Flos Gari: Experiments With The Flower Of The Ancient Romans In A Modern Kitchen, Austin M. Pritchett Apr 2026

Flos Gari: Experiments With The Flower Of The Ancient Romans In A Modern Kitchen, Austin M. Pritchett

SPARK Symposium Presentations

This paper examines a condiment popular among the ancient Romans which might seem off-putting to modern people: the fermented fish sauce garum. A brief history of the garum as well as an analysis of its chemical composition are given, before the author describes his experiments with the sauce in his own kitchen, conducted in an attempt to determine its suitability for the modern palate.

A Rubric-Based Evaluation Of Mote Marine Aquarium’S Curriculum, Alexis Williams Apr 2026

A Rubric-Based Evaluation Of Mote Marine Aquarium’S Curriculum, Alexis Williams

Theses & ETDs

Informal science institutions such as aquariums play a critical role in shaping students’ engagement with and understanding of scientific concepts, particularly outside traditional classroom settings. This study addresses a gap in existing research by examining curriculum design rather than solely student outcomes, focusing on middle school programs at Mote Marine Aquarium. A theory-aligned rubric grounded in the Four-Phased Model of Interest Development, intrinsic motivation, three-dimensional learning, and the Contextual Model of Learning was developed and applied to evaluate three lessons: Marine Ecology, Ocean Technology, and Marine Biomedical. The analysis assessed inquiry-based learning, real-world connections, reflection, collaboration, and support for interest …

Interior Optimal Imprisonment Under Diminishing Marginal Disutility, Tim Friehe, Murat C. Mungan Apr 2026

Interior Optimal Imprisonment Under Diminishing Marginal Disutility, Tim Friehe, Murat C. Mungan

Faculty Scholarship

This note revisits the important question of how fines and imprisonment should be optimally employed. In D’Antoni et al. (2022), a monotone hazard rate condition implies a corner solution for imprisonment in the observable-wealth benchmark when imprisonment disutility is linear. We show that this result is not robust to offenders facing diminishing marginal disutility of imprisonment. The optimal prison term is interior as long as the marginal disutility associated with large imprisonment terms are low and the harms from the offense are large enough to warrant imprisonment. The sentence length thus becomes a genuine policy margin rather than a boundary …

Be Responsible In Your Answers! Monitoring Out-Of-Domain Behaviors In Domain-Specific Llms, Boquan Li, Chenzhe Lou, Zhe Ren, Peixin Zhang, Zirui Fu, Jun Sun, Yaowen Zheng Apr 2026

Be Responsible In Your Answers! Monitoring Out-Of-Domain Behaviors In Domain-Specific Llms, Boquan Li, Chenzhe Lou, Zhe Ren, Peixin Zhang, Zirui Fu, Jun Sun, Yaowen Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) have accelerated the rapid development of chatbot web applications in various domains, such as coding, biomedicine and psychology. Compared to general LLMs like ChatGPT, domain-specific LLMs require a greater sense of responsibility. For instance, if a programming LLM casually answers medical or psychological questions, it not only misleads the public but also poses legal risks. This highlights new demands for monitoring and preventing such irresponsible behaviors. Existing efforts attempt to monitor LLMs from multiple aspects, such as lying, jailbreaks, and toxic content, while overlooking out-of-domain behaviors. In this work, we propose an innovative LLM domain monitoring …

Altimetry Data From Icesat-2 Brings Value To The Private Sector, Molly E. Brown, Aimee Neeley, Abigail Phillips, Denis Felikson

Student Publications [Scholarly]

This short communication synthesizes evidence on how the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) altimetry data are used by private sector actors and the implications for economic value creation. Using secondary research that collected and summarized information from existing data from reports, journals, websites, and databases, the work identifies 54 companies across 9 sectors leveraging ICESat-2-derived elevation, canopy height, bathymetry, and surface measurements to inform decision-making, risk assessment, and new business models. The analysis situates ICESat-2 within a broader context where freely available Earth observation data can generate substantial private- and public-sector value, potentially exceeding hundreds of billions in …

How Ip Ends, Dave Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski Apr 2026

How Ip Ends, Dave Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski

Articles

Real and personal property may last forever, but intellectual property (IP) ends. Despite the doctrinal complexity and practical significance of the mechanisms that terminate IP rights, scholarship has scarcely focused on them, and none has analyzed these doctrines as a unified field. As a result, the discourse about the ways IP ends remains impoverished, with courts, legislatures, and commentators offering imprecise and inconsistent formulations that obscure the rationales for these doctrines. This Article offers the first comprehensive taxonomy of IP’s terminal mechanisms, providing much-needed conceptual and definitional coherence. It then reveals the underappreciated policy leverage these mechanisms can deliver and …

If Life Were Only As Our First Encounter, Yixiao Zhang Apr 2026

If Life Were Only As Our First Encounter, Yixiao Zhang

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis examines how contemporary portrait painting extends beyond the representation of physical appearance toward the construction of collective memory, history, cultural identity, and mechanisms of seeing. Using staged, photo-based portraits as a point of departure, my work engages both Eastern and Western traditions to produce new autoethnographic narratives. Rethinking the significance of portraiture today, this paper considers what persists and what has shifted over time. It argues that portrait painting is no longer merely a representation of an individual; rather, like a literary text, it functions as a signifier shaped by both the moment of its production and the …

(Un)Imagining India: Anti-Rape Protests As Diagnostic Of Indian State Power, Sonal Churiwal Apr 2026

(Un)Imagining India: Anti-Rape Protests As Diagnostic Of Indian State Power, Sonal Churiwal

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Senior Honors Papers

Since the 2012 brutal gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh brought India’s pervasive rape culture to international attention, media, politicians, and the broader Indian public demanded justice for “India’s daughter.” Protestors called on the Indian government to expand the police state, execute perpetrators, and create fast-track legal courts to avenge her death. Collectively, they cast the state in the role of a protector, even of a patriarchal authority. The nature of these demands stands in contrast to Kashmir and Manipur, geographies differentially controlled by the Indian state, where protests call for the withdrawal of the Indian army, a primary …

Choice, Power, & Care: Crisis Pregnancy Centers And Reproductive Justice In Missouri, Sylvie Richards Apr 2026

Choice, Power, & Care: Crisis Pregnancy Centers And Reproductive Justice In Missouri, Sylvie Richards

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Senior Honors Papers

Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) are religious organizations with the purpose to dissuade people from obtaining abortions. They often present themselves as authentic reproductive healthcare clinics through medicalized language, services such as ultrasounds and pregnancy tests, promises of information on all pregnancy options, staff dressed as medical professionals, and placement near family planning clinics. In reality, CPCs are medically unlicensed and often spread medical misinformation.

No study has yet focused on CPCs in Missouri, despite providing a critical case study. The state has minimal access to abortion and other components of comprehensive reproductive healthcare and one of the worst maternal mortality …

Solidarity, Strength, And Lessons Learned: The Repeal Of Right To Work In Michigan And Its Immediate Effects On Unions, Ella Compau Apr 2026

Solidarity, Strength, And Lessons Learned: The Repeal Of Right To Work In Michigan And Its Immediate Effects On Unions, Ella Compau

Honors Projects

This is a research paper on the immediate qualitative effects of the repeal of Right to Work laws in Michigan. It uses the UFCW Local 951 as a case study, analyzing the findings from interviews with union representatives and stewards. The literature review explains the history and effects of unions and Right to Work laws. The transition to a post-repeal workplace was reported as smoother than expected, and has resulted in the union now having much more time to build relationships with members and management, solve issues more efficiently, and invest in core values. Solidarity among workers is higher due …

Dietary Influence And Neurodegenerative Disease Risk: Insight From Alzheimer’S And Parkinson’S Disease, Madison Wirt Apr 2026

Dietary Influence And Neurodegenerative Disease Risk: Insight From Alzheimer’S And Parkinson’S Disease, Madison Wirt

Honors Projects

As populations age, neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) become significantly more prevalent and impactful on patients and families. Clinical research has suggested a correlation between diet, gut health, neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction to the onset and development of specific and severe NDDs, especially Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). This research focuses on the relationship behind the gut-brain axis, micronutrient status and how diet influences the development of both AD and PD. Ten randomized, controlled trials were analyzed from the literature to investigate the impact of these factors on the inflammatory, metabolic and antioxidant processes. The studies focused on the use …

Transition To Parenthood, Angel D. Kietzer Apr 2026

Transition To Parenthood, Angel D. Kietzer

Honors Projects

The transition to parenthood is an exciting and life changing moment for any family, especially first-time parents. This moment may be full of excitement, joy, and overwhelming emotions but may also include significant challenges. Parents may struggle with emotions as they learn how to adapt to this shift in family roles, and can be overwhelmed with the amount of new information they need to know in order to take care of their newborn. This paper will examine how the transition to parenthood is physically and emotionally challenging, as well as the educational needs regarding newborn growth and development, infant safety, …

Secondary Dual Language And Immersion Content Teachers And Their Instructional Materials, Curtis Larsen Apr 2026

Secondary Dual Language And Immersion Content Teachers And Their Instructional Materials, Curtis Larsen

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Secondary dual language and immersion (DLI) teachers who teach content courses, such as social studies or science, balance two central responsibilities: meeting content-area standards and supporting students’ language development (Cammarata & Tedick, 2012). Managing these responsibilities presents challenges when preparing and using instructional materials in languages other than English (Moate, 2014; Morton, 2013; Skinnari, 2020; Sun, 2017). While existing research shows that DLI teachers expend enormous energy seeking and preparing instructional materials for their content-area classes (Mathieu, 2022), little is known about the factors that guide this work or how well existing materials meet teachers’ needs. This dissertation sought to …

What Works In Martial Education: How The Experience Of Martial Educators Defines Living Muay Thai’S Place In An Evolving Martial Community, Justin Markus Apr 2026

What Works In Martial Education: How The Experience Of Martial Educators Defines Living Muay Thai’S Place In An Evolving Martial Community, Justin Markus

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Martial education, particularly Muay Thai, rarely offers formal educator training, and what does exists is rarely backed by research. Educators frequently develop in isolation, within communities lacking evidence-based frameworks. Some practitioners may find their way to pedagogical knowledge, but most do not. Living Muay Thai (LMT) was founded in 2020 to address these gaps. This qualitative phenomenological study evaluated LMT’s impact on martial educators after its first five years (April 2020-July 2025) and identified 11 areas for future development. Seven Muay Thai educators participated in semi-structured interviews and a focus group. An emergent phenomenological analysis generated findings; a reflexive thematic …

Bilingual Achievement, Identity, And Aspiration: Multilingual High School Students’ Lived Experiences Through The Bilingual Seal, Kristy O'Brien

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

O’Brien, K. (2026). Bilingual Achievement, Identity, and Aspiration: Multilingual High School Students’ Lived Experiences through the Bilingual Seal

In an educational landscape shaped by deficit-based perspectives on multilingual learners, asset-based policies such as the Minnesota Bilingual Seal offer an alternative approach for affirming students’ linguistic and cultural identities. This study examined this policy through the experiences of Latiné multilingual high school students. It amplified the voices of the students themselves through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, addressing a gap in multilingual learning and Bilingual Seal research, framed by the conceptual lens of critical consciousness and Latino Crit theory. The research questions are: …

The Effect Of Vibrotactile Sensory Input Devices On Improving Subjective Speech Perception For Those With Normal Hearing, Elizabeth Kalinowsky

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how vibrotactile sensory augmentation can improve speech understanding in adverse listening conditions for those with normal hearing by providing auditory speech cues. It aimed to investigate whether there is any value of AVT devices for those with normal hearing in adverse hearing situations, where understanding speech is difficult due to background noise, reverberation, or other factors. This research project is a preliminary case study involving one participant. Tympanometry and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) tests were conducted to verify that the participant did not appear to have hearing loss due to middle …

Architecture-Agnostic Test-Time Adaptation Via Backprop-Free Embedding Alignment, Xiao Ma, Young D. Kwon, Pan Zhou, Dong Ma Apr 2026

Architecture-Agnostic Test-Time Adaptation Via Backprop-Free Embedding Alignment, Xiao Ma, Young D. Kwon, Pan Zhou, Dong Ma

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

Test-Time Adaptation (TTA) adapts a deployed model during online inference to mitigate the impact of domain shift. While achieving strong accuracy, most existing methods rely on backpropagation, which is memory and computation intensive, making them unsuitable for resource-constrained devices. Recent attempts to reduce this overhead often suffer from high latency or are tied to specific architectures such as ViT-only or CNN-only. In this work, we revisit domain shift from an embedding perspective. Our analysis reveals that domain shift induces three distinct structural changes in the embedding space: translation (mean shift), scaling (variance shift), and rotation (covariance shift). Based on this …

Educational Interventions To Improve Interpersonal Communication With Icu Family Members, Adriana Szaboova Apr 2026

Educational Interventions To Improve Interpersonal Communication With Icu Family Members, Adriana Szaboova

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Family members of critically ill patients frequently experience significant psychological distress, often compounded by unclear communication and limited understanding of complex care processes in the intensive care unit (ICU). In the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), staff identified a gap in structured, procedure-specific education for families during the admission process following cardiac surgery.

Aims/Objectives: This quality improvement project aimed to develop and implement a one-page, procedure-specific family education tool for CVICU admissions. The goals were to integrate the materials into the admission workflow with staff education and to enhance HCAHPS communication scores during implementation.

Methods: This quality improvement project …
