, assembles thousands of pilin subunits into a pilus fiber. Each pilus is tipped by an adhesin that mediates host and tissue tropisms by binding to receptors with stereochemical specificity. Type 1 pili expressed by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are essential virulence factors in urinary tract infections (UTIs) and facilitate attachment to mannosylated glycoproteins on bladder epithelial cells. Although type 1 pili have been extensively studied, critical gaps remain in our understanding of the molecular …
Unveiling Mysteries Of The Universe: Axions, Sterile Neutrinos, And Curvatons, Takuya Okawa
Unveiling Mysteries Of The Universe: Axions, Sterile Neutrinos, And Curvatons, Takuya Okawa
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The Standard Model of particle physics and cosmology is amazingly successful in describing our universe, from at present to even tracing back to just one second after its birth. Yet, it is known to be incomplete. For instance, (i) more than four-fifths of matter in the universe is unknown, (ii) quantum chromodynamics is unnaturally of CP-preserving nature, (iii) the universe produced baryonic particles by nearly equal but slightly larger amount compared to anti-baryonic particles, and (iv) the physics at very early times is not understood yet. This thesis first briefly summarizes the Standard Model of particle physics and cosmology, and …

From Sim To 6dof: Deep Learning For Real-Time Satellite Pose Estimation From Resolved Ground-Based Imagery, Thomas W.N. Dickinson
From Sim To 6dof: Deep Learning For Real-Time Satellite Pose Estimation From Resolved Ground-Based Imagery, Thomas W.N. Dickinson
Theses
This dissertation presents the first practical system for automated six degrees of freedom (6DOF) satellite pose estimation from resolved ground-based adaptive optics (AO) imagery. Addressing a key challenge in Space Domain Awareness (SDA), the proposed approach eliminates the need for human labeling by directly regressing satellite orientation and position from blurry, noisy, and deeply-shadowed imagery. The architecture consists of a multi-stage deep neural network pipeline that localizes the satellite, predicts pose, and optionally smooths predictions over time. Networks are trained exclusively on fully synthetic imagery generated from a 3D CAD model. Despite this, the model generalizes effectively, bridging the Sim2Real …
Spectroscopy Pre-Trained Transformer (Specpt): A Universal Spectroscopic Analysis And Redshift Measurement Framework, Rohan Pattnaik
Spectroscopy Pre-Trained Transformer (Specpt): A Universal Spectroscopic Analysis And Redshift Measurement Framework, Rohan Pattnaik
Theses
Spectroscopic surveys are essential for measuring galaxy redshifts and probing the physical processes driving galaxy evolution. As datasets grow in scale and complexity, traditional analysis methods face increasing limitations, motivating the development of scalable, data-driven alternatives. This thesis presents SpecPT, a transformer-based deep learning framework for general-purpose spectroscopic analysis, with a focus on redshift estimation. The model is first trained on DESI Early Data Release spectra from the Bright Galaxy and Emission Line Galaxy samples, jointly performing spectral reconstruction and redshift regression while learning a latent representation that captures the intrinsic properties of galaxies. SpecPT is then extended to a …

Marine-terminating glaciers of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) have been losing mass since the 1990s, with a substantial portion caused by the effects of dynamic change. Conventional assessments of dynamic mass loss, however, often ignore the influence of terminus advance or retreat on the timing of mass loss. Here, we construct and analyze a decade (2013-2023) of monthly ice flux driven both by temporal variability in ice flow (i.e., discharge) and terminus position change - collectively called terminus ablation - for 49 marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland. We calculate terminus ablation rates using open-source datasets, including terminus position, ice surface elevation, ice thickness, …
