Want To Be A Higher Education President? A Comparative Case Study Of The Traits, Attributes, And Skills Of Four Current Higher Education Presidents, Brian C. Nees
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This qualitative study is a comparative case study of higher education presidents. It examines how current higher education presidents described the essential traits, attributes, and skills of the position and whether these presidents have always possessed them or acquired them over time and through experience. This topic is essential, as it appears that presidents are leaving their positions sooner, and this research provides incoming presidents with preparation advice and current presidents with advice to help them stay in their positions longer. The data were obtained through resumes, a trait questionnaire, and interviews with current higher education presidents. These three data …
Narratives Of Dis-Ease: A Genre Study Of Pathography, Sylvelyn Jo A. Almanzor
Narratives Of Dis-Ease: A Genre Study Of Pathography, Sylvelyn Jo A. Almanzor
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This essay establishes pathography as a distinct genre of creative nonfiction, tracing the development, form, and cultural significance of this body of literature. I have broadly defined it as narratives on personal experiences of Gabriel Marcel's "dis-ease"—covering and critiquing the human understanding and experience of sickness, pain, and grief—which has evolved from autobiographical narratives and life-writing of patients and medical professionals to a recognized form of creative nonfiction. This study will analyze the genre's structure, themes, and rhetorical strategies with consideration to cultural significance and how it negotiates the human understanding of suffering, healing, and societal attitudes toward existence and …
Gregor Samsa’S Pagkagimata (Awakening) In Bikol: A Becoming-Minor In Translation, Victor John M. Loquias
Gregor Samsa’S Pagkagimata (Awakening) In Bikol: A Becoming-Minor In Translation, Victor John M. Loquias
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
Kristian Cordero’s translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis instantiates what the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari call minor literature. Preferring the Bikol term Pagkagimata—the literal event of Gregor Sama’s becoming-animal in the novel as title of the translation and the utilization of the Rinconada Bikol language for the transformed Samsa—Cordero has typified a perspective of translation that challenges the popular view of fluent translation from the source text to the target language. Exemplifying the concept of becoming-minor of Deleuze and Guattari and deploying Lawrence Venuti’s notion of the “remainder,” An Pagkagimata ni Gregor Samsa exhibits a deterritorialization of Bikol …
Reimagining Civic Readiness: Middle School Teachers’ Definition And Perceptions Of The Importance Of Civic Readiness, Razak K. Dwomoh
Reimagining Civic Readiness: Middle School Teachers’ Definition And Perceptions Of The Importance Of Civic Readiness, Razak K. Dwomoh
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This article examines how middle school social studies teachers define “civic readiness,” how teacher motivation shapes civics instruction, and why middle-level civics is integral to engaged citizenship. The paper presents teachers as “curricular instructional gatekeepers” and argues that civic readiness (preparedness/willingness) differs significantly from civic competence (mastery) in terms of meaning, scope, and outcomes, proposing a four-staged pathway from readiness to engagement, then development, and finally to competence. It further provides an overview of three interrelated concepts (academic readiness, college readiness, and career readiness) to juxtapose civic readiness within the larger literary discourse. The …
Making Social Studies Work In The Age Of Ai, Angelo Letizia
Making Social Studies Work In The Age Of Ai, Angelo Letizia
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The purpose of this paper is to first outline a more embedded stance toward AI use, which I have labeled invisible philosophy and history as DNA and use this embedded framework as a backdrop for a more concrete discussion of skills and dispositions in regard to the use of AI in the social studies classroom and beyond. This dual positioning, one more theoretical and one more concrete, calls attention to the fact that AI should not simply be seen as some flashy tool divorced from a more nuanced and embedded understanding of its role in society. A list of practical …

Hitler Must Be Killed: A Wwii Case Study, Jeffrey Byford, Presley Shilling, Alisha Milam
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Social studies education during the 1960s experienced an educational renaissance known as the new social studies movement. Over 50 projects were funded by the National Science Foundation or private corporations to interject a student-centered curriculum into K-12 classrooms during this period. Nearly 60 years later, can student-centered decision-making activities be used in an era of high-stakes testing and planned curriculum? This article attempts to rekindle students' interest in decision-making and discussion by exploring elements in Moral Reasoning: The Value of Life from the Harvard Social Studies Project (HSSP). The activity called "Hitler Must Be Killed" helped students bring the content …
Elementary Abelian Sylow Subgroups Of The Multiplicative Group, Geremías Polanco
Elementary Abelian Sylow Subgroups Of The Multiplicative Group, Geremías Polanco
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Erdős and Pomerance have shown that 𝜑(𝑛) typically has about 1 2 (loglog𝑛)2 distinct prime factors. More precisely, 𝜔(𝜑(𝑛)) has normal order 1 2 (loglog𝑛)2. Since 𝜑(𝑛) is the size of the multiplicative group (𝐙/𝑛𝐙)×, this result also gives the normal number of Sylow subgroups of (𝐙/𝑛𝐙)×. Recently, Pollack considered specifically noncyclic Sylow subgroups of (𝐙/𝑛𝐙)×, showing that the count of those has normal order loglog𝑛/logloglog𝑛. We prove that the count of noncyclic Sylow subgroups that are elementary abelian of a fixed rank 𝑘 ≥2 has normal order 1 𝑘(𝑘−1) loglog𝑛/logloglog𝑛. So for example, (typically) among the primes p for …

Probability Of Fentanyl Adulteration In Cocaine Selectively Decreases Cocaine Demand, Cecilia Nunez, Jin H Yoon, James Mackillop, Margaret C Wardle
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Fentanyl-related, cocaine-overdose deaths have drastically increased, yet research on how people who use cocaine perceive fentanyl adulteration is limited. This study developed the novel Adulterated Cocaine Purchasing Task (ACocPT), a modification of the original Cocaine Purchasing Task, to quantify how people respond to fentanyl adulteration in cocaine. In the ACocPT, participants indicated how much cocaine they would purchase when cocaine had no (0%) vs. some (10%) probability of fentanyl adulteration. Study aims were: 1) determine how possible fentanyl adulteration affects cocaine demand, and 2) determine which individual characteristics predict continued demand for cocaine despite fentanyl adulteration. This Amazon Mechanical Turk …

Myocardial metabolic flexibility is critical to ensuring the heart's capacity to maintain contraction and cellular functions under rapidly evolving environmental conditions. Although it is a tightly regulated process, loss of metabolic flexibility is often regarded as a contributing factor to heart failure. This study aims to determine the effects of the early response transcription factor nuclear receptor subfamily 4 group A member 2 (NR4A2) on cardiac metabolism and the resulting impact on left ventricular function. A multiomics approach combining the analysis of global ventricular gene expression, genome-wide NR4A2 binding, and untargeted metabolomics was used to track the molecular effects of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Food security is a multifaceted, ‘wicked’ issue that refers to the sufficient physical, social, and economic access to food at all times. Given its complexity, food security action requires a systems-based, collaborative, and adaptive approach. This paper outlines the application of a strengths-based, co-design process to support food security systems change among government and community-led initiatives operating in rural, regional, and remote areas of Western Australia. Baseline, semistructured interviews were conducted with leaders of food initiatives to understand whether and how the initiatives were contributing to food security systems change and identify the ‘windows of opportunity’ where initiatives could be …

Federated Retrieval-Augmented Generation For Cybersecurity In Resource-Constrained Iot And Edge Environments: A Deployment-Oriented Scoping Review, Hangyu He, Yuan, Kai Wu, Wei Ni
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Cybersecurity operations in IoT and edge environments require fast, evidence-grounded decisions under strict resource and trust constraints. While large language models can support triage and incident analysis, their parametric knowledge may be outdated and prone to hallucination. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) improves grounding by conditioning responses on retrieved evidence, but also introduces new risks such as knowledge-base poisoning, indirect prompt injection, and embedding leakage. Federated learning enables collaborative adaptation without centralizing sensitive data, motivating federated RAG (FedRAG) architectures for distributed cybersecurity deployments. This study presents a deployment-oriented scoping review of FedRAG for cybersecurity. The review follows PRISMA-ScR reporting guidance and synthesizes …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Samples from the upper 300 m along the 52°S band, south of the Antarctic Polar Front in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, including a 3-week monitoring of a persistent bloom, were analyzed to advance our understanding of iron cycling and supply to recurrent phytoplankton blooms. We measured dissolved Fe (dFe, <0.2 μm) and labile particulate iron using a mild acid leach (pLFe48h) targeting primarily detrital and fecal material. Particulate iron was partitioned into size classes to distinguish small, “slow” sinking particles (<53 μm) from large, “fast” sinking particles (>53 μm), while intermediate fractions were analyzed to investigate aggregation and export processes. Across all stations, dFe exhibited a consistent vertical structure, including a previously undescribed …53>0.2>
Impending-Exit Period And Employee Performance: Rethinking Human Capital Disruption, Yea Hee Ko, Charlie O. Trevor
Impending-Exit Period And Employee Performance: Rethinking Human Capital Disruption, Yea Hee Ko, Charlie O. Trevor
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The well-established disruptive effects of employee turnover on firms have typically been attributed to post-exit dynamics, such as losses of human and social capital. Little is known, however, about leavers’ pre-exit job performance, which, if declining in sufficient magnitude as separation nears, may drive some of this disruption. Drawing on career concerns research, we argue that impending exit weakens incentives to improve future career prospects at the firm, thereby resulting in reduced performance. Our analysis reveals strikingly large negative relationships, as job performance during the impending-exit period declines by 53.9% and 79.8% across two performance measures. Additionally, we predict and …

The Robin Hood Effect In Transgressions Against Firms: How Political Ideology Shapes Consumer Justifications, Jason D. Lin, Anat Keinan, Hannah H. Chang, Donald R. Lehmann
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Consumer transgressions against firms involve moral violations in which consumers take advantage of loopholes in companies’ return and satisfaction-guaranteed policies or the lack of strict enforcement against password sharing, piracy, shoplifting, wardrobing, coupon stacking, promotion abuse, and fraud. Drawing on the timeless tale of Robin Hood, the legendary outlaw who stands up against injustice, the authors demonstrate that consumers use a Robin Hood justification to legitimize their transgressions against firms. Building on moral foundations theory, this research demonstrates that political ideology impacts consumers’ transgression behavior and the perceived morality of these practices. Six studies show that under certain conditions in …

Fixed Effects Estimation Of Spatial Panel Model With Missing Responses: An Application To Us State Tax Competition, Xiaoyu Meng, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider estimation and inferences for general spatial panel data models with randomly missing observations on responses. It allows for unobserved spatiotemporal heterogeneity, time-varying endogenous and contextual spatial interactions, time-varying cross-sectional error dependence, and serial correlation. A general M-estimation method is proposed for model estimation and a novel corrected plug-in method is proposed for model inference. Both take into account the estimation of fixed effects. Asymptotic properties of the proposed methods are studied, and finite sample properties are investigated. An empirical application is given using U.S. state tax competition data. We consider spatial panel data models with genuine unbalancedness arising from the non-presence of some spatial units in certain time periods. General M-estimation methods are proposed for model estimation, which take into account the estimation of the incidental fixed effects parameters and allow for spatiotemporal heteroskedasticity and high-order time-varying spatial effects. Corrected plug-in methods are proposed for standard error estimation. The proposed estimation and inference methods are rigorously studied for their asymptotic properties and finite sample performance. An application to China’s provincial FDI inflows shows that properly accounting for genuine unbalancedness uncovers significant positive spatial spillovers that are masked when …
