Development Of A Spss-Based Prediction Model To Evaluate ‎Volatile Organic Compounds During Trenchless Cured-In-Place Pipe Method, Salar Bavili Nezhad

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) method is a widely implemented trenchless technology for the rehabilitation of deteriorated pipelines, offering benefits such as cost-effectiveness and reduced surface disruption. However, the CIPP installation process, particularly during curing, raises concerns over the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which can adversely impact worker safety, public health, and environmental standards. This dissertation aims to address these concerns by evaluating VOC emissions during CIPP installations and developing a predictive model to guide emission management practices.

A comprehensive field study was conducted, collecting air samples from 15 pipeline rehabilitation sites that utilized different site-specific conditions using non-Styrene …

Homiezation, Isa D. Ferris Jan 2025

Homiezation, Isa D. Ferris

Social Justice | Senior Theses

This thesis presents Homiezation as a practical framework for building transformative relationships across cultural and racial boundaries, focusing on intercultural engagement for scholars, educators, and community practitioners. Based on community research in Marin County, California, it draws on interviews with Latino/a immigrants, first-generation Latino/a citizens, and one non-Latino BIPOC community member. I coined the term ‘Homiezation’ during my community work to describe the process of fostering care, trust, and shared humanity within Third Spaces, where diverse cultures interact and learn from one another.

Six interconnected themes—showing up, trust, social awareness, cultural humility, humor, and compañerismo—form the foundation of Homiezation. These …

Watchdogs Or Lapdogs: How Audit Committees Influence Financial Reporting Quality And Cybersecurity, Yanru Yang Jan 2025

Watchdogs Or Lapdogs: How Audit Committees Influence Financial Reporting Quality And Cybersecurity, Yanru Yang

2025

With the increasing complexity of the business environment, the role of corporate governance and oversight is expanding continuously. Grounded in archival research, my dissertation consists of three studies that explore the features of audit committees in monitoring both financial reporting and broader areas, such as cybersecurity.

The first paper, co-authored with Gopal Krishnan and Wei Yu, examines the implications of audit committee (AC) director departure for financial reporting quality and audit risk. We find that the departures in the firms with most concerning AC departures are associated with a higher likelihood of a future “Big R” restatement announcement and auditor …

Digital Platform Transitions In The Finance Industry: Three Essays, Cheryll-Ann Wilson Jan 2025

Digital Platform Transitions In The Finance Industry: Three Essays, Cheryll-Ann Wilson

2025

This three-paper dissertation is motivated by an emerging dichotomy in the financial sector: an increasing use of an open-source digital platform—the Python platform—in an industry that historically has been wedded to proprietary systems.

Chapter 1 is a qualitative pilot study to ascertain which factors are likely to motivate investment professionals to select Python versus other tools and/or technologies. I find that efficiency and access to industry-specific libraries—notably Pandas and NumPy—are significant motivators in their selection of Python over Excel. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the issues through a sequential, exploratory mixed methods approach.

Chapter 2—the qualitative field study—investigates how and …

Games In A High-Dimensional World: An Interplay Between Machine Learning And Game Theory, Anargyros Oikonomou

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Motivated by the growing number of applications at the intersection of game theory and machine learning, including alignment, AI agents like automated bidders, training generative models, and high-dimensional mechanism design, this dissertation explores the interplay between the two fields. Specifically, we show how machine learning can gain insights from game-theoretic multi-agent optimization techniques and how game theory can benefit from machine learning techniques. The first part of this work focuses on leveraging game-theoretic insights to improve optimization algorithms in multi-agent machine learning. Traditional methods, such as gradient descent, often fail to converge when training multi-agent systems with competing objectives. This …

Resource-Aware Distributed Machine Learning: Unified Approaches For Private And Efficient On-Device Intelligence, Yeshwanth Venkatesha Jan 2025

Resource-Aware Distributed Machine Learning: Unified Approaches For Private And Efficient On-Device Intelligence, Yeshwanth Venkatesha

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The widespread integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into everyday life is driving a paradigm shift towards deploying machine learning models on a massive, distributed ecosystem of edge devices. While this decentralization offers opportunities for data-driven applications, it introduces a fundamental trilemma: the concurrent pursuit of high performance, operational efficiency, and stringent data privacy. State-of-the-art AI models, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), demand computational and memory resources that far exceed the capabilities of typical edge devices, creating significant bottlenecks in training and inference. Furthermore, the distributed nature of data gives rise to challenges of statistical heterogeneity and communication overhead, while the …

Intestinal Mast Cell Control Of Behavioral And Oral Anaphylactic Responses, Nathaniel Dale Bachtel Jan 2025

Intestinal Mast Cell Control Of Behavioral And Oral Anaphylactic Responses, Nathaniel Dale Bachtel

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Organisms are challenged on a day-to-day basis with the decision of what, when and how much of a given food source to eat. These fundamental decisions require sensory mechanisms that evaluate the relative quantities of desired nutrients and harmful toxins present in each food source and integration of these factors with the current organismal state. In mammals, this sensing is accomplished by a diverse array of cells types, including epithelial cells, neurons, and immune cells which communicate the value of ingested food with the brain. Moreover, the immune system can store memory of past harm a given food source was …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of varying timbres on melodic dictation accuracy. Melodic dictation is used not only in collegiate music curricula but also in high school Advanced Placement Music Theory (APMT) courses. Studies examining the effects of varying timbres on dictation are limited (Gephardt, 1978; Gonzalez et al., 2015), and further investigation was needed. Subjects in this study (N = 52) were APMT students who completed melodic dictation tasks in four timbres: Bb clarinet, Bb trumpet, piano, and marimba. A repeated-measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant difference in melodic dictation accuracy across …

Analysis Of Crowd Logistics Networks Using Agent-Based Models, Preetam Kulkarni

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Crowd logistics is a system in which an online platform connects a group of non-professional couriers (crowd/carriers), who use their under-utilized resources to offer delivery service to other individuals or businesses (senders) for a fee. While crowd logistics platforms have the potential to offer more flexible and responsive delivery services for much lower rates than traditional logistics providers, it is difficult for platforms to be successful as it is challenging to meet carriers’ and senders’ expectations. Crowd logistics has been applied in the context of food and grocery delivery, parcel pickup and drop-off services and last-mile delivery, however, it has …

An Exploration Of Ibdp Coordinator Leadership In Southeastern U.S. Public High Schools, Raymond W. Scheetz Jr.

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Along with its brand, vision, and curricula, International Baccalaureate (IB) provides member schools with requirements and expectations, such as implementing a program coordinator. However, the need for flexibility that would allow for global implementation leaves the nature of IB’s required program coordinator positions subject to local discretion in many ways. However, while increasing in numbers globally, IB Diploma Programs are still not widely implemented in public high schools throughout the U.S. Southeast. As a result, the position of an IBDP coordinator is unusual in such schools in the region. Also, the IBDP coordinator position has not been substantially defined or …

The Impacts Of Land Use And Groundwater Inputs On Stream Health And Habitat Of Jennings Creek, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Allison Francis

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Jennings Creek watershed encompasses the entire city and surrounding area; however, little work has been completed focused on assessing the Creek’s water quality, habitat, and biological indicators. Jennings Creek is fed by several karst groundwater springs, making it highly vulnerable to contamination due to the rapid connection between the surface and subsurface via sinkholes and underground rivers. An examination of Jennings Creek’s water quality, habitat, and biological indicators provides an assessment of the watershed’s health.

The methodology closely followed the methods for assessing habitat by Kentucky’s Energy and Environment Cabinet and was approved for the …

"The Perfect Storm": Weathering Black Racial Trauma Across The Lifespan And The Impact Of Covid-19, Taryne M. Mingo, Kiauhna Haynes

Adultspan Journal

Descendants of Africans Enslaved in the United States (DAEUS), who lived in the South prior to 1965 and experienced decades of legalized discrimination, were found to have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Arline Geronimus (1992) coined the term “weathering” to acknowledge the accumulation of racial trauma stored within the body over extended periods of time. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study, aligned by the tenets of Critical Race Theory, explores how continuous racial trauma impacted DAEUS citizens’ well-being and trust in the COVID-19 vaccine. Three Group Experiential Themes emerged during this study, all connected with the experiences …

Hine’s photography is not only a pictural historical reference but when read in its entirety many more historical insights become visible. Evaluating Hine’s photography from Ellis Island, The Pittsburgh Survey and …

World As Other, World As Self: Beyond Dualism In Environmental Narratives, Tamara Wallace Ramirez Jan 2025

World As Other, World As Self: Beyond Dualism In Environmental Narratives, Tamara Wallace Ramirez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Stories of place matter to the way we live with the Earth. A dualistic perspective that pits "culture" against "nature" enables environmental degradation on small and large scales. Conversely, understanding humans and nonhumans as entwined allows us to think and act differently with our planetary community. This view entails integrating the "self" and the "other." Instead of being antithetical to the other, the self arises through engagement with others, human and nonhuman. Understanding our mutuality with others while respecting their alterity and agency fosters caring and dedication. Our sense of connection with the more-than-human world inspires our compassion. However, such …
