The Influence Of Student Disciplinary Participation In Post-Secondary Education On Career Decision Self-Efficacy, Jerry S. Collins May 2021

The Influence Of Student Disciplinary Participation In Post-Secondary Education On Career Decision Self-Efficacy, Jerry S. Collins

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

College disciplinary issues may affect students’ education and career plans similar to academic issues, yet not enough research has been conducted to analyze this subject area. Students who engage in a disciplinary process for violating a university’s code of conduct may be subject to sanctions deemed appropriate to help them learn from the experience and enhance their personal development during college. However, these students may not understand their behaviors’ potential impact on their desired career goals. Society continues to place increasing demands on more important career realization for students. Nevertheless, disciplinary education may not be adequate to help students genuinely …

Fingerprint Classification Using Transfer Learning Technique, Aseel H. Aloweiwi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Fingerprints play a significant role in many sectors. Nowadays, fingerprints are used for identification purposes in criminal investigations. They are also used as an authentication method since they are considered more secure than passwords. Fingerprint sensors are already widely deployed in many devices, including mobile phones and smart locks. Criminals try to compromise biometric fingerprint systems by purposely altering their fingerprints or entering fake ones. Therefore, it is critical to design and develop a highly accurate fingerprint classification. However, some fingerprint datasets are small and not sufficient to train a neural network. Thus, transfer learning is utilized. A large Sokoto …

Effects Of Inducible Camp Early Repressor (Icer) On Herpes Simplex Virus -1 (Hsv-1) Replication, Rosalina Caba

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

While inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER) is known for many roles, including inhibition of anti-apoptosis transcription and regulation of hormone signaling in human / animals, little is known of the role of ICER when interacting with viral cAMP responsive elements (CREs). Prior to this study, CRE sites were found in a variety of human viruses, in locations relating to DNA binding, DNA replication, and latency. A gel shift assay confirmed that ICER can bind to viral CRE sequences, and a reporter gene assay demonstrated that the presence of ICER on a viral promoter upregulates viral expression.

In an attempt to …

Attribute Framing Effect As A Function Of Selective Auditory Frequency Amplification, Nicole Marie Desimone May 2021

Attribute Framing Effect As A Function Of Selective Auditory Frequency Amplification, Nicole Marie Desimone

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

A set of cognitive biases that have been associated with functional asymmetry of the brain’s hemispheres are framing effects. The attribute framing effect is when valenced descriptive messages – “frames” – influence judgements towards the topic of the message consistent with the valence of the frame. Evidence suggests that information processing in the right hemisphere contributes to framing effects. Double Filtering by Frequency (DFF) theory asserts that the hemispheres are biased to process sensory information based upon relative frequencies, with the right hemisphere dominantly responding to stimuli containing relatively lower frequencies. Previous work links differential processing by the right hemisphere, …

When Leaders And Followers Do Not Hold Similar Constructions Of Leadership : How Followers Are Impacted By Conflicting Leadership Expectations, Christine Griffith May 2021

When Leaders And Followers Do Not Hold Similar Constructions Of Leadership : How Followers Are Impacted By Conflicting Leadership Expectations, Christine Griffith

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The rationale of this study was to examine the potential relationship of team members’ leadership expectations and followers’ attitudes and team’s performance. Leadership expectations can vary between the individual level leadership and leadership as a collective or shared team activity (Zhu et al., 2018). Although relational models of leadership consider leadership as an emergent social construction of the team, there may be instances where it is difficult for the team to converge on a single agreed upon model. The purpose of this experiment was to better understand the impact of different alignment of leadership expectations between leaders and followers on …

Reflections Of A Broken Mirror : An Analysis Of The Mirror Motif In The Famished Road, Mama Day, And Us, Samira Pigford

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

According to Jacques Lacan’s mirror stage theory, the mirror is one device in which infants begin to develop an ego through self-identification. The mirror works as a double tool; it serves as a being’s introduction into selfhood but also creates a false interpretation of being. Lacan argues that paradoxically, the mirror helps people discover who they are while also creating feelings of self-alienation (as the infant does not recognize the being in the mirror as themselves). Furthermore, Lacan’s study of psychoanalysis suggests that when people see visions of themselves, through dreams or hallucinations, it further helps reveal aspects of the …

Investigating The Effects Of Catalytic Activity In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Indole-3-Glycerol Phosphate Synthase In Wildtype, N189l, And E57d Variants, Sarah S. Cho

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthesis (IGPS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the ring closure in 1-(o-carboxylphenylamino)-1-deoxyribulose 5-phosphate (CdRP). Multiple steps are expected to be involved in formation of the pyrrole ring including dehydration, decarboxylation, cyclization, and condensation. IGPS is an essential protein in the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis and a potential target in the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis. In order to better understand the function of Mycobacterium tuberculosis IGPS (mtIGPS), we introduced single-point mutations into active site residues. This was based on the hypothesis that introducing mutations would affect the catalysis in a way where we would be able to obtain more information …

Vertical Metal Distributions In Brownfield Soils Drive Enzyme Activities And Plant Success, Eshariah N. Dyson May 2021

Vertical Metal Distributions In Brownfield Soils Drive Enzyme Activities And Plant Success, Eshariah N. Dyson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The distribution of contaminants in polluted soils can vary through depth. We measured the vertical distributions of heavy metals and enzyme activities in the top 10 cm of side-by-side, vegetated and barren brownfield soils. The data showed metals significantly accumulated in the top 2 cm of barren soil and uniformly distributed through vegetated soil. When planted, germination rate was significantly lower in the previously barren soil, with the metal layer intact, compared to mixed barren soil. These data suggest a feedback loop in which plant roots redistribute metals, diluting metal-rich regions, yet germination remains initially limited by a metal cap. …

Replication And Tribological Engineering Of Physical Surfaces Using Two-Photon Lithography, Shelby Robert Maddox May 2021

Replication And Tribological Engineering Of Physical Surfaces Using Two-Photon Lithography, Shelby Robert Maddox

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Up to one-fifth of all energy consumed each year goes directly to overcoming frictional effects. This waste will remain even if renewable energy becomes feasible as a large-scale replacement for conventional fuel sources. If that wasted energy could be saved instead, then overall energy consumption could either decrease or be redirected to where it would be most beneficial to human and environmental flourishing. To this end, there is a need for strategies and techniques to reduce frictional energy loss. It is well established that surface texturing can be used to reduce friction. There are many industrial methods in current use …

Extraction Of Pendulum Model Parameters From Steady-State Slosh Data With Adaptive Gradient Descending Optimization Method For Spacecraft Propellant Tanks, Tengjie Gao

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a new experimental approach to extract pendulum model parameters from spacecraft propellant tank slosh data. The novelty of the approach is in the utilization of steady-state triaxial force measurements at the support points of the tank under sinusoidal excitation, which enables repeatable and accurate determination of pendulum model parameters in contrast to the single-axis force sensing and multiple repetitions averaging techniques associated with the more common decay approach. This approach may be used for tanks with free slosh; however, this thesis considers a diagram tank with three different diaphragm configurations under translational oscillatory lateral excitation. With the …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Self-Efficacy On Stem Implementation, Caroline Buechel May 2021

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Self-Efficacy On Stem Implementation, Caroline Buechel

Curriculum and Instruction Undergraduate Honors Theses

In order to equip students with the 21st Century skills necessary for today’s society, STEM education must be properly implemented in school curricula (Lamb, Akmal, & Petrie, 2015). To do so, it is important for teachers to possess both proficient knowledge of the subject matter and confidence towards the implementation of STEM. A person’s beliefs about their ability is known as their self-efficacy (Bandura 1997). Related to education, Bandura notes that this self-efficacy affects a teacher’s views on their ability to handle tasks, obligations, and challenges related to a challenge (1997). Additionally, numerous studies indicate that this self-efficacy in …
