A Deep Learning Framework For Early Autism Detection Using Eeg Signals, Maha M. Hamzeh, Ali Y. Al-Sultan, Salah Al-Obaidi
A Deep Learning Framework For Early Autism Detection Using Eeg Signals, Maha M. Hamzeh, Ali Y. Al-Sultan, Salah Al-Obaidi
Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complicated neurodevelopmental illness, affecting social interaction, communication, and cognitive function. To lower healthcare costs and facilitate prompt intervention, early and accurate detection is crucial. However, behavioral assessments—which are inherently subjective and can lead to delayed diagnoses—are a significant component of traditional diagnostic procedures. This paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) and time-frequency analysis-based early ASD screening using EEG signals. EEG data undergoes a preprocessing step to remove noise and power interference. After that, the signals were divided into 5-, 10-, and 20-second time frames. Each EEG time frame segment is represented in the …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
An adult female (26 years old) with a chief complaint of poor dental alignment, deep bite, and maxillary protrusion came for orthodontic evaluation. Clinical examination indicated Class II canine relationship combined with large overbite and overjet and accentuated Curve of Spee. Radiographic examination showed skeletal Class II and lower right first molar missing. Improved Super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire (ISW, developed by Institute of Science Tokyo) curve was added over the lower arch to flatten Curve of Spee, and extraction of bilateral upper first premolars with intramaxillary elastics to perform anterior retraction was considered. At the end of treatment, we achieved …

Goal-Oriented Aesthetic Treatment (Goat): A Systematic Framework For Three-Dimensional Facial Aesthetic Assessment — Part 2: Sagittal Dimension, Heng-Ming Chang, Yu-Chun Su, Min-Hsun Hsu, Yu-Ting Lin, Chih-Wei Wang
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Facial aesthetics is a multidimensional concept that requires an integrative assessment of the sagittal, vertical, and transverse planes to achieve balance and harmony. Following the evaluation of the vertical dimension in Part I, this review focuses on the sagittal plane, which plays a pivotal role in facial profile balance and anteroposterior skeletal relationships. The Goal-Oriented Aesthetic Treatment (GOAT) framework provides a structured methodology for diagnosing and addressing sagittal discrepancies, incorporating clinical reference lines, chin morphology, incisor inclination, and anchorage considerations. A comprehensive assessment of the sagittal dimension involves the use of key diagnostic tools such as the Barcelona Line (BL), …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Facial aesthetics is a multidimensional concept that requires an integrative assessment of the sagittal, vertical, and transverse planes to achieve balance and harmony. Among these, the vertical dimension plays a crucial role in determining facial proportions, occlusal function, and overall aesthetic perception. This review introduces the Goal-Oriented Aesthetic Treatment (GOAT) framework as a systematic approach to evaluating the vertical aspects of facial aesthetics, providing a structured methodology for clinical assessment and treatment planning. A comprehensive evaluation of the vertical dimension encompasses several key parameters, including facial pattern classification, vertical proportions, lip competency, and overbite analysis. Traditional cephalometric indices, such as …

Previously, we identified the only dinitrogen reduction mechanism known to date as an ancient feature conserved from nitrogenase ancestors, which we directly tested by resurrecting and integrating synthetic ancestral nitrogenases into the genome of Azotobacter vinelandii (Garcia et al., 2023), a genetically tractable, nitrogen-fixing model bacterium. Here, we extend this paleomolecular approach to investigate the structural evolution of nitrogenase over billions of years of evolution by combining phylogenetics, ancestral sequence reconstruction, protein crystallography, and deep-learning based predictions. This study reveals that nitrogenase, while maintaining a conserved multimeric core, evolved novel modular features aligned with major environmental transitions, suggesting that subtle …

The Hepatic Glucagon Receptor As A Novel Regulator Of Lifespan, Alexander Tate Lasher
The Hepatic Glucagon Receptor As A Novel Regulator Of Lifespan, Alexander Tate Lasher
All ETDs from UAB
In developed nations the average lifespan has nearly doubled over the last 200 years, and the proportion of humans living into old age is ever increasing. While this is certainly a testament to the effectiveness of modern medicine and infrastructure, it presents a unique challenge to public health. Gains to health have not necessarily kept pace with the gains in lifespan, and the expanding aged population positions age-associated diseases to reach unprecedented prevalence. In light of this challenge, a mechanistic understanding of the aging process is necessary to identify factors that control longevity and to ultimately develop strategies for healthy …

Analysis Of Telomeric Conformational Dynamics At The Single Molecule Level, Arianna Lacen
All ETDs from UAB
In eukaryotes, the telomere serves as a safeguard against DNA damage and loss during replication and other events. To do so, telomeric DNA folds into a variety of protective secondary and tertiary structures whose formation and conformational dynamics have not been well characterized. We have identified a slow conformational rearrangement in telomeric single stranded DNA that results in a G-Quadruplex (G4) that cannot be unfolded by a complementary strand. We have also determined how the accessibility of G4 forming sequences changes in response to different high K+ environments, which may have implications on how the nascent telomeric overhang interacts with …

How Medical Mistrust Serves As A Barrier To Mental Health Treatment In The African American Community, Nicholas Young
How Medical Mistrust Serves As A Barrier To Mental Health Treatment In The African American Community, Nicholas Young
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Throughout history, research has depicted the notion that African Americans do not make use of mental health treatment, even when their mental health status may deem it clinically necessary. One of the most prevalent deterrents to African Americans seeking treatment is the mistrust of the medical system. In the African American community, medical mistrust has a longstanding history that stems from the discrimination, racism, lack of representation in the field, and medical mistreatment that African Americans received as test subjects by the medical community over time. Various instances, throughout history, of African Americans being unjustly treated— for the sake of …

An Adaptive Force Matching Potential For Alanine Developed With Møller-Plesset Perturbation Theory And Smooth Fourier Transform Correction Map, Ying Yuan, Feng Wang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Developing accurate force fields for biomolecules remains a significant challenge due to the subtle energetic differences between various conformational states. We present a novel force field model for polyalanine, ALAMP2_25, developed using adaptive force matching (AFM) with M & oslash;ller-Plesset perturbation theory at the second order (MP2) as the reference method. By fitting smaller model compounds and transferring parameters to larger peptides, we overcome the limitations of traditional AFM approaches and enable the use of more accurate electronic structure methods. The ALAMP2_25 model incorporates a new correction scheme, Smooth Fourier Transform-based phi, psi correction map (SFT-CMAP), which efficiently describes phi, …

Breath Acetone As A Biomarker For Concussion, Allyn Abadie
Breath Acetone As A Biomarker For Concussion, Allyn Abadie
All ETDs from UAB
Concussions represent a critical public health concern, affecting millions annually yet remain challenging to diagnose and manage. Concussions involve a range of often invisible signs and symptoms. Traditional assessments rely heavily on subjective symptom reporting, with limited objective data which may complicate return-to-play decisions. Objective physiological biomarkers are needed to complement traditional methods, detect subtle disruptions, and improve decision-making. Following concussion, the brain undergoes a neurometabolic cascade involving disrupted glucose utilization, ionic imbalances, neurotransmitter release, and reduced cerebral blood flow. This cascade creates a metabolic crisis, potentially shifting energy metabolism toward alternative substrates such as ketones. Breath acetone, a measurable …
A Noncanonical Role Of T Follicular Helper Cells In Promoting Peripheral Tolerance By Supporting T Regulatory Cells, Shivangi Dave
A Noncanonical Role Of T Follicular Helper Cells In Promoting Peripheral Tolerance By Supporting T Regulatory Cells, Shivangi Dave
All ETDs from UAB
T follicular helper (Tfh) cells are a specialized subset of CD4+ T cells that sup-port germinal center (GC) B cells and promote antibody (Ab)-mediated immunity. There is growing recognition of the heterogeneity and functional diversity of Tfh cells, supported by accumulating evidence that highlights their context-specific roles across a range of disease settings. While their contribution to B cell responses is well-established, our data demonstrate that Tfh cells have a broader and more dynamic function. In this study, we uncover a novel function of Tfh cells in maintaining immune homeostasis by supporting T regulatory cell (Treg) responses under normal physiological …

Bayesian Survival Analysis For High-Dimensional Compositional Data, Zhenying Ding
All ETDs from UAB
Survival analysis integrating microbiome and clinical data offers powerful insights into human health. The microbiome influences immunity, inflammation, and cancer outcomes. Combining microbial profiles with clinical factors like tumor stage, treatment, and demographics enhances understanding of how host-microbe interactions affect survival. To analyze these complex datasets, advanced statistical methods, including Bayesian models, penalized Cox proportional hazards models, and machine learning techniques are employed. These approaches can uncover novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets, leading to personalized treatment strategies that optimize patient survival. However, challenges arise due to the compositionality, high-dimensionality, and phylogenetic relation between taxa in microbiome data. In this dissertation, …
The Role Of The Glycerol Metabolism Regulator Glpr On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa’S Physiology, Nicholas Jordan Evans
The Role Of The Glycerol Metabolism Regulator Glpr On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa’S Physiology, Nicholas Jordan Evans
All ETDs from UAB
Chronic infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with cystic fibrosis. P. aeruginosa persists in the CF lung through adaptations, including altering the expression of metabolic genes to acquire nutrients that are abundant in the CF airway. Glycerol in the airway is imported and metabolized by proteins encoded in the glp regulon, which is regulated in part by GlpR. The loss of GlpR was previously shown to increase biofilm development in a P. aeruginosa CF isolate compared to a wound isolate. In the first half of this work, we investigated the influence that …

All ETDs from UAB
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene which results in complications in organs such as the lung, pancreas, liver, and intestines. In the lung, defective CFTR results in thick, sticky mucus that causes susceptibility to colonization of opportunistic pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), progressive lung damage, and ultimately a decrease in life expectancy in affected individuals depending on severity of disease. Additionally, one of the characteristics of this disease, with and without PA infection, is chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation has also been associated with accelerated aging …

Freezing of gait (FOG) affects anywhere from 20-80% of those with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) with the prevalence increasing with disease severity and length. This detrimental symptom is unpredictable and poorly characterized, which adds to the negative experience of FOG as it is difficult to treat. Using resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI), we set out to determine the functional changes in those with PD-FOG and map onto regions of the brain where signal power, measured using fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), synchronicity, as measured by regional homogeneity (ReHo), and strength and direction of intra-network connections as measured by static effective connectivity, are …

Bayesian Mediation Analyses For Zero-Inflated Data, Jinhong Cui
All ETDs from UAB
Mediation analysis is a fundamental tool in causal inference, enabling researchers to disentangle the pathways through which an exposure affects an outcome via intermediate variables (mediators). It has been widely applied in social sciences, psychology, and healthcare-related studies. Traditionally, mediation analysis has been conducted within the linear structural equation modeling (LSEM) framework. However, recent advances have shifted attention toward the counterfactual framework due to its flexibility in defining causal effects and its capacity to accommodate non-linear relationships, parametric and non-parametric models. Building on this foundation, methodological developments in mediation analysis have expanded to address more complex data structures, such as …
