An Artist’S Playground: Building Bridges Between Children’S Education And Their Knowledge Of Art Through Multi-Modal Learning, Alice J. Cauchi Apr 2026

An Artist’S Playground: Building Bridges Between Children’S Education And Their Knowledge Of Art Through Multi-Modal Learning, Alice J. Cauchi

Theses

Not all museums welcome children as part of their main audience with open arms. Research suggests that experiencing museums as a child supports classroom learning and development, but only when the museums engage young children properly. This paper explores how incorporating multi-modal interactives into art museums can effectively engage children, ages 4 to 8, and build a foundation that supports lifelong learning. Drawing on ideas from early-childhood education, museum visitor-engagement studies, and interactivity sciences, this project results in a framework that guides art museums on how they can overlap play, interactives, and content to incorporate this age group effectively to …

Improving Bedside Nurse Central Line Policy Compliance And Combating Clabsis, Keyshawna N. Chambers Apr 2026

Improving Bedside Nurse Central Line Policy Compliance And Combating Clabsis, Keyshawna N. Chambers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract

Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a problem, both globally and locally at this 20-bed pediatric cardiovascular ICU in Houston, TX. Bedside nursing staff had gaps in knowledge of central line policies and were often unaware of when dressings needed to be changed. This posed a significant concern, as this nosocomial infection is among the most life-threatening and costly complications in healthcare. Leadership attempted to correct this issue with weekly multidisciplinary rounds, but with high turnover, this was not a long-term fix. This quality improvement project aimed to increase central line policy compliance among bedside nursing staff to 93%, from …

Artificial Intelligence In Human Spaceflight Safety-Critical Systems: A Requirements Framework For Ai-Enabled Computer-Based Control Systems, Liz Bosch Apr 2026

Artificial Intelligence In Human Spaceflight Safety-Critical Systems: A Requirements Framework For Ai-Enabled Computer-Based Control Systems, Liz Bosch

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Currently, there is no governing standard that addresses the safe integration of AI into computer-based control systems (CBCS) in human spaceflight. The computer-based control expectations of those safety-critical systems on the International Space Station (ISS) are captured in SSP 50038, Computer-Based Control System Safety Requirements, with one caveat: the standard was not designed with AI applications in mind. SSP 50038 does not cover the probabilistic behavior, opacity, and training-data dependency of modern AI/ML systems. The objectives of this work is to develop an AI taxonomy relevant to safety characteristics (determinism, transparency, data dependency, failure predictability), systematically map AI characteristics against …

Restoration Of Dental Implants With Screw-Retained Crowns: Optimizing Contact Area Geometry To Prevent Food Impaction, John S. Mamoun D.M.D. Apr 2026

Restoration Of Dental Implants With Screw-Retained Crowns: Optimizing Contact Area Geometry To Prevent Food Impaction, John S. Mamoun D.M.D.

The New York State Dental Journal

A single-unit, screw-retained fixed partial denture or crown, made for a dental implant, may show food impaction between the screw-retained crown and an inter-proximal tooth surface. This restorative error may be due to an open contact or a large interproximal embrasure space volume between the screw-retained prosthesis and an interproximal tooth surface. Food impaction may also occur due to the contact plane of the restoration being parallel with the contact plane of the neighboring tooth instead of a more correct contact plane geometry where both interproximal contact planes converge slightly towards each other to form a “triangular” embrasure space. These …

Resolution Of Severe Lateral Open Bite With Surgically Enhanced Orthodontic And Myofunctional Therapies, Daniel Kuncio D.D.S., Maria Karpov D.M.D. Apr 2026

Resolution Of Severe Lateral Open Bite With Surgically Enhanced Orthodontic And Myofunctional Therapies, Daniel Kuncio D.D.S., Maria Karpov D.M.D.

The New York State Dental Journal

Patients often present to our practices with dental relapse of previous orthodontic treatment. Many times, the underlying skeletal and/or functional problems leading to the malocclusion were not addressed, causing the teeth to revert to their initial positions, even with good retainer wear. This patient presented with a severe lateral open bite and complained of problems chewing on his right side.

Previous orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontics appliances and vertical elastics proved to be unstable. We recommended a treatment plan with surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) to correct the skeletal maxillary constriction and provide more tongue space, followed by surgically …

The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder Apr 2026

The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder

Libraries Undergraduate Research Award (LURA) Winners

Much of the global population suffers from headache disorders like migraine. Because there are so many triggers and unknown explanations for migraine, it can be hard to find effective treatments for it. There are some studies that point to inflammation as either a cause or result of headache disorders; therefore, it is natural that we should explore the possibility of inflammation reducing factors when considering treatment options. The factor being explored in this review is magnesium supplementation, which has been shown to reduce inflammation by decreasing the amount of calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP) in circulation. There is a clear link between migraine …

Modeling And Autonomous Control Systems For A Delivery Drone Application, Dana Helal Alnuaimi

Theses

This thesis focuses on the development of a multi-drone navigation and control system, aiming to enhance payload capacities beyond the limits of single-drone systems. By integrating multiple drones to work collaboratively as a unit, this study addresses the challenges associated with lifting and transporting heavier payloads.

The primary objective is to design and evaluate a multi-drone system capable of working in tandem to transport larger payloads efficiently. The research aims to develop robust control algorithms, supported by system identification for dynamic modeling, and navigation strategies to enable effective coordination between drones.

The study employs a combination of simulation and real-world …

False Conflict: Colorblindness And Section 2 Of The Voting Rights Act, W. Kerrel Murray Apr 2026

False Conflict: Colorblindness And Section 2 Of The Voting Rights Act, W. Kerrel Murray

Fordham Law Review

If friends and foes of section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 agree on one thing, it is the irrepressible conflict between section 2’s attention to race and constitutional colorblindness. They’re wrong. Rightly understood, section 2’s design is remarkably compatible with colorblind constitutionalism’s letter and spirit.

To show how, this Article first returns to section 2’s origins and the preexisting approach its text codifies. That approach had an underappreciated ethos: When intentional discrimination’s effects sufficiently distort a political system, an electoral rule’s results might impugn its unconstitutionality, even if the rule had been adopted without discriminatory purpose. Drawing …

Agentspec: Customizable Runtime Enforcement For Safe And Reliable Llm Agents, Haoyu Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun Apr 2026

Agentspec: Customizable Runtime Enforcement For Safe And Reliable Llm Agents, Haoyu Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Agents built on LLMs are increasingly deployed across diverse domains, automating complex decision-making and task execution. However, their autonomy introduces safety risks, including security vulnerabilities, legal violations, and unintended harmful actions. Existing mitigation methods, such as model-based safeguards and early enforcement strategies, fall short in robustness, interpretability, and adaptability. To address these challenges, we propose AgentSpec, a lightweight domain-specific language for specifying and enforcing runtime constraints on LLM agents. With AgentSpec, users define structured rules that incorporate triggers, predicates, and enforcement mechanisms, ensuring agents operate within predefined safety boundaries. We implement AgentSpec across multiple domains, including code execution, embodied agents, …

Zero-knowledge Succinct Non-interactive Argument of Knowledge (zkSNARK) is a powerful cryptographic primitive that enables a prover to convince a verifier that something is true without leaking the private witness.Current zkSNARKs face significant computational costs in generating proofs, which restricts their use in areas like private payments, confidential smart contracts, and anonymous credentials. Private delegation offers a practical solution by outsourcing the heavy computation to powerful external workers without leaking any private information. In this work, we propose HyperSiniel, an efficient private delegation framework for general zkSNARKs that achieves a new feature called guaranteed output delivery (GOD). HyperSiniel is designed to …

Bridging Draft Policy Misalignment: Group Tree Optimization For Speculative Decoding, Shijing Hu, Jingyang Li, Zhihui Lu, Pan Zhou Apr 2026

Bridging Draft Policy Misalignment: Group Tree Optimization For Speculative Decoding, Shijing Hu, Jingyang Li, Zhihui Lu, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Speculative decoding accelerates large language model (LLM) inference by letting a lightweight draft model propose multiple tokens that the target model verifies in parallel. Yet existing training objectives optimize only a single greedy draft path, while decoding follows a tree policy that re-ranks and verifies multiple branches. This draft policy misalignment limits achievable speedups. We introduce Group Tree Optimization (GTO), which aligns training with the decoding-time tree policy through two components: (i) Draft Tree Reward, a sampling-free objective equal to the expected acceptance length of the draft tree under the target model, directly measuring decoding performance; (ii) Group-based Draft Policy …

Dragging With Geometry: From Pixels To Geometry-Guided Image Editing, Xinyu Pu, Hongsong Wang, Jie Gui, Pan Zhou Apr 2026

Dragging With Geometry: From Pixels To Geometry-Guided Image Editing, Xinyu Pu, Hongsong Wang, Jie Gui, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interactive point-based image editing serves as a controllable editor, enabling precise and flexible manipulation of image content. However, most drag-based methods operate primarily on the 2D pixel plane with limited use of 3D cues. As a result, they often produce imprecise and inconsistent edits, particularly in geometry-intensive scenarios such as rotations and perspective transformations. To address these limitations, we propose a novel geometry-guided drag-based image editing method—GeoDrag, which addresses three key challenges: 1) incorporating 3D geometric cues into pixel-level editing, 2) mitigating discontinuities caused by geometry-only guidance, and 3) resolving conflicts arising from multi-point dragging. Built upon a unified displacement …

From Spatial To Actions: Grounding Vision-Language-Action Model In Spatial Foundation Priors, Zhengshen Zhang, Hao Li, Yalun Dai, Zhengbang Zhu, Lei Zhou, Chenchen Liu, Dong Wang, Francis E. H. Tay, Sijin Chen, Ziwei Liu, Yuxiao Liu, Xinghang Li, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing vision-language-action (VLA) models act in 3D real-world but are typically built on 2D encoders, leaving a spatial reasoning gap that limits generalization and adaptability. Recent 3D integration techniques for VLAs either require specialized sensors and transfer poorly across modalities, or inject weak cues that lack geometry and degrade vision-language alignment. In this work, we introduce FALCON (From Spatial to Action), a novel paradigm that injects rich 3D spatial tokens into the action head. FALCON leverages spatial foundation models to deliver strong geometric priors from RGB alone, and includes an Embodied Spatial Model that can optionally fuse depth, or pose …

Augmented Advocacy: Ethical Constraints And Regulatory Gaps In Ai-Driven Legal Practice, Molly M. Rowlands

West Virginia Law Review

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and particularly generative AI (“Gen AI”) is reshaping the legal profession in unprecedented ways. AI-powered tools enhance efficiency, improve accuracy in legal analysis, and expand access to justice by automating research, contract review, litigation support, and predictive analytics. However, these benefits come with significant ethical, regulatory, and procedural challenges, including competency concerns and AI “hallucinations,” data confidentiality risks, algorithmic bias, and the environmental impact of AI-driven computing. This Note critically examines the evolving role of AI in legal practice and evaluates the inadequacies of existing regulatory frameworks—such as Rule 11 of the Federal …

Plasmoid Vortex System Retrofit A Sustainability And Efficiency Study On Internal Combustion Engines, Walker Hall Apr 2026

Plasmoid Vortex System Retrofit A Sustainability And Efficiency Study On Internal Combustion Engines, Walker Hall

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The thesis addresses the persistent inefficiency and environmental degradation caused by internal combustion engines in modern vehicles, a major issue as the automotive industry faces increasing pressure to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Internal combustion engines, which power most cars today, convert only about 20-30% of fuel energy into useful work, with the remainder lost as heat and exhaust waste, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This inefficiency contributes to global carbon emissions, with transportation accounting for approximately 29% of U.S. greenhouse gases in 2021 [1]. As regulatory standards tighten (e.g., …

Clothing, Comportment, And Court Femininity In Domenico Ghirlandaio's Portraits Of Elite Florentine Women (C. 1475-1490), Emmerson Stephens Apr 2026

Clothing, Comportment, And Court Femininity In Domenico Ghirlandaio's Portraits Of Elite Florentine Women (C. 1475-1490), Emmerson Stephens

Art History Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a focused group of Domenico Ghirlandaio’s portraits of women from the Medici–Tornabuoni–Sassetti circle in Florence (c. 1475–1490), arguing that these works construct, rather than simply represent, an ideal of courtly femininity. Situating portraiture within systems of social regulation, it demonstrates how comportment, dress, and visual conventions disciplined the female body. Clothing functioned as a material technology that structured posture, gesture, and movement, shaping how women appeared both socially and pictorially.

Through analysis of panel portraits and fresco cycles, particularly in the Tornabuoni Chapel, the study shows how controlled formats, gestures, and surfaces produced figures that embody modesty, …

Sticks And Blackstone: Regulatory Takings And The Definition Of Property, Maryann Herman Apr 2026

Sticks And Blackstone: Regulatory Takings And The Definition Of Property, Maryann Herman

West Virginia Law Review

When private property is subject to regulation, courts sometimes find that it effects a taking requiring just compensation under the U.S. Constitution. This Article explains that what is deemed a regulatory taking can depend on the definition of property the court applies. There are two predominant ways property is defined: either as a bundle of rights or as a person’s dominion over a thing. The bundle of rights, or bundle of sticks, definition conceives of property as a collection of various, discrete rights held by a property owner and others in relation to a thing. These rights can be disaggregated …

Community Lawyering In Coal Country: Empowering Those Who Power America, Gregory Robertson Apr 2026

Community Lawyering In Coal Country: Empowering Those Who Power America, Gregory Robertson

West Virginia Law Review

Despite the intense and prolonged efforts of thousands of activists in the 1960s and 1970s to obtain safer working conditions for coal miners, pneumoconiosis rates, disease that develops as a result of inhalation of particle material, is on the rise. The Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo has shaken the ground upon which administrative agencies’ ability to promulgate rules to protect miners rests. This Note profiles a handful of attorneys, archetypes of community lawyering, who advocated for Appalachian coal miners during the height of the Black Lung Movement and continue to do so today. Through conversations with …

Overlooking The Trees For The Forest: A Look Into California's Cap-And-Trade Policy Shortcomings, Zachary Rohrbaugh Apr 2026

Overlooking The Trees For The Forest: A Look Into California's Cap-And-Trade Policy Shortcomings, Zachary Rohrbaugh

West Virginia Law Review

Cap-and-trade programs have grown in political popularity over the past few decades, primarily as a means of addressing climate change and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. The idea behind these programs is that the government sets a certain cap for emissions that businesses or entities are not allowed to exceed. These businesses or entities receive permits allowing them to pollute up to this capped level. If the business or individual does not use all their allotted permits, they are able to sell their extra to others who might need extra because they exceeded their cap. Although these programs have increased in …

Individualized Cannabis Reparations, Scott Bloomberg Apr 2026

Individualized Cannabis Reparations, Scott Bloomberg

Faculty Publications

This Article makes an argument that should be obvious. The best way for governments to right the wrongs of cannabis prohibition is to give money to people with cannabis offenses. Nonetheless, this straightforward reform has been consistently overlooked, dismissed, or minimized by policymakers and scholars alike, eschewed in favor of other social equity programs that do not right those wrongs nearly as effectively. Governments have indeed invested hundreds of millions of cannabis tax dollars in social equity licensing programs and community reinvestment initiatives. These programs-while often worthwhile-do not benefit the vast majority of people with past cannabis offenses. Governments should …
