A Novel Ankle Sprain Rehabilitation Device, Ian Argento, Bs, Jack Rifkin, Bs, Brady Stillman, Bs, Robert Pugliese, Pharmd
Phase 1
Background: Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries across all patient groups. Structured rehabilitation with resistance bands decreases re-injury by improving balance, range of motion, and strength, but protocols vary widely. Furthermore, patients often struggle to perform resistance band exercises correctly, limiting their effectiveness.
Aim: To design and develop a wearable rehabilitation device that standardizes resistance band therapy for ankle sprains by controlling resistance vectors and progressive overload.
Methods/Design: We conducted a needs assessment of current rehabilitation practices and identified limitations in resistance band use, including lack of standardization, variability in patient adherence, and difficulty replicating exercises at …

Design Of A Standardized Resistance-Based Rehabilitation Device For Ankle Sprain Recovery, Jack Rifkin, Bs, Brady Stallman, Bs, Ian Argento, Bs, Robert Pugliese, Pharmd
Phase 1
Introduction: Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, particularly in adolescents and athletes. Although many patients recover quickly, a substantial number experience poor healing, leading to chronic ankle instability, weakness, and reinjury. While structured rehabilitation improves outcomes, inconsistent protocols and difficulty performing resistance-based exercises limit effectiveness. This project addresses the need for a standardized and accessible rehabilitation approach for ankle sprain recovery.
Methods: We designed a novel rehabilitation device that reimagines traditional resistance band therapy by standardizing resistance vectors and enabling controlled progressive overload. The design supports reproducible ankle movements targeting strength, range of motion, and proprioception. Iterative …

Development Of A Novel Resistance-Integrated Device To Optimize Ankle Strength Recovery, Brady Stallman, Bs, Jack Rifkin, Bs, Ian Argento, Bs, Robert Pugliese, Pharmd
Phase 1
Introduction: Ankle sprains occur when ligaments of the ankle are stretched or torn due to excessive force, such as twisting or rolling. Ankle sprains are the most common injury in athletes, with re-injury rates as high as 47%. We aim to design a device with integrated resistance to standardize re-strengthening care in patients with sprained ankles.
Methods: A crucial aspect of ankle rehabilitation involves regaining strength and proprioception through resistance band exercises. Currently, resistance band exercises are difficult to complete alone, which is a necessary part of at-home exercises. Our wearable ankle-strengthening device standardizes the exercises, allowing for easier use …

Temperature Control Vest For Use In Acute Hyperthermic Episodes, Connor Coyle, David Azizi, Isaac Kravatz, Robert Pugliese, Pharmd
Phase 1
Introduction: In the acute treatment of acute hyperthermia that is treated in austere conditions, there is a lack of a portable, effective, and inexpensive device that can rapidly lower the temperature of the patient back to baseline levels. With rapidly rising global temperatures, we anticipate an increase in acute heat strokes where correction by cooling can save countless lives. We want to create a medical device that is effective in cooling a patient with hyperthermia to increase survival and recovery outcomes. Our main inquiry is whether it is reasonable to design, produce, and test a cooling device that fits within …

Beyond Naloxone: A Human Centered Overdose Response And Education Kit To Destigmatize Opioid Use Disorder For First-Year Medical Students, Hope Friel, Justin Leggin, Madeleine Peele, Donya Zarrinnegar, Abigail Kay, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: Opioid related deaths are a leading cause of death in adults in the United States and Thomas Jefferson University equips each first year medical student (M1) with a box of Narcan at the White Coat Ceremony. Research has shown that there are knowledge and training gaps in M1s and harmful stigmas surrounding drug users. This project examines how we might provide an education-focused opioid overdose response kit and intervention for JeffMD M1s in order to reduce stigma and improve clinical readiness for drug-related emergencies.
Methods: Class of 2029 M1s will take a pre-post survey to capture the baseline level …

Beyond Naloxone: A Human-Centered Overdose Response And Education Kit To Destigmatize Opioid Use Disorder For First-Year Medical Students, Justin Leggin, Abigail Kay, Md, Madeleine Peel, Hope Friel, Donya Zarrinnegar
Phase 1
Introduction: Opioid overdose remains a leading cause of preventable mortality in the United States and is particularly prevalent in Philadelphia. While first-year medical students commonly receive brief training in overdose recognition and naloxone administration, such instruction often overlooks stigma toward people who use drugs(PWUD). Sidney Kimmel Medical College implemented a two-step model in which students received naloxone at their white coat ceremony and later completed a clinical skills–based overdose response session. This study assessed how this training influenced first-year students’ overdose knowledge and attitudes toward PWUD.
Methods: Students completed the Opioid Overdose Knowledge Scale (OOKS; 0–39)and Opioid Overdose Attitudes Scale …

Beyond Naloxone: A Human Centered Overdose Response And Education Kit To Destigmatize Opioid Use Disorder For First-Year Medical Students, Madeleine Peel, Justin Leggin, Hope Friel, Donya Zarrinnegar, Abigail Kay, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: Over 1,413 unintentional opioid-related deaths occurred in Philadelphia in 2022,indicating a public health crisis. Medical students can assist in overdose responses, driving our question: how might we provide an education-focused opioid-overdose response kit for first-year JeffMD students to reduce stigma and improve clinical readiness for opioid-related emergencies? We hypothesize that a naloxone kit with educational materials will improve preparedness and empathy and reduce stigma toward people who use drugs (PUD) compared with standard naloxone training.
Methods: A needs assessment was conducted among first-year JeffMD’s class of 2029 using pre- and post-surveys administered before and after a naloxone training. Surveys …

Beyond Naloxone: A Human Centered Overdose Response And Education Kit To Destigmatize Opioid Use Disorder For First-Year Medical Students, Donya Zarrinnegar, Justin Leggins, Madeleine Peel, Hope Friel, Abigail Kay, Md
Phase 1
Introduction: The opioid crisis remains a leading cause of accidental death among U.S. adults under 45. Yet, medical education often inadequately prepares trainees to recognize overdoses, administer naloxone, or provide stigma-free care for people who use drugs (PWUD). These gaps contribute to reduced treatment engagement and underutilization of lifesaving interventions. This project examined whether an education-focused opioid overdose response intervention for first-year JeffMD students (Class of 2029) reduces stigma and improves clinical preparedness for drug-related emergencies.
Methods: We administered a baseline survey prior to the White Coat Ceremony and a follow-up survey after a naloxone training. Surveys incorporated validated instruments, …

“I Plead Ignorance”: Autonomous Weapons And Criminal Liability For Not Knowing The Knowable, Jonathan Kwik
International Law Studies
This article argues that the unpredictability and unintuitive behavior of modern artificial intelligence provide more opportunities for users of autonomous weapon systems (AWS) to remain ignorant of risks posed by their systems to protected entities on the battlefield, and that this ignorance can be maintained even in iterative situations featuring a prior civilian casualty event. It demonstrates this theorem through illustrative targeting scenarios, before formalizing the argument through a model showing the evolution of an AWS-user’s mens rea as they receive notice of a prior incident, and choose to pursue—or not pursue—an inquiry. This analysis reveals a perverse incentive structure, …

Agent-Based Model Details For Quantifying Error In Drone-Based Animal Surveys: Animal Density, Distribution And Flight Patterns, Emma A. Schultz, Natasha Ellison-Neary, Landon R. Jones, Kristine O. Evans, Raymond B. Iglay
Research Data
The following dataset pertains to Python scripts of an agent-based model simulating various drone survey design and quantifying potential count bias of stationary animals in fixed landscapes as part of an accepted manuscript in Ecosphere. Simulated animals were distributed among five animal densities (n = 4, 9, 25, 49, 100 animals/survey area) and three distribution patterns (random, uniform, aggregated). Eight drone flight patterns surveyed a 4.16-km2 landscape within constraints of real-world battery and line-of-sight limitations. The simplified landscape also provided 100% animal classification (i.e., all animals within image frame observed and identified).

Human Capital And Labor Market Effects Of Elite Schooling In England, Scotland, And Wales: New Causal Evidence From Nonparametric Bounds, Zhanhan Yu, Vikesh Amin, Carlos A. Flores, Alfonso Flores-Lagunes, Giuseppe Germinario
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We estimate the causal effect of attending elite schools in England, Scotland, and Wales on human capital and labor market outcomes for cohorts of children from the 1958 National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study. For identification, we employ a nonparametric partial-identification approach that provides bounds on the causal effect by assuming that, on average, there is positive selection into elite school attendance, and that attending an elite school does not worsen average potential human capital or labor market outcomes. The bounds indicate that there could possibly be large education and labor market returns from attending an …

Emergency Nurses’ Perspectives On Workload, Stress, And Violence In The Context Of The U.S. Nursing Shortage, Wanda Marie Haynes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The nursing shortage is a critical global issue that significantly impacts emergency nurses (ER), leading to increased workloads, psychological stress, and heightened exposure to workplace violence (WPV). This phenomenon raises concerns among healthcare administrators and nurse leaders who seek strategies to improve retention and ensure quality patient care. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the meaning of workload, stress, and WPV among ER nurses during the U.S. nursing shortage. Guided by Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the study employed a phenomenological approach to capture nurses’ lived experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight ER nurses from diverse …
"The Persistent And Muddy Dispute": How The Facial/As-Applied Distinction Creates Problems For Constitutional Litigants, Sean P. Wilson
"The Persistent And Muddy Dispute": How The Facial/As-Applied Distinction Creates Problems For Constitutional Litigants, Sean P. Wilson
Duke Law Journal
The distinction between facial and as-applied challenges continues to play a central role in constitutional litigation, including at the Supreme Court. Yet, the distinction and its related rules have long suffered from a lack of doctrinal clarity and consistency. This Note sets out a descriptive taxonomy of three problems facing constitutional litigants because of the murkiness surrounding the facial/as-applied distinction.
First, the “Doctrinal-Test Problem” refers to the fact that many constitutional doctrines appear to require the courts to engage in facial adjudication, even if a litigant wishes to bring an as-applied claim. Thus, as-applied litigants are forced into facial challenges, …
Supervising The Omnipresent Casino: Evaluating The Role Of State And Local Regulation In Stemming Youth Addiction To Sports Gambling, Matthew Connor Flink
Supervising The Omnipresent Casino: Evaluating The Role Of State And Local Regulation In Stemming Youth Addiction To Sports Gambling, Matthew Connor Flink
Duke Law Journal
Since 2018, state legalization of sports betting and the industry’s corresponding proliferation has driven an epidemic of youth addiction. Current state legislation and regulations do little to combat youth addiction. Many legal scholars emphasize the value that a federal regulatory regime would provide to reign in youth sports betting. This Note explores the value that state and local government can have in the sports gambling space. To illustrate the unique importance of state and local legislation and regulation of sports betting, this Note analogizes to another addictive product with a history of youth addiction: nicotine.
Nicotine has been a regulatory …

Balancing Acts: Gender Parity Law And Cultural Boundaries In Senegal, Seulgie Lim
All Faculty Scholarship
This article investigates the intersection of global gender equality norms with local contexts, focusing on Senegal’s implementation of the 2010 gender parity law. Despite the global trend towards electoral gender quotas, the effectiveness and societal acceptance of these measures vary significantly. Through a critical examination of existing literature on gender quotas and an analysis of the parity law’s reception in Senegal, this article explores the nuanced dynamics between legislative measures and societal norms. It argues that, while gender quotas can enhance women’s visibility in politics, deeply ingrained cultural and religious norms may undermine the more substantive impact of such legislated …
