Vegetation has been effectively monitored using remote sensing time-series vegetation index (VI) data for several decades. Drought monitoring has been a common application with algorithms tuned to capturing anomalous temporal and spatial vegetation patterns. Drought stress models, such as the Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDRI), often use VIs like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The EROS expedited Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrora-diometer (eMODIS)-based, 7-day NDVI composites are integral to the VegDRI. As MODIS satellite platforms (Terra and Aqua) approach mission end, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) presents an alternate NDVI source, with daily collection, similar band passes, and …

Cleaning Up China's Air: The Effectiveness Of The Eep Plan In Beijing, James R. Masterson
Cleaning Up China's Air: The Effectiveness Of The Eep Plan In Beijing, James R. Masterson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
China’s economy has developed rapidly in the past 40 years since the reform and opening up. However, China’s irrational economic structure, low efficiency of resource utilization and serious environmental pollution have become important factors restricting the long-term healthy development of China’s economy. More importantly, pollution issues in China seriously affect the development of the regime due to public concerns in terms of health issues. In 2014, senior government officials said publicly that China would “declare war on pollution.” Since then, air pollution has improved to a certain extent, with PM 2.5 levels falling 23.6 percent from 2013 to 2015, but …

Discussion Of “Is Group Testing Ready For Prime-Time In Disease Identification?” By Haber, Malinovsky, And Albert, Statistics In Medicine, 2021, Brad J. Biggerstaff
United States Public Health Resources
I congratulate the authors on an interesting, instructive, and timely paper. Certainly, including the testing for SARS-CoV-2 example in a paper on a topic—group testing—of wide interest during the current COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the relevance of the topic in public health and diagnostic medicine generally. But the thoughtful inclusion of the remaining examples—HIV, HPV, and cancer biomarker detection—illustrates that the issues considered are important even in less urgent times. In this note of discussion I will comment on two particular aspects in the paper that I found particularly informative, and then I will comment on two other, related areas that …

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of Legal Regulations And Social Consequences For Securing Data, Howard B. Goodman
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
There is a wide range of concerns and challenges related to stored data security – which range from privacy and management to operations readiness, These challenges span from financial to personal and public impact. With an abundance of regulations for the enforcement of data security and emerging requirements proposed every year, organizations cannot avoid the legal or social implications of inadequate data protection. Today, public spotlight and awareness are challenging organizations to enhance how data is protected more than at any other time. For this reason, organizations have made significant efforts to improve security.
When looking at precautions or changes, …

discipline practices can widen the opportunity gap for at-risk students (Baker & Coley, 2013; Black, 2016; Crosby et al., 2018; Gibson & Gibson, 2019; Mallett, 2016; McCarter, 2017; Porter, 2015; Williams et al., 2017). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student risk factors and exclusionary discipline rates. Identification of a significant relationship between exclusionary discipline and student risk factors could lead to an increased awareness of precertification and practicing educator professional development needs. Identification of a significant relationship between trauma-related risk factors and exclusionary discipline could lead to an awareness of exclusionary discipline alternatives more …

Cortical Representation And Excitability Increases For A Thenar Muscle Mediate Improvement In Short-Term Cellular Phone Text Messaging Ability, Anthony W. Meek, Joselyn Perez, Brach Poston, Zachary A. Riley
Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research
Cortical representations expand during skilled motor learning. We studied a unique model of motor learning with cellular phone texting, where the thumbs are used exclusively to interact with the device and the prominence of use can be seen where 3200 text messages are exchanged a month in the 18–24 age demographic. The purpose of the present study was to examine the motor cortex representation and input–output (IO) recruitment curves of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle of the thumb and the ADM muscle with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), relative to individuals’ texting abilities and short-term texting practice. Eighteen individuals performed …
Let Them Learn: Recognizing And Codifying A Design-Build Self-Critical Analysis Privilege In Texas, Christian Martinez
Let Them Learn: Recognizing And Codifying A Design-Build Self-Critical Analysis Privilege In Texas, Christian Martinez
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
Organizations often conduct probing self-studies to review internally existing policies, procedures, and business methods. Yet, despite an increasing social need for these studies, the Texas legislature has yet to construct a privilege designed to protect an organization from being harmed from these studies by adverse litigants. The self-critical analysis privilege, or SCAP, is an alluring, common law doctrine that protects the free flow of information sharing through an organization’s self-assessment. This Comment proposes a model statute for the codification of the SCAP for the consideration of the Texas legislature. This model statute is not a general codification of the privilege. …

Survey On Quantum Circuit Compilation For Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Computers: Artificial Intelligence To Heuristics, Janusz Kusyk, Samah Mohamed Saeed, Muharrem Umit Uyar
Publications and Research
Computationally expensive applications, including machine learning, chemical simulations, and financial modeling, are promising candidates for noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) computers. In these problems, one important challenge is mapping a quantum circuit onto NISQ hardware while satisfying physical constraints of an underlying quantum architecture. Quantum circuit compilation (QCC) aims to generate feasible mappings such that a quantum circuit can be executed in a given hardware platform with acceptable confidence in outcomes. Physical constraints of a NISQ computer change frequently, requiring QCC process to be repeated often. When a circuit cannot directly be executed on a quantum hardware due to its …

Self-Protection In Cyberspace: Assessing The Processual Relationship Between Thoughtfully Reflective Decision Making, Protection Motivation Theory, Cyber Hygiene, And Victimization, C. Jordan Howell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study, using structural equation modeling, assesses the processual relationship between thoughtfully reflective decision making (TRDM), theoretical constructs derived from protection motivation theory (PMT), cyber hygiene, and online victimization to determine the cognitive decision-making process that leads to the adoption of online self-protective behaviors, which reduces the occurrence of victimization experiences. Findings, derived from a general sample of Internet users in the United States, reveal: (1) engagement in cyber hygiene practices, as a form of target hardening, decreases Internet users’ experiences with online victimization; (2) thoughtfully reflective decision makers, in the face of cyber threats, develop higher threat appraisals …

Aerosol sulfate is a major component of submicron particulate matter (PM1). Sulfate can be present as inorganic (mainly ammonium sulfate, AS) or organosulfate (OS). Although OS is thought to be a smaller fraction of total sulfate in most cases, recent literature argues that this may not be the case in more polluted environments. Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers (AMSs) measure total submicron sulfate, but it has been difficult to apportion AS vs. OS as the detected ion fragments are similar. Recently, two new methods have been proposed to quantify OS separately from AS with AMS data. We use observations collected during …

Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And Rotationally Supported Galaxies, Gabriele U. Varieschi
Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And Rotationally Supported Galaxies, Gabriele U. Varieschi
Physics Faculty Works
We continue our analysis of Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity (NFDG), an extension of the standard laws of Newtonian gravity to lower dimensional spaces including those with fractional (i.e., non-integer) dimension. We apply our model to three rotationally supported galaxies: NGC 7814 (Bulge-Dominated Spiral), NGC 6503 (Disk Dominated Spiral), and NGC 3741 (Gas-Dominated Dwarf). As was done in the general cases of spherically-symmetric and axially-symmetric structures, which were studied in previous work on the subject, we examine a possible connection between NFDG and Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), a leading alternative gravity model which explains the observed properties of these galaxies without requiring …
