The Artificial Maintenance Of Relationship Satisfaction: Romantic Ai Companion Usage Sustains Emerging Adults' Human Romantic Relationship Satisfaction While Eroding Relationship Stability, Rebekah M. Hakala
Theses and Dissertations
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly sophisticated, romantic AI companions--AI systems designed to simulate romantic, emotional, or sexual relationships--have emerged as a novel relational phenomenon. Nearly one in four emerging adults now engage with romantic AI companions, yet little is known about how this usage affects their romantic human relationships. Drawing on Social Exchange Theory and the Investment Model of Commitment, and employing structural equation modeling, this thesis uses data from 2,431 emerging adults in romantic relationships to examine whether romantic AI companion usage influences relationship satisfaction and relationship stability among emerging adults in the United States (ages 18-30), and whether …

Florida Police Officers’ Reflections On Faith And Spirituality Through Lived Experiences, Steven Vose Mcgillicuddy
Florida Police Officers’ Reflections On Faith And Spirituality Through Lived Experiences, Steven Vose Mcgillicuddy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study examined how Florida police officers perceived changes in their spiritual and religious beliefs following prolonged exposure to critical incidents. The research question asked how officers interpreted, adapted, and transformed their spiritual or religious beliefs in response to repeated critical incident exposure. Nine sworn frontline officers participated and were interviewed using a semi structured protocol. Transcripts were analyzed inductively using thematic analysis. Three primary findings emerged: (1) Career and Impact captured cumulative occupational exposure that prompted moral appraisal and coping, and participants did not report uniform loss of faith; (2) Spiritual Belief followed three common trajectories—stability, strengthening/reaffirmation, …

Exploring The Role Of Family Engagement In Youth Behavioral Health Programs, Jordon R. Washington-Trahan
Exploring The Role Of Family Engagement In Youth Behavioral Health Programs, Jordon R. Washington-Trahan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The behavioral health leaders at Organization X do not have a clear and practical way to engage family members in youth behavioral health programs. When caregivers are not actively involved in youth behavioral health treatment, youth may disengage from missed appointments and discontinue treatment prematurely. The present case study focused on Organization X, a small behavioral health organization located in the Southeastern United States. The Baldrige Framework of Excellence was the conceptual framework for this study, with a focus on consumer engagement and workforce operations. Semi structured and structured interviews were conducted with three behavioral health leaders. Data were collected …
Journey Of Becoming: Risk And Self-Determination In The Story Of Self For Adults With Intellectual, Developmental, And Learning Disabilities A Phenomenological Case Study Employing Narrative Inquiry And Thematic Analysis, Christopher R. J. Worth
Journey Of Becoming: Risk And Self-Determination In The Story Of Self For Adults With Intellectual, Developmental, And Learning Disabilities A Phenomenological Case Study Employing Narrative Inquiry And Thematic Analysis, Christopher R. J. Worth
Dissertations
This phenomenological case study, employing narrative inquiry and thematic analysis, captured the first-person voice of emerging adults (ages 20–28) with intellectual, developmental, and learning disabilities to explore how experiences of risk and self-determination shaped their personal narratives, or story of self. Guided by Critical Disability Theory, Foucault’s concept of relational power, and Shogren’s Causal Agency Theory, the study challenged the systemic bubble-wrapping that denies this population the "dignity of risk" (Perske, 1972). Data were collected from six participants through semi-structured interviews, adapted photovoice submissions, and participant selfreflections. The findings revealed that the phenomenon of becoming, catalyzed by intellectual adaptive risk-taking, …
Histopathology Image Classification Using Machine Learning, Mohammed H. Alali
Histopathology Image Classification Using Machine Learning, Mohammed H. Alali
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Histopathology image classification is a critical component of cancer diagnosis. However, the gigapixel scale of Whole-Slide Images (WSIs) and the high variability in tissue staining and scanner quality across medical centers present significant computational challenges. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive machine learning framework to address these challenges, bridging the gap between theoretical models and practical clinical deployment.
First, to manage the massive dimensionality and noise inherent in WSIs, this research develops a robust feature extraction methodology. The pipeline implements a stringent tile filtering technique to eliminate physical artifacts and resolve severe class imbalances. It integrates ConvNeXt alongside an attention-based pooling …
Cohomological Support Varieties Along Ring Maps, Ryan Watson
Cohomological Support Varieties Along Ring Maps, Ryan Watson
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Inspired by Quillen’s geometric approach to study group cohomology, Avramov introduced the theory of support varieties to study finite modules over local complete intersection rings. Geometric properties of the variety encode important homological information, and this theory has been a useful tool in studying complete intersection rings leading to many advances in local commutative algebra. By the work of several authors, this theory has now been expanded to encompass any noetherian local ring. Notably, Pollitz developed the theory of cohomological support varieties over Koszul complexes and used them to answer a question of Dwyer, Greenlees, and Iyengar regarding the structure …
Three Papers On The Impacts Of Electoral Rules On The Behavior Of Politicians, Jordon Tyler Newton
Three Papers On The Impacts Of Electoral Rules On The Behavior Of Politicians, Jordon Tyler Newton
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of three papers that examine the ways that electoral rules may provide elites incentives that cut against citizen interests. In the first, titled ``Maybe Later: Term Limits and Strategy Behind Candidate Entry," I use the context of term limits to reexamine conditions for candidate entry. I argue they reduce the number of candidates who challenge incumbents, leading to a lock-in effect. By increasing the frequency of open races, term limits incentivize potential challengers to wait for an open race. To demonstrate this, I analyze primary data from 85 legislative chambers in 44 states over a two-decade …

In the present study, the electrochemical behavior and quantitative determination of the Schiff base 3-[(anthracen-2-yl)imino]-5-nitro-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (ANT) were investigated for the first time using voltammetric techniques at a glassy carbon electrode. The effects of solvent composition, pH, and scan rate on the redox behavior of ANT were systematically evaluated. The compound exhibited an irreversible oxidation process governed by adsorption-controlled kinetics. Quantitative analysis was conducted using differential pulse stripping voltammetry (AdS-DPV) and square-wave stripping voltammetry (AdS-SWV) under optimized conditions. Both methods exhibited linear responses over the concentration range of 0.2–8.0 μM, with limits of detection of 0.0366 μM and 0.0433 μM for …
Influence Of Precursor Synthesis Temperature And Hydrothermal Alkaline Medium On Agglomeration And Crystal Phase Of Barium Titanate Nanoparticles, Murat Özen
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Phase‑pure, cube‑like barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal treatment of a single‑source barium-titanium peroxo-hydroxide precursor. Precursor solutions prepared at room temperature, 0 °C, and –10 °C with various storage times exhibited Ba/Ti molar ratios ranging from 0.66 to 1.05 as determined by X-ray fluorescence. Cooling the precursor solution to –10 °C effectively suppressed the polymerization of Ti-O-Ti, yielding near‑ideal stoichiometry and finer precursor particles. Subsequent hydrothermal processing in NH4OH, KOH, and NaOH (0.5–10 M, 100–200 °C) revealed the strong dependence of agglomeration and morphology on the alkaline medium. While NH4OH and KOH resulted in severe agglomeration and the …

Templating Effect Of Neutral Dithiane Ligands On The Self-Assembly Of Cationic Au(I)-Phosphine Units, Farzane Osanlou, Abdollah Neshat, Mohammad Reza Yousefshahi, Vaclav Eigner, Michal Dusek, Shahram Seidi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The interactions between the dinuclear Au(I) precursor (dppm)Au2Cl2 and neutral sulfur-containing dithianes (specifically 1,3- and 1,4-dithiane) were examined in the presence of NH₄PF₆. Although these sulfur-based ligands were initially employed to facilitate the formation of mixed phosphine/sulfur Au(I) complexes, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unexpected generation of multinuclear Au(I) assemblies exclusively coordinated by phosphine ligands. When 1,3-dithiane was present, a trinuclear Au(I) complex was isolated, characterized by a central four-coordinate Au(I) center exhibiting a distorted see-saw geometry, flanked by two terminal Au(I) centers with T-shaped coordination environments. Importantly, the dithiane ligand did not coordinate directly to the gold centers …

The Hate Circuit: A Collection Of Essays On Hate And Healing, Vivian Murphy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The Hate Circuit: A Collection of Essays on Hate and Healing is a lyric essay collection tracing the neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience of hatred and its slow unraveling. Rooted in the author’s relationship with her alcoholic mother, the essays move between memoir and scientific inquiry, examining how hatred forms in the brain, how it is inherited across generations, and what it costs to sustain it. Drawing on research in neuroscience, attachment theory, and the psychology of forgiveness, the collection argues that hatred is not simply an emotion but a circuit—one that can, with effort, be rewired. The essays ultimately …

ABSTRACT The trombone ensemble is an increasingly popular academic tool for young collegiate players to cultivate musicianship and ensemble skills. Because this setting exclusively uses trombones, it is excellent for training intonation, resonance, and overall blend. I was first introduced to performing in a trombone ensemble during my undergraduate studies at the University of North Alabama through a trombone quartet. The time I spent learning to listen and blend with my colleagues was foundational to developing the critical ensemble skills I still use frequently. Throughout my following studies at The University of Akron and the University of Memphis, respectively, the …

Tuberculosis (TB) is a deadly disease that claims the lives of over a million people each year worldwide. The Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine has long been used to protect against TB, but it produces variable effects across different populations and fails to protect against adult pulmonary TB. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative vaccines that can offer better protection. We have developed a strategy for the rational deletion of virulence-related genes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to create hyperattenuation that also enhances immunogenicity. Previously, we generated both single (∆fbpA) and double knockout (DKO) (∆fbpA-∆sapM) mutants of …

Morphology Extraction And Analysis Of Primary Soot Particles And Aggregates And Aggregates In Soot Tem Images Using Machine Learning, Timothy Paul Day
Morphology Extraction And Analysis Of Primary Soot Particles And Aggregates And Aggregates In Soot Tem Images Using Machine Learning, Timothy Paul Day
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Accurate characterization of soot morphology is crucial for understanding soot’s physical and chemical properties and their effects on climate and public health. Morphological characterization requires manual identification and segmentation of individual primary particles and aggregates, a labor-intensive and time-consuming process limits scale and reproducibility and contributes to uncertainty in climate models. Therefore, automated approaches are needed to reliably quantify soot morphology. This work develops SAGE (Soot Aggregate Geometry Extraction), an instance segmentation model and framework to segment primary particles in TEM images and extract morphological properties. Four key questions are addressed: (1) can the model achieve segmentation quality comparable to …
