Privacyprimer: Towards Privacy-Preserving Episodic Memory Support For Older Adults, Thivya Kandappu, Vigneshwaran Subbaraju, Qianli Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Built-in pervasive cameras have become an integral part of mobile/wearable devices and enabled a wide range of ubiquitous applications with their ability to be "always-on". In particular, life-logging has been identified as a means to enhance the quality of life of older adults by allowing them to reminisce about their own life experiences. However, the sensitive images captured by the cameras threaten individuals' right to have private social lives and raise concerns about privacy and security in the physical world. This threat gets worse when image recognition technologies can link images to people, scenes, and objects, hence, implicitly and unexpectedly …

Iotbox: Sandbox Mining To Prevent Interaction Threats In Iot Systems, Hong Jin Kang, Sheng Qin Sim, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Internet of Things (IoT) apps provide great convenience but exposes us to new safety threats. Unlike traditional software systems, threats may emerge from the joint behavior of multiple apps. While prior studies use handcrafted safety and security policies to detect these threats, these policies may not anticipate all usages of the devices and apps in a smart home, causing false alarms. In this study, we propose to use the technique of mining sandboxes for securing an IoT environment. After a set of behaviors are analyzed from a bundle of apps and devices, a sandbox is deployed, which enforces that previously …

Generalist Ceos And Audit Pricing, Zhiming Ma, Rencheng Wang, Kaitang Zhou Apr 2021

Generalist Ceos And Audit Pricing, Zhiming Ma, Rencheng Wang, Kaitang Zhou

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We analyze the consequences of a firm hiring a generalist CEO in terms of the audit fees paid by the firm. We find that audit fees of clients with generalist CEOs are higher than those of clients with specialist CEOs. This relation is robust to considering managerial ability, other CEO characteristics, various fixed effects, instrumental variables, and change analyses. We further show that fee differences are larger for firms with weaker monitoring and higher corporate litigation risks. Through path analysis, we find that both client business risk and misreporting risk contribute to the fee difference. Finally, we find that auditors …

Gearing Up Higher Education For A More Resilient Future Post Covid-19, Themin Suwardy, Avantika Tomar, Neemee Das

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Education is premised on an institution’s ability to gather faculty and students, and to provide space and opportunities to produce and disseminate knowledge. Besides its direct medical and healthcare impact, COVID-19 has been a significant disruptor to the higher education sector. This paper highlights its impact on international student mobility, international collaborations, and the delivery of teaching and learning. To successfully ride out the recovery, institutions will need to build resilient strategies to operate in the new, post-COVID normal by engaging with stakeholders, ensuring financial sustainability, and embracing purposeful digital transformation in university operations, teaching, and learning.

Efficient Ethical Principles For Making Fatal Choices, W. Kip Viscusi Apr 2021

Efficient Ethical Principles For Making Fatal Choices, W. Kip Viscusi

Notre Dame Law Review

Resource allocations of all kinds inevitably encounter financial constraints, making it infeasible to make financially unbounded commitments. Such resource constraints arise in almost all health and safety risk contexts, which has led to a regulatory oversight process to ascertain whether the expected benefits of major regulations outweigh the costs. The economic approach to monetizing health and safety risks is well established and is based on the value of a statistical life (“VSL”). Government agencies use these values reflecting attitudes toward small changes in risk to monetize the largest benefit component of regulations—that dealing with mortality risks. This procedure consequently bases …

Putting The Equity Back Into Intellectual Property Remedies, Henry E. Smith Apr 2021

Putting The Equity Back Into Intellectual Property Remedies, Henry E. Smith

Notre Dame Law Review

Within the realm of remedies, intellectual property remedies have presented particular difficulties, and in intellectual property law, controversy has focused on remedies. Concerns about holdup in intellectual property have even begun to lead to innovations in the law of remedies itself. Many of the difficulties and controversies raging now center around remedies that are “equitable.” In this Essay I argue that recovering a major function of equity—as meta-law— helps us understand these problems and to offer potential solutions. Meta-law is a higher order intervention when regular law fails, in contexts of high complexity and uncertainty, often stemming from polycentricity, conflicting …

Stock Market Value And Deal Value In Appraisal Proceedings, Robert T. Miller Apr 2021

Stock Market Value And Deal Value In Appraisal Proceedings, Robert T. Miller

Notre Dame Law Review

This Essay considers two methods of valuing public companies in the context of appraisal proceedings under section 262 of the Delaware General Corporation Law (DGCL). The first method relies on the efficient capital markets hypothesis (ECMH) and values the company based on the market price of its shares before any public disclosure of the possibility of a transaction (the unaffected market price). The second relies on the price that an unrelated party agrees to pay to acquire the company in a transaction negotiated at arm’s length after a robust sales process by the selling board (the deal price). Both the …

Valuing Black And Female Lives: A Proposal For Incorporating Agency Vsl Into Tort Damages, Catherine M. Sharkey Apr 2021

Valuing Black And Female Lives: A Proposal For Incorporating Agency Vsl Into Tort Damages, Catherine M. Sharkey

Notre Dame Law Review

Federal agencies adopt a uniform VSL (value of statistical life)—one that does not vary according to demographic characteristics—in conducting cost-benefit analyses in connection with regulatory policy decisions. In sharp juxtaposition, the use of race- and gender-based statistics on wages and work-life expectancy in calculating tort wrongful death damage awards is an entrenched practice among forensic economists who serve as expert witnesses in tort litigation. The conventional use of race- and gender-specific economic data concerning wages and work-life expectancy in calculating tort damages leads to unjustifiable disparities in awards for blacks and women. Young female and minority tort victims bear the …

The Catholic Church And The Paycheck Protection Program: Assessing Nondiscrimination After Trinity Lutheran And Espinoza, Elizabeth Totzke Apr 2021

The Catholic Church And The Paycheck Protection Program: Assessing Nondiscrimination After Trinity Lutheran And Espinoza, Elizabeth Totzke

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note argues the inclusion of houses of worship and the subsequent dispersal of PPP funds to the Catholic Church was explicitly constitutional. Applying the lens of the Supreme Court’s recently announced nondiscrimination principle, this Note considers the ramifications of the SBA’s official policy and explores the constitutional justification for the SBA’s ad hoc PPP policy. In fact, under the nondiscrimination principle, this Note concludes that the SBA’s policy shift was not just constitutionally permissible, but probably constitutionally required.

Environmental Permits: Public Property Rights In Private Lands And The Extraction And Redistribution Of Private Wealth, Jason S. Johnston Apr 2021

Environmental Permits: Public Property Rights In Private Lands And The Extraction And Redistribution Of Private Wealth, Jason S. Johnston

Notre Dame Law Review

Back in 1995, Professor Epstein famously termed such use of the permit power a “racket,” and as observed very recently by Dave Owen, still today many landowners and conservative critics would agree with the Supreme Court’s description of the process (in Nollan v. California Coastal Commission) as an “out-and-out plan of extortion.” However extortionate such deals may be, regulators with permit power may require landowners to bargain with them before developing their land or else face legal sanctions. This Essay explores in more detail how such bargaining has played out under two of the most important permit regimes in …

The Power Of Inclusion: Deconstructing “Normality” In Primary Education, Madison Smith 21 Apr 2021

The Power Of Inclusion: Deconstructing “Normality” In Primary Education, Madison Smith 21

Honor Scholar Theses

The goal of this thesis is to critically analyze the structures currently present within the education system that exclude individuals possessing certain brains and bodies from the socially constructed “norm.” The lens of critical disability studies is utilized to shed light on the spatial, curricular, historical, and disciplinary elements of the education system as we know it. Specifically, this thesis focuses on the primary education classroom, since students solidify many of their biases and schemas about the world and people around them at this juncture. After reviewing the ableist rhetoric that manifests itself in schools and society as a result …

Learning Discriminative And Efficient Attention For Person Re-Identification Using Agglomerative Clustering Frameworks, Kshitij Nikhal

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recent advancements like multiple contextual analysis, attention mechanisms, distance-aware optimization, and multi-task guidance have been widely used for supervised person re-identification (ReID), but the implementation and effects of such methods in unsupervised person ReID frameworks are non-trivial and unclear, respectively. Moreover, with increasing size and complexity of image- and video-based ReID datasets, manual or semi-automated annotation procedures for supervised ReID are becoming labor intensive and cost prohibitive, which is undesirable especially considering the likelihood of annotation errors increase with scale/complexity of data collections. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new iterative clustering framework that incorporates (a) two attention architectures that learn …

With A Female Vice President In Office, Has Media Gender-Bias Left The Presidential Campaign Trail? The Short Answer Is No, And The Reason Why Is Deep Rooted, Nora Tarte Apr 2021

With A Female Vice President In Office, Has Media Gender-Bias Left The Presidential Campaign Trail? The Short Answer Is No, And The Reason Why Is Deep Rooted, Nora Tarte

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects

An examination of treatment in the media of female vice presidential candidates—Geraldine Ferraro (1984), Sarah Palin (2008) and Kamala Harris (2020)—surfaces a trend of gender bias perpetuated by subtly sexist language in all three campaigns. While society has made strides in equality in the 36 years between campaigns, the media treatment of Vice President Kamala Harris is not that far removed from the treatment of Geraldine Ferraro. The bias exists both overtly and subtly with obvious sexist language and more subtle forms of sexist language in coverage doled out by top media outlets, but subtle sexism is what often flies …
