The History Behind The Enactment Of Public Law 115-126 And Whether Safesport Has Created A Safe Place For Competitive Athletes, Ashtyn L. Stevens
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The Summer Olympic Games unite the world in celebrating athletic excellence, yet behind the global spectacle lies a troubling reality: the pervasive issue of sexual abuse within competitive sports. The high-profile case of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually assaulted hundreds of athletes over decades, including Olympic champions Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas, exposed systemic failures in reporting and accountability. This comment analyzes the legal and institutional response to such abuse, focusing on the enactment of Public Law 115-126 in 2018. Designed to protect minors and amateur athletes, the law mandates timely reporting of sexual abuse to law …
Tinkering With The Machinery Of Death: Execution Through Nitrogen Hypoxia, Emiliano Villarreal
Tinkering With The Machinery Of Death: Execution Through Nitrogen Hypoxia, Emiliano Villarreal
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The modern era of the death penalty in the United States began in 1976 when the Supreme Court reinstituted the death penalty just four years after having found it to be unconstitutional. Since then, various states, as well as the federal government, have experimented with different methods of execution to find the most “humane” way of carrying out an execution. In 2018, Alabama legalized the use of nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution, and in 2024, became the first state to execute a person with this new, previously untested method. However, the use of nitrogen hypoxia has been the …

Beyond Racial Categorization In Sports Cardiology: A Systematic Review Of Cardiac Adaptations In Athletes, Douglas Corsi, Rafael Hernandez, Jasmine Yimeng Bao, Stephen Garrova, David Shipon
Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
Background/Objectives: Race-based cardiac screening criteria in sports cardiology, including the “Black athlete’s heart” concept, assume biological distinctions that may not reflect physiological reality. This systematic review evaluates whether geographic ancestry provides more clinically relevant predictors of cardiac adaptation than racial categorization. Methods: PubMed was searched (January 2005–July 2025) for studies examining cardiac adaptations in athletes by ethnicity. Data extraction captured demographics, geographic origin, cardiac assessments, and outcomes. Narrative synthesis was employed due to methodological heterogeneity. Results: Forty-seven studies (n = 66,130) revealed substantial within-race heterogeneity. The “Black athlete repolarization variant” prevalence ranged from 1.8% (Brazilian) to 30% (Ghanaian) Black athletes. …

Purpose: Retrospective chart reviews in ophthalmology are essential for gaining clinical insights, but they remain labor-intensive and prone to error. Despite digitization through electronic health records, extracting and interpreting lengthy, unstructured patient histories remains challenging, particularly in ophthalmology, which relies heavily on both imaging and text-based reports. We introduce OphthoACR, a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool for automated chart review and cohort analyses in ophthalmology. Methods: OphthoACR was applied to extract 16 variables of increasing task difficulty from the complete chart histories of 91 patients who underwent secondary intraocular lens surgery at the Columbia University …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace bullying is a serious issue that can lead to high employee turnover and significant revenue loss. To maintain a healthy work environment and support their employees, business leaders need to develop and implement effective strategies to prevent bullying. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to identify and explore the successful strategies that U.S. business leaders used to prevent workplace bullying. Six business leaders who have successfully implemented strategies to combat workplace bullying were purposively recruited and interviewed using semistructured interviews. The reflexive six-step thematic analysis of the interview transcripts and …
Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness When Working With Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Ernest J. Fruge
Special Education Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness When Working With Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Ernest J. Fruge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study examined how special education teachers perceived their teaching effectiveness in supporting students identified with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The study addressed a gap in the literature by examining the factors that influence special educators’ sense of self-efficacy when working with this population. Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy served as the conceptual framework. A generic qualitative research design was employed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight participants from two central Texas school districts. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis guided the coding and interpretation process, supported by MAXQDA software. Analysis of the data revealed seven key …

Indigent Defense: How The Attorney Shortage Crisis Raises The Continued Need For Public Defense In Rural Areas Of The Lone Star State, Cody Jess Huffman
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Abstract: The Sixth Amendment provides numerous rights, one of the most important being the right to counsel. The right to an attorney is crucial because it attaches at adversarial hearings such as interrogations, arraignments, and other serious matters as an individual weaves throughout the obstacles of the criminal justice system. An important distinction in that right to counsel as the admonishments are delivered is that not only does an individual have the right to counsel, often meaning one can be retained, but if an individual cannot afford to hire a private attorney, one will be appointed to them. As times …

Purpose: Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common correlates of mental health problems in adolescence. However, research has yet to investigate whether IPV victimization is related to developmental changes in mental health, as well as the contributing role that TBI may play in conditioning this association. We address this gap by analyzing longitudinal data with well-validated measures of mental health from an ethnically diverse sample of adolescents.
Methods: Prospective data from the Dating it Safe sample (n = 699) were used to measure IPV victimization, depression, post-traumatic stress, binge drinking, and TBI from 2015 to …
Misapplying Pinkerton And Accomplice Liability In The United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines: How Courts Have Wrongly Imprisoned Criminal Defendants For Decades, Jessica Huang
San Diego Law Review
The Pinkerton and accomplice-liability doctrines are two of the most maligned doctrines in criminal law. Anyone deemed an “accomplice” to a crime can be convicted of that crime as if they had perpetrated the wrongdoing themselves; similarly, Pinkerton liability, a form of conspiracy liability, permits the government to hold someone accountable for the substantive crimes of another so long as those crimes were “in furtherance of the conspiracy,” “within the scope of the unlawful project,” and reasonably foreseeable “as a necessary or natural consequence of the unlawful agreement.” Scholars, activists, and reformers have criticized the doctrines on both constitutional and …

The Implications Of Pulsifer V. United States For The Interpretation Of Criminal Statutes, Aparajita (Pj) Das
San Diego Law Review
All signs in Pulsifer point to considerable discretion for courts, all while operating within the confines of statutory text. For one, the opinion indicates that courts can override the text of a statute if the context so demands. The Court’s rejection of lenity also confirms this trend in two ways. It highlights the Court’s inconsistent approach when it comes to requiring the legislature to speak clearly. It also confirms that the threshold of ambiguity required to trigger lenity continues to be a high one, thus allowing judges to selectively apply the canon, even when a split in the Court demonstrates …

The ability to electrochemically separate individual species in a pyrochemical reprocessing salt relies on first being able to detect a separation in their reaction potentials. This requires the ability to measure reaction potentials with extreme precision. In this work, we introduce a novel technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) and demonstrate its effectiveness at precisely measuring metal deposition reaction potentials. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry, including its abilities to quantify the error of measured equilibrium potentials by averaging many individual OCP measurements, determine overpotential deposition nucleation potentials to instrument precision, and simultaneously determine the nucleation …

Endometriosis is a pathological condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial cells, leading to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Epidemiological studies have associated exposure to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, particularly PCB126, with an increased risk of endometriosis. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain poorly understood. We utilized a surgically induced endometriosis mouse model and human endometrial cell lines to assess the impact of PCB126 on endometriosis progression. Mice were exposed to environmentally relevant doses of PCB126. Endometriotic lesion growth, estrogen receptor signaling, receptor tyrosine kinase activity, and gene expression changes induced by PCB126-mediated elevation of DNA methyltransferase 3A …

Previous studies show that orphan nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) regulates endometriotic cell growth, survival, estrogen receptor β (ERβ), mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling and fibrosis. NR4A2 is also expressed in epithelial and stromal derived endometriotic cells, and in this study the effects of 1,1-bis(3'-indolyl)-(3,5-disubstitutedphenyl)methane (DIM-3,5) dual NR4A1/nuclear receptor 4A2 (NR4A2) ligands and knockdown of NR4A1 and NR4A2 were investigated. The dual NR4A1/2 DIM-3,5 analogs inhibited previously identified proendometriotic pathways and gene products, and they also inhibited TWIST1 and multiple markers associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The results show that both NR4A1 and NR4A2 regulate the same pathways, including endometriotic cell …

The toxicological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their known bioaccumulation. However, time-resolved and longitudinal studies that examine in vivo bioaccumulation and clearance remain limited. Here we use Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopies to detect and track the presence of two PAHs: pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and one PAC: 5,12-naphthacenequinone, in murine organ tissues. Mice were exposed to a three-component mixture of these three chemicals, then their organs were collected at 24-, 48-, and 72- hours post-exposure. The accumulation of each of these chemicals in …

A Case Study On The Effectiveness Of Llms In Verification With Proof Assistants, Barış Bayazıt, Yao Li, Xujie Si
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Large language models (LLMs) can potentially help with verification using proof assistants by automating proofs. However, it is unclear how effective LLMs are in this task. In this paper, we perform a case study based on two mature Rocq projects: the hs-to-coq tool and Verdi. We evaluate the effectiveness of LLMs in generating proofs by both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Our study finds that: (1) external dependencies and context in the same source file can significantly help proof generation; (2) LLMs perform great on small proofs but can also generate large proofs; (3) LLMs perform differently on different verification projects; …

Cosmopolitan Spirits: Islam And The Experimental Cosmologies Of Egypt's Spiritualist Movement, 1947–1960, Arthur Shiwa Zárate
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This article considers the history of Egypt’s mid-twentieth-century Spiritualist movement through an examination of its periodical, a monthly Arabic magazine called Alam al-Ruh (The World of the Spirit) (1947–1960). As it shows, Egyptian Spiritualists defended and promoted their project by crafting an experimental cosmology, one that blended claims about empirical verification with elements of Islamic and Spiritualist cosmologies. It further shows how this combination of scientism and cosmology reflects a core dynamic within the history of scientific exploration in the Islamic world. Like spiritual seekers and occult practitioners in Muslim societies elsewhere, Egyptian Spiritualists positioned their project as one of …

Motivation
Determining geographic origin of samples is a common objective in wildlife management, forensics, and conservation. Current methods often assume evolutionary models or require extensive reference datasets, which are costly and difficult to develop, that perform poorly with uneven or biased sampling. Supervised deep learning offers a promising alternative by learning complex patterns without prior model specifications. Combined with novel geo-genetic data augmentation and preprocessing techniques, it can reduce reference panel demands and improve performance across diverse sampling schemes, broadening accurate provenance determination to more study systems.
