Implementing Interdisciplinary Team Rounding To Reduce External Ventricular Drain-Associated Infections, Laura Reiter
Implementing Interdisciplinary Team Rounding To Reduce External Ventricular Drain-Associated Infections, Laura Reiter
Student Scholarly Projects
External ventricular drains (EVD) are a common intervention in critical care areas for the management of hydrocephalus. The most common complication of this life-saving intervention is infection, which negatively impacts patient outcomes and overall healthcare costs. Current evidence shows that interdisciplinary team rounding improves compliance with evidence-based practice and reduces hospital-associated infection rates. The PICOT question that guided this project is: For patients with an external ventricular drain (EVD), what is the effect of interdisciplinary team rounding compared with the current practice of informal rounding, on compliance with an EVD care bundle and EVD-associated cerebrospinal fluid infections over two months? …

Mentoring Program For New Graduate Nurses, Kathryn Palermo
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The high turnover rate among newly licensed nurses has a negative impact on organizational costs, healthcare spending and patient outcomes. The turnover rate among newly licensed nurses, within their first year of practice, at the designated facility was 50%.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was “In new graduate nurses, how does a formal mentorship program, compared to no formal mentorship, affect the intent to leave within six weeks?”
Evidence: The scientific evidence supported both one-on-one and group mentoring. Retention and/or turnover was shown to be a positive outcome of formal mentor programs.
Intervention: The …

Doctor of Education (EdD)
This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) aimed to investigate the use of tabletop role-playing games in supporting the social and emotional development of students in upper elementary grade levels. Using a mixed-methods approach, this ISDiP follows a team of invested school community members as they planned, implemented, studied, and reflected on the outcomes of initiating targeted social and emotional learning interventions to 16 students from a small alternative school in Anchorage, Alaska. Through a 90-day cycle, the School's Network Improvement Community (NIC) organized and executed an after-school SEL club after data on a district-wide survey indicated that social and …
Investigation Of The Influence Of Tank Geometry On A Vessel's Stability Under Free Surface Effect When In Coastal Waters, Ross Fuge, Jahir Rizvi, Jahir Rizvi
Investigation Of The Influence Of Tank Geometry On A Vessel's Stability Under Free Surface Effect When In Coastal Waters, Ross Fuge, Jahir Rizvi, Jahir Rizvi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Tank sizes on liquid cargo carriers are becoming larger to minimise wasted spaces on-board and maximise payload capacity. This trend can significantly affect a vessel's stability and its design. Therefore, this paper investigates whether spherical tanks provide better stability than a traditional tank formed with vertical sides under a range of free surface scenarios. The motions of a model liquid cargo carrier hull with various sizes of tanks and various fill levels has been investigated in a coastal basin. Regular waves of various heights and frequencies have been generated and the rolling motions of the hull have been documented. Results …

Coastal ecosystems are experiencing degradation from compound impacts of climate change and multiple anthropogenic disturbances. These pressures often act synergistically and complicate designing effective conservation measures; consequently, large-scale coastal restoration actions become a wicked problem. The purpose of this study was to use two different food web models in a coordinated manner to inform resource managers in their assessment of the ecological effects of a large-scale marsh restoration project. A team was formed that included the model developers and outside scientists, who were asked to use available model results of the calibrated simulations of an Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) model …

Transversus Abdominus Plane Block For Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, Monicka Roden, Nancy Ann Westbrook, Lisa Herbinger
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks are utilized as an opioid-sparing anesthetic regimen and are incorporated into Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs to promote higher quality care for all surgical patients. Transversus abdominis plane blocks decrease pain scores, nausea and vomiting, respiratory depression, the time until ambulation and return of bowel mobility, and length of hospital stay. Transversus abdominis plane blocks have been shown to be superior to the current “gold standard,†thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA), for multimodal analgesia in an ERAS pathway. An ultrasound guided TAP block was performed after induction in a case involving a 41-year-old female with …
Methods To Achieve One-Lung Ventilation, Laura Starr Wagner
Methods To Achieve One-Lung Ventilation, Laura Starr Wagner
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Enabling surgical access in the thorax is the most common indication for lung isolation and one-lung ventilation (OLV). Achieving lung isolation for thoracic surgery remains an arduous task in anesthesia. Methods to achieve lung isolation are the placement of a double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT), bronchial blocker (BB) with a single-lumen endotracheal tube (SLT), and intentional insertion of a SLT into the main bronchus. Confirmation with fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) is crucial to verify placement of these devices due to high malposition rates.

Sugammadex In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis, Presley Harrison
Sugammadex In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis, Presley Harrison
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder caused by a decrease in functional acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction resulting from their destruction or inactivation by antibodies. Patients with MG can experience marked sensitivity to nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), and require specialized anesthetic care because of their increased risk of postoperative weakness and respiratory failure. Since pyridostigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor, is a mainstay of MG treatment, the conventional neostigmine antagonism is unfavorable. Sugammadex is a direct, selective antagonist of aminosteroid NMBAs. It is a cyclodextrin derivative that irreversibly encapsulates rocuronium or vecuronium to terminate its action at the nicotinic …

Airway And Pulmonary Optimization In The Early Postoperative Period, Jared Hargett, David Fort
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Hypoxia in the early postoperative period can be the result of a various number of causes. Anesthesia providers must be able to quickly identify possible causes of hypoxia and apply appropriate pulmonary interventions. Potential causes of hypoxia can result from residual neuromuscular blockade from paralytic agents, respiratory depression from narcotic administration, laryngospasm, or an airway obstruction. Upper airway anatomy consists of cartilage and bone structures of the nose and mouth, followed by the soft tissue of the oropharynx and hypopharynx, and ending at the glottic opening of the vocal cords. The soft tissue of the oropharynx is prone to collapse …

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in medical applications due to their antibacterial and antiviral properties. Despite the extensive study of AgNPs, their toxicity and their effect on human health is poorly understood, as a result of issues such as poor control of NP properties and lack of proper characterization. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined characterization, bio-uptake, and toxicity of well-characterized polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated AgNPs in exposure media during exposure time using primary human cells (peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)). AgNPs were synthesized in-house and characterized using a multimethod approach. Results indicated the transformation of NPs …

The intense research activities on the hybrid organic−inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have led to the greatly improved light absorbers for solar cells with high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, it is still challenging to find an alternative lead-free perovskite to replace the organohalide lead perovskites to achieve high PCE. This is because both previous experimental and theoretical investigations have shown that the Pb2+ cations play a dominating role in contributing the desirable frontier electronic bands of the HOIPs for light absorbing. Recent advances in the chemical synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) metal-free perovskites, by replacing Pb2+ with NH4+ …

Abstract
The increasing amount of publicly available research data provides the opportunity to link and integrate data in order to create and prove novel hypotheses, to repeat experiments or to compare recent data to data collected at a different time or place. However, recent studies have shown that retrieving relevant data for data reuse is a time-consuming task in daily research practice. In this study, we explore what hampers dataset retrieval in biodiversity research, a field that produces a large amount of heterogeneous data. In particular, we focus on scholarly search interests and metadata, the primary source of data in …
A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber
A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A cell-averaged constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector is described and applied to data collected with a multibeam echo sounder (MBES). The CFAR detector is designed specifically for transient targets observed with MBES, and operates under the assumption that background noise, including volume and seafloor reverberation, is locally stationary in time. This assumption, and the CFAR detector performance in general, was examined for data collected by a 30-kHz MBES operating in the Gulf of Mexico where the targets of interest were methane gas bubble plumes rising up from the seabed. Results with example data suggest that the CFAR detector was …

A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille
Theses and Dissertations
Thermotaxis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is studied at the cellular scale of the amphid finger-like ciliated (AFD) neurons, which have previously been shown to be essential for thermoreception. The voltage and calcium signals of AFD during temperature stimuli are described with ordinary differential equations. The primary calcium model is a modified version of that published by Kuramochi and Doi in 2017 to explain the calcium responses of the chemosensitive amphid single-ciliated right (ASER) neuron to fluctuations in extracellular salt concentration. To account for the effects of temperature, changes to the stimuli conditions under which inactivation takes place …
Effects Of Exercise Intensity And Type On Executive Function In Elementary-Aged Children, Patrick Pommier
Effects Of Exercise Intensity And Type On Executive Function In Elementary-Aged Children, Patrick Pommier
Theses and Dissertations
The interactions of exercise on executive functioning (EF) have been studied thoroughly in previous literature, focusing mostly on the interactions of aerobic exercise (AE) intensity and its effects on inhibition and working memory. Although multiple categories of EF have been shown to improve based on aerobic exercise, the foundation of brain development relies within its ability to utilize all three areas of EF simultaneously. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of exercise intensity and type of exercise (cognitive activation) on EF in elementary-aged children. Design: Eighteen children (mean age=10.4, SD=0.5, 61.1% girls) participated in a …

The in vitro modeling of cardiac development and cardiomyopathies in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) provides opportunities to aid the discovery of genetic, molecular, and developmental changes that are causal to, or influence, cardiomyopathies and related diseases. To better understand the functional and disease modeling potential of iPSC-differentiated CMs and to provide a proof of principle for large, epidemiological-scale disease gene discovery approaches into cardiomyopathies, well-characterized CMs, generated from validated iPSCs of 12 individuals who belong to four sibships, and one of whom reported a major adverse cardiac event (MACE), were analyzed by genome-wide mRNA sequencing. The …
