Saga Beyond The Gate: Chapter One, The Coming Of The Gate Ghost, Tristan B. Miller May 2021

Saga Beyond The Gate: Chapter One, The Coming Of The Gate Ghost, Tristan B. Miller

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

“Saga Beyond the Gate: Chapter One, the Coming of the Gate Ghost” explores performance sculpture used as religious ritual. My work emphasizes ritual, creation myths, relics, physical manifestations of lived religion, and the power of narrative belief. One often turns to religion, science, or spirituality, to seek answers to questions about being a conscious entity, and one’s journey to the end. This saga uses scripts from all three of these schools of thought, placing the world of the Gate Ghost into tangible reality, as a play on a stage. Artefacts represent objects of power and mystery. Characters embody morality tales, …

Increasing Transgender-Inclusive Behaviors Via Self-Monitoring, Abigail Kaylyn Petronelli May 2021

Increasing Transgender-Inclusive Behaviors Via Self-Monitoring, Abigail Kaylyn Petronelli

Theses and Dissertations

Within behavior analysis there is an increasing demand for research to create inclusive organizational cultures. To create a culture of inclusion, it is necessary to engage in inclusive behaviors towards individuals of varying race, gender, and sexual orientation. Despite the rising social demand and call for diversity in research, there are still few studies which apply an intervention to improve inclusive behaviors. One target of inclusive behaviors is proper pronoun use towards individuals who are transgender or gender non-conforming (TGNC). To date, there is only one published article regarding TGNC topics, which explored a TGNC-inclusive tool (Leland & Stockwell, 2019). …

The Effects Of A Process Analysis Diagnostic Tool On The Accuracy Of Identifying Process Level Disconnects, Vincent Alexander Bello May 2021

The Effects Of A Process Analysis Diagnostic Tool On The Accuracy Of Identifying Process Level Disconnects, Vincent Alexander Bello

Theses and Dissertations

Research in the area of Organizational Behavior management (OBM) has demonstrated the effectiveness of behavior analytic interventions on performance in workplace settings. Despite the utility of these procedures, functional assessments used to identify variables maintaining performance deficits have been underutilized and underreported in the OBM literature. Research on functional assessment has been particularly scarce in the area of behavioral systems analysis (BSA), a subfield of OBM that focuses on changing organizational performance through the individual, process, and organizational levels. Without empirical validation of preintervention assessment in BSA, it is unclear to what extent these assessments contribute to the effectiveness of …

Barriers To Succession Planning: A Case Study Of Atlanta Nonprofit Organizations, Adonnis J. Jules May 2021

Barriers To Succession Planning: A Case Study Of Atlanta Nonprofit Organizations, Adonnis J. Jules

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Succession planning is not a common practice among nonprofit organizations, despite support for its effectiveness in supporting leadership development and providing organizational stability during a planned or unplanned transition. Nonprofits have acknowledged that their leadership ranks are thin, and a leadership transition tends to bring challenges to the organizations when vacancies need to be filled. Barriers exist that prevent nonprofits from engaging in succession planning, but little research has examined the nature of these barriers. This study focused on nonprofit organizations across four different industry sectors to determine the extent of their succession planning efforts and the barriers that exist …

Pattern Based Classification Of Chronic Kidney Disease Patients, Melissa Megan Moreno Cole May 2021

We apply a pattern-based classification method to identify clinical and genomic features associated with the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). We analyze the African-American Study of Chronic Kidney Disease with Hypertension (AASK) dataset and construct a decision-tree classification model, consisting 15 combinatorial patterns of clinical features and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), seven of which are associated with slow progression and eight with rapid progression of renal disease among AASK patients. We identify four clinical features and two SNPs that can accurately predict CKD progression. These features are validated with using sophisticated machine learning techniques including Random Forest, Nearest Neighbor, …

Stability Results For Special Solutions Of Scalar-Field Equations With Variable Coeffcients, Mashael Ibrahiem Alammari May 2021

Stability Results For Special Solutions Of Scalar-Field Equations With Variable Coeffcients, Mashael Ibrahiem Alammari

Theses and Dissertations

We study the long-time behavior of general semilinear scalar-field equations on the real line with variable coefficients in the linear terms. In the first part of the dissertation, we take the coefficients to be uniformly small, but slowly decaying, perturbations of a constant-coefficient operator. We are motivated by the question of how these perturbations of the equation may change the stability properties of kink solutions (one-dimensional topological solitons). We prove existence of a stationary kink solution in our setting, and perform a detailed spectral analysis of the corresponding linearized operator, based on perturbing the linearized operator around the constant-coefficient kink. …

Multi-Degree Of Freedom Position And Attitude Control Of Rings Dipoles Using Electromagnetic Forces And Torques, David Andres Alvarez May 2021

Multi-Degree Of Freedom Position And Attitude Control Of Rings Dipoles Using Electromagnetic Forces And Torques, David Andres Alvarez

Theses and Dissertations

Satellite formation flight (SFF) is likely to transform and advance the scope of space missions in the near future. Some considerable benefits of SFF to a mission include robustness, adaptability, and potential cost savings. However, satellite formations face a fuel expenditure issue: the more spacecraft there are to control, the more fuel will be expended on alignment and maneuvering. A solution to this problem is Electromagnetic Formation Flight (EMFF), which is the application of conductive coils in producing electromagnetic fields that can interact with the fields of other coils in a formation to exchange forces and torques. With three orthogonal …

Impact Of Antecedent Wetness And Rainfall Spatial Variability On Design Floods, Rachael Nicole Mcmahon May 2021

Impact Of Antecedent Wetness And Rainfall Spatial Variability On Design Floods, Rachael Nicole Mcmahon

Theses and Dissertations

In the absence of long hydrologic records, water engineering design application rely primarily on the concept of design storms and subsequently design floods. However, despite the long-lasting use of these approaches there are several aspects that merit careful consideration and possibly revision. Representation of spatial variability of rainfall extremes in design storms has relied primarily on the use of area reduction factors that while useful, they do not represent realistic patterns of flood inducing storms. Furthermore, the impact of antecedent wetness on the transformation of design storms to design floods is often neglected. In this work we carry out a …

Inverse Methods For Near-Real Time Estimation Of Surface Heat Flux In Thermal Protection Systems For Space Vehicles, Obinna Oluchukwu Ugochukwu Uyanna May 2021

Inverse Methods For Near-Real Time Estimation Of Surface Heat Flux In Thermal Protection Systems For Space Vehicles, Obinna Oluchukwu Ugochukwu Uyanna

Theses and Dissertations

With the increased goal of manned explorations to outer space, safety during the atmospheric entry/reentry process is paramount as the incident heat fluxes on the surface of vehicle can reach critical values. Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) are therefore essential components in space vehicles as they ensure the safety and protection of the payload and cargo. In order to ensure improved active control capabilities and prolonged used of the vehicle, TPS surface conditions need to be known and determined. Since direct measurement of the surface heat flux using sensors is not feasible, one alternative involves the use of temperature sensors located …

Effects Of Precessional Forcing In The Early Stages Of The 100-K World, Molly Kingston May 2021

Effects Of Precessional Forcing In The Early Stages Of The 100-K World, Molly Kingston

Theses and Dissertations

Much of what we know about the Andes today comes from studying a heavily human-manufactured landscape. However, before the presence of human modification in this system (~13,000 years ago), past interglacial and glacial cycles, influenced by changes in Earth cycles (eccentricity, obliquity, and precession), were the cause of major landscape re-organization. The variability in intensity and duration of these events and the probable response of the plant community is not well understood. Very few records in South America extend far enough back in time to capture these changes. Those records that do exist, lack an independent chronology and instead rely …

Ukranian Protestants’ Communicative Responses To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Maksym Balaklytskyi, Petro Kotliarov, Viacheslav Korchuk

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article considers the reaction of Ukrainian Protestants to the Covid-19 pandemic. Most important for Protestant theologians was a discussion of the impact and consequences of the pandemic on church life. Most Protestants agreed to a hybrid model of church worship: online-offline as a manifestation of an open reaction to the changes that resulted from the introduction of state quarantine restrictions. During the pandemic, Ukrainian Protestants managed to move away from the established model that the church is a building and to accept the paradigm of the Church as the Body of Christ. Under limited conditions, digital Protestant theology began …

The Principal’S Leadership Impact Utilizing Distributed Leadership Practices That Drive School Improvement, Dr. Holly Grubbs May 2021

The Principal’S Leadership Impact Utilizing Distributed Leadership Practices That Drive School Improvement, Dr. Holly Grubbs

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

Educational leadership is a major factor in achieving the goals of state and federal policymakers centered on raising student achievement for all students. Before, the focus was on how the principal is managing the school, and now it is about the process, procedures and structures, and systems in place that drive instructional improvement. With the increase of federal legislation, a principal's instructional leadership is measured by student academic achievement (Van Roekel, 2008). The assumption of the federal, state, and local policies is that instructional leadership is evident on the campus to improve schools. Consequently, there is a problem in American …

Accent Modification And Identity: A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Experiences Of International Students And Immigrants/Refugees, Gabriela Masztalerz

Undergraduate Honors Theses

As immigration rates within the United States increase, the prevalence of speech varying from Standard American English (SAE) continues to grow as well; sub sequentially, many immigrants experience social, personal, and professional obstacles attached to their nonnative speech that can result in feelings of cultural isolation. Accent modification has quickly become a solution for individuals wanting to assimilate themselves into a new culture by adopting the phonemic and pragmatic structures of the regional language, essentially reducing personal discomfort connected with speech; however, those who strongly correlate their accent to their identity may regard the therapy as an unnecessary means of …

Understanding How High Levels Of Noise Affect The Equine Auditory System, Shelby Ann Brown May 2021

Understanding How High Levels Of Noise Affect The Equine Auditory System, Shelby Ann Brown

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mounted shooting is becoming a very popular sport within the equestrian community, exposing many horses to extreme levels of noise that the animals would not be exposed to otherwise. I selected this project because it is important for me to know how this hobby that I personally enjoy is impacting the health and well-being of my equine partners. Veterinarians can provide an elementary answer by clapping and checking for a physical reaction. However, that does not tell the client much other than the animal responded to one auditory cue. It is important to understand how firearm exposure could affect equine …

The Effect Of Head Size On Bone Conduction Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response In Canines, Amanda Stone May 2021

The Effect Of Head Size On Bone Conduction Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response In Canines, Amanda Stone

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) is the gold standard for testing the auditory system in many animals, including canines. The procedure involves measuring electrical responses that occur at various locations along the auditory pathway and brainstem. Electrical activity occurs as a result of auditory stimulation, presented either via air conduction or bone conduction, and can be measured via small subdermal electrodes. Since this method measures a physiological response to sound, a behavioral response from the animal is not required, resulting in an objective assessment of that animal’s auditory function. Previous studies have been conducted, namely Kemper et al. (2013), …

The Use Of Otoacoustic Emissions In Clinical Diagnosis Of Hearing Loss In Canines, Morgan Ashby May 2021

The Use Of Otoacoustic Emissions In Clinical Diagnosis Of Hearing Loss In Canines, Morgan Ashby

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Otoacoustic emissions are an essential part of the audiology test battery, especially for patients who cannot appropriately respond during subjective tests. Otoacoustic emissions provide information regarding the function of the inner ear, specifically the outer hair cells within cochlea. This testing has been done previously in canines in laboratory settings and has shown to accurately diagnose hearing loss in canines verified by brainstem auditory evoked response. There are currently no established protocols, which means no clinical normative data could be established and utilized. The purpose of this project was to review the use of otoacoustic emissions in humans and canines …
