Casa Renovations: Examining Social Responses To An Anthropomorphic Media Representative That Is Separate From The Core Technology Being Represented, Rabindra Ratan, Dayeoun Jang, Taenyun Kim, Kelsey Earle, Gabriel E. Hales, Yiming Skylar Lei, Chaeyun Lim, Andrew Gambino
Human-Machine Communication
To extend our understanding of CASA and account for changes in technological complexity and configuration, this research asks: Do increasing levels of social cues in a media representative that is separate from the core technology it represents lead to increased perceived anthropomorphism of the core technology? And does such perceived anthropomorphism predict positive treatment of the core technology? We conducted two complementary studies observing e-scooter use and treatment, an online experiment focused on responses to video stimuli and a field experiment focused on actual user behavior. Findings suggest that, indeed, social cues in a media representative (i.e., an e-scooter rental …

Transformations And Revelations: The Communicative Constitution Of Trustworthiness And Trust Through Ai Development Practices, Tessa Bruijne, Anouk Mols, Jason Pridmore
Human-Machine Communication
This study explores AI development practices to understand how trustworthiness is built into AI systems, and how this generates trust in AI. Through a multi-sited ethnography based methodology, we analyze observations, interviews, and documentation from AI developers working on trustworthy AI. Our analysis shows two key practices: transformation and revelation. Through transformational AI development practices trustworthiness is (re)constituted, though more or lesser degrees. Through revelation practices, AI developers communicatively engage with others to generate trust. This focus on developers adds to the user-centric perspective and shows the role nontechnical development practices have in shaping trust and trustworthy AI before it …
Socio-Technical Exchange With Machines: Worker Experiences With Complex Work Technologies, Cameron W. Piercy, Reaia Turner-Leatherman
Socio-Technical Exchange With Machines: Worker Experiences With Complex Work Technologies, Cameron W. Piercy, Reaia Turner-Leatherman
Human-Machine Communication
Machines are now commonplace work partners and Human-Machine Communication (HMC) is part of modern work. Guided by the machine heuristic and Social Exchange Theory (SET) this paper uses interviews with 22 workers to explore the socio-technical relationships between humans and machines at work. Participants worked with complex machines across a wide variety of industries and roles and findings reveal participants see machines as part of the work ecosystem, develop everyday machine heuristics to guide repeated interactions with machines, and that elements of human uniqueness persist in evaluations of humans and machines. Discussion points emphasize situated and developing human-machine interaction scripts, …

Human-Machine Communication
This essay—which is not only about human-machine collaboration but is a performance in human-machine collaboration—interrogates the shifting terrain of authorship and creativity in the age of generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Challenging both the instrumentalist view of technology and the romantic myth of the singular genius, it argues for a reconceptualization of creative production as distributed, dialogical, and co-constituted. Drawing on both theoretical innovations in poststructuralism and the practices of pre- and post-modern content creators, the essay repositions the algorithm not as a mere tool but as an active participant in the generation of meaning. In doing so, it exposes and …
Being And Becoming In Human-Machine Communication: Core Commitments And Conceptual Foundations Of A Trans-Ontological Field, Autumn P. Edwards, Katrin Etzrodt
Being And Becoming In Human-Machine Communication: Core Commitments And Conceptual Foundations Of A Trans-Ontological Field, Autumn P. Edwards, Katrin Etzrodt
Human-Machine Communication
This introduction traces the emergence of Human-Machine Communication (HMC) as a distinct field centered on communication across ontological boundaries. Arguing that HMC is not merely about interacting with machines but about how communicative presence and legitimacy are constituted, the authors introduce the Act–Mean–Relate (AMR) paradigm to conceptualize how machines’ capacity for action, signification, and relation enable communication. HMC challenges human exceptionalism by shifting focus from internal states and categorical differences to symbolic and relational dynamics. It addresses the interpretive labor involved in making machine others intelligible and emphasizes communication as the co-construction of social reality. The article highlights tensions between …

Short-Term Solutions, Long-Term Problems—The U.S. Navy’S Approach To Mines During The Tanker War, Matthew Kastler
Naval War College Review
Mine warfare is a persistent threat to naval operations and ocean commerce, and yet it remains a persistent area of underinvestment by the U.S. Navy. The recent history of the Navy’s improvisational approach to emergent mine threats suggests how the Navy might succeed by “preparing to be unprepared” before it faces mines again.
Management Or Misdirection—Competing Logics For Military-To-Military Contacts Between Great-Power Rivals, Travis Sharp
Management Or Misdirection—Competing Logics For Military-To-Military Contacts Between Great-Power Rivals, Travis Sharp
Naval War College Review
Contacts between militaries have long been viewed as positive, but history demonstrates their potential for exploitation. The intensity of great-power competition requires a more thorough understanding of the logics behind these activities. This novel typology of the different motivations behind pursuing or engaging in contacts with another military suggests how planners and practitioners can best plan how, and whether, to engage with rivals and friends alike.

Phantom Tax Loopholes, Emily Cauble
Phantom Tax Loopholes, Emily Cauble
Florida Tax Review
This Article reports the results of a new survey of 726 U.S. adults designed to gauge people’s intuitions about tax law. Survey respondents consider several scenarios. In each scenario, the survey describes two ways that parties to a transaction can achieve their non-tax objectives. The two available routes are equivalent from a non-tax perspective. The survey asks respondents to provide their best guess about whether the two routes will produce the same or different U.S. federal income tax consequences. The survey asks respondents to rate on a five-point scale how confident they are that their answer is correct and to …
The Association Between Fairness And Judicial Decision-Making: Evidence From Tax Law, Jonathan Farrar, Harjot Mehmi
The Association Between Fairness And Judicial Decision-Making: Evidence From Tax Law, Jonathan Farrar, Harjot Mehmi
Florida Tax Review
Empirical literature on judicial decision-making has not yet considered the association between the normative value of fairness and judges’ decisions. Using a sample of tax cases at the Tax Court of Canada (2010–2019) containing 4,420 disputes, we investigate whether a litigant is significantly more likely to obtain a favorable outcome if there is a reference to fairness in the court judgment. Compared to disputes without a mention of fairness in the court judgment, disputes with any mention of fairness have a 51% greater likelihood of a successful outcome. Notably, even when a court judgment mentions fairness not clearly in favor …
The Impact Of Sec V. Jarkesy On Civil Tax Fraud Penalties, Bryan T. Camp
The Impact Of Sec V. Jarkesy On Civil Tax Fraud Penalties, Bryan T. Camp
Florida Tax Review
On June 27, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy. It held that when the SEC sought a $300,000 civil penalty against Mr. Jarkesy for securities fraud, the Seventh Amendment entitled him to a jury trial in an Article III court. The week before, the Tax Court, an Article I court, issued a decision upholding the IRS’s imposition of a $6.3 million civil penalty against a taxpayer for tax fraud. No jury was available. That has been true since 1862: no jury has ever been available to taxpayers facing fraud penalties, …
The Emergence Of Ai Chatbots In Education, Trek Martin
The Emergence Of Ai Chatbots In Education, Trek Martin
Journal of Graduate Education Research
The recent advent of popular AI applications in educational contexts has sparked renewed interest in the question of AI and guided learning platforms as teaching tools. What are the possibilities for learning? In the attempt to answer that question, limitations of the field must be brought to full attention, as well an understanding of whether or not those limitations will continue into the immediate future; this research examines the technical evolution of artificial intelligence in education, from early symbolic reasoning systems to modern machine-learning-based chatbots. It then examines that evolution in terms of the key challenges it faced throughout, and …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary This project was an evidence-based staff education initiative to reduce alarm fatigue and enhance patient safety through telemetry optimization in an acute care setting. The core issue involved the overuse of continuous cardiac monitoring, which contributed to nonactionable alarms, alarm fatigue, workflow inefficiencies, delayed throughput, and increased costs. The project was a structured intervention delivered to 171 telemetry nurses across three inpatient units. Pretests and posttests measured changes in knowledge, intent, and practice. Results showed a 22.9% increase in knowledge, a 92% agreement regarding intention to follow discontinuation protocols, and a 10% overall reduction in practice of telemetry use …

The Red Dusk Coffee Shop: The Application Of Tension In The Cozy Fantasy Genre, Kelli M. Lynch
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the methods by which cozy fantasy writers apply literary tension within their works. Because they write within a genre that focuses on low stakes and high comfort, cozy fantasy writers must strike a balance between soothing the reader and keeping the reader interested in the narrative. The critical paper highlights several cozy fantasy writers and how they generate tension without compromising the genre-defining cozy essence. Finally, the thesis contains a complete cozy fantasy novella. The novella features Erik Juntunen, a coffee shop owner in the Keweenaw Peninsula who employs humans and figures …

Empowering Youth Tackle Football Athletes: A Content Analysis Of Nonlinear Pedagogy’S Influence On Autonomy And Practical Applications In Youth Tackle Football, Benjamin Jay Andelman
Masters Theses
Youth tackle football offers an environment that promotes both positive mental and physical benefits for young athletes. Despite the positive benefits associated with sports, participation is on the decline. The content analysis found connections between the prevailing prescriptive coaching methods in youth tackle football and the adverse mental effects on young athletes. This study, utilizing a qualitative content analysis of existing academic literature, proposes a practical application of Nonlinear Pedagogical principles in the youth tackle football practice context to develop a coaching model that promotes athlete autonomy, thereby increasing positive mental benefits for the youth athlete. Leveraging Ecological Dynamics, Constraints-Led …
An Analysis Of Feminist Biblical Scholarship Through Case Studies In Judges, Erika Conner
An Analysis Of Feminist Biblical Scholarship Through Case Studies In Judges, Erika Conner
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the rise and significance of feminist biblical scholarship, particularly as it engages the book of Judges. Feminist approaches to Scripture have often been criticized as politically motivated or ideologically biased, yet they also claim to offer corrective readings to centuries of male-dominated interpretation. This study situates feminist scholarship within its historical development and cultural context, beginning with the reconstruction of women’s societal, familial, religious, and agricultural roles in ancient Israel. Building on this foundation, it undertakes a comparative analysis of three key figures in Judges, Deborah, Jael, and the unnamed Woman of Thebez, first through traditional interpretations …

The Path Of Preparation: Engaging The Spirit’S Work In Your Soul To Be Ready For The Life God Has For You, Janelle Koontz
Masters Theses
Spiritual preparation is the ongoing act of engaging faith and life in a way that helps a follower of Jesus become more aware of what God is doing in his or her life. With a developed sense of how God is moving, followers of Jesus are able to engage surprises, both positive and negative, in a grounded way. This grounding is rooted in the knowledge that God is with them and that He has been working from before time and through their lives to get them ready for these moments. A biblical understanding of preparation based on word studies and …
Celebrating Their Voices: The Recognition Of African American Female Songwriters In Worship Music, Robin D. Henderson
Celebrating Their Voices: The Recognition Of African American Female Songwriters In Worship Music, Robin D. Henderson
Masters Theses
The worship community has been profoundly shaped by the contributions of numerous songwriters, many of whom remain largely unknown despite the widespread impact of their music. While enjoyed by the congregation, songs performed during corporate worship services are very rarely credited to/known by the songwriter(s). Songs heard on the radio are known by and often credited to the artist and not the songwriter. This research study, “Celebrating Their Voices: The Recognition of African American Female Songwriters in Worship Music,” explores the influence of 20th-century African American female Gospel songwriters whose compositions have become integral to African American worship experiences yet …

The Revolution Of Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him) In Ibn Al-Athir's Book (Al-Kamil Fi Al-Tarikh) - A Comparative Critical Study, Najeh Jamil Al-Safi
NJF Islamic University Journal
The Husayni Revolution, its events, and incidents have been extensively documented by numerous Muslim historians, historians, and compilers. They used a variety of information sources, such as written, oral, and eyewitness testimonies. Using a variety of contexts and techniques, Ibn al-Athir, who lived in the seventh century AH, gathered information on the Husayni Revolution (peace be upon him) from these sources for his work "Al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh" while also adding his own opinions and ideas. . In this case, the study aimed to apply a critical approach to the writings of Ibn al-Athir and other writers about the Husayni Revolution, …
The Radiance Of Mystical Content In Persian Poetry On Imam Hassan, Peace Be Upon Him, Samia Hassanalian
The Radiance Of Mystical Content In Persian Poetry On Imam Hassan, Peace Be Upon Him, Samia Hassanalian
NJF Islamic University Journal
Mysticism is a significant aspect of the Islamic religion, as it seeks to understand God and discover truths. Persian literature has a strong connection to mysticism, particularly in poems about the Prophet's Household. These themes became prominent after the Islamic Revolution, as Islamic rituals were revived. A study of Persian Hasani poetry revealed that poets used mystical terms like heart, longing, kindness, madness, and dignity to express their loyalty to Imam Hassan. They also called for abandoning the world as an obstacle to understanding God. The poems were distinguished by intellectual and moral richness, using rhetorical and aesthetic devices.
The General Policy Of State Administration Between The Concepts Of State And Government In Nahj Al-Balagha, Musab Mohammed Al-Tamimi
The General Policy Of State Administration Between The Concepts Of State And Government In Nahj Al-Balagha, Musab Mohammed Al-Tamimi
NJF Islamic University Journal
This study examines the concept of "the state" in Nahj al-Balagha, focusing on Imam Ali's sermons and letters. The state is not just a traditional political entity but a value system based on justice, equality, and human dignity. Imam Ali's project to rebuild the state emerged after the state's disintegration due to economic, social, and tribal transformations. The concept of "government" is linked to Imam Ali's philosophical and ethical structure, requiring rulers to adhere to principles of justice, transparency, and mercy. The research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of Nahj al-Balagha texts and its potential for contemporary political theories.
The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi
The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi
NJF Islamic University Journal
This study explores the unique status of Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), through the dual lenses of divine revelation and rational philosophy. It argues that her infallibility, authority, and role in Islamic history are not only rooted in prophetic lineage but also reinforced by rational principles intrinsic to Islamic epistemology. Drawing on Qur’anic verses, Hadiths, and classical Islamic scholarship, the paper examines how Fatimah represents a convergence between abstract reason and cognitive rationality, and how divine revelation elevated her to a status of spiritual and moral infallibility. …

NJF Islamic University Journal
God Almighty did not create creation in vain, but rather He created them to know Him and worship Him. This requires the existence of a creature who will be with creation from its beginning to its last day, who will be with them. He guides them and directs them as a successor to God on earth. And to complete God’s conclusive proof to creation, the earth will not be devoid of him, so the purpose will be negated, as stated in the hadith: And the earth will not be devoid of him. The earth is not devoid of God’s proof, …
