Information Technology Solutions For Overdose Prevention: Perspectives From The Field, Sarah Ali, Aliese Alter, Jeff Beeson

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Drug addiction and misuse haves long plagued communities throughout the country, with drug overdose claiming more than 750,000 lives over the past two decades. As the crisis is multifaceted, it requires and beckons all sectors to respond, including the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. This creates unique data sharing challenges. In response to those challenges and recognizing the need for more accurate and timely data, the Washington Baltimore HIDTA created the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP). This platform provides near real-time suspected overdose surveillance data across jurisdictions to support public health and safety response efforts. This article discusses the …

Adapting To Remote Library Services During Covid-19., Lydia A. Howes, Lynne Ferrell, Geoffrey S. Pettys, Adam Roloff

Articles

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent Stay At Home order, the Southern Illinois University Medical Library utilized new technologies and implemented new virtual service models in order to improve internal communication, and to continue providing services and resources to patrons remotely. The changes happened quickly, and the librarians faced several challenges during this time, but things went smoothly overall and there were some considerable silver linings. Several of the newly adopted technologies, service models, and virtual resource offerings proved to be extremely effective and their use will continue beyond the duration of the pandemic.

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Agricultural data are crucial to many aspects of production, commerce, and research involved in feeding the global community. However, in most agricultural research disciplines standard best practices for data management and publication do not exist. Here we propose a set of best practices in the areas of peer review, minimal dataset development, data repositories, citizen science initiatives, and support for best data management. We illustrate some of these best practices with a case study in dairy agroecosystems research. While many common, and increasingly disparate data management and publication practices are entrenched in agricultural disciplines, opportunities are readily available for promoting …

Racial Disproportionality In School Discipline, Melissa Becker Feb 2021

Racial Disproportionality In School Discipline, Melissa Becker

Graduate Teacher Education

Racial disproportionality in discipline has been present, documented and researched for several decades. A growing body of evidence indicates that students of color, most specifically African American males, receive the highest rate and most severe forms of exclusionary discipline (suspension and expulsion). Certain contributing factors found responsible for the increasing rates in disproportionality, such as implicit bias and the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy, have been linked to the Nation’s deeply rooted history of racism. Therefore causing the academic achievement gap between African American and white students to also continue to widen. Evidence further indicates a correlation between exclusionary discipline …

Comparison Of A Smartfin With An Infrared Sea Surface Temperature Radiometer In The Atlantic Ocean, Robert J. W. Brewin, Werenfrid Wimmer, Phillip J. Bresnahan, Tyler Cyronak, Andreas J. Andersson, Giorgio Dall’Olmo

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The accuracy and precision of satellite sea surface temperature (SST) products in nearshore coastal waters are not well known, owing to a lack of in-situ data available for validation. It has been suggested that recreational watersports enthusiasts, who immerse themselves in nearshore coastal waters, be used as a platform to improve sampling and fill this gap. One tool that has been used worldwide by surfers is the Smartfin, which contains a temperature sensor integrated into a surfboard fin. If tools such as the Smartfin are to be considered for satellite validation work, they must be carefully evaluated against state-of-the-art techniques …

My Body, My Temple: The Constitutional Requirement For Religious Exemptions To A Covid-19 Vaccination Mandate, Ben Davisson

SLU Law Journal Online

While the COVID-19 crisis has caused many to fear the threat that the virus poses to the health and safety of themselves and their loved ones, for others, and particularly for those with certain religious beliefs, the cure is worse than the disease. The possibility of a government mandated vaccine has caused extreme anxiety for many Americans. In this article, Ben Davisson discusses the constitutionality of mandatory vaccination programs and how such programs may come into conflict with the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.

Quantum Gravitational Onset Of Starobinsky Inflation In A Closed Universe, Lucia Gordon, Bao Fei Li, Parampreet Singh Feb 2021

Quantum Gravitational Onset Of Starobinsky Inflation In A Closed Universe, Lucia Gordon, Bao Fei Li, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

Recent cosmic microwave background observations favor low-energy-scale inflationary models in a closed universe. However, the onset of inflation in such models for a closed universe is known to be severely problematic. In particular, such a universe recollapses within a few Planck seconds and encounters a big crunch singularity when initial conditions are given in the Planck regime. We show that this problem of the onset of inflation in low-energy-scale inflationary models can be successfully overcome in a quantum-gravitational framework where the big bang/big crunch singularities are resolved and a nonsingular cyclic evolution exists prior to inflation. As an example, we …

Characterization, Immobilization, And Polymer Related Applications Of Watermelon Seed Powder, A Practical Source Of Urease Enzyme, Anthony Quan Quoc Mai Feb 2021

Characterization, Immobilization, And Polymer Related Applications Of Watermelon Seed Powder, A Practical Source Of Urease Enzyme, Anthony Quan Quoc Mai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Urease enzyme was crystallized almost a century ago, and to this day its intrinsic stability is not ideal for everyday applications. This work introduces a new process by which a naturally encapsulated material, watermelon seed powder (WMSP), is characterized for its stability and activity. WMSP enzymatic activity has been measured for over a year at various storage conditions—exposed to ambient atmosphere for a year, WMSP retained above 90% activity. In aqueous conditions, the enzyme maintained above 60% activity after two months; with the addition of a preservative that number stays at about 90%. There is a pH shift of the …

Fluid Separation And Network Deformation In Wetting Of Soft And Swollen Surfaces, Zhuoyun Cai, Artem Skabeev, Svetlana Morozova, Jonathan T. Pham Feb 2021

Fluid Separation And Network Deformation In Wetting Of Soft And Swollen Surfaces, Zhuoyun Cai, Artem Skabeev, Svetlana Morozova, Jonathan T. Pham

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

When a water drop is placed onto a soft polymer network, a wetting ridge develops at the drop periphery. The height of this wetting ridge is typically governed by the drop surface tension balanced by elastic restoring forces of the polymer network. However, the situation is more complex when the network is swollen with fluid, because the fluid may separate from the network at the contact line. Here we study the fluid separation and network deformation at the contact line of a soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network, swollen with silicone oil. By controlling both the degrees of crosslinking and swelling, we …

Protection Of Data In Armed Conflict, Robin Geiss, Henning Lahmann

International Law Studies

This article presents a novel way to conceptualize the protection of data in situations of armed conflict. Although the question of the targeting of data through adversarial military cyber operations and its implications for the qualification of such conduct under International Humanitarian Law has been on scholars’ and states’ radar for the last few years, there remain a number of misunderstandings as to how to think about the notion of “data.” Based on a number of fictional scenarios, the article clarifies the pertinent terminology and makes some expedient distinctions between various types of data. It then analyzes how existing international …

Cellular And Molecular Dynamics During Early Oral Osseointegration: A Comprehensive Characterization In The Lewis Rat, Sutton E. Wheelis, Cláudia Cristina Biguetti, Shruti Natarajan, Alexandra Arteaga, Jihad El Allami, Bhuvana Lakkasetter Chandrashekar, Gustavo P. Garlet, Danieli C. Rodrigues

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Objective:

There is a need to improve the predictability of osseointegration in implant dentistry. Current literature uses a variety of in vivo titanium (Ti) implantation models to investigate failure modes, and test new materials and surfaces. However, these models produces a variety of results, making comparison across studies difficult. The purpose of this study is to validate an oral osseointegration in the Lewis rat to provide a reproducible baseline to track inflammatory response and healing of Ti implants.

Methods:

Ti screws (0.76 mm Ø x 2 mm length) were implanted into the maxillary diastema of 52 adult male Lewis rats. …
