Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Women In Counseling For Body Dysmorphia, Sitonja Valenzuela

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American women may experience body dysmorphia differently due to cultural, racial, and societal influences that shape their body perceptions and counseling experiences. Guided by a Heideggerian theoretical foundation, this hermeneutic phenomenological study aimed to explore how African American women experience receiving counseling for body dysmorphia in the United States. The guiding research question was: How do African American women with body dysmorphia experience receiving help in counseling? Eight African American women participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews, and data analytic procedures were analyzed using the hermeneutic circle. Key findings revealed body dysmorphia as a persistent, embodied experience shaped by racialized …

The role of the cohesin complex depends on the cohesin loader proteins NIPBL and MAU2. While NIPBL variants are a major cause of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), the role of MAU2 in disease is unclear. We describe 18 individuals carrying 15 heterozygous MAU2 variants and demonstrate pathogenicity through functional analyses. In-frame MAU2 variants predominantly impair NIPBL-MAU2 interaction, whereas truncating variants cause MAU2 haploinsufficiency and lead to NIPBL reduction. Most individuals exhibit a DNA methylation profile compatible with the CdLS episignature. We also describe two MAU2-specific episignatures that reflect variant-dependent molecular consequences. Affected individuals display a wide range of phenotypes, …

Multiplex Functional Assessment Of Variant Effect In The Retinal Transcription Factor Crx, James Lewis Shepherdson Mar 2026

Multiplex Functional Assessment Of Variant Effect In The Retinal Transcription Factor Crx, James Lewis Shepherdson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The transcription factor Cone-Rod Homeobox (CRX) is a master regulator of photoreceptor cell fate. Sequence variants in CRX can cause Retinitis Pigmentosa, Cone-Rod Dystrophy, and Leber Congenital Amaurosis, all inherited causes of vision loss and blindness. CRX is the only gene implicated in the pathogenesis of all three of these diseases, which present with both rod- and cone-centric phenotypes of varying age of onset and severity. Several CRX variants have been reported to cause severe dominant disease through antimorphic genetic interactions with wild-type CRX, and yet these mutations are adjacent to variants which are benign or only cause mild, recessive …

Stream Biofilms In West Tennessee Provide Insights As A Tool For Informing Restoration Practices, Kimberly Elizabeth Baldwin Mar 2026

Stream Biofilms In West Tennessee Provide Insights As A Tool For Informing Restoration Practices, Kimberly Elizabeth Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Many streams in West Tennessee, USA, have been heavily modified for agriculture or flood prevention purposes, which can result in altered stream microbial community dynamics. There is little research comparing biological and physicochemical dynamics between disturbed and natural streams, especially in West Tennessee. There is a need to understand how restoration efforts may impact microbial communities and thus ecosystem processing. Here, we investigate the community and assembly dynamics of microbial communities (prokaryotic and eukaryotic) in a degraded stream slated for restoration by 1) comparing this disturbed site to an undisturbed control stream, 2) examining seasonal variation of biofilms and riparian …

Works Of Michael Kahle; Expanding The Viola's Role Within The Classical Music Canon, Andrew Scott Mcguire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project reexamines the role of the viola within the classical canon, arguing for its repositioning as a melodic and collaborative instrument rather than a purely supportive inner voice. Analytical and experiential findings demonstrate that the viola’s capacity to modify articulation, timbre, and projection enables it to mediate between contrasting instrumental families such as bowed strings, winds, and percussion. Grounded in performance-based research, this study investigates the viola’s function in non-traditional chamber ensembles, with particular repertoire development through collaboration with composer Michael Kahle, whose works for mixed ensembles—including flute, vibraphone, oboe, piano, and wind ensemble—feature the viola as a primary …

“At That Point You Aren’T Even A Teacher”: Literacy Teacher Resistance In The Age Of The Edtech Panopticon, Dallas Joseph Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The growth of digital education programs in public education, combined with increased legislative restrictions, has created an environment where literacy and English Language Arts teachers are working under complex networks of surveillance and control, where curriculum materials are provided to them by outside designers. Teachers who have ideological or moral issue with the supplied materials may choose to resist and subvert. Previous research in teacher resistance highlights instructional strategies educators used in the pre-and-early digital era: class discussion, subversive reading, and leveraging institutional authority and experience. This dissertation analyzes qualitative interview data gathered from four high school English Language Arts …

All Decisions

In this licensee holdover under RPAPL § 713, court denies respondents' motion to dismiss and grants petitioner's cross-motion for summary judgment. Respondents found to be licensees, not tenants, because they lacked exclusive control and possession of a defined space — they slept in a curtained-off portion of the living room/kitchen. Rent payments alone did not create a tenancy where none was contemplated.

The Core-Modulation Architecture (Cma): A Structural Overview Of A 14-Paper Research Program (Preprint), Griselda Poe

Publications and Research

This document provides a structural overview of the Core-Modulation Architecture (CMA), a 14-paper research program on cognition, communication, and AI interaction.

The series specifies the conditions under which cognition operates, terminates, fails, and generates structure. Rather than describing cognition by its contents (beliefs, emotions, decisions), it defines cognition through its underlying architecture: constraint-governed processing across layers with distinct termination conditions.

The framework introduces a layered model consisting of Core processing (constraint preservation and structural coherence) and Modulation (affective calibration and social interface adjustment), extended by a Prior layer as the source of constraints. Across the series, phenomena such as miscommunication, …

This study is guided by Human Capital Theory and Self-Determination Theory, analyzing …

Constraint, Necessity, And God Beyond Structure: A Structural Account Of Suffering Under Three-Layer Cognitive Architecture, Griselda Poe Mar 2026

Constraint, Necessity, And God Beyond Structure: A Structural Account Of Suffering Under Three-Layer Cognitive Architecture, Griselda Poe

Publications and Research

The question of why humans suffer, if God exists, has persisted across philosophical and theological traditions without resolution. This paper does not approach the problem as one of justification. Instead, it specifies the structural conditions under which suffering arises. The analysis adopts a three-layer model of cognition consisting of a Prior layer, a Core processing layer, and a Modulation layer. The Prior layer supplies constraints that initiate processing but remain inaccessible to it. Under these constraints, cognition begins in a non-neutral state in which one layer is initially foregrounded. When Modulation-layer processing is foregrounded, the condition of translation demands continuation. …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Fe-N-C catalysts have long suffered from kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to excessive adsorption strength toward oxygen intermediates and low site utilization. Heteroatom doping effectively accelerates ORR reaction kinetics through electronic structure modulation of metal sites for optimal intermediate adsorption, while chemical vapor deposition (CVD) enhances the turnover frequency (TOF) of active sites. Herein, we developed an FeSNC catalyst featuring abundant FeS1N4 sites via a dual-precursor CVD strategy. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that S incorporation disrupts the symmetric coordination of active sites, which optimizes OH* adsorption energies from 0.212 eV to 1.194 eV. Moreover, …

Entropy Of Metal/Solution Interfaces: Thermodynamic Framework, Theoretical Models, And Roles Of Interfacial Water, Zeng-Ming Zhang, Zi-Xi Liang, Jun Huang Mar 2026

Entropy Of Metal/Solution Interfaces: Thermodynamic Framework, Theoretical Models, And Roles Of Interfacial Water, Zeng-Ming Zhang, Zi-Xi Liang, Jun Huang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Entropy is a basic thermodynamic property of the electrical double layer (EDL) at metal/solution interfaces, yet, its definition, measurement, and theoretical treatment are dispersed in the literature, and, in some cases, ambiguous. In this paper, we revisit the thermodynamic theory of EDL, from which two variants of entropy, excess entropy and formation entropy, are obtained and compared. In terms of the formation entropy, two calculation routes are validated in the context of a primitive EDL model, namely, the Gouy-Chapman (GC) model. After clarifying the concepts and calculation routes, we investigate interfacial water effects on the EDL entropy, using a refined …
