Validation Of Ensemble-Based Probabilistic Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change, Ryan D. Torn, Mark Demaria Mar 2021

Validation Of Ensemble-Based Probabilistic Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change, Ryan D. Torn, Mark Demaria

Atmospheric and Environmental Science Faculty Scholarship

Although there has been substantial improvement to numerical weather prediction models, accurate predictions of tropical cyclone rapid intensification (RI) remain elusive. The processes that govern RI, such as convection, may be inherently less predictable; therefore a probabilistic approach should be adopted. Although there have been numerous studies that have evaluated probabilistic intensity (i.e., maximum wind speed) forecasts from high resolution models, or statistical RI predictions, there has not been a comprehensive analysis of high-resolution ensemble predictions of various intensity change thresholds. Here, ensemble-based probabilities of various intensity changes are computed from experimental Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) and Hurricanes …

Taylor V. Riojas: Anatomy Of A Supreme Court Intervention That Should Not Have Been Necessary, Zamir Ben-Dan Mar 2021

Taylor V. Riojas: Anatomy Of A Supreme Court Intervention That Should Not Have Been Necessary, Zamir Ben-Dan

Nevada Law Journal Forum

In September 2013, an inmate in a Texas prison allegedly spent six days in two uninhabitable cells. One cell was covered in “massive amounts of feces;” the other cell was freezing cold and lacked a sink, a bunk and a toilet, containing only a clogged floor drain for him to relieve himself. Confinement under these abominable conditions were plainly illegal under the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Yet, two lower federal courts found, for slightly different reasons, that the inmate had no actionable constitutional claim and that the defendants were entitled to qualified immunity. Both decisions displayed a …

Structure Of Clostridium Perfringens Type Iv Pili, Alexander R. Meyer Mar 2021

Structure Of Clostridium Perfringens Type Iv Pili, Alexander R. Meyer

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Type IV pili (T4P) are thin, hair-like bacterial appendages composed of protein subunits polymerized into a helical fiber. T4P perform diverse functions such as host cell adhesion, biofilm formation, natural competence, and twitching motility. While T4P are well characterized in Gram-negative bacteria, they have more recently been found in Gram-positive bacteria as well. In this work we aimed to solve the crystal structure of the type IV major pilin protein PilA2 from Clostridium perfringens, the predominant pilus subunit which makes up about 99% of the pilus fiber. We report expression, purification, and crystallization conditions which are sufficient for X-ray …

Perceptions Of Black Lives Matter: An Analysis Of The Movement And Its Impact On The Relationship Between The Lincoln Police Department, The Media And The Public, Paige Heinemann Mar 2021

Perceptions Of Black Lives Matter: An Analysis Of The Movement And Its Impact On The Relationship Between The Lincoln Police Department, The Media And The Public, Paige Heinemann

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This study examines the relationships between the Lincoln Police Department (LPD), the Lincoln Journal Star (LJS), and the public as they interacted during the Black Lives Matter protests in Lincoln, Nebraska, during June 2020. In order to analyze the relationships between the three actors, I utilized previous research that examined the role of the media on perceptions of police, how media framing of police brutality influences perceptions, and how the four models of public relations function in communities. This led me to pose the following research question: How do the relationships between the Lincoln Police Department, the media and the …

Environmental Justice, Settler Colonialism, And More-Than-Humans In The Occupied West Bank: An Introduction, Irus Braverman Mar 2021

Environmental Justice, Settler Colonialism, And More-Than-Humans In The Occupied West Bank: An Introduction, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Our special issue provides a first-of-its kind attempt to examine environmental injustices in the occupied West Bank through interdisciplinary perspectives, pointing to the broader settler colonial and neoliberal contexts within which they occur and to their more-than-human implications. Specifically, we seek to understand what environmental justice—a movement originating from, and rooted in, the United States—means in the context of Palestine/Israel. Moving beyond the settler-native dialectic, we draw attention to the more-than-human flows that occur in the region—which include water, air, waste, cement, trees, donkeys, watermelons, and insects—to consider the dynamic, and often gradational, meanings of frontier, enclosure, and Indigeneity in …

The Politics Of Di/Visibility: Narrative Positioning And Disability Representation In Children’S Literature, Agathe Lancrenon Mar 2021

The Politics Of Di/Visibility: Narrative Positioning And Disability Representation In Children’S Literature, Agathe Lancrenon

Theses and Dissertations

Disabled individuals are the largest minority group in the United States and Disability scholarship is intricately connected to lived experiences and advocacy, but it too often remains overlooked even in conversations that intend to bring to light historically underrepresented groups. This dissertation provides an analysis of a broad range of children’s literature and its role in constructing literal and ideological images of disability. It offers a critical analysis of visuality in the following children’s texts: Wonder by R.J. Palacio, El Deafo by Cece Bell, Miss Little’s Gift by Douglas Wood, Thank You, Mr Falker by Patricia Polacco, A Boy and …

T cells are critical for the control of viral infections and T cell responses are regulated by a dynamic network of non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs (miR) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA). Here we show that an activation-induced decline of lncRNA growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5) activates DNA damage response (DDR), and regulates cellular functions and apoptosis in CD4 T cells derived from people living with HIV (PLHIV) via upregulation of miR-21. Notably, GAS5-miR21-mediated DDR and T cell dysfunction are observed in PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART), who often exhibit immune activation due to low-grade inflammation despite robust virologic control. We …

Was Facial Width-To-Height Ratio Subject To Sexual Selection Pressures? A Life Course Approach, Carolyn R. Hodges-Simeon, Graham Albert, George B. Richardson, Timothy S. Mchale, Seth M. Weinberg, Michael Gurven, Steven J.C. Gaulin

Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship

Sexual selection researchers have traditionally focused on adult sex differences; however, the schedule and pattern of sex-specific ontogeny can provide insights unobtainable from an exclusive focus on adults. Recently, it has been debated whether facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR; bi-zygomatic breadth divided by midface height) is a human secondary sexual characteristic (SSC). Here, we review current evidence, then address this debate using ontogenetic evidence, which has been under-explored in fWHR research. Facial measurements were collected from 3D surface images of males and females aged 3 to 40 (Study 1; US European-descent, n = 2449), and from 2D photographs of males and …

The “External Element” Of The Obligation To Ensure Respect For The Geneva Conventions: A Matter Of Treaty Interpretation, Marten Zwanenburg Mar 2021

The “External Element” Of The Obligation To Ensure Respect For The Geneva Conventions: A Matter Of Treaty Interpretation, Marten Zwanenburg

International Law Studies

In Common Article 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, States Parties undertake to “respect and ensure respect” for the Conventions. This article focuses on the question whether an interpretation of that provision leads to the conclusion that it contains an external element. The term “External element” refers to an obligation for States to ensure respect for the Conventions not only internally (i.e., by their nationals as a whole), but also by other States, and possibly even by organized armed groups involved in extraterritorial non-international armed conflicts. The article applies the rules of treaty interpretation, as codified in Articles 31 – …

Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han Mar 2021

Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han

Undergraduate Honors Theses

On February 19, 2020, the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019 went into effect, ushering in the use of Subchapter V by small business debtors. Lawmakers crafted Subchapter V with the intent to make the reorganization process more streamlined and cost effective than the standard Chapter 11 was for these debtors. With features such as the Subchapter V trustee, cramdown provisions, filing deadlines, lack of a creditors’ committee, and relaxed disclosure requirements, small business debtors should in theory be better positioned to emerge from bankruptcy as viable entities. Through quantitative analysis and qualitative research, this Article explores initial observations on …

Returning To Rejection: Outcomes And Boundary Conditions Of Mental Illness Stereotypes, Stefanie Fox Mar 2021

Returning To Rejection: Outcomes And Boundary Conditions Of Mental Illness Stereotypes, Stefanie Fox

Dissertations and Theses

Mental illness is a common condition in the United States, with over 20% of working age adults managing a mental illness condition in a given year. Disclosure of mental illness is often required for workers to take advantage of employer-provided resources (e.g., accommodations), yet use of resources is exceedingly low (less than 10%). Negative stigma-related outcomes are a top reason for which individuals delay the use of resources. Using an experimental design in an online data collection of 242 participants over two time points, the current study builds on existing organizational diversity literature to examine the stereotypes associated with mental …

The Mediating Role Of Pain Catastrophizing On The Association Between Depression And Pain Severity And Interference Among Elderly Asian Immigrants With Chronic Pain, Hee Jun Kim, Hyunjeong Park, Hee-Soon Juon

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose: The association between depression and chronic pain is well established. However, few studies have examined the pathways from depression to chronic pain. The present cross-cultural study aimed to test the mediating effects of pain catastrophizing on associations between depression and chronic pain (eg, pain severity, pain intensity) among Korean American elderly.

Patients and Methods: A total of 132 elderly Korean Americans with chronic pain were recruited from elderly daycare centers and Korean ethnic churches in the community. For mediation analyses, structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood estimation method was used. The bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval (CI) method …

Proximity To Power: The Challenges And Strategies Of Interviewing Elites In Higher Education Research, Kevin Mcclure, Jon L. Mcnaughtan

The Qualitative Report

Presidents, provosts, deans, and other upper-level administrators in higher education fit common definitions of “elites” in the context of qualitative research. Scholarship on methods specific to the field of higher education has not identified or described the unique challenges of interviewing these and other elites. The purpose of this paper is to examine challenges and share strategies for elite interviewing, with specific application to qualitative research in the field of higher education. We provide three examples of empirical studies involving elite interviewing and, using literature from other fields, highlight challenges and strategies. By anticipating challenges and implementing these strategies, researchers …
