Ƒ(Cell): Software For Reproducible Analysis Of Optoretinograms, Robert F. Cooper, Mina Gaffney, Brea D. Brennan, Niko Rios
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose: There has been a marked increase in use of a noninvasive functional imaging technique called optoretinography (ORG). As more groups use ORGs, it is crucial to have a consistent methodology, and understand what analysis parameters influence repeatability. In this work, we present an open-source software library called ƒ(Cell) designed to facilitate reproducible and repeatable analyses of ORG data.
Methods: We designed ƒ(Cell) as a Python software library that can co-register and analyze ORG datasets, while also enabling process auditing. To validate the software, we used our previously obtained normative optoretinography datasets as well as datasets from six …

Dimensions
Plurilingualism and multilingualism have long been central to human interaction. However, in the context of increasing global mobility, digital communication and ongoing migration, they have gained renewed importance. This article examines some aspects of language diversity and plurilingual teaching and learning in Europe. It situates current European language policies as pivotal in fostering plurilingual competence and intercultural understanding through education. The discussion foregrounds exemplarily the pluralistic theoretical and didactic model of intercomprehension, defining its core principles and summarizing central concepts. It highlights digital and social learning environments and shows the importance of the human factor for successful plurilingual education. In …

Awakening To Languages: Preparing A Peaceful Multilingual World, Michel Candelier, Jean François De Pietro
Dimensions
Awakening to Languages (AtL) is a teaching approach that proposes multilingual activities and accompanies language teaching to foster the learners’ awareness of and openness to multilingualism, while increasing their reflexive metalinguistic abilities. In this article, we describe ATL as a component of Didactics of Plurilingualism (DP) and its main aims and characteristics which will be illustrated through multiple examples of activities and teaching materials. We further discuss the reported effects of AtL on learners, teachers, and parents, followed by current trends in integrating AtL in schools. We then turn to a comparison of core concepts of AtL and DP to …

To Swear Or Not To Swear: Exploring The Role Of Profanity In Influencer Marketing, Mahdi Niknejad Moghadam, Vijay Mahajan
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Influencers play a central role in promoting products and services on digital platforms. Understanding the impact of their linguistic choices, including the use of profanity, is therefore important for marketers seeking to engage target audiences. This study investigates how influencers’ profanity usage shapes user engagement. The authors analyze videos shared by influencers on a popular video-sharing platform and extract auditory, visual, and verbal features using a range of machinelearning tools. The findings indicate that profanity in focal content is associated with lower engagement, with a substantially larger effect in categories where profanity is less normatively expected. This negative effect is …
When Should The Legal System Help Redistribute Income?, Jacob Goldin, Zachary Liscow
When Should The Legal System Help Redistribute Income?, Jacob Goldin, Zachary Liscow
University of Chicago Law Review
Should legal rules be designed exclusively based on efficiency considerations, or should they also attempt to promote an equitable distribution of social resources? The answer traditionally associated with scholarship in law and economics is that they should focus only on efficiency. Even for a society that cares about achieving an equitable distribution of resources by income, the argument goes, it is generally better to adopt legal rules based exclusively on efficiency considerations while relying on the income tax and transfer system to promote distributional goals.
However, even proponents of the claim that social welfare is best promoted through the adoption …

Contagious Discrimination: Why Race-Blind Justice In Courtrooms Is Not Enough, Yijia Lu, Murat C. Mungan
Faculty Scholarship
Existing theories of discrimination focus on discrimination at the individual, societal, or organizational level. We highlight the importance of the dynamic relationship between different institutional actors who jointly give rise to discriminatory outcomes. This reveals that discrimination can be contagious: discrimination that would otherwise not occur at one institutional level can arise due to discrimination at another institutional level. Therefore, discrimination by some actors can trickle down and create disparate impacts in processes that would otherwise be free of discrimination. This phenomenon, which we term “contagious discrimination,” can manifest itself in various settings such as employment and commercial trade negotiations. …

The current political moment, where immigrant identity is scapegoated and academic freedom is threatened, requires an affirmation of personal identity, a recognition of personal struggle, and a celebration of resilience. This Essay embraces the ideas that professional identity development is temporal and that the current conceptualization of professionalism requires embarking on a reflection journey that addresses the dissonance between personal conscience and professional duty. Part I briefly revisits the work of Professor Margaret E. Montoya, one of the first Chicana law professors that describes the formation of her professional identity as a law student. It explores the status of Latinas …
The Lost Origins Of Antitrust, William Magnuson
The Lost Origins Of Antitrust, William Magnuson
Faculty Scholarship
Over the last decade, the once-sleepy field of antitrust has suddenly sprung to the forefront of public attention. The digitalization of the economy, the expansion of Big Tech, and the rise of platform monopolies have all raised deep questions about the nature of corporate power and law’s capacity to constrain it. Some scholars have argued that antitrust enforcement must be reinvigorated in substance and broadened in scope in order to combat rapidly rising economic inequality. Others have argued that antitrust law is ill-equipped to address these broad moral issues and instead must be re-focused on its traditional principles of consumer …

Money laundering is a financial crime that obscures the origin of illicit funds, necessitating the development and enforcement of anti-money laundering (AML) policies by governments and organizations. The proliferation of mobile payment platforms and smart IoT devices has significantly complicated AML investigations. As payment networks become more interconnected, there is an increasing need for efficient real-time detection to process large volumes of transaction data on heterogeneous payment systems by different operators such as digital currencies, cryptocurrencies, and account-based payments. Most of these mobile payment networks are supported by connected devices, many of which are considered loT devices in the FinTech …

Stepwise regression remains widely used for model selection, yet the field lacks a comprehensive, well-documented tool that supports diverse model families and selection strategies, implements multiple information criteria, and addresses overfitting and post-selection inference. We present StepReg, an R package that unifies stepwise selection across linear, generalized linear (e.g., logistic, Poisson, Gamma, negative binomial), and Cox models, supporting forward, backward, bidirectional, and best-subset search under various information criteria. StepReg also supports multivariate multiple linear stepwise regression, enabling simultaneous modeling of multiple dependent variables. Users can explore multiple strategies and information criteria within a single function call, and optionally combine them …

Context. Nearby galaxies exhibit a variety of structures, including so-called central or (circum-)nuclear rings that are similar to the Milky Way (MW) Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). These rings are common in barred galaxies and can be gas-rich and highly star-forming. Aims. We aim to study the molecular gas content and star formation rate of central rings within nearby galaxies and link them to global galaxy properties, especially the bar morphology. Methods. We utilized 1″(≲100 pc) resolution CO(2–1) observations from the PHANGS-ALMA survey, visually identifying 20 central rings and determine their properties. For 14 of these rings, MUSE observations tracing star …

Regulatory costs are an increasing concern for California growers. Recent studies in Salinas Valley lettuce and San Joaquin Valley fruit, vegetable and row crops show that regulatory costs are growing at a much faster rate than costs of production. Napa County Farm Bureau contacted Cal Poly to conduct a case study of regulations accruing to Napa Valley vineyards. We interviewed one large (1000-acre) and one small (200-acre) vineyard in 2025 and documented the costs of complying with regulations in the following categories:
• Education and Training for Regulatory Compliance
• Air Quality
• Water Quality
• Surface and Groundwater Regulations …

Evidence And Assessing Verbatim Transcription Quality Of Black English And Standard American English, L. Alexander Walker Iii
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter explores the accuracy of private transcription services when transcribing Black English and Standard American English. Courts and lawyers in the US regularly rely on transcripts from such services, but third-party verification of their accuracy, especially with respect to their quality when faced with nonstandard language varieties, is lacking. This study draws on experimental methods to contrast the quality of transcription services offered by transcribers and AI route. The quantitative results show that transcription by humans and AI resulted in more mistakes when transcribing Black English than when transcribing Standard American English. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis reveals that these …
Post-Chevron Deference In Asylum Proceedings, Shawn E. Fields
Post-Chevron Deference In Asylum Proceedings, Shawn E. Fields
Cardozo Law Review
The Supreme Court held for four decades that Chevron deference should apply in all immigration proceedings. How, then, will asylum proceedings change in a post-Chevron world? When, and under what circumstances, will courts continue to defer to the findings of immigration judges and the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)? And why does it matter? This Article answers those questions.
These issues require urgent examination for three reasons. First, they directly confront an issue pending before the U.S. Supreme Court in Urias-Orellana v. Bondi: Without the protection of Chevron insulating BIA decisions from meaningful judicial review, can certain legal questions like …

Evaluation Of Publicly Available Maize Germplasm Adaptation To Environments In Nebraska, Garrett Snodgrass
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Publicly available maize germplasm represents an important resource for breeding programs seeking to expand genetic diversity and improve hybrid performance. However, effective use requires characterization of per se phenotypic performance of parental lines and evaluation of the parental line’s hybrid progeny adaptation to a given target population of environments. Furthermore, understanding population structure and heterotic grouping is imperative for maximizing efficiency of breeding decisions. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate phenotypic performance of parental lines and hybrids across environments in Nebraska, and to (2) refine heterotic group classification of parental lines within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Hybrid …
