Sense Of Agency And Control, Self-Esteem, And Psychological Distress Among Undergraduate Students In The U.S. And China, Wenqi Zhang, Peiyi Wang, Chuansheng Chen, Yufei Li, Baojuan Ye, Jianmin Shao
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Beliefs about oneself are closely related to one’s psychological distress, yet little is known about how different dimensions of self-perception interact to predict psychological distress and how these relationships vary across cultural contexts. This study examined cultural differences in the sense of agency and control, their associations with psychological distress, and the protective role of self-esteem among undergraduate students. The sample included 501 U.S. students and 336 Chinese students. Results revealed systematic cultural differences in agency and control: U.S. students reported higher levels of sense of positive agency and personal mastery, but lower levels of sense of negative agency and …

Research into psychedelic compounds is in resurgence because of the exciting potential for their use in the treatment of psychiatric and mental health disorders. Despite this revival, remarkably little is known about their evolution. One of the most intriguing psychedelic compounds is psilocybin, the compound found in ‘magic’ mushrooms and used in ritual ceremonies in North America for generations. Associated with agaricomycete fungi across eight distantly related genera, psilocybin acts in a similar way to the neurotransmitter serotonin, yet how and why natural selection favoured its biosynthesis remains unclear. Given the resemblance to serotonin, a highly conserved neurotransmitter across invertebrates …
Task-Relevant Haptic Feedback Improves Asymptotic Performance In De Novo Arm Control Acquisition, Ian Howard, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo
Task-Relevant Haptic Feedback Improves Asymptotic Performance In De Novo Arm Control Acquisition, Ian Howard, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The human motor system can learn to control novel effectors, but the contribution of task-relevant haptic dynamics to de novo learning remains unclear. Using a bimanual robotic interface, participants learned over two days to control the shoulder and elbow angles of a virtual arm in order to achieve accurate endpoint movements via constrained handle motions. On Day 1, one group practiced a purely kinematic mapping, whereas another group received continuous haptic feedback generated by an endpoint mass. With practice, movements shifted from sequential to more coordinated control and trajectories became straighter, with reduced directional deviation during target-directed endpoint movements, particularly …

The court granted the tenant's motion for summary judgment, dismissing the landlord's holdover petition. The court found that the lease lacked a conditional limitation, which is necessary to automatically terminate a tenancy upon breach, allowing only the landlord's election to terminate. Without such a limitation, the landlord's proper remedy before lease expiration was an ejectment action, not a summary holdover proceeding. Additionally, the predicate notice to cure and notice of termination were deemed impermissibly vague, as they merely restated lease provisions and made conclusory statements about breaches without sufficient detail or new allegations arising during the cure period, thus rendering …

Integrated Vaccine Bundle Procurement Framework, Ming Zhu
Integrated Vaccine Bundle Procurement Framework, Ming Zhu
Theses
Childhood vaccination is among the most effective public health interventions, yet ensuring affordable access in low-income countries (LICs) remains challenging. Centralized procurement agencies such as UNICEF and Gavi purchase vaccines antigen-by-antigen through competitive tenders which is a practice that fails to capture the affordability gains attainable by coordinating vaccine products into optimized bundles tailored to each child’s complete immunization schedule. This study develops an Integrated Vaccine Bundle Procurement Framework that shifts the unit of procurement from the antigen level to the vaccine product level. The framework formulates the procurement as the construction and selection of child-level immunization bundles, feasible sets …

Bioaerosols released during wildland and prescribed fires may influence ecosystems, air quality, and microbial dispersal, yet their transport and deposition remain poorly understood. This study combined infrared uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) observations of a prescribed burn with the coupled fire–atmosphere model WRF-SFIRE and a Lagrangian particle model in order to evaluate how uncertainties in simulated fire behavior affect predicted bioaerosol (bacterial cell) transport and deposition. A reconstruction of the observed spatiotemporal evolution of the fire was derived from thermal UAS measurements acquired during the burn and incorporated into a WRF-SFIRE simulation, in which the modeled fire spread was constrained to …
Think Small, Act Big: How Action Identification Shapes Responses To Scientific Messages, Laura Gust
Think Small, Act Big: How Action Identification Shapes Responses To Scientific Messages, Laura Gust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Effective scientific communication is critical in today’s media environment, dominated by misinformation, sensational headlines, and targeted advertisements. Research shows that simply presenting scientific information is not enough to change opinions or reduce misinformation; instead, messages must be tailored to specific audiences. This is especially important for climate change, where people often hold resistant attitudes and are overwhelmed by information. However, no studies have applied Action Identification Theory to changing opinions or the intention–behavior gap in climate change. The current study examines how alignment or misalignment of message type and enduring personal agency affects participants’ climate-friendly beliefs and behaviors. Some support …

Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Artificial intelligence chatbots increasingly provide legal information to consumers, but AI "hallucinations" (confidently stated but incorrect responses) pose serious risks in immigration law. Incorrect information about USCIS forms, fees, processing times, or filing procedures can result in visa denials, deportation proceedings, or permanent bars to entry.
This research presents a novel "source-grounded AI" system that eliminates hallucinations in immigration legal information. Rather than relying solely on large language models (LLMs) trained on general internet data, the system uses USCIS.gov as the primary source of truth for all operational data including current forms, fees, processing times, filing addresses, and policy updates. …

Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Effective teamwork and communication are critical during medical emergencies, particularly in oncology, yet health care professionals are often trained separately, creating challenges for interprofessional collaboration. Evidence-based frameworks like Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) offer structured tools to optimize team performance. This study describes a simulation-based program, the Clinical Medical Emergency Team Training Simulation (CMETTS), designed to instill foundational teamwork skills in early-stage learners. First-year medical students and newly graduated nursing residents participated in an interprofessional simulation involving medical emergency scenarios followed by structured debriefing sessions guided by TeamSTEPPS principles. We evaluated the program’s effectiveness …

Centralizing Communication Intake To Improve Workflow Visibility And Engagement: A Quality Improvement Project In A Cancer Center's Education Division, Menatalla El-Sharkawi, Mohamed Ait Aiss
Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Background: In large or complex organizations, multiple teams may be charged with managing different components of a project, initiative, or administrative assignment. When these teams have overlapping needs for information, the absence of a structured intake and tracking process can limit transparency, reduce efficiency, and hinder coordination across communication channels.
Methods: Drawing on principles of strategic communications and project management, we created a structured and centralized information sharing process for teams within the education division of a comprehensive cancer center. The intervention included workflow redesign, development of a standardized intake system, and use of real-time dashboard analytics to support operation …
Objections To The Use Of The Axiom Of Choice To Model The Physical World, Kensey Doughtie
Objections To The Use Of The Axiom Of Choice To Model The Physical World, Kensey Doughtie
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We look at platonistic mathematics and the application of this perspective in the physical world. We recognize paradoxes within Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of choice (ZFC) that conflict with physical reality, giving us reason to question if the axiom of choice should be so freely applied in theories of the physical world especially since it appears to enable a deterministic perspective. In theories of quantum physics, the axiom of choice is used to assume noncomputable numbers as initial conditions. This is equivalent to assuming a finite system contains an infinite amount of information at an instant in time; …
Lessons From The Least: Healing-Centered Discipline Reform For Neurodivergent Youth In U.S. Public Schools, Deborah Brooks
Lessons From The Least: Healing-Centered Discipline Reform For Neurodivergent Youth In U.S. Public Schools, Deborah Brooks
Liberty University Research Week
Disproportionate disciplinary outcomes for neurodivergent students—particularly those with autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities—represent a systemic failure of American education policy. Although students with disabilities constitute 17% of the K–12 population, they account for 29% of out-of-school suspensions and 21% of expulsions, disparities compounded by race, gender, and socioeconomic disadvantage. These patterns feed directly into the school-to-prison pipeline, a documented trajectory linking exclusionary discipline to elevated risk of juvenile justice involvement. Existing legal protections under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as trauma-informed care frameworks, …

Authenticated Hericium Erinaceus Mushroom And Selected Mycelia Reference Materials For General Industry Use, Steven Dentali
Oxford ICSB
The establishment of authenticated reference materials is critical for method validation, standards development, and adulteration detection in the medicinal mushroom market. Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s Mane) is widely commercialized, yet historically has lacked species-specific analytical standards. This presentation describes the species identification protocol used by Nammex to develop and maintain authenticated H. erinaceus mushroom reference materials that support ongoing standards work, including advisory contributions to AOAC INTERNATIONAL initiatives. Production partner voucher specimens are authenticated using macroscopic, organoleptic, and morphological examination by qualified personnel, and retained as internal reference materials. Genetic verification using DNA sequencing confirms H. erinaceus identity in voucher specimens …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a fairly new and prevalent part of collegiate athletics, especially in how teams examine and scout athletes. Scouting is the process of watching and evaluating athletes’ performance with the intent of recruitment. The purpose of this study is to explore how division 1 collegiate recruiting teams can use AI as a tool to guide them in their process of scouting. Traditionally, scouting involves a lot of travel, film watching, and stress on team scouts, which can bring about problems such as emotional and opinionated decisions, whereas AI could bring a more statistical, less stressful scouting process. …
