Parameter-Free Determination Of Au Nanorod Dimensions Using Depolarized Dls And Genetic Optimization, Nehal Nupnar, Geofrey Nyabere, Claire M.B. Bolding, Kiril A. Streletzky, Michael J.A. Hore

Physics Faculty Publications

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have received considerable attention for their distinctive optical properties and well-defined, low-polydispersity dimensions. These characteristics position them as promising candidates for diverse applications in imaging, sensing, and treating diseases. However, accurate characterization of AuNRs in their native solution state, which is crucial to many applications, presents many challenges─especially if AuNRs are coated with surface layers (e.g., surfactants or grafted polymers). When applied to AuNRs with functionalized surfaces, common techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle scattering, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) can present limitations such as small sample sizes, the inability to detect light elements, a …

From Dred Scott To Barbara: Birthright Citizenship, Racial Exclusion, And The Enduring Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Jenna A. Milbrodt Jan 2026

From Dred Scott To Barbara: Birthright Citizenship, Racial Exclusion, And The Enduring Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Jenna A. Milbrodt

CMC Senior Theses

The Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause has guaranteed birthright citizenship to all children born in the United States for hundreds of years. Yet, President Trump’s January 20, 2025, executive order threatens to strip that right from children born to parents unlawfully in the country and temporary visitors. This order, if permitted to stand, would change the definition of US citizenship and render countless children stateless persons without citizenship rights. This paper examines whether birthright citizenship in the US, properly understood, extends to children of unlawful immigrants and temporary visitors. To answer this question, three time periods of change in citizenship rights …

Modeling Taiwanese Monetary Policy: Augmented Taylor And Mccallum Rules, Yu-Chi (Yunnie) Cheng Jan 2026

Modeling Taiwanese Monetary Policy: Augmented Taylor And Mccallum Rules, Yu-Chi (Yunnie) Cheng

CMC Senior Theses

This study examines how price-based and quantity-based monetary frameworks explain the policy actions of the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) within the context of a trade-dependent, small open economy. Utilizing a comparative empirical analysis of Taylor and McCallum rules from 2000 to 2025, the research finds that Taylor rule’s superior fit is contingent upon the inclusion of the augmented variables, such as federal funds rate, Financial Stress Index, and sovereign credit premiums, revealing a policy stance that is deeply reactive to international financial conditions. In contrast, the McCallum rule demonstrates remarkable parsimony, explaining 45% of the variance …

Market Reactions To Software M&A: Cross-Border Vs. Domestic Evidence, Aaryan Magan Jan 2026

Market Reactions To Software M&A: Cross-Border Vs. Domestic Evidence, Aaryan Magan

CMC Senior Theses

The software industry in the United States has seen a period of sustained merger and acquisition (M&A) activity as firms seek synergies in diverse product offerings, efficiency plays, or intellectual capital. Within this activity is also a subset of deals that comprise U.S. acquirers transacting with foreign companies. These cross-border transactions have become an integral part of M&A strategy for companies across all industries. This paper aims to gauge investor sentiment regarding cross-border M&A deals in the software industry relative to domestic M&A deals in the software industry. The event-study methodology captures Cumulative Abnormal Returns (CAR) in two distinct event …

Parking Information And Supervision System, Joshua A. Thum, Alex J. Kinch, Jacob A. Dye

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In densely populated areas, finding parking can be an arduous and time-consuming struggle, especially in large and tall parking decks. Drivers would benefit from a convenient way to find an open parking spot without having to scour the entire lot first. The goal of this project is to sense available parking spots in a parking garage or parking lot using physical object detection and visual detection with computer vision verification, and display the open spots to drivers entering the lot. This information will be displayed locally at the lot and in an app, with the latter allowing someone to see …

High-Speed Non-Pneumatic Tire (Npt) Design For Speeds Above 60 Mph, Jacob Grams, Brady Maurer, Jake Groewa Jan 2026

High-Speed Non-Pneumatic Tire (Npt) Design For Speeds Above 60 Mph, Jacob Grams, Brady Maurer, Jake Groewa

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project focuses on developing a high-speed non-pneumatic tire (NPT) capable of safely operating at speeds greater than 60 mph, a performance range where most existing airless tire designs fail due to structural instability and performance limitations. The objective of this work is to design, analyze, and prototype a structurally optimized honeycomb-based tire structure with improved load distribution, deformation control, and durability. Multiple geometries were evaluated using finite element analysis (FEA) to assess stress and maximum resultant (total) displacement behavior under loading conditions, and a material selection study was performed to identify a suitable material for the design. The final …

Robotic Air Hockey Table, William Forcey, Andrew Piunno, Kaden Carpenter, Xander Zavatchen Jan 2026

Robotic Air Hockey Table, William Forcey, Andrew Piunno, Kaden Carpenter, Xander Zavatchen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Air hockey, a popular arcade game, is traditionally designed for two players. This limits the game’s accessibility for individuals who wish to practice or enjoy it as a single player. To solve this problem, a robotic system was implemented to play air hockey against a human player. The speed and acceleration of the puck and mallet were measured from a game played between humans to inform the required movement capabilities of the robot. The robotic opponent implemented observes the location of the puck on the table using a camera and predicts where it will be in the future. A Cartesian …

Nissan Leaf Disassembly Tool And Test Stand Design, Mariah Z. Hodge Jan 2026

Nissan Leaf Disassembly Tool And Test Stand Design, Mariah Z. Hodge

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Akron Engineering Tribology Laboratory has developed a water-based lubricant and aims to test and observe if the water-based lubricant could work in an electric vehicle environment. As parameters for creating a test stand to mimic an electric motor environment are not readily available online, the goal of this senior design project is to take apart a used Nissan Leaf engine to define the parameters a test stand must meet to accurately recreate an electric motor environment. Knowing these parameters, a test stand will then be designed for testing the water-based lubricants. The purpose of building a test stand to …

Associations Between Discrimination And First-Generation College Students’ Belonging And Academic Well-Being, Thomas P. Le, Nicola Forbes, Elizabeth B. Raposa Jan 2026

Associations Between Discrimination And First-Generation College Students’ Belonging And Academic Well-Being, Thomas P. Le, Nicola Forbes, Elizabeth B. Raposa

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

First-generation college students (FGCS) make up one third of the college student population but continue to face unfavorable academic outcomes. A powerful yet understudied factor that contributes to FGCS’ lower academic and graduation rates is campus discrimination. Importantly, discrimination undermines feelings of belonging on campus and belonging has been found to predict academic performance, motivation, and persistence to graduation. The current study examined whether on-campus discrimination influenced sense of belonging among 276 FGCS sampled during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether decreased sense of belonging, in turn, was associated with two forms of academic well-being (i.e., …

Genocide And Politicide: The Psychology Of State Terrorism, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Genocide And Politicide: The Psychology Of State Terrorism, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter reviews the psychologies that enable mass killing of civilians by government (politicide). A typology of perceived threats is advanced, with special attention to contamination threat and essentializing the enemy. Three groups of actors are distinguished: perpetrators, leaders, and the mass public that leaders and actors claim to represent. Predictors of genocide are considered, highlighting the importance of means and opportunity.

Environmental Degradation And Food Systems In Ghana: Gold Mining And Synthetic Pesticides, Da'mirah Vinson Jan 2026

Environmental Degradation And Food Systems In Ghana: Gold Mining And Synthetic Pesticides, Da'mirah Vinson

Honors Theses

This research examines the relationship between environmental degradation and food systems in Ghana. Although sociological research has explored how extractive practices like gold mining dispossesses farmers of land (Gilbert and Albert 2016; Agariga 2021; Kwang and Blagogie 2025), the consequences for food sovereignty and security remain understudied. Research that considers food and land from a sociocultural perspective is even more limited. My research addresses these gaps by asking: How do environmental degradation practices—specifically gold mining and chemical use—affect food production, distribution, and security in Ghana? And how does the decline of arable land reshape cultural food identity? To explore these …

Toward Completeness Theorem For Guarded Kleene Algebra With Tests, Hung Pham Jan 2026

Toward Completeness Theorem For Guarded Kleene Algebra With Tests, Hung Pham

Honors Theses

Code refactoring is a fundamental practice in software engineering, in which a program is restructured without changing the actions it performs and the results it produces. To carry out refactoring with confidence, one requires a formal method for verifying that two programs are equivalent. Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests (GKAT) provides such a framework, an algebraic system designed to reason about a natural class of programs, namely those in which every branch and loop is governed by a Boolean condition, such as if–else and while statements. Central to GKAT is a finite set of algebraic axioms for deriving program equivalences. …
