Understanding And Predicting Precipitation Characteristics In The United States Through Machine Learning, Numerical Modeling And Measurements, Cody Luther Ratterman Aug 2026

Understanding And Predicting Precipitation Characteristics In The United States Through Machine Learning, Numerical Modeling And Measurements, Cody Luther Ratterman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Precipitation is one of the most important yet uncertain variables in the climate system. It varies dramatically in terms of timing, accumulation, rate, and phase, depending on location, season, circulation patterns, and atmospheric conditions. Precipitation forecasts, especially snowfall, are essential to supporting drought mitigation and water management in the Intermountain West. Because rainfall and snowfall lead to opposite effects on snowpack, accurately partitioning rain and snow is important to estimate snowpack levels, winter recreation, mountain ecosystems and runoff. The research findings in this dissertation have advanced the understanding and prediction of precipitation and snowpack in the U.S. by addressing the …

The Use Of A Novel Decision Making Tool To Support Educators' Use Of Classroom Management Practices, Emma C. Preston Aug 2026

The Use Of A Novel Decision Making Tool To Support Educators' Use Of Classroom Management Practices, Emma C. Preston

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

We examined the impacts of a novel classroom management evaluation tool that includes a decision-making feature to involve teachers in the selection of a strategy to improve their utilization of classroom management strategies titled the Behavioral Observation and Teacher Support System (BOTSS). We evaluated teacher praise-to-corrective statement ratios and teacher opportunities to respond, as well as student disruptive behavior and teacher social validity. We found that two independent observers scored teacher behavior similarly using the BOTSS, and that the BOTSS process produced moderate effects on teacher behavior. We did not observe an impact on student disruptive behavior. Teachers reported positively …

Developing A New Uas Method For Estimating Heat Exposure On Western Us Trails, Jared Young Aug 2026

Developing A New Uas Method For Estimating Heat Exposure On Western Us Trails, Jared Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Heat exposure and the risks to human health that stem from it have been studied extensively in the context of urban and occupational settings. Less studied however, is the effect of heat exposure in a recreational setting such as on hiking trails. What makes this fact more surprising is that recreation, especially in the Western US, is extremely popular, with national parks such as Zion and Arches bringing in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. With millions of recreationists exposed to the hazard of heat every year, it is critical that recreationists are made aware of the dangers they …

Mindful Classrooms: Teachers Co-Designing And Implementing Mindfulness Interventions, Mary L. Phan Aug 2026

Mindful Classrooms: Teachers Co-Designing And Implementing Mindfulness Interventions, Mary L. Phan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Teachers play a critical role in supporting student learning and well-being, yet many experience high levels of stress, burnout, and increasing job demands. Stress can negatively affect teachers’ mental health, job satisfaction, and classroom environments, making it important to identify practical and sustainable ways to support teacher well being. Mindfulness practices, which encourage individuals to focus on the present moment with awareness and acceptance, have shown promise for reducing stress and improving emotional well-being. However, little is known about how mindfulness programs can be adapted to fit the realities of elementary school classrooms and whether teachers can successfully implement these …

The Role Of Individual Specialization In Migration Phenology And How Restored Habits Are Used By Native And Nonnative Fishes, Austin Garner Aug 2026

The Role Of Individual Specialization In Migration Phenology And How Restored Habits Are Used By Native And Nonnative Fishes, Austin Garner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Native fish species around the world have declined due to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and the spread of non-native species. Because these problems often happen at the same time and interact, recovery efforts can stall unless they address all of the factors limiting a species' comeback. The June sucker (Chasmistes liorus), native only to Utah Lake, UT, has declined for many of these reasons, though its recovery effort has made significant progress due in large part to a successful hatchery program. Yet, the recovery efforts have not yet been able to establish a self-sustaining population in Utah Lake, …

The Influence Of Habitat And Individual Specialization On Mountain Lion (Puma Concolor) Hunting Strategy In A Multi-Prey System, Hannah B. Klugman Aug 2026

The Influence Of Habitat And Individual Specialization On Mountain Lion (Puma Concolor) Hunting Strategy In A Multi-Prey System, Hannah B. Klugman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

There is a growing recognition that animal species considered generalists (having a broad and varied diet), are actually specialists, a collection of individuals with different preferences and strategies known as specializations. The diet of a specialist depends on the variety and quantity of available food options, and their own ability to take what they need. Mountain lions (Puma concolor) are known for their ability and tendency to hunt large prey, such as elk (Cervus canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), but despite the fact they overlap with other potential large prey, like feral horses …

The Role Of Roughness And Geometry In 2d Depth-Averaged Models: A Comparative Study Using Laboratory Flume Experiments, Adrienne Luymes Mckell Aug 2026

The Role Of Roughness And Geometry In 2d Depth-Averaged Models: A Comparative Study Using Laboratory Flume Experiments, Adrienne Luymes Mckell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Hydraulic models are commonly used to predict how water moves through rivers and streams, helping engineers manage flood risk and design infrastructure such as bridges, culverts, and restoration projects. One challenge in these models is representing the effects of riverbed roughness, including features such as rocks, vegetation, and other obstacles that slow water flow.

This study investigated whether it is better to represent these roughness features in detail or to simplify them while still accounting for their effects. Laboratory measurements from a controlled channel experiment were used to create two computer models: one that included the detailed shape of the …

Comparison Of Forces Generated By An Impinging Water Jet Using Numerical And Physical Experimentation, Spencer R. Young Aug 2026

Comparison Of Forces Generated By An Impinging Water Jet Using Numerical And Physical Experimentation, Spencer R. Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

When water is released from hydraulic structures such as dams water jets are formed and land on the downstream surfaces. When these jets land there is high potential for erosion or scour. Scour has the potential to compromise the structure and cause the uncontrolled release of water that can endanger downstream communities and infrastructure.

Engineers use tools including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to inform their designs to mitigate the risk of scour. This study compares how well CFD is able to model the forces created by a water jet by comparing the results to laboratory collected physical data. To make …

Integrative Taxonomic Analysis Of Cryptic Species Diversity In The Spiny Witch-Hazel Gall Aphid, Hamamelistes Spinosus (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Hormaphidini) In Eastern North America, Gavin Andrew Powell Munson Aug 2026

Integrative Taxonomic Analysis Of Cryptic Species Diversity In The Spiny Witch-Hazel Gall Aphid, Hamamelistes Spinosus (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Hormaphidini) In Eastern North America, Gavin Andrew Powell Munson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Taxonomy is the practice of identifying, classifying and categorizing species, providing structure for the vast diversity of life. Aphids are an ecologically important group of soft-bodied insects, but they can be difficult to identify because of their tiny anatomical size, reduced or simplified morphological features, and morphological variation within a single species across different generations. In this study, the taxonomy of the spiny witch-hazel gall aphid, Hamamelistes spinosus, is revised. The complex multi-generational life cycle of the aphids, which alternates between witch-hazel and birch trees, has led to confusion regarding past descriptions. Scientists in the late 1800s who were …

Patterns Of Presidential Executive Orders And Democratic Quality: Evidence From The United States, 2017-2025, Karyn Sofie Sanford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Democratic backsliding has become an increasingly prominent topic in political science, yet relatively little attention has been devoted to how observable expressions of executive authority correspond with changes in democratic quality. Using the United States as a case study, this study examines the relationship between presidential executive orders and democratic quality from 2017 to 2025. More specifically, it investigates whether characteristics of executive orders correspond with changes in democratic quality, measured using the Liberal Democracy Index and the Judicial Constraints Index from the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Project.

Presidential executive order issued between 2017 and 2025 were collected from the …

Formulation And Analysis Of Physiochemical And Sensory Properties Of Ready-To-Mix Whey Protein Phospholipid Concentrate Beverage, Chris Jaquin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Whey protein phospholipid concentrate (WPPC) is commonly recovered as a coproduct in filtration process whose aim is to obtain whey protein isolate (WPI) from whey protein concentrate (WPC). Whey protein phospholipid concentrate is high in milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), which has been shown in rodent and human studies to have a variety of physiological benefits, including an increase in exercise capacity. Whey protein phospholipid concentrate is currently considered as an underused dairy coproduct, with most of it either being disposed of or used as animal feed. This research consisted of incorporating WPPC in a protein shake–like beverage at a …

A Cfd-Dem Framework For Characterizing Nanoparticle Adhesion Effects On Creeping-Flow Permeability In Composite Manufacturing, Gavin Stoker Aug 2026

A Cfd-Dem Framework For Characterizing Nanoparticle Adhesion Effects On Creeping-Flow Permeability In Composite Manufacturing, Gavin Stoker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Modern aircraft, spacecraft, and high-performance vehicles are increasingly built from composite materials, engineered combinations of plastics and fibers that are lighter and stronger than traditional metals. Researchers are now pushing these materials further by mixing in microscopic particles thousands of times smaller than a human hair, called nanoparticles, to make them even tougher and more resistant to damage. The challenge is getting those nanoparticles distributed evenly. During manufacturing, liquid plastic resin is pumped through a network of tightly packed fibers, carrying the nanoparticles along with it. But nanoparticles tend to clump together and stick to surfaces as they travel, clogging …

A Multi-Label Computer Vision-Based Approach For Condition Assessment Of Traffic Signs: Database Compilation, Model Training, And Evaluation, Shailaja Ratna Pandey Aug 2026

A Multi-Label Computer Vision-Based Approach For Condition Assessment Of Traffic Signs: Database Compilation, Model Training, And Evaluation, Shailaja Ratna Pandey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Traffic signs help drivers and pedestrians to understand roadway rules, warnings, and directions, which determine how road users should behave. When signs fade or delaminate, they become harder to read and interpret, which creates increased safety hazards. Transportation agencies usually deploy engineers to the field to inspect signs because they need to evaluate and document the sign’s condition based on established standards and engineering judgment. This process requires substantial time and cost and becomes challenging to apply across large highway networks.

This study evaluated two computer vision (CV) models for automated traffic sign condition assessment using highway images collected across …

A Laboratory Investigation Of Energy Dissipators At Embankment Dams, Nathan L. Young Aug 2026

A Laboratory Investigation Of Energy Dissipators At Embankment Dams, Nathan L. Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Dams play a critical role in protecting communities from flooding and providing reliable water supplies. When large amounts of water pass through a dam’s spillway during floods, the discharge can travel at high speeds and carry potentially destructive kinetic energy that can damage the dam or erode downstream channels if that energy is not properly controlled. To reduce this risk, engineers commonly use hydraulic structures called energy dissipators that slow spillway discharge and safely release it downstream.

Commonly used energy dissipators at embankment dams include stilling basins that rely on a hydraulic jump – a sudden rise in water depth …

Gender And Bill Changes In Congress: An Analysis Of Women-Sponsored And Women's Issue Bills, Kipling B. Corry Aug 2026

Gender And Bill Changes In Congress: An Analysis Of Women-Sponsored And Women's Issue Bills, Kipling B. Corry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Women have faced historical disadvantages in American politics, generally, and in their positions as lawmakers. Bills in Congress, proposed by men and women alike, often undergo various textual changes before becoming law. This thesis explores how the gender of lawmakers and the gendered issues found within bills affect these changes. Are bills that are proposed by women disproportionately altered more than bills proposed by men? And are bills that concern women’s policy issues disproportionately altered more than bills that do not? This thesis investigates these questions by first presenting two original datasets and a full bill text file that introduce …

A Data-Driven Nutrient Density Scoring Framework For Beef Using Principal Component Analysis, Teja Vuppala Aug 2026

A Data-Driven Nutrient Density Scoring Framework For Beef Using Principal Component Analysis, Teja Vuppala

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Beef is one of the most nutrient-rich foods in the human diet, providing high-quality protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and a wide range of other compounds important to health. However, current nutrition scoring systems used on food labels were designed to compare different foods to one another — for example, beef versus broccoli — and do not work well for judging the nutritional quality of different beef samples relative to each other. A grass-fed steak and a conventionally-finished steak can carry nearly identical Nutrition Facts panels while differing substantially in their content of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Coefficients In Three-Way, T-Port, Ball Valve, Tyler A. Mindrum Aug 2026

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Coefficients In Three-Way, T-Port, Ball Valve, Tyler A. Mindrum

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Many systems that move fluids, like water distribution networks and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, rely on valves to control flow. This study evaluates a three-way valve, which can direct flow in multiple directions, but has not been extensively researched. Testing included physical data collection and computer simulations to compare how the valves behaved under different valve openings and flow conditions. The results showed that computer simulations can predict the general flow behavior of three-way valves, but that physical testing is still important, especially for valves with complex internal geometries.

Seizure Susceptibility And Morphological Analysis Of A Missense Mutation In Hcfc1a Protein, Jose Manuel Fabela Aug 2026

Seizure Susceptibility And Morphological Analysis Of A Missense Mutation In Hcfc1a Protein, Jose Manuel Fabela

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Missense mutations in the HCFC1 gene cause methymalonic acidemia with homocystinuria cblX type (MIM#309541). cblX is an X-linked disorder that is associated with multiple phenotypes such as metabolic defects, failure to thrive, intractable epilepsy, facial dysmorphia, movement disorders, and intellectual disability. The mechanisms underlying these phenotypes are not completely understood. Here we used a zebrafish germline mutant allele (hcfc1aco64/co64) to study seizure susceptibility and adult brain structural malformations. Previous studies have established neural progenitor cell defects and hypoactive mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) in this allele. Given the known role of mTOR in seizure phenotypes, we hypothesized that missense mutation …

A Hybrid Machine Learning-Based Feasibility Prediction Of 3d Mechanical Designs Using Scalar And Geometric Features, Md Mohsin Uddin Fahim Aug 2026

A Hybrid Machine Learning-Based Feasibility Prediction Of 3d Mechanical Designs Using Scalar And Geometric Features, Md Mohsin Uddin Fahim

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The computational bottleneck of structural feasibility screening frequently hinders the transition from a digital 3D model to a physically manufactured component. Traditionally, engineers have relied on either overly rigid heuristic constraint checks or computationally exhaustive finite element simulations. To address this inefficiency, this thesis proposes and validates a hybrid machine-learning framework to predict the structural manufacturability of 3D mechanical designs. Moving beyond the conventional reliance on isolated scalar parameters, the proposed methodology extracts and integrates both scalar manufacturing constraints (e.g., tolerance, minimum feature thickness) and spatial geometric descriptors (e.g., bounding volume, aspect ratio) directly from STL mesh data. Utilizing a …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a significant public health challenge worldwide, yet little is known about the prevalence of diabetes risk factors among landscaping workers, an understudied occupational group. The purpose of this pilot study was to estimate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes risk factors among landscaping workers in El Paso, Texas. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 20 landscaping workers. Participants completed a structured questionnaire and underwent anthropometric measurements, blood pressure assessment, point-of-care lipid and glucose testing, and vitamin D screening. Sixteen type 2 diabetes risk factors were assessed across seven domains: …

Herd: A Policy-Driven Elastic Resource Distribution Framework For Hpc Deep Learning, Alejandro Guerrero Rodriguez Aug 2026

Herd: A Policy-Driven Elastic Resource Distribution Framework For Hpc Deep Learning, Alejandro Guerrero Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modern deep learning workloads increasingly rely on distributed computation, and High Performance Computing systems can provide the necessary resources through large GPU allocations across interconnected nodes. Despite this, most distributed training frameworks operate under static resource assignments once a job is deployed. Research on NERSC Perlmutter has shown that 50% of GPU-enabled jobs use 25% or less of available GPU memory, and elastic training can reduce this underutilization by dynamically adjusting active workers. However, existing elastic systems have been developed mainly for cloud environments where fault tolerance and cost optimization are the primary concerns. Applying elastic training to HPC environments …

Ai-Assisted Import Of Static Requirements Documents Into Sysml Models Using A Vibe-Coded Plugin Approach, Joshua Larson Aug 2026

Ai-Assisted Import Of Static Requirements Documents Into Sysml Models Using A Vibe-Coded Plugin Approach, Joshua Larson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) promises a single authoritative model in place of static documents, but the translation of requirements documents into that model remains manual, slow, and dependent on scarce modeling expertise. This thesis asks whether an AI-assisted workflow can automate that translation, and whether the tooling itself can be built by vibe coding, in which a practitioner directs an AI in natural language rather than writing code directly. The result is a plugin for Magic Systems of Systems Architect (MSoSA) 2022x that reads a PDF requirements document, extracts requirements through the Anthropic Claude API, and generates a SysML model …

Where Electrons Localize And Bonds Vibrate: Computational Insights Into Lanthanides And Octanoic Acid., Sonam Choki Lhamo Aug 2026

Where Electrons Localize And Bonds Vibrate: Computational Insights Into Lanthanides And Octanoic Acid., Sonam Choki Lhamo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a widely used approach for studying the electronic and vibrational properties of atomic and molecular systems. It provides a practical balance between accuracy and computational cost, making it suitable for a broad range of applications in quantum chemistry and materials science. The primary focus of this thesis is the electronic structure of lanthanide atoms, where strongly localized 4f electrons give rise to significant self-interaction errors in conventional density functional approximations. The performance of the Perdew-Zunger self-interaction correction (PZSIC) and the locally scaled self-interaction correction (LSIC) approach developed by Zope et al. is investigated using both …

A Computational Approach To Electronic Coupling In Molecular Dyads, Irving Alejandro Lopez Ruiz Aug 2026

A Computational Approach To Electronic Coupling In Molecular Dyads, Irving Alejandro Lopez Ruiz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Excitation energy transfer (EET) is a fundamental process in photosynthetic systems and molecular photonic devices, where the efficient transport of electronic excitation between donor and acceptor chromophores determines the overall performance of the system. The electronic coupling V_DA between the transition densities of the two fragments is the central quantity governing this process in the weak-coupling (Förster) regime, and its accurate numerical evaluation is the main objective of this work. Two independent computational implementations of the Coulomb interaction between transition densities were developed and applied to a set of five anthracene-BODIPY donor-acceptor dyads, studied under two geometric configurations: one preserving …

Learning To Unlearn: Unlearning And Meta-Unlearning For Continually Adapting Cybersecurity Threat Detectors, Daniel Lucio Aug 2026

Learning To Unlearn: Unlearning And Meta-Unlearning For Continually Adapting Cybersecurity Threat Detectors, Daniel Lucio

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Machine learning (ML) models deployed in non-stationary environments must continually adapt to evolving data distributions. This challenge is particularly critical in cybersecurity, where malware, intrusion techniques, and adversarial behaviors evolve over time. Continual learning primarily enables incorporating new knowledge while preserving prior knowledge, however, indiscriminately retaining obsolete and harmful information can hinder future adaptation and consume limited model capacity. We argue that effective adaptation should not only acquire new knowledge, but also selectively discard obsolete and less useful historical knowledge before learning from a new distribution. In this work, we propose a meta-learning framework that learns what to forget to …

Prevention Vs Detection: A Discrete-Event Simulation Assessment Of Inspection Staffing, Pick-To-Light, And Ai-Based Inspection In Aerospace Wire Harness Kitting, Jorge Mares Aug 2026

Prevention Vs Detection: A Discrete-Event Simulation Assessment Of Inspection Staffing, Pick-To-Light, And Ai-Based Inspection In Aerospace Wire Harness Kitting, Jorge Mares

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Aerospace wire harness manufacturing operates under conditions that standard industrial engineering methods were not designed to address. Volumes are low, configurations change between orders, assembly is performed manually by certified labor that cannot be expanded quickly, and IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 acceptance requires that every unit be verified rather than sampled. Kit assembly concentrates the resulting risk, because each item retrieved from the rack is an independent selection decision, and the attributes distinguishing a correct item from an incorrect one are frequently not visible to the operator. Errors introduced there are discovered downstream, after substantial certified labor has been invested. A …

Electrical Characterization Of Wide-Bandgap Devices Via Laboratory Measurements, Tcad Simulation, And Analytical Modeling, Sebastian Alessandro Mimbela Aug 2026

Electrical Characterization Of Wide-Bandgap Devices Via Laboratory Measurements, Tcad Simulation, And Analytical Modeling, Sebastian Alessandro Mimbela

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Gallium nitride (GaN) devices are important for high-power, high-frequency, and harsh-environment applications because of their wide bandgap, high breakdown capability, and electrical performance. This thesis focuses on the electrical characterization of GaN-based devices using laboratory measurements, analytical modeling, and TCAD simulation. Current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were performed on a GaN Schottky diode. The measured data were analyzed to extract key parameters such as ideality factor, Schottky barrier height, series resistance, donor concentration, built-in potential, depletion width, and maximum electric field. A TCAD process was also developed in Synopsys Sentaurus to recreate the main geometry, layer structure, contacts, and …

Hfir Antineutrino Flux Mapping With Scale Mesh Tallies, Jacob Adam Mireles Aug 2026

Hfir Antineutrino Flux Mapping With Scale Mesh Tallies, Jacob Adam Mireles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis develops and demonstrates a workflow for mapping the spatial distribution of reactor electron antineutrino flux around the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) using three-dimensional mesh tallies from the SCALE 6.3.1 Monte Carlo transport suite. A detailed HFIR model is executed with KENO, and the mesh-tally output is post-processed to construct a voxelized antineutrino source term. The source field is normalized to reactor power and propagated to sampled spatial points surrounding the reactor to generate three-dimensional source-side flux maps. The main analysis focuses on how the mesh-based HFIR antineutrino flux differs from an ideal point-source approximation. In the point-source …

Physics Model Calibration Via Functional Kernel Regression, Kwesi Appau Ohene-Obeng Aug 2026

Physics Model Calibration Via Functional Kernel Regression, Kwesi Appau Ohene-Obeng

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Physics based computational simulators encode the governing equations of complex physical phenomena through parameters that must be inferred from empirical observations, and the observational record in modern experimental campaigns is increasingly a high dimensional functional response rather than a scalar summary. The canonical treatment of this calibration problem through the additive discrepancy decomposition of Kennedy and O'Hagan incurs O(N^3obs) Gaussian process inversion costs at functional resolution, sensitivity to discrepancy prior specification, and the confounding identifiability between the calibration parameter and the discrepancy function; scalar reduction strategies bypass the cost but discard the morphological information that the functional response carries about …
