Adventitial Macrophage Accumulation Impairs Perivascular Nerve Function In Mesenteric Arteries With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Elizabeth A. Grunz, Benjamin W. Jones, Olubodun Michael Lateef, Sidharth Sen, Katie Wilkinson, Trupti Joshi, Erika M. Boerman

Biomedical Sciences

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease involves aberrant immune responses and is associated with both cardiovascular disease risk and altered intestinal blood flow. However, little is known about how inflammatory bowel disease affects regulation of perivascular nerves that mediate blood flow. Previous work found perivascular nerve function is impaired in mesenteric arteries with Inflammatory bowel disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism of impaired perivascular nerve function.

Methods: RNA sequencing was performed on mesenteric arteries from IL10−/− mice treated with H. hepaticus to induce disease (inflammatory bowel disease) or left non-gavaged (Control). For all other studies, Control and …

Experimental Data-Driven System Identification Of Scale-Model Airboat Dynamics For Control And Autonomy Applications, Miguel A. Trejos May 2026

Experimental Data-Driven System Identification Of Scale-Model Airboat Dynamics For Control And Autonomy Applications, Miguel A. Trejos

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To achieve autonomous control of a surface watercraft requires an accurate model describing the dynamics of the system. To this end, the modeling of dynamics of an airboat with a combustion engine-based propulsion system is investigated. Specifically, a black-box data-based approach using neural networks. To facilitate this, a custom data collection system was developed to record linear and rotational motion during field tests. Due to the airboats unique ability to traverse different terrains, not just water, the modeling of dynamics on different terrains was investigated.

Optimization-Based Power Management For Hybrid Towing Vessels: A Comparative Framework Toward Mission-Aware Control, Rachel K. Burchill May 2026

Optimization-Based Power Management For Hybrid Towing Vessels: A Comparative Framework Toward Mission-Aware Control, Rachel K. Burchill

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an optimization-based framework for power management in hybrid towing vessels operating under dynamic mission conditions. A physically consistent modeling approach is developed, incorporating battery state-of-charge dynamics (SOC), unified power flow, and operational constraints. The framework evaluates rule-based control using fixed heuristic thresholds, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and multi-objective Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) under a representative harbor-assist mission profile. Results show that optimization-based methods significantly outperform rule-based control. PSO achieves the lowest fuel consumption and near-perfect tracking with minimal battery use, while GA provides balanced performance with moderate battery utilization. NSGA-II reveals a …

Advancement In Electrochemical Generation-Collection: Snapshot Redox Cycling Voltammetry For Rapid Analysis At Chip-Based, Individually Addressable Microband Electrode Arrays, Blake Aleck Sterling May 2026

Advancement In Electrochemical Generation-Collection: Snapshot Redox Cycling Voltammetry For Rapid Analysis At Chip-Based, Individually Addressable Microband Electrode Arrays, Blake Aleck Sterling

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Snapshot redox cycling voltammetry (Snapshot RCV) is introduced as a rapid electrochemical technique that reconstructs the current-potential profile of a redox active species using a microband electrode array. By simultaneously biasing individual generator electrodes alternating in the array to different voltages across the analyte’s potential range while individually holding collector electrodes at a reversing potential, “spatial” voltammetry is achieved in as little as 1 s with the temporal speed of chronoamperometry, rapidly capturing the steady-state redox cycling (RC) profiles. During RC (a mode of generation-collection), the analyte is oxidized (or reduced) at generator electrodes and converted back at neighboring collector …

Explainability In Deep Learning For Density Regression, Dalton James Oxford May 2026

Explainability In Deep Learning For Density Regression, Dalton James Oxford

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Classical statistical methods focus on explainability and inferential power. Machine learning and deep learning can handle non-linear, high-dimensional data better than traditional methods. In modeling, a clear understanding and interpretation are essential to decision-making. Recent work in quantile regression and extreme modeling has begun to use deep learning due to its performance on high-dimensional, non-linear data. Semi-Parametric Quantile Regression (SPQR) is a nonparametric spline-based approach to quantile regression that estimates the conditional PDF and CDF of the response. Semi-Parametric Quantile Regression for Extremes (SPQRx) is a recent extension of SPQR that provides two features: out-of-sample estimation and accurate extreme-tailed estimation. …

Strain Engineering Of Excitonic And Vibrational Properties In Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, Sneha Minesh Patel May 2026

Strain Engineering Of Excitonic And Vibrational Properties In Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, Sneha Minesh Patel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical strain represents a robust and non-invasive method for tuning the electronic and vibrational properties of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). This work examines homogeneous biaxial strain as a symmetry-preserving control parameter that governs excitonic and interlayer dynamics in atomically thin TMDs. In monolayer MoSe2, biaxial tensile strain is intrinsically generated during high-temperature physical vapor deposition due to thermal expansion mismatch with amorphous substrates. Optical spectroscopy demonstrates substantial and tunable excitonic energy shifts exceeding 100 meV per percent strain. Polarization-resolved second harmonic generation confirms the retention of lattice symmetry under biaxial deformation. The investigation is further extended to bilayer MoS2, where …

Orbital Rendezvous In Schwarzschild Spacetime, Joaquin Malarria May 2026

Orbital Rendezvous In Schwarzschild Spacetime, Joaquin Malarria

Theses & ETDs

This thesis develops a relativistic generalization of the classical Hohmann transfer between circular orbits in a central gravitational field. The problem is formulated in Schwarzschild spacetime, where spacecraft trajectories are modeled as timelike geodesics and orbital transfers as sequences of impulsive velocity changes. Using conserved quantities derived from Killing vectors, the equations of motion are reduced to an effective radial problem, allowing the construction of bound transfer orbits connecting two circular orbits. A parametric representation of the radial motion is used to evaluate the azimuthal advance and time of flight along the transfer trajectory, with numerical methods used where closed-form …

Bumblebee Fields In A Schwarzschild Background, Demetre Seturidze May 2026

Bumblebee Fields In A Schwarzschild Background, Demetre Seturidze

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, we investigate the behavior of a Lorentz-violating vector field near an uncharged static black hole. We analyze the equilibrium configuration of the field and its linear perturbations. We show that the equilibrium solution and spherically symmetric perturbations are governed by a quadratic function whose properties determine their qualitative behavior. By imposing realness and convergence, we derive bounds on the allowed parameters and identify a critical case in which the monopole perturbations grow large. We further derive asymptotic expressions for multipole perturbations near the event horizon and spatial infinity

Music & Emotion: Matching Neurobiological Proxies To Affect Components Induced By Music Modality, William Lopez May 2026

Music & Emotion: Matching Neurobiological Proxies To Affect Components Induced By Music Modality, William Lopez

Theses & ETDs

The United States struggles with high rates of mental health conditions and their misdiagnosis. Both major diagnostic manuals used in mental health rely solely on behavioral and self-reported measures for their diagnostic criteria. Differential diagnosis could be supported by implementing non-invasive neurophysiological and neuroendocrinological measures. Regarding the treatment aspect of healthcare, music therapists can be equipped with additional tools by understanding how individual manipulations of musical components directly influence emotion. Many music studies examine the general effects of music or conduct correlation analyses of songs that share musical components, rather than employing a controlled paradigm in which near-identical pieces are …

Flipping The Format: A Comparative Analysis Of Pedagogy’S Performance On Comprehension In Introductory Financial Accounting Education, Allison Drozd

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Education is an ever-evolving field, and accounting education is no different. Introductory financial accounting is a required business course at universities that is characterized by high failure rates (Kealey et al., 2005). Evidence suggests that active learning and constructivist approaches improve comprehension of introductory financial accounting concepts as measured by exam performance. All methods studied produced statistically significant positive results on comprehension learning outcomes. Many professors' experiences support the studies' sentiment that active learning is important for teaching course concepts. The evidence reviewed in this thesis supports positive learning outcomes for comprehension of accounting concepts through active learning and constructivist …

Within the past few years, Illinois has gone through a bail reform that has changed how a defendant’s pretrial custody status is determined. This reform has negatively impacted victims, resulting in more safety risks, judicial interpretation, and a decrease in resources. These issues are emerging as practitioners work with victims constantly and information becomes more available to the public. This Article, based in part on interviews with attorneys and victims’ services advocates, proposes remedies that legislators and counties can adopt to help balance the rights of defendants and victims. Some of these remedies include modifying the legislation, adopting different procedures, …

Mischaracterizing Officer Self-Defense Doctrine In Use Of Force Cases Will Have Catastrophic Effects On Fourth Amendment Analysis, Caleb Sook Yoon May 2026

Mischaracterizing Officer Self-Defense Doctrine In Use Of Force Cases Will Have Catastrophic Effects On Fourth Amendment Analysis, Caleb Sook Yoon

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

As raised in Barnes v. Felix, the moment of threat doctrine was coined by the Fifth Circuit’s majority and concurring opinions written by Judge Higginbotham as being a test that only looks to the preceding moments that led to officers’ use of deadly force. This is a mischaracterization of the officer self-defense doctrine under the “totality of the circumstances” test established by Graham v. Connor when evaluating police use of force. Unfortunately, this mischaracterization has been reinforced by SCOTUS during oral arguments and through SCOTUS’s ruling. As the Supreme Court has remanded the case back to the district courts, this …

How Presentation Shapes Multisensory Category Learning, Hooman Main Amiri

Master's Theses and Capstones

Category learning allows people to group complex sensory input into categories, helping them generalize knowledge from familiar exemplars to novel stimuli. In everyday life, categories are often learned from more than one sense, yet most prior work on category learning has focused on learning in a single sensory modality. Here, we asked whether the way category information is presented across modalities, simultaneously or separately, shapes multisensory category learning in adults. In Experiment 1, participants learned the categories with either simultaneous or separate presentation of auditory and visual information and then completed a test phase to assess not only whether they …
