I, Me, And My-Opia, Michael Saba
I, Me, And My-Opia, Michael Saba
Journal of the Macomb Dental Society
Personal experiences often serve as catalysts for broader insights into human behavior and perspective. This narrative explores the metaphor of myopia—both clinical and figurative—as a lens through which to examine selfishness, shortsightedness, and the pursuit of instant gratification. An eye examination revealed not only a physical diagnosis of nearsightedness but also prompted recognition of a narrowed, self-centered outlook that contributed to stress and disconnection in personal and professional life. Drawing parallels between optical myopia and psychological or behavioral myopia, the reflection highlights how short-term focus can undermine long-term fulfillment and even foster destructive patterns such as addiction. The discussion emphasizes …

Gut Bacterial Dysbiosis In Pediatric Severe Malaria Associates With Post-Discharge Mortality, Olivia Bednarski, Sawyer Lehman, David Mzinza, Caroline Kazinga, Ruth Namazzi, Robert Opoka, Jie Ren, Tuan Tran, Terrie Taylor, Karl Seydel
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Gut microbiota have been implicated in severe malaria in murine models, but their contribution to the pathogenesis of severe malaria in children is unknown. Here we show through analysis of gut bacteria in stool samples from two separate African studies enrolling children with severe malaria, and children from local communities, that children with severe malaria have gut bacteria dysbiosis. Among children with severe malaria, there is increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae that associates with multiple clinical complications of severe malaria. Moreover, increased abundance of Escherichia coli was a predictor of post-discharge mortality. Metagenome analysis identify elevated metabolic pathways and genes supporting …

Energy-Harvesting Concurrent Lora Mesh With Timing Offsets For Underground Mine Emergency Communications, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Underground mine emergencies destroy communication infrastructure when situational awareness is most critical. Current systems rely on centralized network infrastructure, which fails during emergencies when miners are trapped and require rescue coordination. This paper proposes an energy-harvesting LoRa mesh network that addresses self-powered operation, interference management, and adaptive physical layer optimization under severe underground propagation conditions. A dual-antenna architecture separates RF energy harvesting (860 MHz) from LoRa communication (915 MHz), enabling continuous operation with supercapacitor storage. The core contribution is a decentralized scheduler that derives optimal timing offsets by modeling concurrent transmissions as a Poisson collision process, exploiting LoRa's capture effect …

In this case, a 67-year-old male experienced a progression of his Parkinson’s disease symptoms following an inpatient hospitalization for pneumonia. He presents to the neurology clinic for follow-up, where the neurology ambulatory care pharmacist was consulted to assist with his case. The pharmacist identified a medication reconciliation discrepancy that resulted in an unintentional change in the dosing frequency of his carbidopa/levodopa. This, combined with the initiation of metoclopramide, a dopamine-receptor antagonist, led to a worsening of his Parkinson’s symptoms. His carbidopa/levodopa dose was titrated back to the previous regimen, metoclopramide was discontinued, and his symptoms significantly improved. This case highlights …

Can Limited Partners Mitigate Negative Externalities In Private Equity?, Teodor Duevski, Chhavi Rastogi, Tianhao Yao
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
We show how Limited Partners' (LPs) environmental and social (E&S) concerns transmit to private equity (PE) rms through capital supply. E&S incidents in portfolio companies reduce PE fundraising, as E&S-concerned relationship LPs refrain from recommitting and are not easily substituted. Using a legal reform that expands E&S-concerned public pension capital to PE, we causally show that PE rms internalise LPs' E&S concerns, reducing dirty sector portfolio allocation and increasing ESG hiring. Additionally, PE rms with E&S- concerned relationship LPs engage with portfolio companies to manage E&S risks. Limited capital substitutability enables LPs to delegate E&S preferences, shaping PE allocation and …

Bridgewater Review
Academic journals are at the heart of our system of communicating scholarly ideas and research results, and have been since at least the 1640s, but at no time has the genre undergone such challenge and change as in the past 25 years. In that span, the perennial quest among editors to stay relevant has been joined by successive waves of novel transition: a shift from print to online publishing, the push for an open-access model of consumption, the growth of alternative, non-journal communication networks (from listservs to weblogs, podcasts, and more), and now, the uncertainty of generative AI. To face …

Electrical Engineering
Hydrogen production through water electrolysis is a promising method for storing renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the efficiency and stability of hydrogen production electrodes remain challenging issues. In this study, we present a rationally designed α-Fe2O3/2H–MoS2 heterojunction that unlocks the electrocatalytic potential of the inert basal plane of the semiconducting 2H–MoS2 phase. The heterostructure, synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method, features α-Fe2O3 nanocubes anchored onto flowerlike 2H–MoS2 nanosheets. The electrochemical performance of the α-Fe2O3/2H–MoS2 heterojunction electrode was evaluated by linear sweep voltammetry, Tafel polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the α-Fe2O3/2H–MoS2 electrode exhibited lower …

Single-Fibril Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Imaging And Deep Learning Reveal Concentration Dependence Of Amyloid Β 42 Aggregation Pathways, Sara Sohail, J. Yoo, H. S. Chung
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
Amyloid fibril formation is a highly heterogeneous process as evidenced by polymorphism in fibril structure. It has been suggested that different polymorphs are associated with different diseases or disease subtypes. Detailed characterization of this heterogeneity is a key to understanding the aggregation mechanism and, possibly, the disease mechanism. In this work, we develop Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging of amyloid fibril formation in real time and investigate the concentration-dependent heterogeneous fibril formation of amyloid β 42 (Aβ42). We incubated a mixture of unlabeled and labeled (5% donor and 5% acceptor) Aβ42, followed aggregation, and characterized individual fibrils in terms …
Necessity In Free Exercise, Brady Earley
Necessity In Free Exercise, Brady Earley
University of Chicago Law Review
The Free Exercise Clause is a broadly worded constitutional prohibition against government intrusion on religious exercise. To construct limits, courts have consistently required government officials to demonstrate the necessity of state action burdening religion. Yet government officials regularly fail to produce evidence of necessity, leaving judges to intuit or assume whether necessity exists. This Comment offers a better way. Using a method known as difference-in-differences (DiD), lawmakers can draw upon the experience of existing state laws to enact laws justified with evidence. This Comment demonstrates the value of DiD with a current free exercise controversy involving the Old Order Amish …

Fisheries Research Reports
The smooth marron (Cherax cainii) (‘marron’) is endemic to freshwater dams and rivers of south-west Western Australia. Marron are managed as a single stock within the South-West Recreational Freshwater Resource and are highly vulnerable to over-exploitation due to the biological characteristics of the species (e.g., low fecundity, localised populations) as well as environmental (e.g., habitat loss, reduction in rainfall) and human (e.g., fishing, land clearing) pressures on freshwater ecosystems.
Due to this vulnerability, this species has been the focus of research, monitoring and management since the 1970’s. Since 2000, annual phone-recall (2000 – 2021) and online-recall (2022 – 2025) surveys …

Direct-In-Nod Genetic Ablation Of Bcl3 Leads To Complete Type 1 Diabetes Protection., Jeremy Racine, Jennifer R Dwyer, Harold D Chapman, Amy Bell, Raymond F. Robledo, David V. Serreze
Faculty Research 2025
It was previously reported that genetic ablation of the NF-κB atypical inhibitor Bcl3 through congenic introduction of a 129P2-embryo derived knockout allele (Bcl3tm1Ver) accelerated autoimmune diabetes in the NOD mouse model. Conversely, we found that direct CRISPR-mediated ablation of this gene in the NOD/ShiLtDvs substrain completely inhibited diabetes development. Our CRISPR approach excised exons 3-7 within the NOD Bcl3 gene. These new NOD-Bcl3-/- mice had very low levels of insulitis, indicating protective mechanisms elicited early in the disease process. Dissimilar to reports of Bcl3 ablation in nonautoimmune C57BL/6-background mice, we found that splenic and lymph node B cells were not …

Faculty Research 2025
INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that the brain undergoes anatomical and functional restructuring, resulting in neurometabolic and vascular dysregulation (MVD) prior to amyloid beta accumulation, which begins at an early age and leads to the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHODS: Using a retrospective clinical population (n = 403) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, cerebral perfusion and metabolism changes across 59 brain regions were evaluated from clinical studies. Results were verified by transcriptomic signatures and clinical cognitive assessments.
RESULTS: Our findings suggest that disease progression follows a stage-dependent MVD pattern that can identify at-risk regions. Although each region progresses at …

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used medicine for diverse applications including differential diagnostic support. The training data used to create LLMs such as the Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) predominantly consist of English-language texts, but LLMs could be used across the globe to support diagnostics if language barriers could be overcome. Initial pilot studies on the utility of LLMs for differential diagnosis in languages other than English have shown promise, but a large-scale assessment on the relative performance of these models in a variety of European and non-European languages on a comprehensive corpus of challenging rare-disease cases is lacking. …
Analysis And Simulation Of The Effect Of Voids In Dually Reinforced Particle And Short Fiber Composites, Matthew Mckinley Luci
Analysis And Simulation Of The Effect Of Voids In Dually Reinforced Particle And Short Fiber Composites, Matthew Mckinley Luci
Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering
This thesis investigates dual-reinforced polymer composites tailored for flywheel energy storage, combining short, chopped carbon fibers for load bearing with iron particulates for multifunctionality. A unified experimental–computational workflow was developed: tensile coupons were fabricated and tested, machine compliance was quantified using neat resin and removed from all curves, and elastic moduli were extracted with robust MATLAB routines. Parallel finite-element models in ANSYS 2023R reproduced the dog-bone geometry with standardized meshing, named selections, and displacement-controlled loading. Four material states—neat resin, resin and iron, resin and short carbon fiber, and the iron and fiber hybrid— were evaluated. Results show carbon fibers dominate …

Isabel Rico was serving a term of supervised release when she absconded from federal supervision. Years later, the government sought to revoke her release, arguing that her fugitive status “tolled” her supervised-release term. The Ninth Circuit agreed. Other circuits, however, have rejected the fugitive-tolling doctrine in the supervised-release context. The Supreme Court will now decide whether federal courts may judicially adopt fugitive tolling, or whether Congress’s silence in the supervised-release statute forecloses it.

Resource Assessment Report No.6: Western Rock Lobster Resource - 2025 Update Assessment, Simon De Lestang, Emma-Jade Tuffley
Resource Assessment Reports
Executive Summary
The western rock lobster (WRL) fishery is considered sustainable with catches being slightly below those associated with the maximum economic yield (MEY) proxy (39% harvest rate), which ensures the large lobster biomass and economical catch rates are maintained. The marine environment continues to be the biggest driver in stock dynamics with post larval recruitment (puerulus) and adult behaviour, including catchability, strongly influenced by oceanic conditions. Recent seasons have seen strong Leeuwin Currents and warm ocean conditions. Over the past few seasons, puerulus settlement levels have been below average at numerous locations and it has been almost 10 years …

As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes more integrated into corporate communication, its role in crisis messaging raises critical questions about audience perception and trust. Drawing on theories of machine heuristics, this study explores how relational cues in AI-authored crisis apologies shape emotional and cognitive responses that ultimately influence trust and forgiveness. A 3 (authorship attribution: AI vs. human vs. control) x 2 (relational tone: warmth vs. competence) between-subjects factorial design with 464 participants was conducted to assess if and how incorporating a warm tone into AI-generated apologies can help overcome AI's inherent limitations associated with machine heuristics. Results show that …

Composition Pedagogy As Ai‑Native Coding: From Design Kit To Scholarly Framework, Daniel Plate, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This article advances a field-ready framework that reconceives first-year composition as AI-native coding, translating a complete “design kit” into scholarly method, evaluative protocol, and curriculum architecture. Background: Contemporary composition pedagogy emphasizes process, genre awareness, and collaborative revision; meanwhile, modern software practice operationalizes iteration through version control, test-driven development, and continuous integration. The uploaded kit demonstrates that these cultures are isomorphic: writing stages align with SDLC phases, and automated pipelines can lint prose, execute argument “tests,” and publish artifacts with auditable histories. Approach: The study systematizes that kit into (1) a conceptual map that recasts authorship as orchestration and verification, (2) …

Kru ppel-like factor 1 [KLF1; also known as erythroid Kru ppel-like factor (EKLF)] is a C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor that plays a crucial role in all aspects of erythropoiesis. Mutations in KLF1 lead to diverse phenotypes ranging from mild to severe anemias. Individuals with a (CDA) type IV] exhibit impaired erythroid terminal differentiation and increased presence of binucleate erythroblasts. We have previously shown that KLF1 is necessary for cell cycle exit and enucleation in mouse primary cells. In the present study, we discovered that genes involved in cell motility, cell division and mitotic pathways are all directly regulated by …

Highlights: What are the main findings? Prenatal cocaine exposure increases the risk of ADHD in preadolescence, with effects largely mediated through attention problems and impulsivity at 4–5 years of age. Male sex is an independent risk factor with a direct path to the ADHD diagnosis. What is the implication of the main finding? Screening for behavioral problems before 4 years of age in prenatal cocaine exposure would make possible early intervention to mitigate later diagnosis or severity of ADHD. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral problem in children. Multiple risk factors, including prenatal substance exposure, have been associated …

Don't Let An Empire Create An Emperor: The Conundrum Of Presidential War Powers, Samuel Pritchard
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
For over eighty years, a constitutional battle has been waged over the President’s power to use military force without congressional approval. The Constitution separated the power to declare war and execute the conflict between Congress and the President. But presidents continue to assert inherent authority to initiate limited armed conflicts. This debate over presidential war powers represents a pervasive tension in the United States. On the one hand, the United States is a constitutional republic seeking to preserve democratic governance through separation of powers and electoral accountability. On the other hand, the United States is a global hegemon that needs …
