Gentlewomen Of The Jury, Vivian N. Rotenstein, Valerie P. Hans
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This Article undertakes a contemporary assessment of the role of women on the jury. In 1946, at a time when few women served on U.S. juries, the all-male Supreme Court opined in Ballard v. United States: “The truth is that the two sexes are not fungible; a community made up exclusively of one is different from a community composed of both; the subtle interplay of influence of one on the other is among the imponderables.” Three-quarters of a century later, women’s legal and social status has changed dramatically, with increased participation in the labor force, expanded leadership roles, and the …
Censorship, Pandemic, And The Field Of Power: The Death And Revival Of A Chinese War Epic, Zhaoxi Liu
Censorship, Pandemic, And The Field Of Power: The Death And Revival Of A Chinese War Epic, Zhaoxi Liu
Communication Faculty Research
This case study examines the dramatic change of fortune of the Chinese war epic “The Eight Hundred”. The movie was censored in 2019 during China’s celebration of the country’s 70th anniversary but became the market-saving hero in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Through the lens of Bourdieu’s theory of the field of cultural production, this study argues that the movie’s changing fate is essentially the change of its political, symbolic and economic capitals, under different field conditions. The subfield of commercial films in China is subject to the control of political and economic forces in the field …

Non-Localized Physical Processes Can Help Speed Up Computations, Be It Hidden Variables In Quantum Physics Or Non-Localized Energy In General Relativity, Michael Zakharevich, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
While most physical processes are localized -- in the sense that each event can only affect events in its close vicinity -- many physicists believe that some processes are non-local. These beliefs range from more heretic -- such as hidden variables in quantum physics -- to more widely accepted, such as the non-local character of energy in General Relativity. In this paper, we attract attention to the fact that non-local processes bring in the possibility of drastically speeding up computations.

Graph Approach To Uncertainty Quantification, Hector A. Reyes, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional analysis of uncertainty of the result of data processing assumes that all measurement errors are independent. In reality, there may be common factor affecting these errors, so these errors may be dependent. In such cases, the independence assumption may lead to underestimation of uncertainty. In such cases, a guaranteed way to be on the safe side is to make no assumption about independence at all. In practice, however, we may have information that a few pairs of measurement errors are indeed independent -- while we still have no information about all other pairs. Alternatively, we may suspect that for …

Systems Approach Explains Why Low Heart Rate Variability Is Correlated With Depression (And Suicidal Thoughts), Francisco Zapata, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Depression is a serious medical problem. If diagnosed early, it can usually be cured, but if left undetected, it can lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior. The early stages of depression are difficult to diagnose. Recently, researchers found a promising approach to such diagnosis -- it turns out that depression is correlated with low heart rate variability. In this paper, we show that the general systems approach can explain this empirical relation.

Will Nanotechnology Bring In The Judgement Day?, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
There are many current and prospective positive aspects of nanotechnology. However, while we look forward to its future successes, we need to keep our eyes open and be prepared for what will really be a future shock: that quantum computing – an inevitable part of nanotechnology – will enable the future folks to read all our encrypted messages and thus, learn everything that we wanted to keep secret. This will be really the Judgement Day, when all our sins will be open to everyone. How we will react to it? Will this destroy our civilization? Let us hope that the …

Student Government And The University Administrative Agenda Alignment, James M. Diloreto-Hill
Journal of Research on the College President
Within institutions of higher education, shared governance is an essential component to a healthy functionality. Among the many stakeholders at these institutions, students are the largest in number and hold primacy. Participation in student governance establishes a sense of shared ownership over their communities while also providing a unique avenue for students to gain wisdom and develop critical skill sets. Senior administrators at these institutions have many inherent challenges due to an organization that is largely decentralized and autonomous. The purpose for conducting this study was to analyze Student Government Associations (SGA) at 8 select land-grant institutions of higher education …

Effects And Outcomes Of Different Laboring Positions And The Influence From Societal Norms, Amberlyn Heskett
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background
Within labor and delivery, every birth is different. Alarmingly, the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate, including death during labor, among developed countries (World Health Organization, 2022). Many maternal deaths may be preventable.
In the U.S., the use of forceps, vacuum-assisted birth, episiotomies, and emergency C-sections are common for women during childbirth. Even though some laboring positions may assist birthing more than others, there often is resistance to allowing various positions due to outside influences, including societal norms, hospital management, and healthcare professional training. Women in labor are vulnerable and look to their nurses for support during the …

We introduce EUREKA, an ensemble-based approach for performing automatic euphemism detection. We (1) identify and correct potentially mislabelled rows in the dataset, (2) curate an expanded corpus called EuphAug, (3) leverage model representations of Potentially Euphemistic Terms (PETs), and (4) explore using representations of semantically close sentences to aid in classification. Using our augmented dataset and kNN-based methods, EUREKA was able to achieve state-of-the-art results on the public leaderboard of the Euphemism Detection Shared Task, ranking first with a macro F1 score of 0.881.

This project uses real-world financial statements (for Best Buy Co. Inc. and Nvidia Corporation) and creates a role-playing game where students can choose to be one of 4 capital market participants: an innovator that designs a brand-new accounting system, a company that prepares its best version of financial statements, an investor that chooses its ideal portfolio stocks, and a forensic accountant that looks for evidence of earnings management. The project helps student learn to conduct financial statement analysis and appreciate the impact of these statements on company financial ratios and capital market performance.

Predictions And Drivers Of Sub-Reach-Scale Annual Streamflow Permanence For The Upper Missouri River Basin: 1989–2018, Kendra E. Kaiser
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The presence of year-round surface water in streams (i.e., streamflow permanence) is an important factor for identifying aquatic habitat availability, determining the regulatory status of streams, managing land use change, allocating water resources, and designing scientific studies. However, accurate, high resolution, and dynamic prediction of streamflow permanence that accounts for year-to-year variability at a regional extent is a major gap in modeling capability. Herein, we expand and adapt the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) PRObability of Streamflow PERmanence (PROSPER) model from its original implementation in the Pacific Northwest (PROSPERPNW) to the upper Missouri River basin (PROSPERUM), a …

The Formation Of The 8˚20’ N Seamount Chain, East Pacific Rise, Dorsey Wanless
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Near-axis seamounts provide a unique setting to investigate three-dimensional mantle processes associated with the formation of new oceanic crust and lithosphere. Here, we investigate the characteristics and evolution of the 8˚20’N Seamount Chain, a lineament of seamounts that extends ~ 175 km west of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) axis, just north of the fracture zone of the Siqueiros Transform Fault. Shipboard gravity, magnetic, and bathymetric data acquired in 2016 are utilized to constrain models of seamount emplacement and evolution. Geophysical observations indicate that these seamounts formed during four distinct episodes of volcanism coinciding with changes in regional plate motion …
Contact Center Healthcare Worker Stress Levels During Times Of Rapid Change, Christine Dvorak
Contact Center Healthcare Worker Stress Levels During Times Of Rapid Change, Christine Dvorak
Leadership Education Capstones
The purpose of this study is to explore the factors contributing to stress during times of rapid change with healthcare staff working behind the scenes in a contact center. This study will focus on contact center employees working in a healthcare setting where rapid change is frequent and how this impacts individual stress levels. The research currently shows that burnout and increased stress is on the rise for the front-line staff working in healthcare (Meese et al., 2021). To better support contact center employees, it will be imperative to understand the causes of stress and burnout in their roles. Once …

Mongo Beti Tel Qu’En Lui-Même : Portrait D’Un Loup Solitaire, Ambroise Kom
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The present article is essentially an analysis of letters exchange between Mongo Beti and Présence Africaine, the publishing house that edited his first novel, Cruel City (1954). Reading the said letters informs us much about the pamphleteer’s character and personality as we will discover them much more clearly in Mongo Beti à Yaoundé (2005), a collection of media interventions published during some ten years stay in Cameroon after he returns from his long exile in France.

Poverty is a persistent problem in the United States. In 2020, the poverty rate in the United States was 11.4% ("Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2020"). Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) is the main basic assistance program for families living in poverty in the United States. It was enacted in 1995 to reform the previous basic assistance program for families, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) (Corbett 2013). Unlike its predecessor, on top of providing income to families when a parent or guardian could not, TANF is designed to reduce dependency on welfare. …
The Relationship Between Residential Land-Use Regulations And Regional Air Pollutants, Caren Royce Yap
The Relationship Between Residential Land-Use Regulations And Regional Air Pollutants, Caren Royce Yap
Student Research
As cities continue to grow at exponential rates, land use regulations, specifically density restrictions, have been implemented to mitigate economic effects, from increasing housing prices to difficult public transportation construction. These regulations range in type, taking into account factors regarding the most effective urban form for cities and recently the presence of COVID-19. Land use effects on housing prices are also adjacent to tackle the climate crisis. Two of the most common air pollutants, PM 2.5 and Ozone, are run in a comparative analysis to areas with varying measures of density restrictions to detect a possible association using multiple regression …

Bostock And Textualism: A Response To Berman And Krishnamurthi, Andrew Koppelman
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
The Bostock Court adopted an argument I’ve been making for years, and that I pressed upon it in an amicus brief: that discrimina-tion against gay people is necessarily sex discrimination. I defended Justice Neil Gorsuch’s opinion for the Court in my article, Bostock, LGBT Discrimination, and the Subtractive Moves, which catalogues various common but unsuccessful strategies for evading the force of the sex discrimination argument. That piece, originally drafted before the Supreme Court’s decision as a critique of arguments by Court of Appeals judges, was easy to revise and update. The dissenters, Justices Samuel Alito (joined by Clarence …

On The Rightful Deprivation Of Rights, Frederick Schauer
On The Rightful Deprivation Of Rights, Frederick Schauer
Notre Dame Law Review
When people are deprived of their property rights so that the state can build a highway, a school, or a hospital, they are typically compensated through what is commonly referred to as “takings” doctrine. But when people are deprived of their free speech rights because of a clear and present danger, or deprived of their equal protection, due process, or free exercise rights because of a “compelling” governmental interest, they typically get nothing. Why this is so, and whether it should be so, is the puzzle that motivates this Article. Drawing on the philosophical literature on conflicts of rights and …

“We don’t believe in vampires.”
I didn’t bother to turn away from the TV to look at my parents. On screen, a crew of young men were interviewing an old woman. She spoke only Romanian, and a too-perfect female voice spoke for her in English. I could see the confident fear in her expression as she exclaimed that vampires were indeed real and that she was always scared of them. She wasn’t alone. All of Transylvania were aware of the existence of vampires. Truly, these young men— ghost hunters and cryptologists—were right to come here to this haunted nation. The …
