Policy Surveillance Of Decommissioning And Decontamination Regulations, Joshua Gary Collins
Policy Surveillance Of Decommissioning And Decontamination Regulations, Joshua Gary Collins
All ETDs from UAB
Policy surveillance is an analytical collection and study of regulatory action within the public health field. Due to the vastness of the United States regulatory system, large amounts of time and effort are needed for policy surveillance to be accomplished. When considering nuclear decommissioning policies, all state and local regulations should start with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) requirements, however states have the freedom to increase stringency. Policy surveillance allows for both a convenient and approachable way to reference important regulations in a timely manner while also functioning as a method to identify and manage any inconsistencies found between the …
Parenting And Parental Well-Being As Risk And Resilience Factors For Mental Well-Being In Adolescents With And Without Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Wanqin Yu
All ETDs from UAB
Parenting practices and caregiver well-being are widely recognized as key determinants of adolescent mental health. However, few studies have examined how these factors operate in the context of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), particularly through a risk and resilience framework. This study investigated how positive and negative parenting practices, caregiver well-being, and parenting stress relate to adolescents’ emotional well-being and internalizing problems. It also explored whether these variables differed between adolescents with and without NDDs. Participants included 105 adolescents aged 11–14 years (61.9% female; 52.4% diagnosed with an NDD) and their caregivers, drawn from a larger study on adolescent socio-emotional competencies. Caregivers …

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and abnormalities in emotional expression, social interaction, and motivation. Cognitive deficits and alterations in perception are core features of psychosis spectrum disorders, though the neurobiological bases of these impairments are not thoroughly understood. Examination of the structures responsible for cognition, along with how their connectivity and neurochemistry are altered in psychosis, is crucial to understanding and treating schizophrenia. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and plays a crucial role in the regulation of neuronal activity. Evidence from animal models and postmortem …

The primary goal of this thesis is to improve upon existing dynamical system models in economics. Existing models utilizing Lotka-Volterra dynamics display a tendency to suffer from unrealistic forecasts dominated by exponential growth and decay. Additionally, current inverse methods are only applicable in differential equation systems with linear coefficients. In this body of work, we propose novel methods for handling these challenges.

The Longitudinal Associations Between The Longitudinal Associations Between Parent Involvement And Academic Achievement In Elementary School Involvement And Academic Achievement In Elementary School, Makayla Elizabeth Warnecke
All ETDs from UAB
Parent involvement has been positively linked to children’s academic outcomes (e.g., Chavkin, 1993; Eccles & Harold, 1993; Epstein, 1989, 1994; Hess & Holloway, 1984; Hobbs et al, 1984; U.S Department of Education, 1994). These outcomes include higher achievement test scores (Keith et al., 1986), better grades (NCES, 1985), and increased rates of secondary school completion (Chavkin & Williams, 1993; Delgado-Gaitan, 1988, 1992; Epstein, 1986, 1995; Angiano, 2004). However, gaps remain in the current state of research when investigating longterm implications. In a recent meta-analysis, researchers stated the lack of analyses using a longitudinal cross-lagged design as a future direction (Barger …

Scaling and root planing (ScRP) is the gold standard for non-surgical periodontal therapy, yet no dentifrice has been definitively shown to improve its outcomes. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of LivFresh Dental Gel as an adjunct to ScRP in patients with Stage II and III periodontitis. Twenty-one participants were assigned to either a test group using LivFresh Dental Gel or a control group using a standard sodium fluoride dentifrice. Clinical parameters—including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP)—were assessed at baseline, 30, 90, and 180 days. The …
Racial Discrimination And Inflammation In Adolescence: Ethnic/Racial Processes As Moderators, Queenisha Crichlow
Racial Discrimination And Inflammation In Adolescence: Ethnic/Racial Processes As Moderators, Queenisha Crichlow
All ETDs from UAB
Discrimination and other psychosocial stressors contribute to chronic disease by dysregulating neuroendocrine and immune systems, which often leads to increased levels of inflammation. Given that inflammation is a key biological pathway associated with the development of chronic diseases, it has been proposed as a potential mechanism linking racial discrimination to poorer health. Most studies linking racial discrimination with inflammation have focused on adults, despite the fact that children and adolescents also experience discrimination. This dissertation explores the association between racial discrimination and inflammation, measured via salivary C-reactive protein (CRP) and proinflammatory cytokines, among Black and Hispanic adolescents. It also examines …
Identifying The Neurobiological Substrates Of Gulf War Illness, Chloe Lisette Jones
Identifying The Neurobiological Substrates Of Gulf War Illness, Chloe Lisette Jones
All ETDs from UAB
Gulf War Illness (GWI) affects approximately 30% of veterans who served in the 1991 Persian Gulf War and is characterized by chronic pain and fatigue, as well as cognitive, mood, gastrointestinal, and respiratory symptoms. Animal research has suggested that GWI is caused by a combination of neurotoxicants such as nerve gas, anti-nerve agent pills, and pesticides, though a definitive pathophysiological model has not been established. In this human observational study, 20 veterans with GWI and 20 healthy Gulf War veterans (HV) underwent whole-brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to non-invasively measure several metabolites associated with neuroinflammation. Whole blood was also collected …
Myelin Mapping In Psychosis, Victoria Lynn King
Myelin Mapping In Psychosis, Victoria Lynn King
All ETDs from UAB
It is well established that myelin in the central nervous system is an axonal insulator which speeds the conduction velocity of action potentials. However, its role in the cortex has also been shown to support metabolic demands and aid in cortical plasticity. Myelin develops throughout childhood and adolescence from sensorimotor areas to association areas and peaks during adolescence. Importantly, this is the same time that psychosis-spectrum disorders (PSDs) begin to present clinically; thus, given the critical role of myelination in shaping the mature cortex, disruptions in this process – particularly during adolescence – are thought to partially explain the onset …
Structural Basis For Promoter Recognition By Pseudomonas Phage Dev Virion Associated Rna Polymerase, Brittney Bird
Structural Basis For Promoter Recognition By Pseudomonas Phage Dev Virion Associated Rna Polymerase, Brittney Bird
All ETDs from UAB
Bacteriophage DEV, a member of the Schitoviridae family, encodes a large virion-associated RNA polymerase (vRNAP) and shows significant potential for use in phage therapy. However, many aspects of DEV’s biology remain poorly understood, especially how it regulates transcription once inside the host. Recent work in our lab suggests that gene product 71 (gp71) functions as a DNA-dependent vRNAP. Analogous to the vRNAP of coliphage N4, gp71 likely initiates transcription by recognizing single-stranded DNA templates that contain early gene hairpin promoters. Based on this, my working hypothesis is that specific interactions between gp71 and the DEV early promoters PE1 and PE5 …

Lewy Body Dementias (LBDs), including Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (PDD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), are defined by α-synuclein (α-syn) accumulation in Lewy Pathology (LP). LP is abundant in cortical layer V intratelencephalic (IT) neurons, a subset of neurons that also degenerate in the pre-supplementary motor area (preSMA) in humans, which is homologous to the secondary motor cortex (M2) in mice, as observed in PD postmortem tissue. IT neuron projections to the striatum are an intrinsic part of the motor basal ganglia circuitry, believed to modulate cognitive aspects of executive motor control, such as updating motor plans. M2 projections to …
Characterizing The Role Of Pneumococcal Surface Protein A And Humoral Immunity To Biofilm Antigens During Streptococcus Pneumoniae Colonization, Jessica Lane
All ETDs from UAB
Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), or “the pneumococcus”, is a Gram-positive bacterium that colonizes the upper respiratory tract as a pathobiont. Spn is a deadly human pathogen, and one of the leading etiological agents of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). One virulence factor of Spn is pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA), a choline-binding protein (CBP) at the surface of the bacteria that interacts with the host environment. Here, we demonstrated a novel role for PspA involving adhesion to dying host nasal epithelial cells via a multimeric complex with host lactoferrin (LF) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). We found that the PspA-GAPDH complex aggregated the bacteria …
Effect Of Fiber Structure Heterogeneity On The Estimation Of Material Parameters For Cardiac Scar Tissue Mechanics, Desmond Maximilian Flanagan
Effect Of Fiber Structure Heterogeneity On The Estimation Of Material Parameters For Cardiac Scar Tissue Mechanics, Desmond Maximilian Flanagan
All ETDs from UAB
Over one million Americans suffer from myocardial infarction (MI) per year. After MI, the heart muscle is replaced by scar, whose mechanical properties play a critical role in outcomes for surviving patients. Previously, Caggiano et al. induced MI in rats, and ex-tracted the scar tissue samples for microscopy and mechanical testing. Building on this, we investigate the effect of incorporating microscopy-derived fiber heterogeneity on the estimation of stress and material parameters. We studied the effect of fiber orientation heterogeneity on the mechanical characteriza-tion of scar tissues using finite element models (FEM) that replicated biaxial tests. We used three constitutive models—Mooney-Rivlin, …
Influenza A Virus Increases Susceptibility To Streptococcus Pneumoniae By Damaging The Airway Epithelium, Erin Yepsen Earnhardt
Influenza A Virus Increases Susceptibility To Streptococcus Pneumoniae By Damaging The Airway Epithelium, Erin Yepsen Earnhardt
All ETDs from UAB
Influenza A Virus (IAV) is commonly complicated by secondary bacterial infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Recent work from our lab demonstrates that an IAV-induced loss of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in the airway disrupts the rheostatic properties of the airway surface liquid (ASL). In cystic fibrosis, caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, there is an increase in the bacterial burden of the airway. However, the underlying mechanisms and damage caused by IAV-induced CFTR dysfunction in the airway remains unknown. Using a primary differentiated human bronchial airway epithelial cell culture (HBEC) system, …
The Eco-Evolutionary Consequences Of Spatial Patterning Of Macroalgal Life Cycle Stages And Reproductive Mode Variation, Alexis Oetterer
The Eco-Evolutionary Consequences Of Spatial Patterning Of Macroalgal Life Cycle Stages And Reproductive Mode Variation, Alexis Oetterer
All ETDs from UAB
Haploid-diploid life cycles offer valuable insight into the evolution of sex and ploidy cycling, but empirical research has largely focused on diploid-dominant taxa, such as angiosperms. Expanding empirical studies to include a broader range of eukaryotic diversity is critical to ultimately understand responses to climate change. This dissertation addresses gaps in our understanding of macroalgal reproductive modes by examining macroalgae Gracilaria vermiculophylla and Ulva spp. along the Delmarva Peninsula. To understand how hard and soft bottom habitats have structured genetic diversity and reproductive modes in Gracilaria vermiculophylla and how these habitats have shaped colonization of this area, we used nine …
Lineage-Associated Zinc Metalloprotease B And Its Impact On Cardiac Damage Elicited During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Jennifer Nichelle Luck
Lineage-Associated Zinc Metalloprotease B And Its Impact On Cardiac Damage Elicited During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Jennifer Nichelle Luck
All ETDs from UAB
During invasive disease, certain strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) can invade the myocardium, damaging cardiomyocytes and predisposing patients to life-threatening cardiac complications. To identify genetic loci involved in pneumococcal cardio-virulence, we performed a bacterial genome-wide association study using 825 genomes corresponding to 17 distinct Spn lineages associated with varying rates of cardiac complications during hospitalization for pneumonia. This led to the identification of an allele of zmpB, the gene encoding Zinc metalloprotease B (ZmpB). Infection of mice with a ZmpB deficient mutant, i.e., TIGR4ΔzmpB, found that ZmpB was required to form foci of infection in the heart, i.e., cardiac microlesions. …

Modeling The Basal Ganglia Network Using Leaky Integrate-And-Fire Neurons To Explore Its Role In Facilitating Purposive Saccades, Saarth Anjali Chitale
All ETDs from UAB
Saccadic eye movements provide a well-defined behavioral readout for investigating how the basal ganglia (BG) contribute to action selection. While saccades are controlled by multiple brain regions, including direct excitatory inputs from various cortices, the BG exerts a key inhibitory influence. Decades of experimental work using saccadic behavioral paradigms in non-human primates have yielded important insights into the activity of BG populations. These include the caudate nucleus, subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus externus, and substantia nigra pars reticulata, as well as dopaminergic afferents from the substantia nigra pars compacta and efferent projections to the superior colliculus, which controls eye movements. Despite …

Virulence Factors And Their Binding Partners: A Biochemical Study, Morgan E. Blake
All ETDs from UAB
Virulence factors are an important mechanism by which viruses combat the host immune system, therefore a thorough understanding of the workings of these proteins will be of significant value in prevention of disease associated with viral infections. In this dissertation we investigate the main virulence factors of two viruses, the Influenza A Virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2, and their interactions with host proteins, providing critical information for structure-based drug design. In chapter one we studied the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) of IAV and its interaction with the 30-kda subunit of the cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF30) to inhibit host cell …
Structural And Functional Investigation Of The Influenza Nuclear Export Protein, Andrew James Staup
Structural And Functional Investigation Of The Influenza Nuclear Export Protein, Andrew James Staup
All ETDs from UAB
The influenza A nuclear export protein (NEP) is a multi-functional protein that mediates the export of progeny viral ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) complexes from the host nucleus, regulates the activity of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and is implicated in zoonosis. It is therefore critical to understand the mechanisms of NEP’s functions at the molecular level to inform its roles in the viral lifecycle and influenza zoonosis. In this dissertation, we report the structure of NEP in complex with the host nuclear export holo-complex as well as investigate the biophysical effects of the adaptive M16I mutation on NEP. We solved the cryo-electron …
Those Who Strayed: Quaker Abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, And The Grimké Sisters Who Broke From The Society Of Friends To Actively Oppose Slavery In The Antebellum Era, David Mark Ledlow
All ETDs from UAB
The adoption of quietist theology by the Quaker community in the early nineteenth century created a divide between Quakers and their abolitionist movement due to the differing methods to achieve an end to slavery. Quaker society began to adopt a stance that avoided all controversies and employed conservative actions to combat slavery while abolitionist began to speak out more against the evils of slavery regardless of any controversy. This divided left Quaker abolitionist like John Greenleaf Whittier and the Grimké sisters with the choice to distance themselves from the Society of Friends or the abolitionist movement. Whittier and the Grimké …

Introduction: Many healthcare organizations have experienced cybersecurity related phishing email attacks, costing these organizations many thousands to many millions of dollars to release ransomed data to maintain patient care delivery and operations. Use of technology alone has proven to be insufficient, as most occurrences of data breaches are related to human behaviors. Background: Cybersecurity is a threat increasingly common to healthcare organizations, and it is gaining in both sophistication and complexity, aided by artificial intelligence. Healthcare organizations have adopted new technologies and increased the prevalence of cybersecurity training to develop a healthy cyber culture and construct a human firewall against …

The overall goal of this research is to understand the mechanism of phase transformations in far-from-equilibrium micro/nano-structures produced by additive manufacturing of compositionally complex alloys. The eutectic high entropy alloys based on nickel were selected for this study because of their high tensile strength as well as high ductility. This study examines the high-pressure behavior and phase transformations of laser powder-bed fusion manufactured eutectic high-entropy alloys, specifically AlCoCrFeNi2.1 and Al18Co20Cr10Fe10Ni40W2. Both alloys exhibit a nano-lamellar structure composed of body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic phases. The BCC to FCC phase transformation under high pressures was observed below 21 Giga-Pascals (GPa) in …

Radio And Television Media And Health-Seeking Behavior Among Women In Rural Northern Nigeria, Olufolake Akeju
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Poor maternal health-seeking behavior (MHSB) has contributed to persistently high maternal mortality in rural northern Nigeria. Despite increasing access to health information via media platforms, little is known about the association between media exposure and MHSB in this region. In this study, the association between mass media exposure (radio and television) and MHSB was investigated using institutional delivery as a proxy. The health belief model was applied as the theoretical framework for this study and sought to answer two key questions focused on whether there is an association between media exposure and MHSB in rural northern Nigeria and what the …
Counselors With A History Of Sexual Abuse Who Work With Sexually Violent Offenders, Chandra L. Goodwin
Counselors With A History Of Sexual Abuse Who Work With Sexually Violent Offenders, Chandra L. Goodwin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on counselors who treat sexually violent offenders has emphasized professional challenges, ethical dilemmas, and vicarious trauma, while less attention has been given to clinicians with personal histories of sexual abuse who may face added strain yet also bring unique empathy and resilience to their work. Addressing this gap is critical for the counseling profession, as it informs how training, supervision, and wellness practices can be structured to better support clinicians with lived trauma histories. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of counselors with personal histories of sexual abuse who work with sexually violent offenders. Grounded in interpretative phenomenological …

Dilated Coronary Sinus Causing Left Ventricular Inflow Obstruction: Decision On Surgical Intervention, Hamood N. Al Kindi, Madan M. Maddali, Justin Tretter
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: A significantly dilated coronary sinus causing left ventricular inflow obstruction presents a challenging dilemma during surgical repair of associated anomalies. We report a 5-month-old male infant was referred to a national heart centre in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 with a persistent left superior caval vein, dilated coronary sinus, partially anomalous pulmonary venous drainage and a large atrial septal defect, resulting in left ventricular inflow obstruction and low cardiac output. The dilated coronary sinus intensified a left-to-right shunt, leading to left ventricular underfilling and early heart failure symptoms. Although surgical correction was planned, direct intervention on the coronary sinus …
