Why Ai Monitoring Faces Resistance And What Healthcare Organizations Can Do About It: An Emotion-Based Perspective, Karl Werder, Lan Cao, Eun Hee Park, Balasubramaniam Ramesh

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Continuous monitoring of patients' health facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the quality of health care, that is, the ability to access effective care. However, AI monitoring often encounters resistance to adoption by decision makers. Healthcare organizations frequently assume that the resistance stems from patients' rational evaluation of the technology's costs and benefits. Recent research challenges this assumption and suggests that the resistance to AI monitoring is influenced by the emotional experiences of patients and their surrogate decision makers. We develop a framework from an emotional perspective, provide important implications for healthcare organizations, and offer recommendations to help reduce …

Research Days Posters 2025

The sensory drive hypothesis proposes that signals evolve to be most effective in their respective environment, and that the receiver’s sensory systems in that environment should evolve to match those signals. Differences in sexual signals and sensory systems in adjacent habitats may operate as isolating mechanisms. Male Anolis lizards have brightly colored dewlaps that they use for communication. Anolis aquaticus, a Costa Rican species that exhibits intraspecific variation, was studied as populations’ dewlaps vary in redness or yellowness. It is hypothesized that this variation is shaped by sensory drive and facilitates species isolation in A. aquaticus. Visual modeling was used …

Affirming Trans Rights: Oppression And Resiliency In Lgbtq Digital Activism, Samantha Boragine

Research Days Posters 2025

Social media can build community and empower individuals to speak freely, but does it continue to do so when those in power disagree with the message? The current U.S. administration, led by President Trump, aimed executive orders at transgender people (ex. only recognizing two sexes fixed at birth, defunding programs promoting “gender ideology”, defunding gender-affirming care) in order to delegitimize and demonize their existence. Following this trend, corporately owned social media platforms such as Facebook changed their content moderation policies. Despite this, LGBTQ activists continue to promote and affirm their right to existence, often utilizing open source platforms such as …

The Soundtrack Of Life: A Foray Into The Ontology Of Musical Works, Emilio Kershner Jan 2025

The Soundtrack Of Life: A Foray Into The Ontology Of Musical Works, Emilio Kershner

Research Days Posters 2025

Historically, classical music has been the domain of compositions and jazz the realm of performance, but the question “what kind of entity is the work in rock music?” has caused some doubt. Strong cases have been made for rock’s claim to recordings, songs, and live performances. This paper will show how disagreements over the ontology of rock give cause to question the very method of constructing higher-order ontologies because of two problems: that of category overlap and that of form/genre conflation. It will be argued that the category overlap problem challenges existing rock ontologies while the form/genre conflation problem gives …

Research Days Posters 2025

Damon Salvatore, Chuck Bass, Loki. Across much of today’s favorite teen and young adult television, viewers seem to favor villains or anti-heroes over typical protagonists. Paradoxically, unsavory characters offer a depth, inviting a great human curiosity and thereby empathy. Viewers often identify with villains in their darkness, whether intentionally or not. This research contextualizes this phenomenon within broader discussions of social media due to the encouragement of digital over face-to-face interactions. Over time, society has become desensitized to crises ranging from personal relationships to global matters with the rise of social media usage, which disconnects individuals from tangible consequences. Therefore, …
