Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard Sep 2025

Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard

Electrical Engineering

The Staubli TX60 and TX60CR are industrial-grade, six-axis robotic arms originally designed to perform complex automation tasks in manufacturing environments. Following their retirement from active industrial use, both units were restored to full operational status. As part of this project, they were reprogrammed to execute a pick-and-place routine using kids shape-sorting toys that mirrors typical workflows found in factory settings. The six degrees of freedom afforded by each robot enable a wide range of motion, making them well-suited for tasks such as material handling, product sorting, and repetitive operations typically carried out by human workers. Each model is equipped with …

The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch Sep 2025

The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

In recent years, roughly 30 nations have implemented regulatory regimes that mandate some type of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions disclosure from corporations. As GHG emissions disclosure regimes continue to take hold, several key questions arise: will they prompt meaningful and sustained reductions, or will they merely serve to document corporations’ unabated emissions? And if these regimes do lead to lasting emissions reductions, precisely what causes the changes in companies’ behavior? These questions are particularly relevant as climate advocates grapple with the merits of disclosure as a tool for real emissions impact, and as policymakers refine disclosure requirements to best fit …

Drafting A Solution: Overcoming The Existential Crisis Of The Selective Service System, John L. Markel Sep 2025

Drafting A Solution: Overcoming The Existential Crisis Of The Selective Service System, John L. Markel

West Virginia Law Review

With the growing fears of a large-scale combat operation against a near-peer adversary, the United States may confront a need to fully mobilize its military for the first time since World War II. A full-scale mobilization would likely necessitate the return of conscription (a.k.a. the draft). The Selective Service System (“SSS”) is currently the federal agency that oversees and conducts the draft in accordance with the provisions of the Military Selective Service Act (“Act”). Yet, this Act has remained untouched for more than two decades, meaning the current conscription system is functionally identical to that used during the Vietnam War, …

Taming The Hegemon: Chinese Thinking On Countering U.S. Military Intervention In Asia, Joel Wuthnow Sep 2025

Taming The Hegemon: Chinese Thinking On Countering U.S. Military Intervention In Asia, Joel Wuthnow

China Strategic Perspectives

This publication is by INSS Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs Senior Research Fellow Dr. Joel Wuthnow. The monograph uses internal PLA writings to examine recent Chinese thinking on countering U.S. intervention in Asia, and finds that PLA experts emphasize efforts to leverage nuclear, conventional, and informational (space, cyber, and cognitive warfare) tools to deter U.S. intervention, but also advocate preparing for asymmetric attacks against key targets in the U.S. military system in case the United States intervenes anyway.

A Tailored Analog-To-Digital Converter Architecture For Optimal Performance In Troponin Cardiac Protein Detection, Karem Abdelgawad, Sameh O. Abdellatif Sep 2025

A Tailored Analog-To-Digital Converter Architecture For Optimal Performance In Troponin Cardiac Protein Detection, Karem Abdelgawad, Sameh O. Abdellatif

Electrical Engineering

In recent years, the detection of troponin cardiac proteins has emerged as a crucial component in the diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndromes. This paper presents a tailored analog-to digital converter(ADC) architecture specifically designed to enhance the performance of diagnostic systems for troponin detection. Utilizing a 180 nm CMOS process technology, the developed 8-bit Successive Approximation Register(SAR) ADC integrates key components, including a preamplifier, comparator, and a digital-to-analog converter(DAC), to optimize signal processing and ensure accurate data conversion from analog to digital formats. The ADC architecture is evaluated for its ability to achieve a substantial sampling rate of 10 …

The Efficacy And Usability Of Motivational Interviewing Just-In-Time Trainings For Youth Mentors, Mackenzie J. Hart, Samuel Mcquillin, Aidyn Iachini, Daniel K. Cooper, Mark D. Weist Sep 2025

The Efficacy And Usability Of Motivational Interviewing Just-In-Time Trainings For Youth Mentors, Mackenzie J. Hart, Samuel Mcquillin, Aidyn Iachini, Daniel K. Cooper, Mark D. Weist

Faculty Publications

Using youth mentors to deliver evidence-based psychosocial services has been proposed to increase the reach of treatments, in part given the affordability and ubiquity of mentors in youth settings. Further, tests of mentor-delivered motivational interviewing (MI) have shown increases in youth mentees' academic performance and wellbeing. Yet, traditional methods of training mentors to use MI can be costly and time-consuming. Previous work has suggested the value of asynchronous, brief, just-in-time training (JITT) to help offset these challenges; however, MI JITT for mentors has not yet been formally evaluated. As such, here, we report on a preliminary study of MI JITT …

Constitutional Rights As Protected Reasons, Stephanie Hall Barclay Sep 2025

Constitutional Rights As Protected Reasons, Stephanie Hall Barclay

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article proposes and defends a new theoretical model of constitutional rights. Virtually all the prevailing theories about constitutional rights envision, at some level, judges balancing the importance of various individual rights against the importance of other societal goods in tension with those rights. These theories also generally hold out the judiciary as the primary guardian of these rights, whereas the other political branches are often viewed as fulfilling a role of interfering with (or protecting) rights only as much as the judiciary will allow. This Article explains why the existing accounts of constitutional rights are either incoherent or incomplete. …

The Amended Statute, Jesse M. Cross Sep 2025

The Amended Statute, Jesse M. Cross

University of Chicago Law Review

We live in a republic of amended statutes. In each Congress, our laws are amended tens of thousands of times. Individual statutes make amendments that number in the thousands. As a result, the amended statute has become the central democratic text of our age—a remarkable development for a type of document unknown at the Founding. Yet the amended statute has been relegated to an after-thought in legal theory. This is incredible neglect for an essential source of modern law—one that anchors innumerable rights in U.S. society.

This Article demonstrates that, instead, the amended statute belongs at the center of public …

Price Adjustment Clauses: Enhanced Price Volatility Forecasting For Construction Materials, Ahmed Shiha, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway Sep 2025

Price Adjustment Clauses: Enhanced Price Volatility Forecasting For Construction Materials, Ahmed Shiha, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Price adjustment clauses (PACs) are used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to share the risk of material price fluctuations. Existing models that depict the price fluctuations of materials forecast a mean within a horizon while relying on the assumption of a constant volatility throughout that horizon. However, none of them examine whether the prices of construction material exhibit similar volatility following a sudden price surge or a price drop. The prospect of PACs and their associated trigger values is hindered in the absence of empirical assessments of their capacity to capture the volatilities in material prices. This paper fills …

Resource Assessment Report No. 5: West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Resource 2024 Assessment, Emma-Jade Tuffley, Simon De Lestang

Resource Assessment Reports

The West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean resource consists of crystal crab (snow) (Chaceon albus), champagne crab (spiny) (Hypothalassia acerba) and giant crab (Pseudocarcinus gigas). The resource is mainly accessed by the commercial West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Managed Fishery (WCDSCMF), which primarily targets crystal crabs. The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (WCRLMF) also retains a small amount of champagne crabs as byproduct of deep-water rock lobster fishing. The WCDSCMF is a pot-based fishery using baited pots operated in a long-line formation in shelf edge waters ( > 150 m in depth) off the West …
