Shaping The Medical Educators Of Tomorrow: Developing Residents' Teaching And Educational Scholarship Skills, Devang Pastakia, Jen King, Alyssa Schlotman, Ryan Hanson, Kyle Langford, Lauren Starnes, Ryan Wolf, Tara Minor

Presentations

It is widely accepted that residents play an integral role in educating medical students.1 It is estimated that medical students receive approximately one-third of their clinical education from residents.2 It has been demonstrated that good education from residents positively impacts medical student clerkship satisfaction and influences career choices.2 Despite the fact that residents participate in educational responsibilities and many residents want to incorporate medical education into their future careers, residencies often do not have programs that provide a foundation for developing future medical educators.3 Dedicated programs may also serve as an avenue through which residents can explore medical education careers …

Baseline Emotional Valence Predicts Subsequent Executive Function Task Performance, Andrea Fajardo Aguilar, Alyssa Harris, Isidora Varas-Sanchez, Julia Ribeiro, Dylan Kuni Apr 2026

Baseline Emotional Valence Predicts Subsequent Executive Function Task Performance, Andrea Fajardo Aguilar, Alyssa Harris, Isidora Varas-Sanchez, Julia Ribeiro, Dylan Kuni

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Executive functioning (EF) supports goal-directed behavior and is influenced by affective state. While prior research has largely focused on the effects of emotional valence during task performance, less is known about the influence of pre-task self-reported valence on subsequent EF performance. Our ongoing study will examine whether self-reported ratings of emotional valence assessed prior to the start of a task will predict performance. Participants will report valence ratings during a resting baseline period before performing two EF tasks: the Vertical Stroop and the Go/No-Go. Performance will be assessed using reaction time and accuracy. Regression analyses will be conducted to …

Interventions For Reducing Barriers To Future Employment Success In First-Generation College Students., Kellie M. Burke

Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects

First-generation college students (FGCS) comprise a significant and diverse segment of the U.S. undergraduate population, yet they remain disproportionately vulnerable to barriers that impede both academic achievement and career advancement. These challenges, rooted in intersecting factors (e.g., race & gender), are amplified by institutional structures that inadequately address the realities faced by FGCS. Despite the proliferation of career development programs, internship participation, and subsequent employment, among FGCS remains notably low, revealing persistent gaps in support, access, and program efficacy.

This qualitative study evaluates the Rising Leaders Program, an agency-driven intervention designed to promote career readiness for FGCS at Kentucky universities …

Information-Content-Informed Kendall-Tau Correlation Methodology, Robert M. Flight, Praneeth S. Bhatt, Hunter N.B. Moseley

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Background: Almost all correlation measures currently available are unable to directly handle missing values. Typically, missing values are either ignored completely by removing them or are imputed and used in the calculation of the correlation coefficient. In either case, the correlation value will be impacted based on the perspective that the missing data represents no useful information. However, missing values occur in real datasets for a variety of reasons. In metabolomics datasets a major reason for missing values is that a specific measurable phenomenon falls below the detection limits of the analytical instrumentation (left-censored values). These missing data are not …

Age-related cellular changes negatively impact CD4+ T cell function. Our prior work showed that mitochondrial complex II (succinate dehydrogenase [SDH]) expression was upregulated in T cells from older (O) adults (60–80 years old). T cells from older adults also produced higher amounts of cytokines generally considered proinflammatory, such as Th17 cytokines IL-17A/F and IL-21, and the Th-17-supportive cytokine IL-6, compared to T cells from younger (Y) adults (25–40 years old). The objective of our study is to evaluate whether hyperactivation of SDH is required for the induction of proinflammatory cytokines and the mechanistic link between SDH and Th17 cytokine …

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption is a major contributor to multi-organ dysfunction, yet its systemic effects remain incompletely understood. To address this, we utilized a physiologically relevant long-term mouse model, administering 20% EtOH in drinking water for 60 weeks, to investigate the integrated consequences of chronic exposure. EtOH-consuming mice (0.4–0.5 mL/day) exhibited > 30% reductions in chow and fluid intake, resulting in a 12% decrease in total caloric intake compared to controls (p < 0.001). Body mass remained similar until Week 52, after which EtOH-treated mice had lower body mass due to reductions in both lean and fat mass (p ≤ 0.004). Functional assessments revealed impaired treadmill endurance (−17%) and grip strength (−11%) (p ≤ 0.037), while motor coordination remained unaffected (p = 0.203). Chronic EtOH exposure significantly altered gut microbiota composition, reducing Lactobacillus and enriching Faecalibaculum, Clostridium, and Bifidobacterium at the genus level. These changes were accompanied by marked depletion of short-chain fatty acids (p ≤ 0.05). Indirect markers of gut permeability (serum LPS & zonulin) and liver injury (serum ALT & AST, hepatic amyloid content) were elevated, alongside increased total cholesterol and > 62% upregulation of hepatic TNFα, IL-6 & serum amyloid A (p ≤ 0.046). EtOH also induced dyslipidemia and glucose intolerance (p ≤ 0.041), although transcriptomic changes in white adipose …

Growth With New And Old Technologies, Bernardo Ribeiro Apr 2026

Growth With New And Old Technologies, Bernardo Ribeiro

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper proposes a semi-endogenous growth theory that incorporates technology vintages and the endogenous evolution of multiple technological paradigms through innovation. It provides a characterization of both balanced growth equilibrium and transitional dynamics in an environment where new technologies continuously emerge. From a positive perspective, the model rationalizes two distinct empirical patterns. Using two centuries of US patent data, I first document that the age profile of patents has a pronounced hump shape: most contemporary patents build upon technologies that are between 50 and 100 years old. Second, this age profile has remained stable throughout the past century. From a …

Soft-Floor Auctions: Harnessing Regret To Improve Efficiency And Revenue, Dirk Bergemann, Kevin Breuer, Peter Crampton, Jack Hirsch, Yero S. Ndiaye, Axel Ockenfels

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A soft-floor auction asks bidders to accept an opening price to participate in a second-price auction. If no bidder accepts, lower bids are considered using first-price rules. Soft floors are common despite being irrelevant with standard assumptions. When bidders regret losing, soft-floor auctions are more efficient and profitable than standard optimal auctions. Revenue increases as bidders are inclined to accept the opening price to compete in a regret-free second-price auction. Efficiency improves because a soft floor allows for a lower hard reserve, reducing the frequency of no sale. Theory and experiment confirm these motivations from practice.

Early Childcare Attendance And Cognitive Skills In Adolescence, Ingvild Almas, Nina Drange, Costas Meghir, Henrik Daae Zachrisson Apr 2026

Early Childcare Attendance And Cognitive Skills In Adolescence, Ingvild Almas, Nina Drange, Costas Meghir, Henrik Daae Zachrisson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper examines the impact of early childcare on academic achievement for children in grade 5 and grade 9, based on a 2003 policy expansion that created quasi-random variation in slot availability for children aged 1–2. Starting childcare one year earlier increases math scores by 9.7% of a standard deviation (SD) in grade 9. Children whose mothers do not hold a high school diploma benefit by a significant 0.28% of a SD at grade 9, reducing the math achievement gap from children of higher-educated mothers by about one third. We also present evidence of strong improvements for children of immigrants.

Training Language Models For Bilateral Trade With Private Information, Dirk Bergemann, Soheil Ghili, Xinyang Hu, Chuanhao Li, Zhuoran Yang Apr 2026

Training Language Models For Bilateral Trade With Private Information, Dirk Bergemann, Soheil Ghili, Xinyang Hu, Chuanhao Li, Zhuoran Yang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Bilateral bargaining under incomplete information provides a controlled testbed for evaluating large language model (LLM) agent capabilities. Bilateral trade demands individual rationality, strategic surplus maximization, and cooperation to realize gains from trade. We develop a structured bargaining environment in which LLMs negotiate via tool calls within an event-driven simulator, separating binding offers from natural-language messages to enable automated evaluation. The environment serves two purposes: as a benchmark for frontier models and as a training environment for open-weight models via reinforcement learning. In benchmark experiments, a round-robin tournament among five frontier models (15,000 negotiations) reveals that effective strategies implement price discrimination …

The Original Meaning And Understanding Of The Investigative Power Of The Grand Jury In The Constitution Of Alaska, Savannah Shoffner, Richard W. Garnett Apr 2026

The Original Meaning And Understanding Of The Investigative Power Of The Grand Jury In The Constitution Of Alaska, Savannah Shoffner, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

The investigatory, or reporting, power of grand juries refers to the body’s ability to issue statements on wide-ranging matters of public policy, generally aimed at exposing “inefficiency, neglect, or criminal or quasi-criminal conduct” by government officials. Grand jurors may propose an investigation themselves or respond to a request from a citizen. The reports produced by these investigations need not be tied to a specific indictment to be released.

Text, history, and tradition reveal that the grand jury has been understood as an intermediary between the government and the people, empowered to make public statements on the people’s behalf and entrusted …

Embodied Horror: Women And Medical Authority In Video Games, Jocilynn Denise Colombo Apr 2026

Embodied Horror: Women And Medical Authority In Video Games, Jocilynn Denise Colombo

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

Through a critical analysis of interactive horror, this paper argues that video games can function as ethical diagnostic narratives that uniquely expose systemic failures surrounding women’s bodies and medical authority. Focusing on Silent Hill 3 (2003) and Alice: Madness Returns (2011), I examine how these games render harm legible through player participation. By requiring players to move characters through hostile environments and make decisions within systems that simultaneously grant and restrict control, these games foster identification and complicity by positioning players directly within the structures they critique.

While feminist horror scholarship—notably from Julia Kristeva and Barbara Creed—has explored societal anxieties …

Occupational Epidemiology Of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, Lily Guo, Robin Kikuchi, April W. Armstrong, Suephy C. Chen Apr 2026

Occupational Epidemiology Of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, Lily Guo, Robin Kikuchi, April W. Armstrong, Suephy C. Chen

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) classically presents in glabrous skin. Some studies suggest an association between mechanical stress and ALM development. People working jobs with long periods of standing/walking may be exposed to near-daily mechanical stress. To investigate the relationship between occupation type and ALM development, we performed a retrospective cohort study using Optum’s Clinformatics Database (2007—2023). We compared the risk of ALM in adults with occupational data (n = 9,270,935). Retired patients had the highest prevalence (0.081) and incidence per 1,000,000 person-years (0.514, 95% confidence interval = 0.487—0.542) of ALM. We performed multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for demographics and insurance, …

Generative Ai In Enterprises: Optimizing Applications With Large Language Models, Donghao Huang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation investigates how to deploy Large Language Models (LLMs) effectively in enterprise settings, where accuracy, reliability, cost, privacy, and operational constraints often matter more than benchmark performance alone. Drawing on seventeen peer-reviewed publications (eleven published and six accepted for publication), the work develops and validates optimization strategies across three connected themes: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic AI for workflow automation, and deployment guidelines for real-world enterprise environments.

First, we study RAG optimization through systematic evaluation of open and proprietary models, highlighting conditions under which efficient open-weight models can match or exceed proprietary alternatives. To address a pervasive failure mode in …

Compliance Supervision And Firm Performance: An Empirical Study On Digital Transformation Of The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry, Jun Ma

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The biopharmaceutical industry, characterized by stringent global regulatory oversight, faces a pivotal theoretical tension regarding the nexus between regulatory compliance and corporate performance. The traditional perspectives often frame compliance as an “operational burden”, while the emerging viewpoints posit it as a “strategic asset”. Grounded in an integrated framework of the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capability (DC), this study investigates the moderating role of digital transformation in the relationship between Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance and corporate performance.

Employing a mixed-method design, this paper conducted two complementary studies. Study 1 adopted a grounded theory based on interviews with nine industry …

Coach Us If You Can: Development And Validation Of A Team Coachability Measure, Mounica Reddy Apr 2026

Coach Us If You Can: Development And Validation Of A Team Coachability Measure, Mounica Reddy

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Coaching research has largely focused on the coach or manager, with less attention given to the coachability of those receiving feedback (Shannahan et al., 2013b). However, individuals who receive coaching (i.e., coachees) are active participants in the coaching process and can improve or undermine the effectiveness of these practices (Gregory & Levy, 2010; London & Smither, 2002). Although coachability has been examined at the individual level, it has not been directly examined in team settings despite the centrality of teams to modern work (Bisbey & Salas, 2019; Mathieu et al., 2017). This dissertation developed and validated a new measure of …

Explainable Artificial Intelligence In The Image Domain And Its Applications To The Medical Field, Mirtha Lucas Apr 2026

Explainable Artificial Intelligence In The Image Domain And Its Applications To The Medical Field, Mirtha Lucas

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

This dissertation investigates the development of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods for deep learning models in the image domain, with a particular focus on medical imaging applications. Although neural networks achieve high predictive performance, their lack of interpretability limits their adoption in critical domains such as healthcare, where transparency and trust are essential. This work addresses this challenge by proposing novel approaches that improve the interpretability and reliability of model predictions.   A primary contribution is the introduction of Riemann–Stieltjes Integrated Grad-CAM (RSI Grad-CAM), a gradient-based attribution method that generates more relevant and spatially localized saliency maps. The method is evaluated …

Additively manufactured (AM) metals offer the potential for customizable, cost-effective components, but qualification and certification are crucial. Key to this process is understanding pore dynamics under stress, typically analyzed using micro-computed tomography. This study introduces laboratory-scale “betatron” x-rays from laser wakefield acceleration as a high-throughput alternative for x-ray tomography of advanced materials, such as AM AlSi10Mg alloys. Coupled with 3D finite element modeling, this method provides detailed insights into stress-porosity interactions. The approach delivers high-resolution scans, revealing that pore shape and local triaxiality significantly influence fracture dynamics, supporting advanced material characterization. This work also demonstrates the potential and versatility of …

Workplace Identity Disclosure: A Systematic Review And Psychometric Meta-Analysis Of Measurement And Correlates, Daniel Ryan Charles

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Workplace identity disclosure (WID) is a central process through which employees manage concealable stigmatized identities at work, yet the empirical literature is fragmented by inconsistent construct labels, varied measures, and uneven coverage across identity domains. This dissertation conducted a systematic review and psychometric meta-analysis of quantitative studies examining WID and related constructs. WID was defined as an umbrella construct encompassing disclosure-related behaviors through which employees make a concealable stigmatized identity known, more visible, or less hidden at work. The final review included 37 reports and 38 independent samples. Corrected bivariate associations were estimated for construct pairs represented by at least …

Optimizing Virtual Scrolling Performance In Angular: A Comparative Study Of Cdk And Custom Implementation, Guri Sokoli Apr 2026

Optimizing Virtual Scrolling Performance In Angular: A Comparative Study Of Cdk And Custom Implementation, Guri Sokoli

Theses

Modern web applications often display large datasets with tens of thousands of items, such as e-commerce catalogs, data tables, and social media feeds. Rendering all items in the Document Object Model (DOM) at once causes browser freezing, high memory use, and slow interfaces. Virtual scrolling solves this problem. It is widely adopted but rarely studied through direct performance comparison. Few empirical studies measure how different implementations behave under varying dataset sizes, devices, or browsers. This research conducts a comparative analysis of Angular CDK Virtual Scroll as an industry-standard baseline and develops an optimized implementation incorporating framework-specific enhancements: OnPush change detection …
