Permafrost thaw in northern ecosystems may cause large quantities of carbon (C) to move from soil to atmospheric pools. Because soil microbial communities play a critical role in regulating C fluxes from soils, we examined microbial activity and greenhouse gas production soon after permafrost thaw and ground collapse (into collapse‐scar bogs), relative to the permafrost plateau or older thaw features. Using multiple field and laboratory‐based assays at a field site in interior Alaska, we show that the youngest collapse‐scar bog had the highest CH4 production potential from soil incubations, and, based upon temporal changes in porewater concentrations and 13 …

Compared to low doses of gamma irradiation (γ-IR), high-charge-and-energy (HZE) particle IR may have different biological response thresholds in cardiac tissue at lower doses, and these effects may be IR type and dose dependent. Three- to four-month-old female CB6F1/Hsd mice were exposed once to one of four different doses of the following types of radiation: γ-IR 137Cs (40-160 cGy, 0.662 MeV), 14Si-IR (4-32 cGy, 260 MeV/n), or 22Ti-IR (3-26 cGy, 1 GeV/n). At 16 months post-exposure, animals were sacrificed and hearts were harvested and archived as part of the NASA Space Radiation Tissue Sharing Forum. These heart tissue samples were …

Improving Medication Reconciliation Quality During Long-Term Acute Care Transitions Of Care, Teresa Clark

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Literature reveals accurate medication reconciliation results in increased patient satisfaction, improved patient outcomes, higher patient safety, shorter length of stay, and cost-effectiveness. With every transition of care a patient experiences, their risk for medication discrepancies increases—the project aims to enhance the medication reconciliation process in one long-term acute care hospital in Arkansas. The project aims to evaluate the current process, educate staff, implement a medication reconciliation toolkit, and assess accuracy. Baseline information resulted from reviewing twenty medication reconciliations. Seventeen of the 20 (85%) records had some type of medication discrepancy: (13) lack of verification, (6) dosing errors, (5) missing stop …

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors are extremely rare tumors with highly nonspecific symptoms. This benign but aggressive disease has a slow course of progression; however, it can ultimately lead to irreversible damage to a joint. Here we describe a case of a 45-year-old female with a diagnosis of tenosynovial giant cell tumors of the distal tibiofibular joint, the second case described in the literature for such location. Appropriate imaging studies and ultimately histologic studies are necessary for the correct diagnosis. Some locations are particularly unusual for these tumors making a high level of suspicion as well as treatment by an oncology …

Using computerized content analysis tools (CATA), we analyzed positive and negative comments to identify key themes. Key themes and words included “doctor,” “hospital,” “staff,” and “time.” These findings highlight the importance of medical staff to patient experience. Results indicated that Yelp had the lowest average rating. CATA also revealed that …

Determination Of The Rydberg Constant From The Emission Spectra Of H And He+, Kyle D. Shaffer Feb 2021

Determination Of The Rydberg Constant From The Emission Spectra Of H And He+, Kyle D. Shaffer

Ramifications

Abstract

In this experiment, the Rydberg constants for the hydrogen atom and He+ were determined by analysis of the emission spectra of Hand He, respectively, in comparison to the principal quantum numbers of each transition. Using both a hydrogen and then a helium atomic lamp attached to a 0.5 m grating spectrometer and a photomultiplier detector (PMT), a change in voltage detected by the PMT can be paired with a corresponding wavelength passing through the spectrometer from each emission peak in the visible to ultraviolet range. The peaks acquired from this change in voltage were analyzed to find their …

Network Visualization Of A Retracted Article: Repeated Proliferation Of Error Through Citation Networks, Rosy Jan, Kirat Nazir, Kushboo Rani, Irtiza Peer, Waseem Farooq

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Retraction is used as an optimum tool to uphold and safe-guide the integrity of scholarly literature. However, knowingly or unknowingly the authors build the work on these false claims by citing the retracted articles. Such dependencies on retracted articles may become implicit and indirect causing profound and long-lasting threat to the credibility of the literature. Consequently, it is important to detect and analyze such threats. The article aims to demonstrate dependency of citing articles on retracted article with reference to the rest of the literature. A case study of highly cited (as reported by retraction watch) retracted article ”Spontaneous …

CD4 T cell death or survival following initial HIV infection is crucial for the development of viral reservoirs and latent infection, making its evaluation critical in devising strategies for HIV cure. Here we infected primary CD4 T cells with a wild-type HIV-1 and investigated the death and survival mechanisms in productively infected and bystander cells during early HIV infection. We found that HIV-infected cells exhibited increased programmed cell death, such as apoptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis, than uninfected cells. However, productively infected (p24+) cells and bystander (p24-) cells displayed different patterns of cell death due to differential expression of pro-/anti-apoptotic proteins …

Arctic Observations And Numerical Simulations Of Surface Wind Effects On Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera Measurements, Kyle E. Fitch, Chaoxun Hang, Ahmad Talaei, Timothy J. Garrett

Physics Student Research

Ground-based measurements of frozen precipitation are heavily influenced by interactions of surface winds with gauge-shield geometry. The Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC), which photographs hydrometeors in free-fall from three different angles while simultaneously measuring their fall speed, has been used in the field at multiple midlatitude and polar locations both with and without wind shielding. Here, we present an analysis of Arctic field observations – with and without a Belfort double Alter shield – and compare the results to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the airflow and corresponding particle trajectories around the unshielded MASC. MASC-measured fall speeds compare well with …

Nitrate Uptake Enhanced By Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Tropical Montane Streams, Bianca M. Rodriguez-Cardona, Adam S. Wymore, William H. Mcdowell

NRESS Publications

Tropical forests store large amounts of Earth’s terrestrial C, but many tropical montane streams have low dissolved organic matter (DOM). This low availability of energy likely limits certain pathways of inorganic N uptake, as evidenced by the high rates of nitrification and predominance of nitrate (NO3−) in the total pool of dissolved N seen in many tropical montane forests. To explore the influence of DOM availability on tropical stream N cycling, we performed nutrient pulse additions of NO3− with or without an added C source (acetate or urea) in streams of the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. In the absence …

Can Track And Field’S Governing Body Ban Female Runners From Competing In The U.S. Because Of High Testosterone Levels?, Katz, Ronald S., Luckinbill, Robert W.

Santa Clara Law Review

This article explores the applicability, if any, in the United States of a decision rendered by a private sports arbitration organization in Lausanne, Switzerland: the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The decision validated regulations of World Athletics—the private organization that governs track and field internationally—which had the effect of banning an Olympic champion, Caster Semenya of South Africa, from international competition against females because she had testosterone levels that World Athletics deemed too high. The article focuses on the fact that the CAS decision uses the law of Monaco to decide the matter. CAS specifically states that the decision …

The biological determinants of the wide spectrum of COVID-19 clinical manifestations are not fully understood. Here, over 1400 plasma proteins and 2600 single-cell immune features comprising cell phenotype, basal signaling activity, and signaling responses to inflammatory ligands were assessed in peripheral blood from patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19, at the time of diagnosis. Using an integrated computational approach to analyze the combined plasma and single-cell proteomic data, we identified and independently validated a multivariate model classifying COVID-19 severity (multi-class AUCtraining = 0.799, p-value = 4.2e-6; multi-class AUCvalidation = 0.773, p-value = 7.7e-6). Features of this high-dimensional model recapitulated …
