Surrogacy Among Filipinos Who Have Struggled With Infertility: A Discourse Analysis, Gabrielle Marie A. Liamzon, Andrea Mari P. Santos, Marie Ashley G. Tamayo, Ma. Elizabeth J. Macapagal
Psychology Department Faculty Publications
Surrogacy continues to be practiced to address infertility in the Philippines; however, discussions on the method are sparse, given its limited accessibility and morally questionable procedures that may concern potential parents in a developing country. Using discourse analysis, the researchers interviewed ten (10) Filipino Roman Catholics who were struggling with infertility, to uncover how they construct the idea of surrogacy. The study shows the discourses on surrogacy are often approached in a detached manner, where potential parents describe the method as a last choice or one that is never considered. They articulate this position by highlighting the emotional factors surrogacy …
Discretion And Disparity In Federal Detention, Stephanie Holmes Didwania
Discretion And Disparity In Federal Detention, Stephanie Holmes Didwania
Northwestern University Law Review
The uniquely American phenomenon of mass incarceration plagues the pretrial space. People awaiting trial make up roughly 20% of those held in criminal custody in the United States. Largely overlooked by bail-reform advocates, pretrial detention in the federal criminal system presents a puzzle. The federal system detains defendants at a much higher rate than the states—more than 60% of U.S. citizen-defendants were detained pending trial by federal courts last year. But federal defendants virtually never fail to appear in court, and they are rarely arrested for new crimes while on pretrial release. And unlike state court systems, cash bail is …

1. The research and conservation community has successfully harnessed the wealth of ecological knowledge found in unprecedented volumes of citizen science (CS) data world-wide. However, few examples exist of the use of CS data to directly inform policy.
2. Current examples of applications of CS data mainly stem from programs that are restricted in scope (e.g. defined protocols, restricted sampling time frame), and the potential use of unrestricted CS data to inform policy remains largely untapped.
3. Here, we make a call for moving beyond questioning the reliability of CS data and present a case study of how the US …

Can There Be Too Much Specialization? Specialization In Specialized Courts, Melissa F. Wasserman, Jonathan D. Slack
Can There Be Too Much Specialization? Specialization In Specialized Courts, Melissa F. Wasserman, Jonathan D. Slack
Northwestern University Law Review
While modern society has embraced specialization, the federal judiciary continues to prize the generalist jurist. This disconnect is at the core of the growing debate on the optimal level of specialization in the judiciary. To date, this discussion has largely revolved around the creation of specialized courts. Opinion specialization, however, provides an alternative, underappreciated method to infuse specialization into the judiciary. In contrast to specialized courts, opinion specialization is understudied and undertheorized.
This Article makes two contributions to the literature. First, this Article theorizes whether opinion specialization is a desirable practice. It argues that the practice’s costs and benefits are …

Distribution And Trends Of Endemic Hawaiian Waterbirds, Eben H. Paxton, Kevin Brinck, Adonia Henry, Afsheen Siddiqi, Rachel Rounds, Jennifer Chutz
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Four endemic species of wetland-dependent waterbirds occur on the main Hawaiian Islands, all of which have experienced sharp population declines and are listed as endangered species. Twice per year, state-wide surveys are conducted to count waterbirds, but these surveys are evaluated only infrequently. We used a state-space approach to evaluate long-term (1986–2016) and short-term (2006–2016) trends and current distribution and abundance of endemic Hawaiian waterbirds. The most numerous species was the Ae‘o, or Hawaiian Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni), with a 5-year estimated average abundance of 1,932 individuals, followed by ‘Alae Ke‘oke‘o, or Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), …

Retrospective Analysis Of Bleeding Events After Central Venous Catheter Placement In Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Waqas Haque, Maria A. Alvarenga, Suchith Vuppala, Manasa Reddy, Ravi Sarode
MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
Background
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic disorder caused by severe deficiency of ADAMTS13. Platelets are transfused prophylactically in non-TTP patients for central venous catheter (CVC) with a count× 109/L to prevent bleeding. However, transfusing platelets in TTP prior to CVC placement remains controversial due to concern for arterial thrombosis and mortality. At our center, platelet transfusion is contraindicated in TTP, therefore, we analyzed data for bleeding complications following CVC placement.
Study Design and Methods
95 acute episodes of TTP were identified. Twenty-six episodes were excluded for insufficient documentation or no CVC placement. The charts of 69 remaining episodes …

Slow Walking In Individuals With Chronic Post-Stroke Hemiparesis: Speed Mediated Effects Of Gait Kinetics And Ankle Kinematics, Jing Nong Liang, Kai-Yu Ho, Yun-Ju Lee, Corey Ackley, Kiley Aki, Joshua Arias, Jassie Trinh
Physical Therapy Faculty Research
Post-stroke rehabilitation often aims to increase walking speeds, as faster walking is associated with improved functional status and quality of life. However, for successful community ambulation, ability to modulate (increase and decrease) walking speeds is more important than walking continuously at constant speeds. Increasing paretic propulsive forces to increase walking speed has been extensively examined; however, little is known about the mechanics of slow walking post-stroke. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the effects of increased and decreased walking speeds on post-stroke kinetics and ankle kinematics. Fifteen individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis and 15 non-neurologically impaired controls …

A computing device may detect user input, such as finger movements resembling typing on an invisible virtual keyboard in the air or on any surface, to enable typing. The computing device may use sensors (e.g., accelerometers, cameras, piezoelectric sensors, etc.) to detect the user’s finger movements, such as the user’s fingers moving through the air and/or contacting a surface. The computing device may then decode (or, in other words, convert, interpret, analyze, etc.) the detected finger movements to identify corresponding inputs representative of characters (e.g., alphanumeric characters, national characters, special characters, etc.). To reduce input errors, the computing device may …

Lantana camara L. (L. camara) is a perennial shrub that contains low amounts of alkaloids. In the present study, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were used to isolate positively charged alkaloids from the methanolic extract of L. camara leaves. The crude alkaloid was fractionated using HPLC to separate the highest peak of the alkaloid fraction (HPAF). The crude alkaloids (CA) and HPAF were tested for their antiproliferative effect against cancer cell lines (MCF-7, HCT-116, and HeLa) and endothelial cells line (EA.hy926) as a standard cell line. Antiangiogenic properties were examined using rat aortic ring assay. …
Third- And Fifth-Order Geometric Aberrations In Magnetic Exponential Lens Model For Object Magnetic Immersion, Aymen Amer Mr., Ahmad K. Ahmad Professor
Third- And Fifth-Order Geometric Aberrations In Magnetic Exponential Lens Model For Object Magnetic Immersion, Aymen Amer Mr., Ahmad K. Ahmad Professor
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
We numerically employ the differential algebraic technique to calculate the third and fifth-order geometric aberrations coefficients, which are derived by using the map method, of the magnetic exponential lens model. These coefficients are calculated for object magnetic immersion (OMI). The magnetic exponential model is used as an example for the magnetic round lens to calculate the coefficients. The numerical electron optical results are perfectly in match with the analytically results with a very small relative error (10-10- 10-12). The DA advantage technique is a very compendious, effective, proper, and accurate for analysis of electron optical aberration. …

Nanocellulose Sheets From Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches Treated With Naoh Solution, Farah Fahma, Faiza Ayu Lestari, Ika Amalia Kartika, Nurmalisa Lisdayana, Evi Savitri Iriani
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The objective of this study is to produce nanocellulose sheets from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs). Nanocellulose sheets from OPEFBs were prepared through the dewatering process using vacuum filtration. Subsequently, the produced sheets were treated with NaOH solution to improve the mechanical stability of their structure, causing them to be firm in water. The water absorption of nanocellulose sheet increased with increasing NaOH concentrations up to 20 wt%, increasing tensile strength, and Young’s modulus, but decreased when they were treated with 30 wt%. The diameter shrinkage of nanocellulose sheets was directly proportional to the NaOH concentration and soaking time. …
