Educator Perceptions Of Adult-Student Relationships, Racial Climate, And Associated Discipline Techniques, Annmary S. Abdou, Ashley M. Mayworm
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The overuse and misuse of exclusionary and punitive discipline practices in schools have been consistently linked to social and educational inequities across the globe, particularly for students of color. However, there is an ongoing need for a greater understanding of how school climate factors (e.g., adult-student relationships, racial climate) relate to the types of discipline approaches observed, particularly from the viewpoints of educators. The current study used hierarchical multiple regression analyses to investigate teacher, administrator, and staff (N = 168) survey responses from four junior high schools where discipline disproportionality for Latinx students had been previously established. Analyses explored …

The Ethical Principles Of Financial Wellness And Coaching For Law Enforcement, Eric Scovil
The Ethical Principles Of Financial Wellness And Coaching For Law Enforcement, Eric Scovil
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The implementation of wellness programs in law enforcement today is quickly becoming a primary focus of departments throughout the nation. Implementation of a financial coaching program as a component of a holistic officer wellness program can serve to greatly reduce one of the single largest causes of stress in society; money. One of the hallmarks of successful public safety is planning and preparation for the unknown. Individuals armed with practical knowledge and well-defined financial plans are better suited to confront personal and professional decisions with a clear mind and eyes fixed on the future. Successful implementation of a financial coaching …

Study Finds Therapy Dogs Have No Effect On Anxiety In Teens, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Companion Animals and Health
The study was carefully done and controlled for individual differences in teenager anxiety, had adequate number of subjects, and included both objective and subjective measures. In the end, the study found that the presence of a real dog, or being able to touch a real dog, did not reduce subject anxiety.

Study Finds Therapy Dogs Have No Effect On Anxiety In Teens, Harold Herzog
One Health
The use of therapy dogs has increased and the number of scientific papers examining the impact of therapy dogs on human health has also increased from 19 in 1990 to 698 in 2020. However, why canine therapy works remains something of a mystery. In a recent paper, researchers from Tufts University looked at two mechanisms that might underlie any benefits of canine therapy – social support and the physical contact provided by the dogs. The researchers were confident that teen anxiety would drop in the presence of the dogs but wanted to explore possible mechanisms for such a drop. However, …

Are Stock Returns And Output Growth Higher Under Democrats?, Ray C. Fair
Are Stock Returns And Output Growth Higher Under Democrats?, Ray C. Fair
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Recent literature suggests that both stock returns and economic growth are significantly higher under Democratic presidential administrations. This is a puzzle in that persistent differences in stock returns seem unlikely in efficient markets, and it is not obvious why Democrats should do better. Often these kinds of results go away upon further analysis or more data, and this appears to be true in the present case. In this paper the sample is extended to 27 administrations, from Wilson-1 through Trump. While the mean stock return under the Democrats is generally higher, none of the differences in means are significant at …

Most patients with glioblastoma (GBM) die within 2 years. A major therapeutic goal is to target GBM stem cells (GSCs), a subpopulation of cells that contribute to treatment resistance and recurrence. Since their discovery in 2003, GSCs have been isolated using single-surface markers, such as CD15, CD44, CD133, and α6 integrin. It remains unknown how these single-surface marker-defined GSC populations compare with each other in terms of signaling and function and whether expression of different combinations of these markers is associated with different functional capacity. Using mass cytometry and fresh operating room specimens, we found 15 distinct GSC subpopulations in …

Sanidine dating and magnetostratigraphy constrain the timing of integration of the lower Colorado River (southwestern United States and northern Mexico) with the evolving Gulf of California. The Colorado River arrived at Cottonwood valley (Nevada and Arizona) after 5.24 Ma (during or after the Thvera subchron). The river reached the proto–Gulf of California once between 4.80 and 4.63 Ma (during the C3n.2r subchron), not at 5.3 Ma and 5.0 Ma as previously proposed. Duplication of section across newly identified strands of the Earthquake Valley fault zone (California) probably explains the discrepancy. The data also imply the start of focused plate motion …

Frege’S Theory Of Real Numbers: A Consistent Rendering, Francesca Boccuni, Marco Panza
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Frege’s definition of the real numbers, as envisaged in the second volume of Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, is fatally flawed by the inconsistency of Frege’s ill-fated Basic Law V. We restate Frege’s definition in a consistent logical framework and investigate whether it can provide a logical foundation of real analysis. Our conclusion will deem it doubtful that such a foundation along the lines of Frege’s own indications is possible at all.

Development of local technologies is crucial to the sustainable energy agenda in resource-limited countries and the world. Strengthening local green technologies and promoting local utilization will reduce carbon emissions that could be generated during transportation and delivery of green products from one country to another. In this paper we developed bio-oil/diesel blends using a low-tech pyrolysis system designed for smallholder farmers in developing countries and tested their appropriateness for diesel engines using standard ASTM methods. Corn stover retrieved from smallholder farmers in Gayaza, Uganda were pyrolyzed in a batch rocket stove reactor at 350 °C and liquid bio-oil harvested. Bio-oil …
Analysis And Prediction Of Californian County Precipitation Using Atmospheric River Indices, Soil Moisture, And Snow Water Equivalent, Avnika Manaktala
Analysis And Prediction Of Californian County Precipitation Using Atmospheric River Indices, Soil Moisture, And Snow Water Equivalent, Avnika Manaktala
Geodata Science Technical Reports
Atmospheric rivers (AR) are long and narrow filaments in the atmosphere that transport water vapor in the lower troposphere. They release water vapor in the form of rain or snow when they make landfall and can therefore be linked to floods in extreme cases. During a year where the Californian region has faced wildfires due to the impacts of climate change, it is pivotal to understand the precipitation patterns as it has major implications towards the surface environment in the region. Soil Moisture and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) have been found to correlate with AR in the past and this …
Spin Superfluidity In Noncollinear Antiferromagnets, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Spin Superfluidity In Noncollinear Antiferromagnets, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We explore the spin superfluid transport in exchange interaction dominated three-sublattice antiferromagnets. The system in the long-wavelength regime is described by an $SO(3)$ invariant field theory. Additional corrections from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions or anisotropies can break the symmetry; however, the system still approximately holds a $U(1)$-rotation symmetry. Thus, the power-law spatial decay signature of spin superfluidity is identified in a nonlocal-measurement setup where the spin injection is described by the generalized spin-mixing conductance. We suggest iron jarosites as promising material candidates for realizing our proposal.

Background
Mounting evidence suggests that maternal diet influences pregnancy and birth outcomes, but its contribution to the global epidemic of childhood obesity has not as yet been definitively characterized. We investigated whether maternal whole diet quality and inflammatory potential influence childhood adiposity.
Methods
We harmonized and pooled individual participant data from 16,295 mother-child pairs in seven European birth cohorts. Maternal pre-, early-, late-, and whole-pregnancy (any time during pregnancy) dietary quality and inflammatory potential assessed with the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) score and the energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII™) score, respectively. Primary outcome was childhood overweight and obesity …
