Obesity is a major public health crisis associated with high mortality rates. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) investigating body mass index (BMI) have largely relied on imputed data from European individuals. This study leveraged whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from 88,873 participants from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program, of which 51% were of non-European population groups. We discovered 18 BMI-associated signals (P <  5 × 10−9), including two secondary signals. Notably, we identified and replicated a novel low-frequency single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in MTMR3 that was common in individuals of African descent. Using a diverse study population, we further identified two novel secondary signals in known BMI loci and pinpointed two likely causal variants in the POC5 and DMD …

Background: Metformin is widely prescribed and has neuroprotective effects in animals, but its impact on brain injury after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) in humans is unclear.

Methods: This single-center retrospective review assessed patients with aSAH from 2009 to 2023, categorizing them based on pre-admission metformin use. The primary outcome was delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), while secondary outcomes included in-hospital mortality, rebleeding, angiographic cerebral vasospasm (CVS), and favorable modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at discharge and the 3-month follow-up. Outcomes were analyzed using logistic regression. Sensitivity analysis was performed after excluding patients receiving comfort care.

Results: A total of 900 patients …

Current strategies for active targeting in the brain are entirely based on the effective interaction of the ligand with the orthosteric sites of specific receptors on the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is highly susceptible to various pathophysiological factors and limits the efficacy of drug delivery. Here, we propose an allosteric targeted drug delivery strategy that targets classical BBB transmembrane receptors by designing peptide ligands that specifically bind to their transmembrane domains. This strategy prevents competitive interference from endogenous ligands and antibodies by using the insulin receptor and integrin α

Argentine Diaspora In The United States: Experiences Of Recent Emigrants And Their Ties With The Homeland, Anabela Cibele Villach Vaquer Apr 2025

Argentine Diaspora In The United States: Experiences Of Recent Emigrants And Their Ties With The Homeland, Anabela Cibele Villach Vaquer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Argentine diaspora settled in the United States. It analyzes both the experiences of Argentines who have migrated to the United States in the last decade and the transnational ties they develop with the home country as well as the diaspora engagement policies put in place by the Argentine State. The research addresses three key questions: What are the main characteristics of Argentine emigrants who have moved to the United States over the past decade? How do recent Argentine migrants in the United States construct and maintain their transnational ties with their country of origin? Is the …

BACKGROUND: Patient decision aids have the potential to lower decision conflict for patients and to improve patient-physician communication. However, uptake of decision aids has been poor, in part because the time required to incorporate these into clinical practice is not well understood.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the time required for a rheumatology clinic to implement a validated decision aid for patients with lupus.

METHODS: Using a cohort of eight implementation sites, study investigators identified the activities required to administer a decision aid. Site coordinators embedded within the clinics timed the duration of each activity. To estimate the effect of viewing the …

The red nucleus, a large brainstem structure, coordinates limb movement for locomotion in quadrupedal animals. In humans, its pattern of anatomical connectivity differs from that of quadrupeds, suggesting a different purpose. Here, we apply our most advanced resting-state functional connectivity based precision functional mapping in highly sampled individuals (n = 5), resting-state functional connectivity in large group-averaged datasets (combined n ~ 45,000), and task based analysis of reward, motor, and action related contrasts from group-averaged datasets (n > 1000) and meta-analyses (n > 14,000 studies) to precisely examine red nucleus function. Notably, red nucleus functional connectivity with motor-effector networks (somatomotor hand, foot, …

BACKGROUND: Mobile health apps can serve as a critical tool in supporting the overall health of uninsured and underinsured individuals and groups who have been historically marginalized by the medical community and may be hesitant to seek health care. However, data on uptake and engagement with specific app features (eg, in-app messaging) are often lacking, limiting our ability to understand nuanced patterns of app use.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize sociodemographic differences in uptake and engagement with a smartphone app (uMAT-R) to support recovery efforts in a sample of individuals with opioid and stimulant use disorders in the Greater …

Racism On Social Media, Britton Larsen Apr 2025

Racism On Social Media, Britton Larsen

Student Research Symposium

For centuries, racism has been an issue in society; however, the emergence of social media has drastically altered the landscape of the vulgarity and encounter of racist content. Social media has become a crucial communication, advocacy, and information battleground. While these platforms have provided a voice through which underprivileged populations become equal in terms of advocating for equality and justice, the same platforms have nurtured the breeding ground for hate messages and discriminatory ideologies. This research will look to explore the relationship between social media and racism, doing so to look at how these social media platforms amplify racist content …

Duolingo, a language learning app, has an infamous social media presence across many platforms. Recently, they took their risky humor to the next level by killing their mascot (don’t worry, there’s a happy ending!)

Their platform on TikTok typically receives more engagement from users and brands, because that is where they first went viral for their ‘threats” against users.

  • How did TikTok compare to Twitter?
  • What made this campaign so successful?
  • Can we apply anything from this campaign to others
