Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are responsible for about 25% of cancer cases worldwide. HPV-16 E7 antigen is a tumor-associated antigen (TAA) commonly expressed in HPV-induced tumors; however, it has low immunogenicity. The interaction of 4-1BBL with its receptor induces pleiotropic effects on innate, adaptive, and regulatory immunity and, if fused to TAAs in DNA vaccines, can improve the antitumor response; however, there is low transfection and antitumor efficiency. Oncolytic virotherapy is promising for antitumor gene therapy as it can be selectively replicated in tumor cells, inducing cell lysis, and furthermore, tumor cell debris can be taken in by immune cells to …

Self-Contradiction In Faculty's Talk About Writing: Making And Unmaking Autonomous Models Of Literacy, Andrea R. Olinger Feb 2021

Self-Contradiction In Faculty's Talk About Writing: Making And Unmaking Autonomous Models Of Literacy, Andrea R. Olinger

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Disciplines and Academic Literacies, researchers have produced compelling evidence of the disjunction between faculty members’ assertions that good writing is universal—i.e., the autonomous model of literacy—and faculty’s own tacit practice of discipline-specific conventions. In studies of race and language in education, scholars have identified disconnections between what teachers profess to value—e.g., students’ right to their own language—and how they actually grade. Contradictions are a natural part of any ideology, and these are commonly understood to demonstrate the resilience of the autonomous model. In this article, however, I introduce a set of theoretical tools …

An Investigation Of Cross-Links On Crystallization And Degradation In A Novel, Photocross-Linkable Poly (Lactic Acid) System, Nicholas Baksh Feb 2021

An Investigation Of Cross-Links On Crystallization And Degradation In A Novel, Photocross-Linkable Poly (Lactic Acid) System, Nicholas Baksh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Polymeric molecular structure consists of repeating units bonded together. Mechanicalproperties can be altered without affecting chemical makeup by altering the number of these units. Small molecules can be introduced and/or polymers can be modified to form bonds between molecular chains. Cross-linking, as this is called, also introduces mechanical variation with minimal effects on chemical composition. Lastly, polymer chains reorient themselves in response to intermolecular forces. This temperature dependent response is known as crystallization. Although chemistry is unaltered, mechanical properties can depend highly on the percent of the sample that is crystallized.

Cross-linking is known to enhance the mechanical properties of …

Financial Contagion During Stock Market Bubbles, Diego Escobari, Shahil Sharma Feb 2021

Financial Contagion During Stock Market Bubbles, Diego Escobari, Shahil Sharma

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We investigate the role of bubbles on financial contagion using a set of developed economies. First, using the recursive flexible window right-tailed ADF-based procedure, we date stamp bubble periods in stock index series. Second, we capture contagion with a DCC multivariate GARCH framework. In a third step, we construct a panel by pooling across the time-series dynamic conditional correlations and bubbles to estimate various dynamic panel specifications that consider the endogenous nature of bubbles. We find statistically significant decreases in the dynamic correlations during periods of bubbles, which shows that the financial contagion between pair of countries diminishes when any …

Dear Courts: I, Too, Am A Reasonable Man, Marvel L. Faulkner

Pepperdine Law Review

There has been an ongoing debate regarding police-on-Black violence since the dawn of the United States police force. At every stage, the criminal justice system has had a monumental impact on the plight of the Black American community. The historical roots of racism within the criminal justice system have had adverse effects on the Black American psyche. Emerging research suggests that the upsurge in reporting police-on-Black violence—including videos shot from pedestrian camera phones and uploaded to multimedia platforms and historical accounts of the agonizing treatment Black Americans have experienced beginning with Slave Patrols—has affected individualized behavior during interactions with police …

The Increased Exposure To Coronavirus (Covid-19) For Prisoners Justifies Early Release: And The Wider Implications Of This For Sentencing—Reducing Most Prison Terms Due To The Harsh Incidental Consequences Of Prison, Mirko Bagaric, Peter Isham, Jennifer Svilar Feb 2021

The Increased Exposure To Coronavirus (Covid-19) For Prisoners Justifies Early Release: And The Wider Implications Of This For Sentencing—Reducing Most Prison Terms Due To The Harsh Incidental Consequences Of Prison, Mirko Bagaric, Peter Isham, Jennifer Svilar

Pepperdine Law Review

The risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading in prisons is especially acute. This has resulted in an unprecedented number of prisoners being released across the world – including many prisoners in the United States. From the health, social, and political perspectives, this is a sound approach. This is especially the situation in relation to older prisoners and those who have not been imprisoned for serious sexual and violent offenses. Despite the large number of prisoners that are being released, the United States will still have the largest prison population on earth—and by a large margin. However, the coronavirus pandemic and the …

The Case For Replacing The Independent Intermediary Doctrine With Proximate Cause And Fourth Amendment Review In § 1983 Civil Rights Cases, Amanda Peters Feb 2021

The Case For Replacing The Independent Intermediary Doctrine With Proximate Cause And Fourth Amendment Review In § 1983 Civil Rights Cases, Amanda Peters

Pepperdine Law Review

Plaintiffs who file claims under § 1983 of the Civil Rights Act encounter a strange blend of civil rights, tort, and criminal procedure laws. When civil rights plaintiffs sue officers and government agencies for violations of their Fourth Amendment rights, federal courts may cut off liability using qualified immunity, but they may also use a lesser-known defense of sorts called the independent intermediate doctrine. When courts permit officers to raise both qualified immunity and the doctrine, the two defensive theories provide officers something akin to absolute immunity. The doctrine treats judges, prosecutors, grand jurors, and fact finders as superseding agents …
