A Quality Improvement Project To Assess The Impact Of A Patient Acuity Tool On Nurse Satisfaction In Equitable Patient Assignments In Nurse Workload And Perceived Quality Care Provided, Claire Alexandra Rodgers Jan 2025

A Quality Improvement Project To Assess The Impact Of A Patient Acuity Tool On Nurse Satisfaction In Equitable Patient Assignments In Nurse Workload And Perceived Quality Care Provided, Claire Alexandra Rodgers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background: Traditional nursing staffing models used to create patient-care assignments do not account for patient acuity. As patient acuity increases, nurse workload increases. When patient-care assignments do not account for acuity, nurses are unable to provide quality care to patients. Utilizing a patient acuity tool (PAT) has been shown to improve nurse satisfaction and equity in assignments while also enhancing the ability for nurses to provide quality care.

Purpose: The project aims to assess the impact of a PAT to improve nurse satisfaction in equitable patient assignments based on nurse workload and perception of quality of care provided to patients …

Influence Of Different Rates Of Biochar And Deer Browsing On Pollinator Plant Productivity, Bipana Bhusal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced from biomass, has received wide attention for soil amendment to improve plant growth. However, its specific effects on pollinator friendly plants remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of four biochar application rates (0, 10, 20, 40 tons/acre) and deer exclusion (fenced vs. unfenced) on the productivity of three pollinator species; Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria), and Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) in a utility right of way with a history of mining. A split-plot randomized design was used, and the results were analyzed using …

A New Electronic Handoff Tool To Facilitate Patient Transfer From The Or To Sicu: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Kaylan Jean Kerrigan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction/Background: Transfer of care is a vulnerable time for patients. Continuity of care depends on good communication from the transferring team to the receiving team. Communication failures contribute to frustration among medical staff and poor patient outcomes. Purpose: The purose of this project was to improve handoff communication and satisfaction between the anesthesia team in the operating room (OR) and the receiving surgical intensive care unit (SICU) nurses. Intervention: A new electronic handoff tool was developed for the Epic electronic health record (EHR) to provide SICU nurses with patient information (name, age, allergies), procedure and diagnosis, intubation status, reversal status, …

A Critical Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Latino Male Graduate International Students Attending A Pwi, Cesar Miguel Castellon Gort Jan 2025

A Critical Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Latino Male Graduate International Students Attending A Pwi, Cesar Miguel Castellon Gort

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This qualitative study examines how Latino male international graduate students navigate identity, belonging, and exclusion within U.S. higher education. Although international enrollment has increased, the experiences of this student population remain largely invisible in research and institutional practice. Guided by Intersectionality and Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit), this study investigates how intersecting dimensions of race, language, age, gender, and immigration status shape these students’ academic and social experiences. Using a critical narrative methodology, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and identity web exercises with four participants. Employing story chaining to link individual narratives, four central themes emerged: 1) Racialized and …

Microbial And Plant Biodiversity In Appalachian Agroecosystems And Their Implications For Soil Health, Kinsey Reed Close Jan 2025

Microbial And Plant Biodiversity In Appalachian Agroecosystems And Their Implications For Soil Health, Kinsey Reed Close

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The sustainability of agricultural landscapes depends on understanding the complex interactions between plants, soil, and microbes. In Appalachia, a region shaped by complex terrain and long histories of human and ecological interaction, small family farms produce hay, livestock, and row crops. These agroecosystems, though often treated as “artificial” by many ecologists, have the potential to support both food production and biodiversity conservation if managed with an understanding of ecological complexity. This dissertation examines how plant and microbial diversity interact with soil and management to influence nutrient cycling, soil health, and long-term resilience in Appalachian agricultural systems. A literature review revealed …

"She's Such A Nice Girl": Exploring The Literacy And Identity Formation Practices Of Black Girls In White, Appalachian Communities, Tamicah Tierra Owens

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the experiences and stories of two Black girls in predominantly White Appalachian communities, focusing on the language and literacy practices they employ to navigate and make sense of their Black feminine identities. It focuses on how literacy and language skills acquired from spending quality time with their mothers, engaging in various spaces with friends, and engaging in interest-driven traditional media and/or social media helped them to analyze their communities’ and the larger landscapes’ discourses around race and gender to create and modify their desired identities. This qualitative study employs narrative case study to center the lived experiences …

Poison! An Africana Legal Studies Investigation Into Enslaved Africans And Their Deadly Roots, Angi Porter Jan 2025

Poison! An Africana Legal Studies Investigation Into Enslaved Africans And Their Deadly Roots, Angi Porter

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article is a murder investigation.

And a strange one, as the victims might be the suspects, and the suspects might be the victims. Or, even stranger, who we are calling the victims might be the enforcers of an entirely different justice system we did not initially see.

This is a cold case: we are investigating African people enslaved in the Province of Maryland during the eighteenth century. It is really a collection of cases—all cases of poisoning. These enslaved Africans were poisoning their enslavers. The incidents are described in legal records and newspapers. But what do these poisonings really …

Digital Evidence: Facilitating What And For Whom?, Rebecca Hamilton, Adebayo Okeowo

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The emergence of user-generated evidence has revolutionized how atrocities and human rights violations are documented globally. Since 2011, when Syrian human rights defenders began documenting atrocities on their smartphones, a professional field has emerged around the collection, authentication, and preservation of digital evidence. However, this professionalization has created unintended consequences, as expertise and verification power shifted away from frontline communities to Global North institutions. This Article examines this tension through two case studies: the Rohingya Genocide Archive, and Nigeria's #EndSARS movement. These examples demonstrate both the power of locally-informed evidence collection and the challenges when verification skills remain concentrated among …

Distracted But Still Listening: How Cognitive And Perceptual Load Affect Multisensory Integration, Eddie Lee Jan 2025

Distracted But Still Listening: How Cognitive And Perceptual Load Affect Multisensory Integration, Eddie Lee

Honors Theses

There is an ongoing debate about whether multisensory integration (MSI) occurs automatically and before attention is allocated or if multisensory integration occurs after attention is allocated and is subject to top-down attentional control. A recent study investigated this by manipulating the availability of attentional resources in a dual-task paradigm, finding that when the demands of the secondary task increased, susceptibility to the Sound-Induced-Flash-Illusion, a non-speech audiovisual illusion, also increased (Michail & Keil, 2018). This was taken as evidence for the role of post-attentive, top-down control during MSI. In the present study, we extend this logic to explore the role of …

Educational Behavioral Strategies For Students Who Have Encountered Adverse Childhood Experiences, Andrea J. Sullivan Jan 2025

Educational Behavioral Strategies For Students Who Have Encountered Adverse Childhood Experiences, Andrea J. Sullivan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect approximately 1 in 4 children in the United States, often resulting in behavioral and developmental challenges within school settings. This qualitative case study applied Thomas et al.’s (2019) trauma-informed framework to examine the extent to which 15 Title I elementary teachers in a rural West Virginia district implemented evidence-based practices to address trauma-related behaviors. Using semi-structured virtual interviews and a peer-reviewed protocol, data were thematically analyzed across key domains including trauma screening, interdisciplinary collaboration, positive behavior intervention systems (PBIS), cognitive-behavioral strategies, restorative practices, multitiered systems of support (MTSS), social emotional learning (SEL), and family engagement. …

Bringing Culinary Medicine Teaching Principles To Children In The New Haven Community: An Interventional Pilot Study, Rachel Lutz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Culinary medicine is a growing field dedicated to combining culinary skills and evidenced-based practices to promote health. While it has proven to be efficacious in improving biometrics for chronic diseases in adults, potential remains for its application in pediatric populations. This pilot study creates and evaluates a one-time community-based culinary medicine intervention for a mixed-age pediatric group. The intervention included a didactic lecture and five interactive stations for 20 research participants and 22 non-research participants at a community site. The intervention was evaluated for knowledge, attitudinal, and behavioral impact using pre-post surveys. Given the importance of food access in the …
