System And Method For Relational Matching Using Non-Presentational Behavioral Signals With Pre-Exposure Bilateral Model Correction, Joseph Jm Walker May 2026

System And Method For Relational Matching Using Non-Presentational Behavioral Signals With Pre-Exposure Bilateral Model Correction, Joseph Jm Walker

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure establishes prior art for a computer-implemented system and method for privacy-first, values-aligned relational matching and community formation. The system is defined by a fixed operational sequence: private reflection, behavioral observation, simulated interaction modeling, bilateral correction, and conditional identity revelation. Behavioral modeling is performed on non-presentational behavioral signals—user-generated data produced in the absence of a perceived audience—thereby reducing incentive for strategic self-representation and mitigating data distortion common in existing social and dating platforms.

A Behavioral Pattern Recognition Engine (BPRE) generates compatibility distributions grounded in established relational research frameworks. A Simulation and Correction Interface (SCI) presents interpretive models of potential …

Effect Of Parkinson’S Disease On The Lateralization Of The Digastric Muscle In A Rodent Model, Estelle Richardson, Francois Gould May 2026

Effect Of Parkinson’S Disease On The Lateralization Of The Digastric Muscle In A Rodent Model, Estelle Richardson, Francois Gould

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

In Parkinson’s disease, the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra can cause dysphagia, which affects all phases of swallowing. In swallowing, bilateral pairs of muscles under the control of independent unilateral neural mechanisms must simultaneously activate to coordinate their movements and produce a swallow. However it is unknown how Parkinson’s disease impairs the activation of the right and left sides of those muscles. In this study we tested how Parkinson’s disease impacts the lateralization of the digastric muscle in rats. We hypothesized that Parkinson’s disease will cause a difference in activation of the right and left digastric muscles …

Becoming Mandan: The Collaborative Life History Of Robert O’Brien, Douglas D. Meigs May 2026

Becoming Mandan: The Collaborative Life History Of Robert O’Brien, Douglas D. Meigs

Sociology and Anthropology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis examines how separation from—and later discovery of—an Indigenous family and culture shapes ethnic identity formation. Grounded in Charles Horton Cooley’s theory of the looking-glass self, it uses collaborative life history methodology to analyze the process of Indigenous identity formation experienced by Robert O’Brien, a Native American orphan who discovered his Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) heritage as an adult. Drawing on two decades of reflexive research, unstructured interviews, participant observation, and archival documents, the case study shows how O’Brien’s sense of identity developed in response to shifting and often contradictory social mirrors.

Financial Literacy And Kentucky House Bill 342, Rebecca J. Futrell May 2026

Financial Literacy And Kentucky House Bill 342, Rebecca J. Futrell

Honors College Theses

This study examines the correlation between taking a financial literacy class in high school and an individual’s actual financial literacy. It is inspired by the recent Kentucky House Bill 342, which mandates that a financial literacy class be taken during high school. According to recent studies, Generation Z scores the lowest on a financial literacy index among the past three generations. To address this, many U.S. states have introduced mandatory financial literacy classes in K-12 education. In 2025, Kentucky joined the 30 states that mandated a financial literacy class for a high school diploma. The Kentucky House Bill 342 selects …

Supporting Multilingual Learners’ Reading Comprehension Through Explicit Instruction In Oral Language, Vocabulary, And Comprehension Strategies, Bailey Groat May 2026

Supporting Multilingual Learners’ Reading Comprehension Through Explicit Instruction In Oral Language, Vocabulary, And Comprehension Strategies, Bailey Groat

Masters Projects

Multilingual learners in the United States consistently underperform in reading comprehension compared to monolingual peers, which is due to limited oral language proficiency and academic vocabulary. This academic achievement widens across grade levels, which emphasizes the need for instruction that integrates language development with literacy. This project designs an instructional model to support reading comprehension in upper elementary classrooms through explicit instruction, academic vocabulary, and structured oral opportunities. This project is grounded in the theories of sociolinguistic and social constructivist theories. Additionally, this project includes low-preperation and practical materials for general education teachers. Although this project has not been implemented, …

Data-Driven Analysis Of Lecture Capture Transcript Accuracy Of The Biomedical Foundations Course Using Automated Speech Recognition, Eleni Papadopoulos, Shaniece Lawrence, Steve Garwood, Dawn Shell, Jacqueline A. Giacobbe

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

To increase the accessibility and utility of lecture capture recordings, schools may utilize automated speech recognition (ASR) to generate closed-captions and transcripts. But, how accurate are these systems? This study analyzed 50 ASR-generated transcripts using word error rate (WER) and further sought to determine factors that impact accuracy. Only 19 of 50 (38%) transcripts met the 99% accuracy standard required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The lecturer's accent was the most significant factor affecting accuracy, though medical jargon also presented a challenge. These findings suggest system improvements and manual review are necessary to ensure students receive accurate information.

Methadone-Associated Qt Prolongation: The Importance Of Early Recognition And Monitoring In The Emergency Department, Uma Murrugappan, Kelsey Murray, James Espinosa Md, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We report a case of a 43-year-old female with cervical cancer and bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy tubes receiving high-dose methadone maintenance therapy who presented to the emergency department with bilateral flank and abdominal pain. She denied cardiac symptoms. Electrocardiogram obtained during evaluation revealed marked QT prolongation (QTc 596 ms) following recent methadone dose escalation. The patient was placed on continuous cardiac monitoring and intravenous magnesium was ordered. While intravenous access was being obtained, she developed polymorphic ventricular tachycardia consistent with torsades de pointes and became pulseless. Advanced cardiac life support was initiated including defibrillation and magnesium administration, with return of spontaneous …

Case Report: Termination Of Svt Using A Modified Vagal Maneuver With A 10-Cc Syringe, Romina Noormohammadi, Kelsey Murray, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a common cardiac arrhythmia encountered in emergency departments and is characterized by a rapid regular rhythm originating above the ventricles. Initial management of hemodynamically stable SVT typically includes vagal maneuvers followed by pharmacologic therapy such as adenosine if non-pharmacologic methods fail. However, vagal maneuvers are frequently unsuccessful due to improper patient execution or insufficient vagal stimulation. We present the case of a 76-year-old female with a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hypertension (HTN), and hyperlipidemia (HLD) who presented with palpitations and was found to have SVT at 156 beats per minute on electrocardiogram. A Valsalva …

Surviving Ph 7.0: Rapid Interprofessional Collaboration In Severe Metformin-Associated Lactic Acidosis With Refractory Shock, Karl J. Schlicht Md, Amaani Faizal, Vincent Macolino, Julian Coz

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is a rare but life-threatening complication with mortality rates of 30-50%. Although metformin is the most widely prescribed antidiabetic medication, severe MALA requiring emergent hemodialysis remains uncommon, with an estimated incidence of 2-9 cases per 100,000 patient-years. Risk factors include acute kidney injury, dehydration, and tissue hypoxia. Early hemodialysis initiation is independently associated with improved survival. This case highlights how rapid interprofessional collaboration from the emergency department to the intensive care unit enabled in a patient presenting with profound acidemia and survival multiorgan dysfunction

Brief Review : Listening Closely--Stethoscopes, Hygiene Gaps, And The Unfinished Work Of Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention, James Espinosa, Swet Patel, Robin Lahr, Sergey Medlenov, Russell Mordecai, James Lee, Alan Lucerna, Henry Schuitema May 2026

Brief Review : Listening Closely--Stethoscopes, Hygiene Gaps, And The Unfinished Work Of Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention, James Espinosa, Swet Patel, Robin Lahr, Sergey Medlenov, Russell Mordecai, James Lee, Alan Lucerna, Henry Schuitema

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a persistent patient safety challenge. While hand hygiene has received sustained institutional focus, stethoscope hygiene remains inconsistently addressed despite longstanding evidence of contamination. Stethoscopes function as portable, patient-to-patient devices that may serve as under-recognized fomites in emergency and inpatient settings. Prior pilot work demonstrated that clinicians were unable to reliably distinguish between disposable and standard stethoscopes, and that perceived acoustic degradation from a diaphragm barrier was minimal. These findings suggest that acoustic concerns may not represent a primary barrier to hygiene-enhancing strategies. This brief review examines the literature surrounding stethoscope contamination and cleaning behavior, frames the …

Stroke Mimics And Stroke Chameleons: Leveraging The False Positive/False Negative Diagnostic Schema In Resident Teaching, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background

Stroke mimics and stroke chameleons contribute significantly to diagnostic uncertainty in Emergency Medicine. Traditional teaching often relies on enumerating examples, yet residents struggle to internalize these distinctions.

Objective

To present a conceptual teaching framework that maps stroke mimics to false positives and stroke chameleons to false negatives, leveraging pre-existing diagnostic schemas.

Methods

Using representative cases—including hypoglycemic hemiparesis and spinal epidural lipomatosis presenting as stroke mimic—we developed an explanation for residents involving framing mimics as false positives and chameleons as false negatives.

Results

Framing mimics as false positives and chameleons as false negatives activates existing learner schemas related to sensitivity …

Background Accurate femoral bone landmark identification is essential for orthopedic surgical planning, deformity correction, and fracture risk assessment. Radiography offers accessibility and low cost, while CT provides superior spatial resolution and three-dimensional visualization. Despite technological advances, no quantitative synthesis has compared these modalities specifically for femoral landmark identification.

Hypothesis CT provides superior measurement accuracy and interobserver reliability compared to radiography for femoral bone landmark identification.

Methods Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, Embase, Scopus, and PubMed were searched from 2015-2025. Studies comparing radiography and CT for femoral landmark identification with quantitative outcomes were included. Dual-reviewer screening of 604 records yielded 27 studies …

Phytomining Potential Of Native Rocky Mountain Plants, Halle Cogley May 2026

Phytomining Potential Of Native Rocky Mountain Plants, Halle Cogley

Honors Theses

Standard mining practices of the past have left valuable, critical minerals remaining within mine waste and tailings piles. Phytoremediation, or the use of plants to uptake and store heavy metals, has grown in popularity for these sites. A new technology, phytomining, is being developed that not only offers the benefits of phytoremediation but also allows a new pathway to extract and generate revenue from these untouched critical minerals. Certain plants have been identified as hyperaccumulators with the ability to bioaccumulate a high level of certain minerals in their plant tissue. This study explored different species of native plants within the …

When Malingering Is Suspected: A Structured Clinical Framework For Assessment And Documentation, Thomas Sim, Timothy Wong May 2026

When Malingering Is Suspected: A Structured Clinical Framework For Assessment And Documentation, Thomas Sim, Timothy Wong

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

When Malingering is Suspected: A Structured Clinical Framework for Assessment and Documentation

BACKGROUND:

Distinguishing malingering from primary psychosis remains a common challenge across all psychiatric settings from emergency, consult-liaison, and to inpatient units. According to DSM-5-TR, malingering is defined as the intentional production of false or grossly exaggerated physical or psychological symptoms motivated by external incentives. Despite its prevalence, many clinicians receive limited formal training in its systematic assessment. Misidentification carries a bidirectional risk, as falsely labeling a genuinely psychotic patient as malingering may deny treatment whereas failure to detect malingering may result in misallocation of resources. Reliance on …

Optimization Of Refolding, Purification, And Analytical Characterization Of Proinsulin(F25d) Soluble Antigen Array Immunotherapy, Abigail Richardson May 2026

Optimization Of Refolding, Purification, And Analytical Characterization Of Proinsulin(F25d) Soluble Antigen Array Immunotherapy, Abigail Richardson

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is characterized by autoreactive immune responses to insulin and its precursor, proinsulin. Soluble antigen arrays (SAgAs) displaying the metabolically inactive proinsulin variant, proinsulin(F25D), represent a promising antigen‑specific immunotherapy candidate for T1D. However, the production of these platforms is hindered by substantial practical challenges, including protein aggregation, inefficient refolding, and the lack of sensitive analytical tools to verify quality and dosage. This work establishes an integrated, scalable pipeline for the purification, conjugation, and quantification of a proinsulin(F25D) SAgA. First, we optimized the refolding of recombinant methionine-proinsulin(F25D) (M-PI(F25D)) from inclusion bodies using controlled buffer systems and created a …

The Effects Of Misinformation And Source Credibility On False Recall In College Students, Ashlee Smolenski May 2026

The Effects Of Misinformation And Source Credibility On False Recall In College Students, Ashlee Smolenski

Honors Capstones

Eyewitness testimony if often treated as strong evidence in legal systems, yet psychological research consistently shows that memory is not a perfect recording of events. Instead, memory is reconstructive and vulnerable to distortion. The present study examined whether exposure to misleading post-event information and differences in perceived source credibility would influence false recall in college students. Using a 2 x 2 factorial design, participants watched a brief video of a car accident and later received either misleading or neutral questions presented by a high credibility (police officer) or low credibility (elderly man) source. It was predicted that misinformation would decrease …
