Analyzing The Pisa Tests Results (2018) In Terms Of The Revised Bloom’S Taxonomy For The Spanish Reading-Comprehension Area Of Dominican Students., Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr., Fransheska Arias Reyes Lic.
FDLA Journal
This work aims to analyze the Results of the PISA Tests for the year 2018 in the Dominican Republic as subministered every three year by the OECD presided over by Dr. Andreas Schleicher, and that it is long awaited both for the Ministry of Education-MINERD-, and as well as for the non-governmental society and the opposition parties, among others. This scenario which is not exclusively of our country puts on the table many questioning as that of, if the country shall continue as part of that program on the light that such testings have been hardly criticized in more developed …

Language Immersion Programs For Dominican College Students/From The Russian Experience To The Mescyt Experience, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr.
FDLA Journal
The following work consists of a comparative research of two of the most outstanding immersion programs for foreign languages (Russian/English) that Dominican college students have ever undergone. The first one, happened decades ago in the cold distant Union of Soviet Socialist Republic where thousands of our students were sent as scholarship’s recipient to study in different Russian universities, after being selected by the Dominican Communist Party, and sponsored by the Soviet Government. The second one, is still happening in our country with the offering of the so-called English Immersion Program sponsored since 2005 by the Ministry of Higher Education-MESCyT- The …

Of Standardized Student Measurements And Tests In The Dominican Republic, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr., Fransheska Arias Reyes Lic.
FDLA Journal
The present work seeks to establish a comparison between two different and distant evaluation tools applied to the Dominican student population in order to measure the efficiency of our educational system in the recent years, one of them measured the quality of Dominican education in three areas (the PISA Test), whereas the other tested the quality of the proficiency of the English language (EF English Proficiency Index), both for the pre-college levels. Although one of our cherished ideas was our having analyzed such tests of extreme relevance for us, the EFL Teachers and Professors at many different levels, as the …

Personality Features And Efl Learning Process Within The Dominican Society Context, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr.
FDLA Journal
Through this work we are focusing on discussing the relationship between the Traits of Personality and the performance of Students in EFL Learning (introversion/extroversion and other determining factors of the educational Process) within the Dominican´s Society context as largely perceived by Teachers of English as a Foreign Language. There have been a great number of international studies already published which had tried to explain the effects of such features of the student's personality, mostly introversion/ extroversion on the student‘s performance in foreign language learning, something , which from the teacher‘s perception have always been presumed as an unquestionable fact. Although …

Efl Programs For People With Special Needs In The In Different National Settings, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr.
FDLA Journal
The present work attracted our attention motivated by the need of seeking ways of helping people learning EFL, with certain disabilities than undertaking a research project by itself. The needs for implementing those special program in our country is out of the question, since to the extent that our society and country has been developing in economic, social and political terms, to that extent we have realized the need to become a more inclusive society, more open to sectors with special needs, not only in terms of urban planning, but also in the design of their own educational policies towards …
A Modular Pipeline For Flatbed Content Detection And Localization With Accurate Deskew, Hp Inc
A Modular Pipeline For Flatbed Content Detection And Localization With Accurate Deskew, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
We present an end-to-end pipeline for localizing and deskewing one or multiple foreground objects (documents, photos, cards, receipts) placed on a flatbed scanner with a white to near-white background. The method integrates iterative morphological contrast shaping (white / black top-hats), gamma-driven diffusion, statistical region merging (SRM), distance-transform based consolidation, and Voronoi-like label propagation. A unified skew estimation interface produces deskewed, refined crops per object. This document mirrors the structural flow of a companion skew orientation disclosure while remaining self-contained and focused on the flatbed multi-object extension.

Probabilistic Identity Filter For Offline, Privacy-Preserving, Contact-Based Nearby Device Discovery, Dave Mccloskey, Darren Krahn, Joon Young Seo, Kevin Yeo
Defensive Publications Series
A core component of offline, private, contact-based discovery is requiring the two devices to perform a cryptographic protocol known as private set intersection (PSI) between a list of identifiers stored at a first device and the address book of known contacts stored at a second device. However, PSI is computationally expensive. This disclosure describes a probabilistic identity filter for devices. A device can encode a set of identities using this filter that enables other devices to check if their identity belongs in this filter with no false negatives and only small false positive probabilities, while ensuring that other devices cannot …

Anticipating The Unexpected: Preservice Teachers Learn Through An Unbalanced Scale Task, Christine J. Picot, Josip Slisko
Transformations
This article examines how an unbalance scale task prompted seven preservice teachers (PSTs) to confront and revise their assumptions about student thinking. Tasked with predicting how early elementary students (K-2) might make an unbalanced scale equal, teacher candidates largely anticipated additive or subtractive solutions and less frequently redistributive solutions. However, several students proposed creative strategies including one who removed all the cubes creating an equal 0 = 0 scenario. This moment sparked deep reflection and a broader reconsideration of what it means to anticipate diverse students reasoning. We discuss implications for teacher preparation and curriculum design that supports flexible relational …

Facilitating Trauma Informed Practices In Intermediate Algebra, Ruthmae Sears, Kelley Cummings, Sandra Vernon-Jackson, Keisha Albritton, Alfredo Rodriguez-Vera, Chuqian Song
Transformations
As a programmatic evaluation effort, we examined the extent to which Intermediate Algebra instructors promoted trauma-informed practices. Data were garnered from 230 students enrolled in Intermediate Algebra in Fall 2024 via a Trauma Informed Practices Survey and a survey about the impact of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. The quantitative data was analyzed using frequencies, and the qualitative data were analyzed using open coding and thematic analysis. The results suggest that students generally perceive their instructors exhibited trauma-informed care. The results have implications for providing adequate support and resources to ensure all students learn mathematics.

Staff Education On Oral Health To Night Shift Staff, Uzoamaka Mbionwu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) remains the most common hospital-acquired infection in the United States, with nonventilated adult patients particularly at risk. This doctoral project focused on improving oral care practices among night shift nursing staff on a medical-surgical unit to reduce the risk of HAP. The practice gap identified was the inconsistent and inadequate delivery of oral hygiene during night shifts, primarily due to staff knowledge deficits, time constraints, and a lack of standardized procedures. The project was guided by the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model and addressed the following question: In adult patients on a medical-surgical unit, will staff education …

Educating Nurses On The Use Of The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Managing Work-Related Stress, Linda Alaekwe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals manage stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion through mindfulness practices. The practice problem addressed in this project was the lack of knowledge among healthcare providers about using MBSR to manage workplace stress effectively. The purpose of this staff educational project was to develop and deliver an MBSR module aimed at improving providers’ knowledge of its principles and applications. The practice-focused question was: Upon educating healthcare providers on MBSR techniques, is there an increase in providers’ knowledge on MBSR as evidenced by pre- and postsurvey findings? I used the analysis, …

Community, Autonomy, Irony: Lessons From Historic Rosenwald Schools, Ronald B. Matus
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Growing evidence suggests the Rosenwald schools of the American South, which anchored thousands of Black communities for a half century before desegregation, boosted academic outcomes for generations of Black students and helped fuel the civil rights movement. The research literature, however, is thin on what specifically made these schools successful. My research attempts to narrow the gaps by asking the Rosenwald alums themselves. Through semi-structured interviews, 10 alums in Florida identify defining features of their schools, including seamless community connections; a culture of high expectations for academic achievement and character development; and especially caring and committed teachers. The alums’ insights …

Ai-Assisted Spectral Fingerprinting Of Mg-Doped Zno Tracer Phosphors: Tuning Photoluminescence Emission And Investigating Lifetime Via Sol-Gel Synthesis Parameters, Thomas M. Brandte
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Plastic sorting remains a major driver of recycling costs, and existing infrared (IR) optical identification systems cannot determine material prominence or quality, nor reliably identify dark polymers [1]. This work explores a PVA-stabilized sol–gel and thermal synthesis route for magnesium-doped zinc oxide (Mg:ZnO) as a tunable photoluminescent tracer phosphor.
Lattice-defect control forms the foundation of phosphorescent emission tuning, enabling unique spectral fingerprints to be generated based on synthesis parameters—Mg molar ratio (Mg%), PVA mass (g), and calcination temperature (°C). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra (400–850 nm) were analyzed using Gaussian peak fitting and principal component analysis (PCA), reducing hundreds of spectral features …

“The Best Laid Plans”: Evaluating How Housing Expectations Impact Prison Reentry, Vittoria A. Gonzalez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study assesses the expectations of housing stability pre-release and evaluates how closely these expectations align with actual housing outcomes. Additionally, this study examines how the alignment between pre-release housing expectations influences recidivism. The aim is to understand how individuals’ perceptions of their housing plans prior to release affect their reentry experiences and to offer insights that may inform policy and program design. Using data collected pre- and post- release within a prison reentry program from 115 individuals, results indicate that higher overall housing concern is associated with slightly higher odds of recidivism, and mismatches between expected and actualized housing …

Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations
Medetomidine, a potent central acting α2 agonist, has emerged as a fentanyl adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply. Its use has been linked to a novel withdrawal syndrome that is often resistant to conventional treatment protocols. Four cases are presented exemplifying extreme, but increasingly common forms of this withdrawal syndrome. A literature review is provided demonstrating both the paucity of available literature as well as potential avenues for treatment and future research. As adulterants continue to proliferate in the illicit drug supply, clinicians should anticipate atypical withdrawal phenotypes and consider early intervention.

Sensitive Cloud Point Extraction Method For Determination Of Salbutamol Sulfate In Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms, Ghadah Fadhil
Baghdad Science Journal
The cloud point extraction (CPE) methodology was utilized to produce a simple, highly sensitive, and environmentally friendly method for preconcentrating and evaluating salbutamol sulfate (SAL) in pharmaceutical dosage forms. Triton X-114 was used as a surfactant to recover the product result from the diazotization coupling between SAL and diazotized 2, 4-dichloroaniline (DCA) by the cloud point extraction process. The product was extracted with non-ionic surfactant micelles and then spectrophotometrically detected at a wavelength of 445 nm. Under ideal conditions, the calibration curve’s linearity (r = 0.9947) ranged from 0.1 to 5.0 μg. mL–1 of SAL. The results showed …
