BACKGROUND: Facilitating placental transfusion-the transfer of blood from the placenta to the newborn-via delayed cord clamping (DCC) or umbilical cord milking (UCM) at birth has been shown to improve iron stores in healthy term infants and may positively impact long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Infants who are non-vigorous at birth and at risk of developing hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are particularly likely to benefit from placental transfusion. This process may offer neuroprotection by enhancing cardiopulmonary transition, supporting cardiac preload, improving systemic and cerebral perfusion, delivering stem cells and neurotrophic factors, and preventing iron deficiency. While DCC is not currently recommended for non-vigorous term …

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading global cause of mortality, with hypertension (HT) being a significant contributor, responsible for 56% of CVD-related deaths. Masked hypertension (MHT), a condition where patients exhibit normotensive blood pressure (BP) in clinical settings but elevated BP in out-of-clinic measurements, poses an elevated risk for cardiovascular complications and often goes undiagnosed. Current diagnostic methods, such as ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and home BP monitoring (HBPM), have limitations in feasibility and accessibility. Methods This study aimed to address these challenges by leveraging machine learning (ML) models to predict MHT based on clinical data from a single …

Conflicting Bases For Judging Action And Actors: The Role Of Individual Differences, Brittney Louramore Nov 2025

Conflicting Bases For Judging Action And Actors: The Role Of Individual Differences, Brittney Louramore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study examined how political orientation, locus of control, and action identification predict moral reasoning across six dilemmas contrasting consistency and compensation. Participants (N ≈ 245) completed measures of ideological beliefs, perceived control, and action construal. Reliability analyses indicated modest internal consistency for Action Identification (α = .53) and low reliability for Locus of Control (α = .32). The six moral scenarios showed very low reliability (α = .11), indicating they captured diverse judgment domains. Binary logistic regressions revealed that political orientation, particularly its social dimension—was the strongest and most context-dependent predictor of moral choice. Economic …

Unraveling Assumed Similarities: North Korean Defector Students’ Navigation Of Social Capital And Habitus In South Korean Education, Ini Kim, Younkyung Hong Nov 2025

Unraveling Assumed Similarities: North Korean Defector Students’ Navigation Of Social Capital And Habitus In South Korean Education, Ini Kim, Younkyung Hong

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This study examines North Korean defector students’ experiences navigating social and cultural norms and expectations within South Korea’s educational systems and institutions. North Korean defectors often strive to acquire and perform cultural capital and establish valid habitus in the new context, which can lead to feelings of alienation, exclusion, and discrimination. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital and habitus, we analyze how these norms and hierarchies are maintained and reproduced, particularly within the context of assumed cultural and linguistic homogeneity between North and South Korea. We employ critical discourse analysis (CDA), recognizing discourse as a social and socially influenced …

Trajectory Analysis Incorporating Non-Response Weights Via A Non-Parametric Feature-Based Approach And A Bayesian Finite Mixture Model Approach, Samia Sultana Nov 2025

Trajectory Analysis Incorporating Non-Response Weights Via A Non-Parametric Feature-Based Approach And A Bayesian Finite Mixture Model Approach, Samia Sultana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While conducting longitudinal population-based research, the most insight concerning a phenomenon can be achieved by analyzing the changing patterns of outcomes over time, rather than depending on overall measures that may mask significant within- and between-individual variation. Trajectory analyses address this need by grouping individuals into sub-populations with similar temporal patterns. In population surveys, dropout and wave non-response can distort estimated trajectories and their prevalence. Non-response weights, defined as the inverse probabilities of response, adjust the representation of under-represented individuals and mitigate the impact of over-represented ones, so restoring the population representativeness of the resultant patterns. Nonetheless, conventional trajectory analysis …

Development And Validation Of A Narrative-Based Personal Epistemology Scale: A Rasch-Guttman Scenario Approach, Luke Walden Nov 2025

Development And Validation Of A Narrative-Based Personal Epistemology Scale: A Rasch-Guttman Scenario Approach, Luke Walden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Quantitative measurement of personal epistemology has faced persistent challenges, with previous instruments often demonstrating poor psychometric functioning and instability across studies. This study introduces and provides an argument for the validity of the Epistemic Reasoning Measure (ERM), a novel scenario-based instrument utilizing the Rasch Guttman Scenario (RGS) methodology to assess absolutism and multiplism across a well-structured (biology) and an ill-structured (history) domain. A pilot sample of 350 undergraduate students and a second wave of 357 undergraduate students completed the four variants of the ERM (absolutism and multiplism for both biology and history). The psychometric properties of the scales were evaluated …

Evaluating Semantic Representations In Multimodal Word Grounding, Saima Shaukat, Amir Aly, Thomas Wennekers, Angelo Cangelosi Nov 2025

Evaluating Semantic Representations In Multimodal Word Grounding, Saima Shaukat, Amir Aly, Thomas Wennekers, Angelo Cangelosi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Word grounding tasks aim to associate individual words withcorresponding elements in visual scenes, enabling machines to link language with perception for effective human–machine interaction. However, existing grounding models struggle to generalize to synonyms or unseenlexical variants, limiting their performance in open-domain scenarios. Inthis paper, we present a Bayesian multimodal grounding model that incorporates word embeddings as priors within a probabilistic generativeprocess to improve robustness under lexical variation. We compare theeffects of static FastText and contextual BERT embeddings on grounding accuracy by conditioning word–visual associations on their semanticrepresentations. Experiments use CLEVR-generated 3D scenes pairedwith structured compositional descriptions to test the grounding of …

Water-Based Logic: The Water Heritage Of Greater Nanning And Its Role In Urban Authenticity, Tiansheng Li

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Water heritage plays a pivotal role in establishing Greater Nanning as a central city in the upper Pearl River basin of southern China. However, this heritage has largely been overlooked due to an urban narrative dominated by land-centrism. This article explores methods to create a comprehensive understanding of the water heritage of Greater Nanning and discusses how it can be integrated into the concept of urban authenticity. It argues that both tangible and intangible water heritages are essential elements to safeguard urban authenticity and promote sustainable cultural development. This study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, combining quantitative analysis with …

Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen Nov 2025

Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen

Theses

Effective communication of mechanical designs through technical drawings requires geometric accuracy, efficiency, and an understanding of human perception and cognition. Although advances in computer-aided design (CAD) software have improved drawing precision and automation, current tools often overlook the spatial reasoning processes that users employ to interpret these representations. This study seeks to improve the accuracy and efficiency of human-computer interaction in CAD environments by examining how individuals perceive and interpret three-dimensional mechanical components within the context of technical drawings. A key focus is the identification of canonical and optimal views that align with intuitive human understanding. Through a series of …

Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein primarily known for its alternative splicing activity. It shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm via partially overlapping N-terminal nuclear localization (NLS) and export (NES) signals. Despite its fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, its involvement in human disease remains poorly understood. We identified 27 individuals from 25 families harboring de novo or inherited pathogenic variants - predominantly start-loss (89%) and, to a lesser extent, missense (11%) - affecting NES/NLS motifs. Affected individuals presented with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder and variable skeletal dysplasia with disproportionate short stature with short limbs. …
