Late Eocene Record Of Hydrology And Temperature From Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, Emily J. Tibbett, Howie D. Scher, Sophie Warny, Jessica E. Tierney, Sandra Passchier, Sarah J. Feakins

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) marks the onset of Antarctic glaciation at 33.7 Ma. Although the benthic oxygen isotope record defines the major continental ice sheet expansion, recent sedimentary and geochemical evidence suggests the presence of earlier ephemeral ice sheets. Sediment cores from Ocean Drilling Program Legs 119 and 188 in Prydz Bay provide an archive of conditions in a major drainage system of East Antarctica. We study biomarker and microfossil evidence to discern how the vegetation and climate shifted between 36 and 33 Ma. Pollen was dominated by reworked Permian Glossopterid gymnosperms; however, penecontemporaneous Eocene pollen assemblages indicate that some …

Efficiency Of The Soccer Betting Market, Griffin Fitzgerald Apr 2021

Efficiency Of The Soccer Betting Market, Griffin Fitzgerald

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

To make above average profits in a financial market, investors take advantage of abnormalities or arbitrage opportunities. These arbitrage opportunities are dependent upon whether market prices reflect all information publicly available to investors. In an efficient market, these arbitrage opportunities do not exist for long, and prices should swiftly and completely update with the release of any relevant information. Testing the efficiency of financial markets is difficult because it is almost impossible to ignore information leakage. Instead, I tested the efficiency of the soccer betting market to respond to the news of a goal, the most influential match event on …

The Destructive Draw Of Historical Determinism, Jared Russell Apr 2021

The Destructive Draw Of Historical Determinism, Jared Russell

Honors Projects

Historical determinism can be understood as the idea that future events are predestined, usually by an esoteric or economic force. This is accompanied by the belief that there is a certain group of enlightened people that know what this future outcome will be. These people are also often convinced that it is their duty to help bring about this historical synthesis. While there are different iterations of historical determinism that can be critiqued, this paper will be focusing on some of the most influential. Specifically, the connection between a historical determinism as imagined by Hegel which was then adapted into …

Adsorption And Surface Diffusion Of Metals On Α-Al2O3 For Advanced Manufacturing Applications, Austin Biaggne, Gregory Noble, Lan Li

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The adsorption and diffusion of Mo and Nb adatoms on the α-Al2O3 (0001) surface were explored using density functional theory-based methods. Adsorption energies of Mo and Nb adatoms at minima sites on the surface were determined. Mo and Nb adatoms prefer to adsorb to the same locations on the surface, and larger adsorption energies calculated for Nb compared to Mo indicate that Nb adatom-surface interactions are stronger than Mo. Using minima adsorption sites as initial and final locations for surface diffusion, energy barriers for diffusion were calculated using the nudged elastic band method. Overall, Mo and …

Associations Among Academic Motivational Styles, Purpose In Life, And Depressive Symptoms In College Students, Linnea V. Anderson

Honors Theses

Students vary in three motivational styles when pursuing academic attainment: (1) amotivational style (lack of motivation), (2) extrinsic style (contingent upon external influences), and (3) intrinsic style (dependent upon internal influences) (Froiland, 2018). Research has demonstrated that individuals who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to report higher rates of meaning and purpose in life (Chalofsky & Krishna, 2009) and higher rates of psychological well-being (Huang & Wu, 2016). While this relationship between intrinsic motivation, purpose in life, and psychological well-being has been supported, research has yet to explore the relationship between extrinsic motivation, purpose in life, and psychological well-being …

Candidates For L’Ecriture Feminine: Analyses Of Austen’S Pride And Prejudice, Woolf’S Night And Day, And Morrison’S Sula, Brooklyn J. Jongeling Apr 2021

Candidates For L’Ecriture Feminine: Analyses Of Austen’S Pride And Prejudice, Woolf’S Night And Day, And Morrison’S Sula, Brooklyn J. Jongeling

Honors Thesis

This thesis discusses Hélène Cixous’ ideas on feminine literature, as expressed in her article, “The Laugh of Medusa,” and attempts to apply the goals that she sets out for what feminine literature must look like in order to develop the literary cannon to the novel. In an attempt to pull away from traditional patriarchal images and expectations of feminine lifestyles, I join Cixous’ call for the marginalized to inscribe their voices into the cannon for themselves, and argue that representation of such images in literature is necessary to the development of our biased perceptions to more authentically represent typically marginalized …

Indigenous Peoples' Trust In Police: Multi-Jurisdictional Issues And The Effect On Reporting, Anna R. Doering

Honors Thesis

The crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) has occurred for centuries. The current structure of the criminal justice system relies on trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and citizens to combat such crises. The purpose of this research project is to assess how, if at all, Indigenous peoples’ trust in police and willingness to report at the tribal, state, and federal levels impact MMIP. These two dependent variables were assessed using survey results from Indigenous peoples 18 and older. Discussion will focus on how these variables impact MMIP moving forward.

Chimeric Ideals, Carter Hoffer

Honors Thesis

What comes next and how do you move on from something that seems all-encompassing? These are just a couple of the questions author Carter Hoffer asks within his original play, Chimeric Ideals. Inspired by a nation rife with gun violence and no plan to reign it in, Chimeric Ideals follows the story of Percy, Adam, Jed, and Henry immediately after the most traumatic experience of their young lives, exploring the difficulty of healing in a world where mental health is a taboo subject, and its' sufferers sometimes refuse to admit to even having a problem. Originally conceived as a …

Standardized Tests: Effects On Science Education And Diversity In Science, Rachel A. Rucker Apr 2021

Standardized Tests: Effects On Science Education And Diversity In Science, Rachel A. Rucker

Honors Thesis

Standardized tests are ubiquitous in the American educational system. The excessive use of standardized tests has led to a decrease in taught content and has pushed teachers at the high school level to adopt less effective teaching styles that are also extremely common for introductory STEM courses at the undergraduate level. The heavy reliance on ACT and SAT scores for acceptance into college is misplaced, as the ACT/SAT are poor predictors of STEM college graduation. Also, underrepresented students (women, racial minorities, and lower socioeconomic groups) are disproportionately impacted by the heavy use of standardized tests. These students tend to score …

Influence Of Social Rejection And Borderline Personality Features On Emotion Perception, Ashmita Ghosh Apr 2021

Influence Of Social Rejection And Borderline Personality Features On Emotion Perception, Ashmita Ghosh

Honors Thesis

Deficits in interpersonal functioning are a core component of borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is generally associated with misperceptions of social cues including a tendency to perceive others as unfair and rejecting. There is evidence that individuals with subsyndromal borderline personality features also experience these negative outcomes. Furthermore, there is mixed evidence regarding whether individuals with borderline personality disorder have enhanced abilities or deficits in accurately identifying emotions. Therefore, this project examines how social context and borderline personality features affects an individual’s ability to accurately perceive emotions. Participants were randomly assigned to a Cyberball group (inclusion, rejection, overinclusion) and …

Fostering Preschool Emergent Literacy Development Through Parent Involvement In The Preschool Classroom, Jamie S. Devries Apr 2021

Fostering Preschool Emergent Literacy Development Through Parent Involvement In The Preschool Classroom, Jamie S. Devries

Masters Projects

Kindergarten readiness standards have increased drastically over the years due to government legislation and a push for student achievement growth. This has led preschool teachers to feel a sense of urgency to prepare students as best they can for the increasingly rigorous academic demands of kindergarten. Preschool teachers are calling upon all possible resources to help prepare students for kindergarten, specifically parents. Research supports parent involvement in both the home and preschool classroom for emergent literacy growth. However, many parents, who likely would be keen to help, are not aware of how much the expectations for kindergarten readiness have changed …

Fostering A Sense Of Belonging In Students Who Are At-Risk For Suspension Or Expulsion: A Small-Group Intervention For Middle School Students, Shayna M. Brooks Apr 2021

Fostering A Sense Of Belonging In Students Who Are At-Risk For Suspension Or Expulsion: A Small-Group Intervention For Middle School Students, Shayna M. Brooks

Masters Projects

Research shows that students who are at-risk for suspension or expulsion lack a sense of belonging at school. A sense of belonging is an essential contribution to success at school and in life, and therefore, students who lack belonging are unable to reach their full potential. Students who are suspended or expelled are also more likely to drop out of school and be incarcerated as adults. Despite this research, many schools still have zero-tolerance policies in place that result in suspension and expulsion of students. Instead of teaching students the skills they need to be successful, suspension deprives students of …

Addressing Student Discipline Discrepancies Through Restorative Justice And Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports, Josh Jackson Apr 2021

Addressing Student Discipline Discrepancies Through Restorative Justice And Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports, Josh Jackson

Masters Projects

Schools throughout the country have relied on suspension and expulsion to create ‘safer’ schools, free from harm and distraction. This trend of reliance on suspension started in the mid-1990s, reaching its peak in 2011. This happened as a result of the implementation zero-tolerance discipline policies nearly nationwide. Zero-tolerance called for specific punishments for clearly outlined unsafe behaviors to start, but as years progressed, zero-tolerance in the form of suspension became a catch all for all types of behavior. In this shift toward suspension as a dominate form for behavior correction, Black students have been suspended at an alarming rate in …

Bayesian Nonparametric Model For Functional Data Analysis, Tahmidul Islam Apr 2021

Bayesian Nonparametric Model For Functional Data Analysis, Tahmidul Islam

Theses and Dissertations

Functional data analysis (FDA) experienced a burst of growth after Ramsay and Silverman published their textbook in 1997. Functional data analysis interests researchers because of the challenges it adds to well-established multivariate analysis. Unlike finite dimensional random vectors, we visualize infinite dimensional random functions; for example, curves, images, brain scans, etc. A vast amount of literature have been dedicated to developing models for functional data. The ideas are mostly based on basis function representations and kernel-based nonparametric methods. In this dissertation, we propose a Bayesian treatment of nonparametric functional data analysis by introducing a Gaussian process (GP) over the space …

Instrumentation And Experimentation Development For Robotic Systems, Tristan Kyzer Apr 2021

Instrumentation And Experimentation Development For Robotic Systems, Tristan Kyzer

Theses and Dissertations

Localization of robotic systems is a necessity for control of robotic systems and often requires the use of costly sensors and equipment onboard the robot or installed within a facility. GPS or GNSS sensors are effective for localizing robots in GPSaccessible environments, but do not work as well in dense urban areas or inside fully enclosed buildings, such as factories or warehouses. Sensors such as LiDAR can be costly and require substantial experience and knowledge to utilize as well as potential changes to infrastructure for use. Computer vision-based localization systems offer potential as a localization solution for various applications. A …

Conservation Of Polyester-Urethane Magnetic Audio Tapes And Discrimination Of Textile Fiber Dyes Using Spectroscopy And Chemometrics, Nilmini Hemanthika Ratnasena Apr 2021

Conservation Of Polyester-Urethane Magnetic Audio Tapes And Discrimination Of Textile Fiber Dyes Using Spectroscopy And Chemometrics, Nilmini Hemanthika Ratnasena

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores and discusses conservation of magnetic audio tapes and discrimination of fiber dyes employing spectroscopic techniques and chemometrics.

Conservation of polyester urethane magnetic audio tapes has become a major challenge since they are susceptible to degradation via hydrolysis. The world’s modern cultural history is vastly recorded in this media, and now conservationists need a non-destructive technique to determine the playability status of these tapes. Once conservationists identify degraded tapes, they can be subjected to the baking process. This process temporarily reverses hydrolysis and provides enough time to digitize tapes, preserving information for future generations. The first three chapters …
