Abstract
This paper presents the conceptual and preliminary design of a sub-500g hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with an active gust load alleviation (GLA) system. The aircraft combines passive twist wingtip (PTWT) devices with an inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based adaptive feedforward control architecture to reduce peak wing-root bending moments by 30–40% relative to an unmitigated baseline configuration.
The propulsion system employs a twin tilt-rotor plus rear pusher arrangement within an 80g mass budget, enabling clean sensor inflow while supporting both hover and efficient cruise flight at 12–13 m/s. Electronic …
Training Vs. Reality: The Challenges Of Preventing Heat-Related Illness In Migrant Farmworkers, Sonya Homami
Training Vs. Reality: The Challenges Of Preventing Heat-Related Illness In Migrant Farmworkers, Sonya Homami
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Heat‑Related Illness (HRI) is a major occupational hazard for migrant farmworkers, who are 35 times more likely to die from HRI than workers in other industries. Although HRI training aims to improve prevention knowledge, its effect on actual HRI outcomes is unclear.
Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science identified studies evaluating HRI training and reporting HRI prevalence or related symptoms. Fifteen studies met inclusion criteria.
Results: HRI training did not reduce HRI prevalence or provide protective effects. Training increased reporting of workplace injuries and concern about HRI. Despite high training uptake—over …

Background: Levetiracetam is commonly used in epilepsy management but has been associated with irritability‑predominant aggressive behavioral adverse events, including irritability and aggression. Reported risks vary across trials, and the influence of comparator type and outcome definition remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the risk of irritability‑related aggressive behavioral adverse events associated with levetiracetam and to assess whether outcome definition or comparator subgroup modifies this risk. Methods: We searched ClinicalTrials.gov for interventional trials with posted results involving levetiracetam. Studies reporting irritability, aggression, agitation, or related irritability‑driven behaviors in comparisons with placebo or another antiseizure medication were included. Random‑effects Mantel–Haenszel meta‑analyses were …

An Elusive Diagnosis: Pheochromocytoma Presenting With Hyperglycemia And Hypertensive Crisis, Tucker Ledo
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Pheochromocytoma is a rare catecholamine-secreting tumor that can present with a wide range of nonspecific symptoms, often mimicking more common medical conditions and making early diagnosis difficult. We report the case of a 40-year-old female with a history of hypertension and prediabetes who presented to the emergency department with hyperglycemia following an episode of lightheadedness. This case highlights the diagnostic challenge of pheochromocytoma in the emergency department, where initial symptoms may be subtle and easily attributed to more common conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or menopause. Recognition of episodic sympathomimetic symptoms and unexplained hypertensive crises should prompt consideration of pheochromocytoma …

Refeeding Syndrome In A Person Experiencing Homelessness: A Case Report, James Espinosa, Jose Gerald Aragon, Md Fateha, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is a potentially life-threatening metabolic disturbance that occurs following nutritional reintroduction in severely malnourished individuals. It is characterized by rapid intracellular shifts of electrolytes—most notably hypophosphatemia—driven by insulin-mediated metabolic changes. Although commonly associated with eating disorders and chronic illness, RFS may also occur in socially vulnerable populations.
We report the case of a 64-year-old male experiencing homelessness who presented to the emergency department with weakness, muscle cramps, and confusion after resuming regular meals at a local shelter following prolonged minimal intake. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe hypophosphatemia (0.7 mg/dL), hypokalemia (3.0 mmol/L), and hypomagnesemia (1.2 mg/dL). Electrocardiogram demonstrated …

Abstract
Heart failure (HF) is one of the hallmark diseases that represent a decline of cardiovascular function. Heart failure is characterized by a decrease in the ability of the heart to pump blood throughout the body, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea, and swelling. HF is shown to decrease quality of life and increase mortality. Traditional treatments include pharmacology, lifestyle modifications, and surgery. Among the treatments, deliberate heat exposure in the form of dry saunas has been highlighted as a potential treatment option for HF. Dry saunas, especially infrared saunas, are shown to increase body temperature which improves circulation …

Towards More Effective And Efficient Ite And Board Preparation In Emergency Medicine: A Conceptual Framework Using Personality Preferences (Mbti) To Inform Study And Test-Taking Behaviors, James Espinosa, Robin Lahr, James Lee, Alan Lucerna
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Preparation for high-stakes examinations in Emergency Medicine (EM) relies heavily on question-bank practice, rapid decision-making, and targeted review. Despite standardized board-preparation resources, trainees demonstrate substantial variability in study behaviors and perceived efficiency. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), widely used in medical education for communication and self-reflection, may offer a framework for understanding differences in study and test-taking behaviors, though it is not designed as a predictive psychometric tool.
Objective: To review existing literature relating MBTI preferences to learning behaviors and academic performance, and to propose a conceptual framework linking personality preferences to board-style test-taking patterns in EM trainees.

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by the triplication of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21), resulting in skeletal insufficiency (low bone mineral density) and altered bone development. DS mouse models recapitulate these deficits, including sexual dimorphism in long bone alterations. Historically, Ts65Dn mice provided much of the insight behind DS-related skeletal deficits with ∼100 trisomic orthologous genes, but there are concerns about the genetic fidelity in this model due to the included triplication of genes not homologous to Hsa21. A new DS model, Ts66Yah, subtracted the non-Hsa21 homologous trisomic genes from Ts65Dn but has not been evaluated for long bone deficits. Comparing …

Lunar Manufacturing Systems And The Role Of Additive Recycling Technologies, Camille A. Newman
Honors Theses
Renewed international interest in sustained lunar exploration has created a growing demand for technologies to support long-duration space exploration. Part of the recent Artemis missions and the Moon to Mars initiative is to improve key mission capabilities and fill critical gaps necessary to sustain lunar habitation. Waste management, recycling systems, and manufacturing systems have been identified as critical technologies that need further development before a sustained mission is possible. This thesis explores the feasibility of an additive manufacturing and recycling system designed to process plastic waste generated during extended lunar habitation. Initial research focused on existing manufacturing and recycling technologies …
Effect Of Accelerated Adaptation Programs On Feedlot Performance And Health Of Steers Drenched With Megasphaera Elsdenii And Quantifying And Partitioning Multi-Year Carbon Dioxide And Methane Fluxes In A Grazed Temperate Pasture, Rebecca Mcdermott
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
With strong consumer demand for beef and increasing concern about the environmental impacts of beef production, improving production efficiency and advancing the understanding of the environmental footprint are critical for the long-term sustainability of beef production systems. The first experiment evaluated the effect of accelerated adaptation strategies, using energy intake and cattle behavior, on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and health of yearling steers drenched with exogenous Megasphaera elsdenii. Accelerated adaptation programs (0, 7, or 14 d transition to 100% finisher) were compared to a traditional 21-d adaptation. Dry matter intake responded quadratically across treatments, with the greatest intake observed in …
Engagement Modeling And Inference For Risk-Aware Path Planning Under Adversarial Uncertainty, Grant Stagg
Engagement Modeling And Inference For Risk-Aware Path Planning Under Adversarial Uncertainty, Grant Stagg
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops methods for planning safe and efficient trajectories for autonomous vehicles operating in environments containing adversarial and environmental threats with uncertain parameters. The central objective is to quantify and control the risk of adverse events--such as interception or detection--when threat characteristics are imperfectly known. To address this challenge, probabilistic weapon engagement zone (PEZ) models are introduced to estimate the likelihood of violating adversarial engagement constraints under uncertainty in pursuer state and capabilities. Multiple computational strategies are developed for PEZ evaluation, including first-order sensitivity-based approximations, Monte Carlo estimation, and neural-network surrogate models. These approaches enable rapid engagement-probability assessment and …

Toward The Salmon Prize: A Computational Certificate For The M5, M6, And M9 Equation Families Of Σ4(P3 × P3 × P3), John Trevino
Theatre Faculty Publications
We present a computational certificate for three families of explicit polyno- mial equations whose zero locus contains the fourth secant variety σ4(P3×P3×P3) inside P63. The three families are: 192 degree-5 Strassen commutation equa- tions (M5); 160 degree-6 equations lifted from the Bates–Oeding generators of σ4(P2 × P2 × P3) via the Landsberg–Manivel–Friedland theorem (M6); and 64 degree-9 Ottaviani 9 × 9 determinant equations (M9). All 416 generators are explicit polynomials in the coordinate ring Z[Zijk | i, j, k ∈ {0, 1, 2, 3}]. We verify by exact integer arithmetic that every generator vanishes on rank-4 test tensors (six independent …

Computational prediction of allosteric binding sites in protein structures remains a persistent challenge, as these regulatory pockets evade detection by both sequence-based and structure-based algorithms. Both computational and physical origins of this predictive asymmetry remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we systematically examine the determinants of binding site predictability using a dual framework that integrates a fine-tuned protein language model and the structure-based method P2Rank as complementary tools probing a diverse data set of 453 human kinases, together with a physics-based interpretability layer derived from energy landscape frustration analysis. Both predictors exhibit a sharp and reproducible dichotomy on protein kinases, …
