Responding To Trauma: A Theology Of Healing Ministry, Brendan Barnicle Aug 2022

Responding To Trauma: A Theology Of Healing Ministry, Brendan Barnicle

New Horizons

A theology of healing ministry is fundamentally relational, and it suggests that humans can honor God and the imago dei by assisting and supporting each other after traumatic experiences. Considering theology through the lens of healing ministry demonstrates the need for recognizing healing as one of the ongoing possibilities and eschatological imaginings of Christ’s churches. By embracing a theology of healing ministry, churches can model and foster the healing that is needed by all of creation.

Rooted In The Earth: An Igbo Sacramental Nature Of The Universe, A Model For Igbo Christian Ecological Ethics, Kenneth Oguzie May 2022

Rooted In The Earth: An Igbo Sacramental Nature Of The Universe, A Model For Igbo Christian Ecological Ethics, Kenneth Oguzie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contemporary Igbo society faces a lot of challenges. These include political, religious, and moral crises. These crises affect the environment in many ways. They threaten the peace and harmony of the Igbo society. As a result, it touches on faith. The Igbo society holds a holistic view of life. Whatever affects one aspect of life affects the other areas. Ecologically, various factors are responsible for the crises. These include changes in lifestyle from the traditional way of living to modern style of life with its penchant on consumerism. Also, colonialism and its lingering residues, civil unrests, politics, population growth, …

The Son Of Man Film As A Cry For Justice: A Cross-Cultural Convergence Of Film And The African Theological Struggle For Liberation, Mark Ngwenya May 2022

The Son Of Man Film As A Cry For Justice: A Cross-Cultural Convergence Of Film And The African Theological Struggle For Liberation, Mark Ngwenya

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This thesis studies the 2006 South African film Son of Man as a cry for justice in the African context. Existing at the confluence of art, film, and theological reflection, this thesis develops new insights into concrete problems which Africans face like anthropological poverty. My central argument is that the film Son of Man is a cry for justice in a context of gross corruption, indiscriminate apportionment of resources, and a failure to address the real plight of the poor people living in slum areas.

Following the art and theology of Engelbert Mveng, I open the Christological discussion with the …

The Spiritual Care Protocol: Developing Informed Responses To End-Of-Life Concerns, Gabriel Fisher

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the understanding and practice of spiritual care in a nonprofit hospice. The identified problem this project seeks to resolve is a lack of a protocol to continually assess the spiritual concerns of patients and families on service with this organization. The purpose of this project intervention is to develop a protocol document that assesses spiritual concerns and helps members of an interdisciplinary team offer more informed responses to spiritual care needs. The project has multiple intents in that it will also help address a gap in organizational awareness and seek to enhance current care practices and understandings. …

On The Task Of Today's Theologian, Henry O. Widdicombe Apr 2022

On The Task Of Today's Theologian, Henry O. Widdicombe

Obsculta

This piece was written as a reading response paper for Kristin Colberg’s Documents of Vatican II course in the Spring of 2022. It argues that today’s theologian must take seriously the demands of the Second Vatican Council and that the task of the theologian is, in light of contemporary culture, offer an ever-new articulation of the Gospel of Christ Jesus that does not lose its ever-ancient truths. In that vein, the piece utilizes the assigned readings for a particular course meeting to, with the aid of Bernard Lonergan, outline a kind of pro-Vatican II panegyric.

Kwame Bediako Makes An Offer, Joel Carpenter Mar 2022

Kwame Bediako Makes An Offer, Joel Carpenter

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This review essay addresses the major themes of Ghanaian theologian Kwame Bediako’s thought, as presented in Tim Hartman, Kwame Bediako: African Theology for a World Christianity. Bediako advocated examining the traditional spirituality of African peoples, studying the Bible in vernacular languages, and asking how the person and work of Jesus Christ engage local cultures. He insisted that Western theology was not central and normative to the Christian faith, and that African theology provided a better model for the development of contextual theologies worldwide.

Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo Feb 2022

Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

There is a developing trend within mainstream South African Churches to incorporate styles of traditional African music and cultural elements in liturgical functions. This is happening in places where such ideas were hitherto unwelcome because mission churches witnessed the denigration of indigenous African cultures by Europeans during the eras of both colonialism and apartheid. Inculturation Theology underscores the current drive for liturgical transformation. It comprises a part of Black Theology in South Africa, which developed as an intellectual framework for liberation during the time of the anti-apartheid struggles. Using the ethnographic study of the cultural mass at Emmanuel Cathedral in …

The Fabc Vision Of Dialogue As An Appropriate Approach For The Catholic Church In Vietnam In Its Mission Of Evangelization Today, Hoan Chinh Tran Jan 2022

The Fabc Vision Of Dialogue As An Appropriate Approach For The Catholic Church In Vietnam In Its Mission Of Evangelization Today, Hoan Chinh Tran

Loyola Papers

This article views dialogue as a way to bridge the gap between the Catholic Church and the State in Vietnam, created by centuries of colonization and conflict and resurfacing periodically as tensions with the Communist government, despite the steady growth of the local Church in the country. Mining the FABC documents for its rich insights on the theology of dialogue, he proposes it as a viable approach characterized by three foundational elements: embracing dialogue not only as a methodology but as an approach or overall disposition, maintaining a humble attitude of receptivity and openness, and trusting in the immanence and …

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr. Jan 2022

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.

Loyola Papers

Advocating the crafting of inculturated catechisms, this paper calls for a pedagogy of faith built not from the desks of catechetical authorities but from the ground. In this pedagogical renewal, necessitated by changing times and circumstances, the paper finds a rallying point and guiding principle in the FABC’s call for inculturation understood as “dialogue.” At the same time, it identifies a number of ongoing challenges that hinder this process, including notions and methodologies of inculturation that can be unilateral and amount to a kind of imposition on the receiving culture, which possesses its own customs and practices. The paper then …

Doing Contextual Theology: Standing Meditation As An Instrument For Missionary Evangelization In Today’S Vietnam, Nguyen Huy Quyen Jan 2022

Doing Contextual Theology: Standing Meditation As An Instrument For Missionary Evangelization In Today’S Vietnam, Nguyen Huy Quyen

Loyola Papers

This paper is an analysis of what has become a distinctly Vietnamese Lenten popular devotion first introduced by the French Jesuit, Fr. Alexandre de Rhodes, in the 17 th century. It highlights the important qualities of “standing meditation” and its great potential in evangelizing the people of Vietnam. What seems initially as a very external or even theatrical activity emerges as a concrete way of internalizing faith and empowering believers to imitate Christ’s self-giving love, as told in the very colorful and compelling narration of his Passion and Death. Moreover, the paper underscores the contribution of “standing meditation,” both actual …

Charism Formation In Dominican Institutions Of Higher Education, Jennifer E. Schaaf Op

Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects

Using a qualitative approach, this research project examined the practices of charism formation and mission education at institutions of higher education founded by Dominican Sisters in the US. Broad surveys of those in roles responsible for mission at the institutions were followed by select site visits—conducted in person and virtually—and interviews. Websites and published materials about the institutions, curriculum, visible signs on campus and activities that are integral to the mission were examined as part of this project. As the number of Dominican Sisters available to serve in their founded institutions decreases, this research may provide a path forward in …

Encountering Grace: A Theological Framework For Faculty And Staff Immersion Programs, John T. Sebastian Ph.D. Nov 2021

Encountering Grace: A Theological Framework For Faculty And Staff Immersion Programs, John T. Sebastian Ph.D.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Many international and domestic immersion programs for faculty and staff at Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States have in common the goal of promoting participants’ solidarity with poor and marginalized populations. These programs often understand solidarity as a pedagogical instrument: direct contact with human suffering provokes a desire to think and act differently in order to redress various forms of social inequity. This essay proposes that immersions can and should also be opportunities for engaging faculty and staff at Jesuit institutions of higher education in conversations about, and even experiences of, social grace. The paper offers an overview …
