The Effect Of Cognitive Coordination Response Speed Exercises On Timed Counterattack Performance In Female Fencers, Fatimah Abed Malih, Rimah Mohammed Zuwair, Ardo Okilanda
Modern Sport
Fencing is characterized by rapid and sudden changes that require speed in decision-making and motor responses. In addition, it requires high sensorimotor awareness and strong coordination between leg, arm, and eye movements. In the current study, the researchers used cognitive coordination response speed exercises and physical and skill exercises in order to develop performance in the time counterattack. The aim of the study is to identify the effect of cognitive coordination response speed exercises on the performance of the time counterattack of female foil fencers. An experimental method was used on the female fencing team players at the College of …

Advancing Equitable Nurse Assignments Through Nursing Workload Score Categorization In An Adaptable Acuity Unit At An Academic Health Center, Moses Albaniel
Doctoral Projects
Inpatient nursing shift assignments often rely on clinical judgment, which can lead to inequitable workload distribution on mixed‑acuity units. This quality improvement project evaluated assignment equity using the coefficient of variation (CV) of nursing workload acuity scores and examined the relationship between workload balance and perceived assignment burden. A single‑group pretest–posttest design was implemented on a cardiac adaptable acuity unit at Stanford Health Care over a 12‑week period, encompassing 168 shifts from December 14, 2025, to March 7, 2026. The intervention, implemented with 11 charge nurses, combined structured charge nurse education with an optimized Epic Reporting Workbench tool incorporating dynamic …

Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov
Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov
Economics Honors Projects
Worker effort supply is influenced not only by rational expectations but also biases such as framing and numerical presentation of incentives. Identifying these effects is essential for designing effective incentives. To study left-digit manipulation, loss aversion, and loss aversion prediction, I conducted an experiment in an online labor market. Participants completed a real-effort typing task, a willingness- to-pay (WTP) task, and a self-reported loss aversion survey. Loss framing and left-digit manipulation had no statistically significant effects on effort, with no interaction effect, suggesting their influence on effort-supply may be overstated or highly heterogeneous. Despite null treatment effects, behaviorally elicited loss …

A challenge of studying mammalian cardiac embryogenesis is the limited ability to perform experimental manipulations in animal models. The avian embryo is widely accepted as a model for mammalian heart developmental studies. In this study, we establish the methodology and protocols for studying the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) heart at embryonic day 10 (HH38) using the FUJIFILM VisualSonics Vevo 3100 ultrasound system equipped with a MX550D small animal cardiology transducer. These protocols were designed to measure right ventricular wall thickness, pulmonary artery diameter, and the outflow velocities of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and the pulmonary artery …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Introduction: : Chronic tendinopathy affects approximately 30% of musculoskeletal consultations, yet treatment outcomes remain inconsistent despite numerous available interventions. This variability stems from the absence of validated frameworks to match individual patients to optimal treatments based on underlying pathophysiology. To synthesize current evidence on ultrasound imaging biomarkers, neuroimmune mechanisms, and interventional therapies in chronic tendinopathy, and propose a clinically applicable framework integrating ultrasound phenotyping with neuroimmune assessment to guide personalized treatment selection. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science through December 2025. Studies examining ultrasound/elastography imaging, neuroimmune mechanisms, or treatment interventions in chronic …
Art Criticism As Categorical Reasoning, Madeline Jester
Art Criticism As Categorical Reasoning, Madeline Jester
Research Symposium
In this paper, I offer an interpretation of Kendall Walton’s framework of art appreciation in Categories of Art. According to Walton, in order to appreciate an artwork, we must perceive it as belonging to some artistic ‘category’, because categorization determines which features of an object are aesthetically relevant. Different categorizations of the same object, then, can produce different artworks. I’ll argue for a bipartite analysis, where the intended categories of an art object can come apart from the categories through which the object is the most aesthetically valuable work, and that which way of categorizing is ‘correct’ depends on our …

Measuring Disability Prevalence In Healthcare: A Study Comparing Two Disability Measures, Kristen L. Milefchik, Rhonda K. Dailey, Sharon Milberger
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
People with disabilities experience significant health disparities and interventions are needed to address them. Measuring disability prevalence is an essential aspect of designing effective, data-driven healthcare strategies. Accurately measuring disability prevalence is challenging given disability is a complex phenomenon, with biological, social, environmental, and cultural components. Previous studies have compared a variety of disability status measurements and found that measurements were incongruent with each other. This study examines the concordance between disability status using two different measures: the nationally recognized American Community Survey (ACS-6) functional difficulty questions and one disability identity question. We used data from 3,621 adult patients participating …
Interference Colors To Thickness: Measuring Thin-Film Dynamics With A Camera And Arduino, Babel Barm, James Knott
Interference Colors To Thickness: Measuring Thin-Film Dynamics With A Camera And Arduino, Babel Barm, James Knott
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
In this project, we studied how the thickness of a soap film can be measured using the colors created by thin-film interference. When light shines on a soap film, some light reflects off the front surface and some off the back surface. These light waves combine and create colorful patterns that depend on the film’s thickness. By observing these patterns, we can learn how the thickness of the film changes over time.
We used two methods to collect data: a camera to capture the colors of the film and a phototransistor connected to an Arduino to measure the intensity of …
Construction Of A Geiger-Müller Counter, Katie Siobhan Bennett, Benjamin Allen Murdoch
Construction Of A Geiger-Müller Counter, Katie Siobhan Bennett, Benjamin Allen Murdoch
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Our investigation describes the construction of a Geiger-Müller Counter from an Arduino Uno kit. With the use of some resistors, a breadboard, DC powersource and a Geiger tube, and other miscellaneous supplies, we were able to not only physically build the circuitry for the Geiger-Müller Counter, but we were also able to program it to produce sounds, lights, and a display screen to show the count rate of the sources used. This investigation allowed for a comparison between our system and an industrial-grade counter, as well as demonstrated the simplicity of creating expensive equipment with accessible and affordable materials.
Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka
Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with inattentiveness and lower working memory capacity, which can impair academic performance. Gestures, movements of the hands that express information alongside speech, help maintain attention and support learning. We investigated whether adults learn Japanese vocabulary more effectively through speech alone or speech+gesture instruction. Baseline and visual attentiveness were measured to explore interactions between attention and gesture-based learning. Spontaneous gesture rates were also measured to consider the implications of gesture production in learning. This study helps understand and develop gesture-related tools that can be particularly beneficial to students struggling with attention.

Microarchitectural Vulnerabilities And Performance Tradeoffs In Shared Scientific Computing, Zyad Abd-Elrahman, Santosh Pandey
Microarchitectural Vulnerabilities And Performance Tradeoffs In Shared Scientific Computing, Zyad Abd-Elrahman, Santosh Pandey
Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)
Introduction & Problem Statement
Shared scientific computing platforms are built for speed and utilization, but they create a security problem that isolation alone can't fully solve. Even with TEEs, containers, or a privilege separation in place, the hardware underneath remains a shared resource. Speculative execution, cache contention, interconnect timing, and similar microarchitectural effects can leak information or create integrity risks across protection boundaries without any malicious code involved. For CI operators running graph workloads, HPC kernels, or ML pipelines in co-tenanted systems, the threat is inherent in normal execution. The real question isn't whether these vulnerabilities exist, but it's what …

An Evaluation Of Biologically-Inspired Slam Models Against Traditional Models, Colby Mullins, Asadbek Nematov, Ross Volenec, Chance Hamilton, Alfredo Weitzenfeld
Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)
This research presents a comparative analysis of biologically-inspired SLAM models (RatSLAM [2], SeqSLAM [3]) versus traditional feature-based geometric SLAM (ORB-SLAM3 [1]) to establish a standardized framework for evaluating accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency under varying environmental conditions. To ensure an equitable baseline, models are subjected to a unified testing pipeline across real-world datasets (Oxford RobotCar clear and overcast sequences) and controlled Webots simulations (day/night and seasonal centerlines) using timestamp-aligned 480p monocular PNG images. Within this pipeline, pose estimations are standardized to the TUM trajectory format, and spatial alignment and scale correction are applied via the evo evaluation library [4] to …

Beyond Folded Proteins: Assessing The Limits Of Ai Structure Prediction For Intrinsically Disordered Complexes, Juan Velasquez, Faith Robinson, Sebastien Ghent, Taseef Rahman
Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)
Introduction & Problem
Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and their associated “fuzzy” complexes represent a major unresolved challenge in structural biology. Unlike traditional protein complexes that adopt stable, well-defined tertiary structures, fuzzy complexes retain conformational heterogeneity even in the bound state [1]. This dynamic behavior is functionally important in processes such as transcriptional regulation, signaling, and phase separation, but it complicates both experimental characterization and computational prediction. Recent advances in deep learning-based protein structure prediction, particularly AlphaFold2 and its successors, have demonstrated near-experimental accuracy for ordered proteins [2]. However, these models are fundamentally trained on static structural data, primarily derived from …
