A Hybrid Vsm-Des Approach For Bottleneck Identification And Reduction In A Continous One-Piece Flow Assembly System, Ana Sofia Rey Nevarez Aug 2026

A Hybrid Vsm-Des Approach For Bottleneck Identification And Reduction In A Continous One-Piece Flow Assembly System, Ana Sofia Rey Nevarez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Identifying bottlenecks in a production line is rarely as easy as pointing to the slowest station and assuming that's where the problem is. The real question is which stations moves the system when you change them. Lean manufacturing has been one of the initiatives that major companies in the U.S. have been trying to adopt to remain competitive. This thesis aims to understand the results of applying a combination of a Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) with a Value Stream Mapping (VSM), to find the bottleneck of a continuous one-piece flow assembly line of a tier-1 power management manufacturer from the El …

From Screening To Risk: Assessment Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Children's Toys Along The El Paso, Tx, U.S.A.-Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex Border Region, Jesus Rodriguez-Loya Aug 2026

From Screening To Risk: Assessment Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Children's Toys Along The El Paso, Tx, U.S.A.-Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex Border Region, Jesus Rodriguez-Loya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Children are uniquely vulnerable to potentially toxic elements (PTEs), absorbing them more readily than adults and encountering them through the hand-to-mouth behaviors of early childhood. Exposure carries element-specific consequences: lead (Pb) impairs cognitive development with no established safe threshold; cadmium (Cd) damages the kidneys and reduces bone mineralization; arsenic (As) is a recognized carcinogen and developmental neurotoxicant; hexavalent chromium (Cr) is carcinogenic and induces allergic dermatitis; nickel (Ni) is the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis in children; and excess zinc (Zn) disrupts copper absorption and causes gastrointestinal distress. Toys are a distinctive source of such exposure, yet none had …

A Study On The Complex Doping Of Na2x2teo6 (X = Ni, Cu, Fe, Co, Zn), Omar Salas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Na2Ni2TeO6 is a layered honeycomb antiferromagnet in which Ni2+ ions form magnetic honeycomb planesseparated by sodium layers. In this work, four compositionally complex oxides derived from Na2Ni2TeO6 were synthesized to test whether the NNTO-type structure remains stable when 50% of the Ni sublattice is replaced by mixtures of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Co. Powder X-ray diffraction and neutron powder diffraction show that all four samples retain the hexagonal P 63/mcm average structure of the parent NNTO phase, demonstrating that the layered honeycomb framework is stable against substantial multiple-cation substitution. A small CoFe2O4 secondary phase is present in all four samples …

Towards A Multi-Framework Approach To Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Henry Salgado Aug 2026

Towards A Multi-Framework Approach To Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Henry Salgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models are increasingly being deployed to support decision-making in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, criminal justice, and education, where trust, accountability, and transparency are critical. However, increasing model complexity has made many modern systems insufficiently transparent. Existing approaches to explainable AI (XAI) typically emphasize either intrinsic model simplicity or post-hoc attribution methods that estimate feature importance for predictions. While these approaches provide valuable insights into model behavior, they do not necessarily establish whether the identified importance is grounded in the underlying data patterns or in the structural relationships that generate model behavior. Many …

Mija, Yes You Can: Faith And Motherhood In The Making Of A Scholar, Alejandra Salgado-Hernandez Aug 2026

Mija, Yes You Can: Faith And Motherhood In The Making Of A Scholar, Alejandra Salgado-Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This autoethnographic study examines how motherhood, faith, and borderlands identity shaped persistence throughout my journey as a Chicana mother-scholar in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Grounded in Borderlands Theory and Chicana Feminist Epistemology, the study centers lived experience, testimonio, spirituality, emotion, and embodied knowledge as legitimate forms of inquiry. Data included reflective journals, personal memory work, and selected family contributions. Through iterative narrative and thematic analysis, I organized experiences chronologically, coded recurring patterns and critical incidents, tested candidate themes across sources, and interpreted the resulting themes through the study's theoretical and scholarly literature. Four interconnected themes emerged: living in nepantla through borderlands …

Integrated Framework For Tsn-Enabled Ot Networks And Scalable Edge Computing To Enable Real-Time Feedback Loop, Taposh Kumer Sarker Aug 2026

Integrated Framework For Tsn-Enabled Ot Networks And Scalable Edge Computing To Enable Real-Time Feedback Loop, Taposh Kumer Sarker

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The advent of Industry 5.0 envisions smart manufacturing characterized by human centricity, sustainability, and systemic resilience. Realizing this vision requires the seamless convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) networks. However, integrating massive, stochastic IT edge computing workloads with deterministic physical control loops introduces severe architectural friction, inherently threatening the safety guarantees required by industrial machinery. To resolve this fundamental incompatibility, this dissertation proposes the Edge-Augmented Real-Time Industrial Control System (EA-RICS).

EA-RICS is a comprehensive, multi-layered architecture designed to dismantle systemic bottlenecks across the physical data plane, the centralized control plane, and the edge operating system. First, the …

An Analysis Of Mating Strategies In Rotifers Inhabiting Temporary Habitats, Ariel Bollinger Aug 2026

An Analysis Of Mating Strategies In Rotifers Inhabiting Temporary Habitats, Ariel Bollinger

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Reproduction is critical for organisms inhabiting ephemeral aquatic habitats where desiccation risk favors rapid and successful mating. Monogonont rotifers rely on sexual reproduction to produce diapausing eggs that withstand harsh conditions. I investigated how mating behaviors vary among populations of five rotifer species based on the hydroperiod of their habitat: Epiphanes brachionus and E. chihuahuaensis were sampled from habitats with short (SH) and long (LH) hydroperiods; Euchlanis dilatata was collected from a short (SH) and a permanent habitat; and Plationus patulus and Sinantherina socialis were collected from a long (LH) and a permanent (Perm) habitat. I hypothesized that SH populations …

Daily Consumer Expenditures And Income: New Evidence From A Payment Diary, Shaun Gilyard, Scott Schuh Aug 2026

Daily Consumer Expenditures And Income: New Evidence From A Payment Diary, Shaun Gilyard, Scott Schuh

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper demonstrates that unique daily consumption and income transactions data derived from the Diary of Consumer Payment Choice (DCPC) produced unplanned benefits: they cover high percentages of U.S. data, forecast well in real time, offer new insights to payday and pay-cycle effects, and suggest selection effects in convenience samples of transactions data. Relative to other transactions data, DCPC data are more representative, publicly available, and offers other advantages. Daily data more clearly exhibit three explicit features largely absent from lower frequencies: 1) discrepancy between consumption and expenditures; 2) discrete expenditures and income; and 3) asynchronous consumer expenditures (daily) and …

From Personal To Personalized Goals: How Goal Nudges Improve Production, Joaquín Gómez-Miñambres, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hernán González Aug 2026

From Personal To Personalized Goals: How Goal Nudges Improve Production, Joaquín Gómez-Miñambres, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hernán González

ESI Working Papers

We study how workers’ non-binding self-set goals affect their production and whether goal nudges (ability-calibrated goal hints) make goal setting more effective. In a real-effort task, participants first complete an ability pretest and are then assigned to one of three treatments: a no-goal baseline, a personal goal treatment with no external hint, or a personalized goal nudge that participants may accept or modify. We document a positive link between goals and production. However, merely asking workers to set goals is ineffective: when left unguided, workers anchor on conservative goals well below those induced by goal nudges, leading to underperformance. In …

Socially-Minded Investors And Corporate Behavior, Merritt B. Fox, Menesh S. Patel Aug 2026

Socially-Minded Investors And Corporate Behavior, Merritt B. Fox, Menesh S. Patel

Faculty Scholarship

Many equity investors are concerned with the world’s worsening social and environmental problems and are losing faith in the capacity of political institutions to respond. Corporate behavior is often contributing to these problems. Some investors, at least if fully informed as to costs and benefits involved, would favor corrective changes to corporate behavior even where that would lessen their investment returns. Two important questions arise: (1) given existing law, are such willing-to-sacrifice equity investors currently affecting firm behavior; and (2) should there be legal reform that makes firms more sensitive to these willing-to-sacrifice investors’ preferences? This Article seeks to answer …

An Exploration Of The Psychological Impacts Of Code-Switching, Cristina Culler Aug 2026

An Exploration Of The Psychological Impacts Of Code-Switching, Cristina Culler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the lived experiences of four Black American adults who have frequently engaged in code-switching. Historically, code-switching has been perceived as a necessary skill that helps marginalized folx adopt the norms and practices of the dominant culture. As a result, code-switching has become a routine practice specifically for Black Americans who often occupy white spaces. Since code-switching has been perceived as a skill, the oppressive origins of code-switching often go unnoticed. Therefore, this dissertation examines code-switching through a critical lens that deems this practice a product of racist ideologies that prioritize whiteness. Through …

Development And Evaluation Of Alternative Mandrel Materials For The Fabrication Of In-House Silicone Vascular Models, Cole Capitani Aug 2026

Development And Evaluation Of Alternative Mandrel Materials For The Fabrication Of In-House Silicone Vascular Models, Cole Capitani

Master's Theses

Dr. Kristen Cardinal’s Tissue Engineering Laboratory at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo develops tissue-engineered blood vessel mimics (BVMs) for preclinical testing of neurovascular devices. These BVMs are reliant on silicone vascular models that define the vessel geometry, support endothelial cell attachment, and allow devices to be evaluated in a controlled in vitro environment. Previous work in the lab established injection molding as a viable method for fabricating silicone vascular models and utilized acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) for sacrificial mandrels. However, this workflow relied on the use of acetone for mandrel dissolution, required single-use mandrels, had extended post-processing times, …

When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak Aug 2026

When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak

Discussion Papers

Economic development is often conceived as structural transformation and migration out of rural agriculture (Lewis, 1954; Fei & Ranis, 1964). Understanding development therefore requires us to identify how rural economies transform in response to emigration. We study how international migration reshapes domestic economic activity in origin households using a randomized visa lottery that gave Bangladeshi men job opportunities in Malaysia. Winning the lottery raises total household income through remittances, but income earned in Bangladesh declines due to contractions in nonfarm business activity. In contrast, crop income remains stable despite large reductions in agricultural input expenditures, because farming gets delegated through …

The Information Content Of The Implied Volatility Term Structure Slope For Forecasting Commodity Market Volatility, Lawrence E. Mckenzie Aug 2026

The Information Content Of The Implied Volatility Term Structure Slope For Forecasting Commodity Market Volatility, Lawrence E. Mckenzie

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This study evaluates the implied volatility term structure (IVTS) slope (𝜅) for forecasting 21-day realized volatility against traditional time-series benchmarks and a 3-month continuous futures baseline. Using a matched sample of eight energy and agricultural commodities spanning 2007 to 2019, the study explicitly tests whether the option-implied slope contains unique predictive information beyond deferred price histories. The empirical findings yield three primary insights. First, redundancy testing indicates that the slope parameter delivers a statistically significant, independent risk signal even when controlling for deferred continuous futures paths. Second, an integrated joint encompassing framework that combines near-term historical volatility, generalized autoregressive conditional …

Aim: This project aimed to improve staff self-reported confidence, competence, and workflow in Parkinson’s disease care and disease management by 15%, from a baseline of 60% to 75%. Methods: The project implemented a PD-specific educational program that consists of an hour-long PowerPoint presentation and distribution of physical brochures to staff, residents, and their families. Pre- and post-surveys were …

Using Assessments Intentionally With Consideration For English Language Learners, Elizabeth Ropp Aug 2026

Using Assessments Intentionally With Consideration For English Language Learners, Elizabeth Ropp

Masters Projects

Assessment systems in the United States are failing English Language Learners (ELLs), and it has become apparent that action must be taken to try and right this injustice. There is a wide achievement gap between native English speakers and non-native English speakers when it comes to performance on state, local, and classroom assessments. Unfortunately, many teachers report that they do not feel adequately prepared to support ELLs both on classroom assessments and on mandatory state or local tests. With an ever-growing increase in ELL enrollment in American schools, it is imperative that teachers are given tools to help them better …

The Effect Of Childcare On Female Labor Supply And Child Development In Low And Middle Income Countries, Serena Goldberg, Costas Meghir Aug 2026

The Effect Of Childcare On Female Labor Supply And Child Development In Low And Middle Income Countries, Serena Goldberg, Costas Meghir

Discussion Papers

Childcare services can offer an opportunity for women to develop their careers and increase household income. At the same time, it can affect the development of children, depending on the quality of care. We first develop a collective model of the household as a conceptual framework to show how improving the availability of childcare can affect mothers’ labor market opportunities and earnings and how it can affect child development. We then review the literature on the effects of childcare on the employment and earnings of women and on child development. Childcare can increase mothers’ employment. However, limited work opportunities or …

Teaching Difficult Histories: An Exploratory Case Study Of Teacher Experiences And Student Demonstrations Of Historical Empathy In A Cdf Freedom School, Michael T. Miller Aug 2026

Teaching Difficult Histories: An Exploratory Case Study Of Teacher Experiences And Student Demonstrations Of Historical Empathy In A Cdf Freedom School, Michael T. Miller

Dissertations

This qualitative case study explored two research questions: What did CDF Freedom School teachers experience while teaching elementary and middle school students how to learn history with a critical lens? How did CDF Freedom School students’ work demonstrate historical empathy and perspective-taking? Using secondary data collected by Dr. Johari Harris from the Summer 2023 CDF Freedom School in Charlottesville, VA, a thematic analysis was conducted of exit interviews from four teachers, classroom observation data from one teacher, and writing samples from students in grades 3-8 in response to materials from the Educating for Democracy curriculum. Themes were created from teacher …

Secondary Biology Teachers’ Understandings Of Growth Mindset, Kathryn Chapman Aug 2026

Secondary Biology Teachers’ Understandings Of Growth Mindset, Kathryn Chapman

Dissertations

This case study investigates how high school biology teachers understand and apply growth mindset principles in their daily instruction. Using surveys, semi‑structured interviews, and focus groups, the study examines how biology teachers interpret mindset, how they attempt to enact it, and how curriculum demands shape their efforts. Findings show that teachers’ beliefs about intelligence strongly influence their feedback, expectations, and instructional decisions. Teachers described biology as a subject in which struggle is highly visible, emotionally charged, and often tied to students’ prior knowledge, making mindset work both necessary and challenging. Results also indicate that students’ mindsets are shaped by broader …

Promotion Architecture: A Deal Fairness Model Of Restricted Price Promotions, Shangwen Yi, David Hardisty, Dale Griffin, Thomas Allard Aug 2026

Promotion Architecture: A Deal Fairness Model Of Restricted Price Promotions, Shangwen Yi, David Hardisty, Dale Griffin, Thomas Allard

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This research examines the effectiveness of two common types of restricted price promotions: threshold promotions (conditional on spending more than a threshold amount; e.g., “Get $5 off on orders of $10 or more”) and capped promotions (limited to a maximum dollar value; e.g., “Get 50% off, up to $5 per order”). Results from seven pre-registered studies, including one field study, show that threshold promotions lead to higher purchase intentions and conversion rates (but potentially lower purchase amounts) than comparable capped promotions—even though capped promotions are equivalent in maximal economic savings for the consumer—when the trigger value (the spending amount at …

Pseudo-Riesz Bases, Deborpita Biswas Aug 2026

Pseudo-Riesz Bases, Deborpita Biswas

All Dissertations

In this dissertation, we will introduce the concept of pseudo-Riesz bases, extending the influential notion of near-Riesz bases first proposed by J. Holub in the 1990s. Our goal is to develop an analogous theory for pseudo-Riesz bases, obtaining results parallel to those known for near-Riesz bases, with suitable modifications.

We will develop the foundational theory of pseudo-Riesz bases. Unlike classical Riesz bases, these sequences need not be complete or independent; however, they still retain meaningful expansion properties. We will investigate the conditions under which a Bessel sequence can be transformed into a Riesz basis through finite modifications. In particular, we …

Shaping Writers, Shaping Pedagogy: Elementary Teachers’ Writing Identities And Instructional Change Within Literacy Coaching Contexts, Elizabeth T. Besch Aug 2026

Shaping Writers, Shaping Pedagogy: Elementary Teachers’ Writing Identities And Instructional Change Within Literacy Coaching Contexts, Elizabeth T. Besch

All Dissertations

Despite the central role of writing in literacy development, many elementary teachers report limited preparation in writing instruction and uncertainty in how they understood themselves as writers. Increasingly, literacy coaching has been positioned as a form of job-embedded professional learning that supports instructional change; however, less is known about how coaching contexts shape teachers’ identities as writers and how those identities relate to instructional practice.

This qualitative multiple-case study examined how elementary teachers’ writer identities were constructed and enacted within a literacy coaching context. The study addressed the following research questions: (1) How do literacy coaching contexts, as figured worlds, …

Broadening Participation In Computing: Retention Pathways For Supporting Underrepresented Students, Oluwafemi Osho Aug 2026

Broadening Participation In Computing: Retention Pathways For Supporting Underrepresented Students, Oluwafemi Osho

All Dissertations

The computing sector's rapid growth has intensified demand for computing professionals, yet undergraduate computer science (CS) programs continue to lose substantial numbers of students, often within the first two years, before they reach degree completion. Attrition is not evenly distributed: women and other underrepresented minority (URM) students remain less likely to persist in CS despite broader increases in enrollment. These persistent disparities suggest the need to understand not only how to broaden entry into computing but also how students' experiences within programs shape retention over time. In this dissertation, I address this critical challenge by focusing on identifying inclusive strategies …

Impacts Of Prescribed Burning And Midstory Thinning On The Abundance Of Eastern Whip-Poor-Will And Chuck-Will’S-Widow In Southern Illinois, Lauren Benedict Aug 2026

Impacts Of Prescribed Burning And Midstory Thinning On The Abundance Of Eastern Whip-Poor-Will And Chuck-Will’S-Widow In Southern Illinois, Lauren Benedict

Theses

The Chuck-will’s-widow (Antrostomus carolinensis) and Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) are nightjar species that inhabit southern Illinois during the breeding season. Both species are thought to benefit from open woodlands which are often a result of natural disturbance or active forest management. However, due to a lack of significant disturbances and active management, this forest structure has become rare. Like many disturbance-dependent species, the Chuck-will’s-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will have experienced range-wide declines over the past 50 years. Despite this, few studies have examined the impacts of forest management and the resulting forest structure on these species. We evaluated the impacts of …
