Richard Lowery v. Lillian Mills

On Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit

From the Summary of Argument

The suppression of constitutionally protected speech violates the First Amendment. A speaker need not be punished to be able to state a cause of action if the government has suppressed or threatens to suppress his or her speech through other means. This Court, across decades, and in a range of contexts, repeatedly has reaffirmed that principle. It has done so in cases affirming that a party may challenge a criminal statute …

The Collaborative Development Of Core Vocabulary In International English-Medium Early Childhood Teacher Education, Muhammad Qureshi, Kay Gallagher, Michael Bowles, Jenny Eppard

All Works

This paper serves as a guide for the development of contextually relevant word lists and word guides for English-medium early childhood teacher education programs internationally. Such resources are particularly important for English-medium programs in higher education settings where English is typically a second or foreign language for students, and where limited vocabulary knowledge can curtail learning. In the context of an undergraduate early childhood teacher education program at an English-medium university in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a rapidly modernizing Gulf state with a new interest in early childhood education, language, and content teachers co-developed word lists for Arabic-speaking students …

Quantifying Location-Based Variability Of Regional Brain Metabolism Using Microsamples From Apoe Knock-In Mice, Jason G. Wells, Esteban G. Colman, John C. Price

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is an important lipid transporter in the brain. There are three different ApoE variants: ApoE2, ApoE3, and ApoE4. Each of these variants either contribute to or protect against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The Hippocampus (HC) and the Entorhinal Region (ER) of the brain consistently develop AD pathology first. We hypothesize that ApoE variants affect lipid and protein metabolism in these regions more strongly than in others. Differences in the regional regulation and the ApoE-isoform impacts of these metabolic pathways remain unknown.

We measured brain protein turnover rates in ApoE knock-in mice labeled with deuterated water. Using a laser …

Antibiotics are a special category of drugs that help treat bacterial infections by killing bacteria or hindering their growth and replication. Antibiotics are greatly significant in modern medical practices, providing an effective treatment for bacterial infections as well as enabling organ transplants, open surgeries, and chemotherapy to be possible. Unfortunately, cases of antibiotic resistance were observed shortly after the introduction of antibiotics. The appearance and spread of these resistant strains poses a significant threat to public health safety. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates there are 2,868,700 antibiotic-resistant bacterial and fungal infection cases per year in the United States, …

All Decisions

In this nonpayment proceeding, the landlord moved to strike the tenant's affirmative defenses and counterclaims, and the tenant cross-moved to amend their answer. The court partially granted the landlord's motion, dismissing some defenses (personal jurisdiction for petition, breach of prior stipulation) and several counterclaims (duplicative, tort claims outside jurisdiction). However, defenses challenging predicate notice service, validity of rent, retaliatory eviction, harassment, and warranty of habitability were sustained. The tenant's cross-motion to amend the answer to add rent overcharge defenses and a counterclaim, challenging the legal rent history and a prior agreement, was granted, finding them not devoid of merit.

Perspectives On Food Sovereignty In Chicago, Camden Bruce Blowers Mar 2026

Perspectives On Food Sovereignty In Chicago, Camden Bruce Blowers

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

The research question for this project focuses on food sovereignty. “How do individuals working with food in Chicago identify their role in promoting food sovereignty?” is a research question that expands with some nuance into the question of “who” individuals are in terms of political orientation. When asked to identify political ideology and economic ideology, the values can be greater quantified. Using mixed-methods, this paper critically assesses perspectives of individuals working with food in Chicago. The online survey enumerates the individual perspectives, food culture, and sociopolitical interactions of food sellers, producers, and advocates. Ten interviews further establish 1) the sociopolitical …

Heart and Vascular Articles

INTRODUCTION: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are commonly used in clinical practice. Historical PICC placement methods (e.g. fluoroscopy-guided placement or blind insertion with confirmatory chest X-ray) have many limitations and are associated with longer wait times, treatment delays, and potential risks to patient safety. One such way of addressing some of these issues is the use of dedicated systems that integrate ultrasound vessel selection and PICC insertion, magnetic catheter tip navigation, and intracavitary electrocardiogram-based tip confirmation (IC-ECG). The uptake of these systems has been slow in some parts of the world. This narrative review aims to assess the clinical and …

Human-Ai Collaboration In Marketing Brainstorming: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Implementation Approaches And Creative Outcomes, Michael Michaels Mar 2026

Human-Ai Collaboration In Marketing Brainstorming: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Implementation Approaches And Creative Outcomes, Michael Michaels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marketing organizations face intensifying pressure to sustain creative output while managing constrained resources and accelerating digital content cycles. The integration of artificial intelligence into marketing brainstorming processes presents a promising response to this challenge; however, prior to this investigation, no comprehensive quantitative synthesis had established the overall effectiveness of human-AI collaboration in marketing creativity contexts or identified optimal implementation strategies.

This dissertation presents a systematic meta-analytic investigation of AI-enhanced brainstorming effectiveness in marketing contexts. Following PRISMA guidelines, 42 independent empirical studies (N = 2,166 participants) published between 2018 and 2025 were identified across four primary academic databases, coded for implementation …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Ocean biogeochemistry is being altered by anthropogenic processes such as warming, acidification, eutrophication, and deoxygenation. Global-ocean biogeochemistry models are essential for investigating present and projecting future conditions, yet they often lack detailed representations of seafloor processes, despite the seafloor’s important role in material exchange between the biosphere and geosphere. To improve the representation of exchange across the sediment-water interface, we present RADIv2, a flexible and computationally efficient diagenetic model designed to simulate benthic biogeochemical processes across a range of marine environments, from coastal zones to abyssal plains. RADIv2 incorporates key features such as benthic methane cycling, a hydrodynamically controlled diffusive …

Aging In The Shadows: Szekler Cemeteries And The Case For Recognizing Elderly Populations In Bioarchaeology, Katie M. Mcgrath Mar 2026

Aging In The Shadows: Szekler Cemeteries And The Case For Recognizing Elderly Populations In Bioarchaeology, Katie M. Mcgrath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study of aging in past populations lies at the intersection of bioarchaeology and paleodemography, offering insight into both biological processes and lived social experience. Despite this potential, older adults are often rendered “invisible” in skeletal assemblages due to methodological and cultural biases. This thesis addresses this gap through a rare, community-based study of aging among the Székely population of Transylvania. By integrating osteological analysis of individuals (11th–19th centuries) from the archaeological Papdomb church cemetery with demographic data derived from the modern cemetery headstones (ca.1850–present), this research examines patterns of aging, longevity, and elder visibility across a culturally and spatially …

Behind The Bar: How Bartenders And Regulars Co-Produce Guardianship In Neighborhood Bars, Jack I. Wexler Mar 2026

Behind The Bar: How Bartenders And Regulars Co-Produce Guardianship In Neighborhood Bars, Jack I. Wexler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although bars are commonly conceptualized as sites of disorder and violence, they are also spaces where social order is routinely produced and maintained. Bars are frequent targets of crime prevention efforts because they tend to concentrate aggression, disorder, and crime; yet little is known about how barroom actors—owners, bartenders, and regular patrons—actively maintain order. Explanations typically emphasize (a) physical features of bars (layout, lighting, crowding, door policies), (b) individual and situational predictors (clientele mix, intoxication levels), and (c) the actions of formal controllers—owners, bartenders, and bouncers. I consider an additional, and overlooked informal controller: the bar regular. This qualitative, exploratory …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Background: Management of severe malocclusion in patients with chronic periodontitis poses significant challenges due to compromised periodontal support and alveolar bone loss. Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) may facilitate tooth movement while promoting bone regeneration in such cases.

Case presentation: A 33-year-old male with chronic periodontitis and severe malocclusion presented for orthodontic correction. Initial treatment included comprehensive periodontal therapy—oral hygiene control, open-flap debridement, and bone grafting—prior to orthodontic intervention. Congenital absence of tooth 12 resulted in mesial drift, and teeth 17, 24, and 27 were extracted due to poor prognosis. Despite initial periodontal improvement, inflammation and labial plate collapse at …

Correction Of Facial Asymmetry Using Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Combined With Anterior Mandibular Midline Split And Genioplasty, Po-Yu Yang, Chia-Tze Kao, Yi-Chieh Chen, Wen-Ken Tai Mar 2026

Correction Of Facial Asymmetry Using Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Combined With Anterior Mandibular Midline Split And Genioplasty, Po-Yu Yang, Chia-Tze Kao, Yi-Chieh Chen, Wen-Ken Tai

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Facial asymmetry accounts for approximately two-thirds of orthognathic surgical patients and may involve discrepancies in any of the three spatial planes. Conventional bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) has limitations in correcting patients with significant discrepancies in bilateral ramus angles. This paper proposes a novel surgical approach for the correction of facial asymmetry using BSSO combined with an anterior midline mandibular split osteotomy and genioplasty.

A 30-year-old woman presented with a skeletal Class III pattern, occlusal canting, and a 3-mm deviation of the chin to the right. Intraoral examination revealed an anterior crossbite, dental midline deviation, and a left Angle’s Class …

To Extract Or Not To Extract: On What Basis Do We Make That Decision? (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen Mar 2026

To Extract Or Not To Extract: On What Basis Do We Make That Decision? (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

The most common extraction pattern in orthodontic patients with crowding of the teeth is the four first bicuspids. This is usually done in cases with severe crowding or bimaxillary protrusion. In some instances, orthodontists have decided, instead of extracting the first bicuspids, to extract the second bicuspids, for various reasons that we shall discuss in this review. Several other extraction patterns have also been implemented in the past, including second molars, lower incisors, and even asymmetric extractions. In this review, we shall discuss the pros and cons of each of these choices. In some patients, clinicians have even decided to …

Property In The Short Twentieth Century, Fernando Atria Mar 2026

Property In The Short Twentieth Century, Fernando Atria

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

This article examines the evolution of property law in the "short twentieth century," focusing on the shift from a classical, unified, and individualistic concept of property toward one defined by its "social function." Drawing on Anna di Robilant's historical analysis and legal developments in Chile, the article discusses three interrelated strands of the social critique of property: the doctrine of abuse of right, the concept of the social function of property, and the pluralist ("tree-like") model of property regimes. It contrasts the Will Theory and Interest Theory of rights to clarify the nature of "fractured rights," where legal powers may …
