Using Microsoft Corporation To Demonstrate The Optimal Capital Structure Trade-Off Theory
Using Microsoft Corporation To Demonstrate The Optimal Capital Structure Trade-Off Theory
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
In this paper, we apply the trade-off theory of capital structure to Microsoft. We use data for bond ratings, bond risk premiums, and levered CAPM betas to compute the cost of equity and the weighted average cost of capital for Microsoft at different debt levels. This study shows the impact of increasing financial leverage on WACC. As financial leverage increases, the WACC decreases until the optimal debt ratio is reached, after which, the WACC begins to rise. At this debt ratio, the value of Microsoft will be maximized. Our results indicate the optimal debt ratio for Microsoft is 37.5 percent.
Finance Professors’ Use Of The Case Method At Harvard And Darden Mba Programs: Ensuring Students’ Technical Knowledge In Finance Courses Using The Case Method
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
One of the potential obstacles of using cases in finance courses is the task of ensuring that students receive the required technical knowledge of the quantitative material. This qualitative study provides a unique perspective of the specific recommendations and practices of multiple, seasoned finance professors from Harvard Business School and University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate Business School, two top-ranked MBA programs with long-standing commitments to the case method as their primary philosophy of teaching and learning. The information gleaned from the interviews and classroom observations of this study can assist educators in overcoming potential obstacle of students’ lack of technical …
Brain-Type, Gender, And Student Success In The Principles Of Economics
Brain-Type, Gender, And Student Success In The Principles Of Economics
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Studies of the impact of gender on student performance in the principles of economics yield ambiguous conclusions. Some studies find that women are less successful than men in the principles of economics, while others conclude that gender is inconsequential. Few, if any, scientific works find women’s performance better than men’s performance. These ambiguities arise because past studies have not considered the distribution of brain-types by gender. This paper addresses the question of which brain-types are more successful in the principles of economics and whether these brain-types can be associated with a particular gender.
Gender, Sociocultural Representations Link With Family Structure In Moroccan Arabic Television Advertising, Naima Ouachene
Gender, Sociocultural Representations Link With Family Structure In Moroccan Arabic Television Advertising, Naima Ouachene
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
Advertising is not just a reflection of society; it is a representation of the world. This phenomenon is very similar to what is called, in social psychology, a social representation. In addition, television advertisement in Moroccan Arabic employs elements of social thinking, beliefs, images, stigma or stereotypes that the receiver confronts with their own thinking system. In this regard, it recovers the image assigned to gender in Moroccan society in order to reproduce its own communicative strategies.
Improving Student Performance In Business Statistics Courses With Online Assessments
Improving Student Performance In Business Statistics Courses With Online Assessments
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
We study the impact of online assessments on student performance in business statistics courses. We quantify the degree to which students take advantage of various online opportunities to improve their quiz grades and estimate its effect on in-class exam scores. We also study the perceptions of students regarding online assessments using anonymous surveys. We find that students believe that multiple attempts at online quizzes help them learn the material, and for the most part take advantage of these opportunities to improve their quiz grades. Furthermore, the effect on exam performance is positive and significant.
Recent Trends And New Evidence In Economics And Finance Education
Recent Trends And New Evidence In Economics And Finance Education
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
The teaching of pre-college economics has been widely researched for over 45 years with studies focused upon teacher training and improving students’ understanding. This paper reviews that research base, and reports the results of a new national survey, as well as a summary of several recent developments in the field of economic education. Young people can learn economics best when taught by knowledgeable teachers using well developed curriculum materials. But, to accommodate expanding state requirements, pertinacious state bureaucracies must increase teacher training and curriculum standards.
The Supply Of Loanable Funds: A Comment On The Misconception And Its Implications
The Supply Of Loanable Funds: A Comment On The Misconception And Its Implications
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Recently Fields-Hart publish two articles on interest rate determination in this journal. In both articles, they analyze interest rates on the basis of an unconventional definition of the supply of loanable funds. In this note we argue that their concept of the supply of loanable funds based on “spillover from the money market” is a gross misunderstanding of the concept. Although Fields-Hart considered their concept as “critically important part of their story,” the results in their first article are independent of this mistake. However, their second article continues this misconception and hence yields invalid results.
Testing Equity Portfolios For Alpha Bias: An Exercise For Student Investment Funds
Testing Equity Portfolios For Alpha Bias: An Exercise For Student Investment Funds
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
We present an exercise that that guides students through the rationale and techniques for identifying and correcting for alpha bias in the reported performance of equity portfolios. The exercise is particularly relevant for Student Investment Fund programs that invest actual money, as the historical performance of the class portfolio can be used in the activity, which creates an additional level of engagement for students. Students learn why portfolios that emphasize smallcapitalization and/or value stocks tend to display a positive alpha bias (overstating performance), and why portfolios that emphasize largecapitalization and/or growth stocks tend to display a negative alpha bias (understating …

The concentrations of Pb in washed fingernails of healthy …
From Operations To Outcomes: The Role Of Industry 4.0 In Customer Management And Financial Performance, Hong Long Chen
From Operations To Outcomes: The Role Of Industry 4.0 In Customer Management And Financial Performance, Hong Long Chen
Management Dynamics
Despite extensive research on Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies, relatively little attention has been given to their impact on financial performance at the firm level. This study proposes a model to investigate the links between I4.0 implementation level (I4.0IL), supply chain management performance (SCMP), customer management performance (CMP), and company financial outcomes using bootstrap-based structural equation modeling (SEM) with data from 91 companies across various sectors. The results of the bootstrap-based SEM with 1,000 resamples show that SCMP significantly influences both CMP and company financial performance, and CMP also significantly impacts financial performance. While I4.0IL does not significantly amplify the effects …

The Role Of Side-Chain Length And Counterion Mediation On Dimerization Of Rigid Sphere-Rod Amphiphiles: A Molecular Dynamics Investigation, Mesfin Tsige, Tianbo Liu, Javad Tamnanloo, Abdol Hadi Mokarizadeh
University Research
Rigid sphere-rod amphiphiles (RSRAs) comprising a Keggin polyoxometalate (POM) headgroup and an oligofluorene rod with different side chain lengths (C2, C6, C10, C16, are the number of carbon atoms per side chain) were probed by all-atom molecular dynamics in THF/water mixtures (15 and 33 vol % THF) with tetrabutylammonium (TBA+) counterions to elucidate the molecular origins of dimerization. Despite strong Keggin-Keggin electrostatic repulsion, stable dimers form through a synergy of (i) hydrophobic rod/side-chain interaction that strengthens with side-chain length and (ii) counterion-mediated attraction by TBA+, which localizes near the Keggins to screen electrostatic repulsion. Packing evolves from near-parallel rods for …

Institute on Aging Publications
This study combines the CRITIC and DEMATEL methods and introduces a new hybrid scenario analysis approach that identifies cross-scenario strategies. We use Taiwan's wind energy industry as a case study to validate the process. Although scenario analysis has been applied across various fields and organization types—including strategic planning, education, training, and recent environmental issues—scholars have highlighted problems such as the subjectivity of qualitative analysis and the lack of quantitative evidence. To address this, this study integrates scenario analysis with quantitative multi-criteria decision analysis to support decision makers in conducting scenario evaluations. We achieve this by applying a multi-criteria approach to …

Fuzzy Pi Controller For Frequency Control Of A Diesel-Pv-Battery-Based Islanded Ac Microgrid, M. S. Elborlsy, Ramadan M. Mostafa, Hossam E. Keshta, Mohamed A. Ghalib
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Effective management of modern electrical grids requires intelligent and adaptable control mechanisms to effectively balance power supply and demand, particularly in times of significant disturbances. Microgrids predominantly harness renewable energy sources (RES), which are inherently variable, for electricity generation. However, due to these fluctuations, conventional control systems often struggle to optimize performance under diverse operational conditions. This study addresses the need for improved frequency regulation in isolated AC microgrids (MGs) by proposing a fuzzy PI (FPI) controller capable of dynamically adjusting control strategies to accommodate disturbances such as three-phase faults, sudden changes in load, and variations in solar irradiance. A …

A Transferable Force Field For Simulating Adsorption In Metal–Organic Frameworks With Open Metal Sites Based On The 12–6–4 Lennard-Jones Potential, Meng Du, Alan Rodriguez, Matthew Z. Lin, Haoyuan Chen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that contain coordinatively unsaturated open metal sites (OMSs) provide strong host–guest interactions, making them promising sorbents for low-concentration gas adsorption applications such as direct air capture and atmospheric water harvesting. However, accurately modeling host–guest interactions involving OMSs remains challenging for classical force fields (FFs) based on the 12–6 Lennard–Jones (LJ) potential, as the polarization effect of the guest molecule induced by the positively charged OMS is not considered. Here, we introduce an FF based on the 12–6–4 LJ potential, which incorporates charge–induced dipole interactions and is parametrized against a diverse set of host–guest potential energy surfaces (PESs) …
Breath Back, Bronte Alston
Breath Back, Bronte Alston
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Breath Back is a collection of poems written throughout the first 18 months of a doctoral study based in the petro-state of Western Australia. As a Wadjela (non-Indigenous) climate justice activist-researcher, Alston adopts poetic autoethnography as an embodied, intuitive praxis to critically and reflexively examine limitations, positionality, power, privilege, and voice throughout their research process. This collection is deeply intertwined with Alston’s deepening connection to Country, specifically through the seasonal cycles of Wardandi Noongar Boodja (Country) in south-west Western Australia.
Reckoning With Retaliation: Objective Reasonableness In Sox Whistleblower Cases, Jacob S. Levin
Reckoning With Retaliation: Objective Reasonableness In Sox Whistleblower Cases, Jacob S. Levin
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 to prevent systemic fraud. To this end, Congress included unparalleled anti-retaliation protections for whistleblowers in 28 U.S.C. § 1514A, aimed expressly at ending the “corporate code of silence” which enabled large-scale fraud to go undetected.
To fall within the scope of SOX’s anti-retaliation provisions, a whistleblower must demonstrate he had an “objectively reasonable belief” that his employer’s conduct violated the laws or regulations enumerated in § 1514A. However, the Act does not define what a whistleblower must show to establish an “objectively reasonable belief” that their employer engaged in fraudulent conduct. Over time, …
Vapes In Violation: The Case For An Fdca-Based Negligence Per Se Claim Against E-Cigarette Manufacturers, Grace Hering
Vapes In Violation: The Case For An Fdca-Based Negligence Per Se Claim Against E-Cigarette Manufacturers, Grace Hering
University of Chicago Legal Forum
The unexpected and dramatic rise in youth e-cigarette consumption in the past decade has left both private and public actors racing to catch up to a quickly evolving and potentially disastrous market. As litigation against e-cigarette manufacturers continues to develop, it is increasingly evident that one of the biggest obstacles to bringing private claims will be avoiding preemption under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA).
This Comment argues that one untested yet promising pathway for injured plaintiffs to avoid preemption is to bring FDCA-based negligence per se claims. By examining precedent involving other FDCA provisions, this Comment assesses …
Curfew And Its Constitutional Limits: Analyzing The Judicial Standard Of Review For Curfews In Times Of Emergency, Alec Greven
Curfew And Its Constitutional Limits: Analyzing The Judicial Standard Of Review For Curfews In Times Of Emergency, Alec Greven
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Curfews imposed against an entire civilian population are extremely rare. Despite this, the amount of curfews has recently skyrocketed in the United States as government officials use this sweeping power to respond to emergencies. This Comment evaluates the constitutional rights implicated by general curfew orders, namely the right to travel and the right to speak in public forums. Then, this Comment surveys the current circuit split. Lower courts significantly diverge in their standard of review of curfew orders and apply three very different forms of review: deference, intermediate scrutiny, and strict scrutiny. This Comment argues that courts should subject general …
False Claims, Real Threats: Cybersecurity Noncompliance And The False Claims Act’S Materiality Standard, Charlotte Bairey
False Claims, Real Threats: Cybersecurity Noncompliance And The False Claims Act’S Materiality Standard, Charlotte Bairey
University of Chicago Legal Forum
This Comment examines the challenges of applying the False Claims Act’s (FCA) materiality standard to cybersecurity noncompliance by federal contractors. Although the Department of Justice’s Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative seeks to hold government contractors accountable for misrepresenting their adherence to federal cybersecurity standards, courts have inconsistently applied the “holistic” framework for determining materiality established by the Supreme Court in Universal Health Services v. Escobar. Cybersecurity-related FCA claims face unique obstacles when it comes to showing materiality because noncompliance is widespread, national security interests complicate the government’s payment decisions, and government agencies may continue contracting with noncompliant entities out of necessity. This …
Majority Rule And Bankruptcy Resolution Of Mass-Harm Events, Sarah Paterson, Adrian Walters
Majority Rule And Bankruptcy Resolution Of Mass-Harm Events, Sarah Paterson, Adrian Walters
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Mass-harm events invariably precipitate mass tort liabilities. Since the enactment of the Bankruptcy Code in 1978, firms have resorted to Chapter 11 to address mass tort claims in cases involving asbestos-related disease, defective products, the opioid crisis, and historic sexual abuse. Of late, the use of bankruptcy to resolve mass tort claims has been the subject of sustained criticism from inside and outside bankruptcy law’s professional and academic communities. Much of this has been provoked by the Purdue Pharma filing and the bankruptcy court’s approval of a plan of reorganization that created a liability shield for the Sackler family in …
Exploring The Reduction Of Runway Incursions Through Training, Vasilios (Billy) Constaintine Metallinos
Exploring The Reduction Of Runway Incursions Through Training, Vasilios (Billy) Constaintine Metallinos
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Runway incursions are prevalent aviation safety issues that result in adverse outcomes. The focus of this qualitative case study was exploring the reduction of runway incursions through training for pilots. Applying social cognitive theory (SCT) provided this study with a theoretical underpinning. Conducting interviews and a focus group with 17 participants allowed for the collection of enough data and resulted in identifying the importance of training in preventing runway incursions. Based on the thematic analysis conducted, it was identified that evidence-based, scenario-based, and continuous training can be used to reduce runway incursions caused by pilot deviations. The results contribute to …

Emergencies, Alien And Domestic, Samuel Issacharoff
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Democracies survive some emergencies, even emerging stronger after some crises despite temporary suspensions of liberty. Democracies die when faced with other emergencies. This Article explores why. It addresses the claimed need to limit rights of electoral participation in response to the rise of antidemocratic forces through the lens of militant democracy in Europe and the Insurrection Clause of Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment in the United States. When examined through the context of claimed exigency, the ability of democracies to survive or even thrive after emergencies turns heavily on whether the source of the perceived threat is foreign or …
