Copyright Protection Or Media Suppression? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Impact On News Media And Journalism, Alenis Olivera
Copyright Protection Or Media Suppression? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Impact On News Media And Journalism, Alenis Olivera
FIU Law Review
When copyright law collides with press freedom, which one survives the takedown? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was once hailed as a necessary adaptation to copyright protection issues in the digital age. But now, nearly three decades since its incorporation into the Copyright Act, the DMCA has continued to cast a shadow over the journalism industry. The DMCA’s notice-and-takedown system, originally designed to protect copyright owners by allowing for quick removal of infringing content, has become a mechanism that risks suppressing lawful reporting and undermines the First Amendment’s guarantee of a free press. This Comment will explore how the …
Private Equity In Healthcare: The Case For Stricter Regulations, Ryan Scivally
Private Equity In Healthcare: The Case For Stricter Regulations, Ryan Scivally
FIU Law Review
Private equity has become an increasingly influential force in American healthcare. Hundreds of billions of dollars have flown into healthcare acquisitions over the last decade, and a growing share of physician practices and health services are coming under investor control. This Comment argues that the current regulatory framework has not kept pace with that expansion. Existing federal tools, primarily antitrust and fraud enforcement, leave most transactions unreviewed because many deals fall below reporting thresholds. At the state level, doctrines such as the corporate practice of medicine are unevenly enforced and often avoided through management services’ organization structures. These structures preserve …
Owning Trading Opportunities, Kevin Douglas
Owning Trading Opportunities, Kevin Douglas
FIU Law Review
Owning Trading Opportunities identifies the doctrines and policy rationales used to protect property rights in corporate opportunities. It then explores adopting these doctrines and rationales to reform the notions of "fairness," "public interest," "investor protection," "market confidence," and "economic efficiency" driving the regulation of insider trading.
This approach yields several benefits. First, it shows that a policy commitment to equal trading opportunities for all investors is the functional equivalent of a commitment to fostering equal access to information for all investors. The U.S. Supreme Court attempted to reject the latter but failed by embracing the former.
Second, corporate opportunity cases …
Forum Selling As A Threat To The Rule Of Law, Brian Iverson
Forum Selling As A Threat To The Rule Of Law, Brian Iverson
FIU Law Review
Forum shopping has long been a feature of federal litigation, but recent years have brought a more troubling dynamic in which federal courts compete for cases by “forum selling.” Judges engage in forum selling by adopting plaintiff-friendly procedures, reliably issuing plaintiff-leaning decisions, and publicly soliciting certain types of cases. These practices transform localized procedural discretion into a structural risk for the federal judicial system.
This Article makes two novel contributions to the federal forum-selling literature. First, it expands the discussion beyond bankruptcy and patent practice to examine ideological influences. Drawing on empirical scholarship and illustrative judicial profiles, the Article identifies …

The purpose of this chapter is to propose a conceptual framework that unpacks AI use in instructional practice across three interrelated dimensions: human agency, cognitive demand, and AI orchestration. We ground this work in historical perspectives on technology's mediating role in education. We then propose the conceptual framework and three characterizations of the use of AI in school instruction: cognitive load reducer, cognitive capacity builder, and cognitive companion. We then illustrate a worked example of each, including a curricular example and sample student prompts, and conclude with questions that educators might ask themselves as they consider if and how to …
Optimal Quantization On Spherical Surfaces: Continuous And Discrete Models—A Beginner-Friendly Expository Study, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Optimal Quantization On Spherical Surfaces: Continuous And Discrete Models—A Beginner-Friendly Expository Study, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
This expository paper provides a unified and pedagogical introduction to optimal quantization for probability measures supported on spherical curves and discrete subsets ofthe sphere, emphasizing both continuous and discrete settings. We first present a detailedgeometric and analytical foundation for intrinsic quantization on the unit sphere, includingdefinitions of great and small circles, spherical triangles, geodesic distance, Slerp interpolation, the Fréchet mean, spherical Voronoi regions, centroid conditions, and quantizationdimensions. Building upon this framework, we develop explicit continuous and discretequantization models on spherical curves, namely great circles, small circles, and greatcircular arcs—supported by rigorous derivations and pedagogical exposition. For uniformcontinuous distributions, we compute optimal …

Innate immunity predictors of HIV-1 risk and pathogenesis vary with reproductive hormones, pregnancy, and lactation, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that pregnancy-associated physiological adaptations alter systemic microRNA (miRNA) expression, thereby regulating immunity, pathogenesis and susceptibility to infection. We analyzed 174 serum samples from 88 participants in a longitudinal cohort from Uganda and Zimbabwe across pre-pregnancy (PP), pregnancy (P), and postpartum breastfeeding (BF). Cell-free peripheral blood miRNAs (n = 2083) were profiled using HTG EdgeSeq. Pregnancy-specific miRNAs were identified by intersecting differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs from P vs. PP and P vs. BF comparisons. miRNA targets and pathways …
Cylinder Wake Stability Effects Of Passive Forebody Modification And Active Harmonic Actuation, Matt Duran
Cylinder Wake Stability Effects Of Passive Forebody Modification And Active Harmonic Actuation, Matt Duran
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This dissertation investigates the manipulation of global and three-dimensional instabilities in the wake of a circular cylinder through two separate flow control methods. This study first focuses on the influence of attached leading edge forebodies as a form of passive flow control designed to introduce upstream streamline curvature, where the curvature takes the form of a concave and convex case. We demonstrate that for both cases this induced curvature significantly modifies the primary instability, which suppresses periodic vortex shedding (Von Kármán vortex street). We found an increase in critical Reynolds number of 56.6 and 60.1 for the concave and convex …

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The fault diagnostics in Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor drive system is critical for operational safety and system lifespan in propulsion system applications. However, signature parameters such as currents, voltages, speed, and torque have provided nonlinear behavior, which limits the usefulness of traditional model-based approaches. This research provides a deep learning based intelligent system to monitor the failures in marine propulsion system. Each signal feature is represented as a structured token, with a specific class token used to collect global contextual information. The proposed model captures both local temporal dynamics and global inter-feature interdependence multi-layer self-attention processes, allowing for the …

Mesopotamian Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Conventional surgical training systems are hampered by restricted case exposure, expense, and patient safety, whereas VR simulators often lack contextual and tactile realism. In this paper, an optical see-through AR simulator that overlays 3D anatomical guidance and instrument trajectory cues onto a physical phantom and provides real-time multimodal feedback and automated scoring are developed. A prospective controlled study (n=30 residents) compared AR training with a VR simulator and conventional model-based practice for a standardized orthopedic drilling task. The results were scores on completion time, placement deviation, error count, Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) global rating, confidence, decision-making accuracy, …
Holding The Past Carefully In Players’ Hands: Historically-Structured Boardgames And The Troubles In History Education, Hugh D. O'Donnell
Holding The Past Carefully In Players’ Hands: Historically-Structured Boardgames And The Troubles In History Education, Hugh D. O'Donnell
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Controversial histories, such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, are often excluded from formal education, forming a "null curriculum" due to their political sensitivity, emotional difficulty, and risk of bias or re-traumatising students. To address this, Historically-Structured Boardgames (HSBGs) offer an innovative pedagogical approach, engaging students cognitively and emotionally while navigating sensitive historical terrain.
HSBGs like "The Troubles: Shadow War in Northern Ireland 1964-1998" embed players within historically accurate socio-political and economic structures, emphasising player agency and the consequences of their actions. Players assume roles from six factions, confronting ethically charged "Narrative Cards" representing critical historical decision points. The game's …

Curriculum Approaches To Strengthening Student Employability And Improving Graduate Outcomes In The Stm Disciplines, Denise Jackson, Michael D. O’Connor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In Australia and elsewhere, curriculum improvements are needed to improve the development of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) graduates for future work and careers. Several studies document significant STM student attrition, poor graduate preparedness for work, relatively weak employment rates post-graduation, and mismatched expectations of graduate capabilities by employers. The inclusion of work-integrated learning (WIL) activities within curricula can better prepare students for relevant employment by bridging discipline-specific teaching with work practices. Traditionally, access to WIL has been limited for STM Bachelor students and a better understanding of WIL’s benefits and impact is needed to refine and extend STM WIL …

The most prominent one is YouTube, where many Vietnamese voters (specifically the older generation) gain their political information from. This research seeks to explore how Vietnamese voters make their voting decisions based on the information that they consume by analyzing the content of the four most popular …
