Understanding laser-induced dynamics on metal surfaces poses significant challenges due to the intricate interplay between electronic and phononic degrees of freedom, which evolve on distinct timescales. In this study, we introduce a machine learning-accelerated approach to molecular dynamics simulations that incorporates anisotropic electronic friction, providing deeper insights into these complex processes. Our framework extends the accessible time and length scales for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations, enabling a detailed investigation of the laser-induced activation of oxygen on the Ru(0001) surface. Statistical analysis reveals that strong electronic excitation dominates the first 800 fs after laser exposure. Beyond this timescale, energy deposited by electronic …

Integrating Ai And Generative Ai Across The Curriculum: A Look At Three Subject Areas, Angie Su, Victoria Brenes, Stephanie L. Nelson
FDLA Journal
This paper examines how artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) models, such as ChatGPT and other GenAI tools, can be effectively integrated into mathematics, computer science, and English classrooms. Students must understand foundational AI concepts and how these technologies function to facilitate meaningful engagement with AI and GenAI. This paper provides practical strategies for math educators to introduce AI algorithms in a way that connects with students' existing knowledge and real-life experiences. Furthermore, it examines how GenAI can enhance learning, supporting students at each stage of coding, reading, and writing. The ethical considerations of GenAI usage, including potential overuse …

Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives Regarding Children’S Aggressive Behavior And In-School Suspension, Martha Baker
Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives Regarding Children’S Aggressive Behavior And In-School Suspension, Martha Baker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Aggressive behavior can lead preschool students to be suspended in and out of school. The problem in this study was the high rate of in-school suspension (ISS) among preschool students in response to child aggressive behavior. Informed by Harvey’s domain model of social reasoning and social information processing, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore perspectives of preschool teachers working in childcare centers in one city in Texas regarding children’s aggressive behavior that may lead to ISS as a response to that behavior. Four research questions probed how preschool teachers describe the level of choice exercised by …

Many western scientific disciplines adopted Indigenous Knowledge and terminology without deference to or understanding of the original meanings and values attached to Indigenous terms and concepts. This form of scientific appropriation has become a serious barrier to efforts of decolonizing Arctic research. The notion of Alaas is an example of such appropriation by the western science-based system of Indigenous knowledge about human–nature relations. This paper aims to discuss the term Alaas as it is conceptualized in both western science and Indigenous knowledge. The paper will explore the development of “alas” as an international permafrost science term and Alaas as an …
Uncalibrated Visual Servoing For Spatial Under-Constrained Cable-Driven Parallel Robots, Jarrett-Scott K. Jenny, Matt Marshall
Uncalibrated Visual Servoing For Spatial Under-Constrained Cable-Driven Parallel Robots, Jarrett-Scott K. Jenny, Matt Marshall
Faculty Articles
Cable-driven parallel robots (CDPRs) offer large workspaces with minimal infrastructure, but their control becomes difficult when the platform is under-constrained and sensing is limited. This paper investigates uncalibrated visual servoing (UVS) with a single monocular camera, asking whether simple global static Jacobians (GSJ) can be sufficient and how an adaptive Jacobian estimator behaves. Two platforms are evaluated: a three-cable (3C) platform and a redundant six-cable du-al-plane platform (RC). Motion-capture (MoCap) validation shows that redundancy improves stability and tracking by reducing platform tilt and making image errors correspond more directly to Cartesian motions. Across static and low-speed tracking tasks, GSJ proved …
Illegal Corporate Cultures, Elise Bernlohr Maizel
Illegal Corporate Cultures, Elise Bernlohr Maizel
Duke Law Journal
Culture is a powerful force in corporate compliance. Corporate culture shapes how employees behave, dictating whether, when, and how they follow the law. Cases arising out of cultural failures often involve public harm—plane crashes, poisoned rivers, tainted cancer drugs, and collapsed mines. Before these awful outcomes, however, the corporations that caused these harms fostered cultures that permitted the disregard of legal commands and public commitments. Managers disparaged safety regulations. Messages about profits and production drowned out messages about compliance and safety. Yet, there is a gap between all we know about the power of culture and our understanding of corporate …
Burdens Of Proof In Criminal Procedure, Eve Brensike Primus
Burdens Of Proof In Criminal Procedure, Eve Brensike Primus
Duke Law Journal
The Supreme Court's haphazard approach to allocating burdens of proof in criminal procedure has created a system in which constitutional rights can be rendered meaningless simply because defendants are required to prove things they cannot possibly know. Even though allocations of the burden of proof often drive litigation outcomes, the Court has failed to establish clear burden allocation structures for cases arising under the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments, leaving lower courts split about how to allocate the burdens. When the Supreme Court does allocate burdens, it often does so without explanation or consideration of key factors. Recent Supreme …

Introduction One in six stroke survivors continue to experience arm and language disability at 3 months post-stroke. This study aims to identify which model(s) of integrated UPper limb and Language Impairment and Functional Training (UPLIFT) show promise for people 3 months to 24 months post-stroke. We hypothesise that at least one promising UPLIFT model of rehabilitation will be identified. Methods and analysis This is an adaptive Phase IIa master protocol umbrella design that includes four simultaneous Bayesian Optimal Phase II studies to evaluate individual UPLIFT interventions against prespecified objective performance criteria. The intervention is upper limb and language training at …
Autonomous Artificial Intelligence In Armed Conflict: Toward A Model Of Strategic Integration, Ethical Authority, And Operational Constraint, Elise Annett, James Giordano
Autonomous Artificial Intelligence In Armed Conflict: Toward A Model Of Strategic Integration, Ethical Authority, And Operational Constraint, Elise Annett, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary explores how autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the nature of armed conflict and what it means for military strategy. AI-enabled systems, from autonomous sensors to decision aids, can improve situational awareness, speed decision cycles, and support complex operations. But the increasing autonomy of these systems also raises ethical, legal, and strategic questions, especially about accountability, control, and escalation risk. The article proposes a model for integrating autonomous AI into strategy that balances capability gains with ethical oversight and operational restraint. It concludes that responsible adoption of autonomous AI will require clear policy frameworks, robust governance, and multinational …

Common Enforcement Manual For Heritage Crime At Sea: None, Jason Lowther, Michael Williams, Beccy Austin
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This report summarises the results of a project to produce a Common Enforcement Manual (CEM) for Heritage Crime at Sea. The CEM provides easy access to the substance of the regulatory framework in England and bespoke operational protocol for observation, investigation, and interdiction (if permissible) and communication with relevant organisations. This will enable improved interagency collaboration to enhance the protection of underwater cultural heritage at a marginal cost, thereby generating sustainable added value for government in protecting a valuable and threatened national resource.

In this nonpayment case, the court granted a tenant's motion for partial summary judgment on a harassment counterclaim. The judge found that the landlord's repeated failure to correct hazardous violations created a **rebuttable presumption of harassment** under NYC Admin. Code § 27-2004. Since the landlord failed to rebut this presumption, the court awarded the tenant **statutory damages** of $1,000, and imposed a civil penalty of $2,000 payable to HPD. The court also issued a Class "C" harassment violation against the landlord, but the case remains pending for a final determination on the remaining claims.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common nerve entrapment disorder that affects millions, particularly older adults and women. It causes numbness, tingling, and discomfort in the hand, primarily affecting the median nerve. Risk factors include occupation (e.g., jobs involving repetitive motion or vibrating tools) and conditions such as obesity, pregnancy, and diabetes. Accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment, with nerve conduction studies (NCS) and ultrasound (US) being two key diagnostic methods. Each approach has strengths, limitations, and diagnostic utility, necessitating a comparison to determine the best use case for each tool. This comprehensive systematic review aims to compare the …

Enhancing Clinical Named Entity Recognition Via Fine-Tuned Bert And Dictionary-Infused Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Soumya Challaru Sreenivas, Saqib Chowdhury, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Clinical notes often contain unstructured text filled with abbreviations, non-standard terminology, and inconsistent phrasing, which pose significant challenges for automated medical information extraction. Named Entity Recognition (NER) plays a crucial role in structuring this data by identifying and categorizing key clinical entities such as symptoms, medications, and diagnoses. However, traditional and even transformer-based NER models often struggle with ambiguity and fail to produce clinically interpretable outputs. In this study, we present a hybrid two-stage framework that enhances medical NER by integrating a fine-tuned BERT model for initial entity extraction with a Dictionary-Infused Retrieval-Augmented Generation (DiRAG) module for terminology normalization. Our …

The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) integrates growth factor (GF) and nutrient signals to stimulate anabolic processes connected to cell growth and inhibit catabolic processes such as autophagy1,2. GF signalling through the tuberous sclerosis complex regulates the lysosomally localized small GTPase RAS homologue enriched in brain (RHEB)3. Direct binding of RHEB-GTP to the mTOR kinase subunit of mTORC1 allosterically activates the kinase by inducing a large-scale conformational change4. Here we reconstituted mTORC1 activation on membranes by RHEB, RAGs and Ragulator. Cryo-electron microscopy showed that RAPTOR and mTOR interact directly with the membrane. Full engagement of the membrane anchors …
