Childhood trauma is a risk factor for bipolar disorder, but the biological mechanisms of this association remain incompletely defined. Gray matter differences observed after trauma exposure overlap with those reported in bipolar disorder, suggesting that the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder might be mediated through brain morphology.

Our goal was to determine whether cortical thickness, cortical surface or subcortical volume mediate the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder. We leveraged a large multi-site dataset from the ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group, comprising of 1,031 participants with bipolar disorder and 2,221 controls from 19 international cohorts. To identify …

Molecular Fluctuations Inhibit Intermittency In Compressible Turbulence, Ishan Srivastava, Andrew Nonaka, Weiqun Zhang, Alejandro Luis Garcia, John B. Bell Nov 2025

Molecular Fluctuations Inhibit Intermittency In Compressible Turbulence, Ishan Srivastava, Andrew Nonaka, Weiqun Zhang, Alejandro Luis Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the standard picture of fully developed turbulence, highly intermittent hydrodynamic fields are nonlinearly coupled across scales, where local energy cascades from large scales into dissipative vortices and large density gradients. Microscopically, however, constituent fluid molecules are in constant thermal (Brownian) motion, but the role of molecular fluctuations in large-scale turbulence is largely unknown, and with rare exceptions, it has historically been considered irrelevant at scales larger than the molecular mean free path. Recent theoretical and computational investigations have shown that molecular fluctuations can impact energy cascade at Kolmogorov length scales. Here, we show that molecular fluctuations not only modify …

Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache Nov 2025

Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coral reef ecosystems are declining globally from numerous stressors, including localized pollution, disease, and marine heatwaves induced by climate change. To preserve these ecosystems, it is critical to identify corals that can withstand stressors—primarily future marine heatwaves—and prioritize them for coral restoration efforts until these stressors are mitigated. Coral responses to thermal stress can be influenced by several partners, including mutualistic microalgae and a vast prokaryotic community. Here, I use advanced molecular techniques to examine which partners (coral host, algal symbiont, and microbial communities) are associated with coral health, how they contribute to holobiont physiology, and their potential to increase …

A Generative Ai Teaching Assistant For Personalized Learning In Medical Education, Thomas Thesen, Soo Hwan Park

Dartmouth Scholarship

Medical education faces a scalability crisis, where rising class sizes strain individualized instruction, while students increasingly adopt unvalidated Generative AI (GenAI) tools for individualized learning support. This study investigated how medical students integrate constrained GenAI systems into their self-directed learning practices using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which limits large language model responses to instructor-curated materials, thereby reducing hallucinations while maintaining pedagogical utility. We deployed a RAG-based teaching assistant in a medical school basic science course across two consecutive cohorts, examining usage patterns, conversation content, and student feedback to understand adoption and learning behaviors. Students demonstrated strategic, context-dependent usage, with engagement intensifying …

Orthoflaviviruses are a genus of arthropod-transmitted RNA viruses that infect humans and other vertebrate animals on a global scale, resulting in extensive morbidity and mortality. Among the orthoflaviviruses, tick-borne encephalitis viruses (TBEV) are an antigenic group that causes severe neurological disease in humans. However, the entry receptors for TBEV, which contribute to cell and tissue tropism, remain largely unknown. Because recent studies identified members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family as possible receptors for some orthoflaviviruses and distantly related alphaviruses, we performed a targeted screen in transgenic cells expressing different LDLR members and identified LRP8 (also called ApoER2) as …

INTRODUCTION: Transitions of care (TOC) between hospital, ambulatory and home settings for high-risk adults with chronic diseases are complex, costly and often result in poor health outcomes. Suboptimal care transitions lead to medication errors, non-adherence, decreased self-management skills and inadequate follow-up, all of which contribute to readmissions or emergency department visits. The Transitional Care Model aims to address these challenges through patient-centred, in-home interventions. We propose to implement and evaluate TELE-TOC: Telehealth Education Leveraging Electronic Transitions Of Care for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. This study will evaluate the added value of a virtual, pharmacy-based intervention integrated into an …

Fraggin’ The Superhero Genre: Parody And Carnival In Dc’S Lobo, Ryan L. Johnson

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This essay examines the DC anti-hero Lobo as an ideal example of the constructive, creative power of parody and Bakhtinian carnival. Unlike Bakhtin’s assertion that carnival since the Renaissance has lost its spirit of play and become purely destructive, Lobo uses grotesque violence to create just as much as he destroys social norms. Ultimately, the mini-series under consideration provide a valuable tool for students to understand carnival, parody, and its power as criticism.

Electric-Field Tunable Magnetoexcitons In Xenes/Hbn/Tmdc, Xenes/Hbn/Bp, And Xenes/Hbn/Tmtc Heterostructures, Roman Ya. Kezerashvili, Anastasia Spiridonova, Klaus Ziegler

Publications and Research

In this work, we propose novel van der Waals heterostructures composed of Xenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), phosphor ene, and transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs), which are separated by insulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers. We theoreti cally investigate the behavior of Rydberg indirect excitons in Xenes/hBN/TMDC, Xenes/hBN/phosphorene and Xenes/hBN/TMTC heterostructures subjected to parallel external electric and magnetic fields that are oriented perpendicular to the layers. By incorporating both isotropic and anisotropic materials, we demonstrate that excitonic properties can be effectively tuned through the external field strengths and the heterostructure design. Our results show that the exciton reduced mass and the …

The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Cognitive Performance In African American Older Adults, Rio S. Tate

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The number of older adults in the United States is expected to increase in the years to come. As we age, cognitive performance is noted to decline. African American older adults are more likely than non-Hispanic Whites to experience cognitive impairment and dementia. It is known that physical activity is a modifiable risk factor for dementia. It is not known the extent to which physical activity engagement is related to cognitive performance in African American older adults, and which variables, if any, moderate this association. To answer this question, the authors examined the association between three intensities of physical activity …

Quality Improvement Project: Impact Of Educational Intervention On Post-Acute And Long-Term Care Staff's Confidence And Accuracy In Aims Screening For Tardive Dyskinesia, Tana Whitt

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a chronic, often irreversible movement disorder associated with prolonged antipsychotic use. In post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) settings, inconsistent Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) screening practices and limited clinician education contribute to under recognition and delayed treatment. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement (QI) project evaluated whether an educational intervention impacted clinicians’ knowledge, confidence, and perceived importance of AIMS screening among licensed and unlicensed PALTC staff. Guided by Donabedian’s Model of Quality and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, the project used a pre-test/post-test design to measure outcomes before and after completion of the Drug-Induced Movement …
