Relationship Between Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Inflammatory Biomarkers, And Hospital Length Of Stay Among Covid-19 Patients., Alice Aghamie Osuji

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

COVID-19 has put immense pressure on healthcare facilities, especially in managing patients with comorbidity. This study addressed the association between two important coinfections, congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and their effect on hospital length of stay (LOS) among COVID-19 patients. The study also explored the predictive role of the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) in prolonged hospitalization, also considering the influence of age and race. This study applied the Biopsychosocial Model and Chronic Care Model (CCM) to examine health outcomes and resource use. A retrospective cohort research design was used to examine medical records of …

K-12 Principals Who Persist In Their Principalship Despite Challenges In Urban Schools, Monique Nicole Durham Apr 2025

K-12 Principals Who Persist In Their Principalship Despite Challenges In Urban Schools, Monique Nicole Durham

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem that was addressed through this study is the approximately 13% attrition of K-12 principals in a large urban school district in the Mid-Atlantic region, exceeding the national average. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of K-12 principals who had persisted in their roles despite the significant challenges in leading urban schools. The study was grounded in the job demands-resources theory, which posits that job demands could lead to burnout, while job resources help employees cope with challenges, thereby fostering resilience. For this basic qualitative design, data were collected from semistructured interviews with 12 …

Impact Of Memorable Messages About Religion And Adoption, Grace Arakelian, Chloe Warren, Rachel Grimes, Zachary Davis

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

This study examines the impact of memorable messages about adoption and religion on adult adoptees raised in Christian adoptive homes. The study explores how these messages shape adoptees' emotional well-being, identity development, relationships, and religiousness. The study places the findings within existing research on adoption communication, microaggressions, and entrance narratives. Forty-one adult adoptees were interviewed regarding the memorable messages they heard growing up, their interpretations of the messages, and the impact the messages had on their emotional well-being, relationships, identity development, and religious affiliation. Using Tracy's phronetic iterative approach, a qualitative analysis was conducted to identify themes within the data. …

Meadow Brook Project: Lighting Design, Ava Bell

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

In theatre, artists come together for collaborative storytelling. Through meetings, discussions, rehearsals and tech, designers, technicians, actors and directors decide how a story is going to be told and how they can support one another during the process. Lighting design is a crucial element of that theatrical storytelling, telling the audience where to look, when to look there, and how to feel about it. Meadow Brook Theatre's production of Ella: First Lady of Song, a musical following the life and discography of Ella Fitzgerald, was brought to life through lighting. This research allowed for the creative and technical exploration of …

The Role Of Counter Electrode In Perovskite Solar Cell On Silicon Substrate To Enhance Power Conversion Efficiency For Cmos-Compatible Applications, Sameh O. Abdellatif, Eman Sawires

Electrical Engineering

This study investigates the impact of various counter-electrode materials on the overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated on silicon substrates. We examined four distinct configurations using fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) as bare cell, copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), and highly p-doped silicon wafers as counter electrodes. The results indicate that the PSCs with Cu achieved the highest short-circuit current density (JSC) of 17.11 mA/cm2, while the p-doped silicon and aluminum showed lower JSC values of 16.19 mA/cm2 and 16.51 mA/cm2, respectively. Open-circuit voltage (VOC) values remained competitive across all cells, with FTO achieving a VOC of …

Advocacy For On-Campus Occupational Therapy In College Athletics, Doyle C. Taylor, Keisa Boykin

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

This project focuses on a growing issue in college sports: the lack of accessible, specialized rehabilitation for student-athletes. Many universities rely on off-campus providers for occupational therapy, which often leads to delays in treatment, missed appointments, and inconsistent care. To address this gap, the project advocates for the integration of occupational therapists directly into athletic departments. By developing and delivering educational workshops, distributing advocacy materials, and engaging with key stakeholders, the project highlights how on-campus OT services can streamline care, improve recovery outcomes, and support both the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes. The goal is to bring awareness to …

Traumas And The Development Of Personality Disorders, Madeline Raine Marler Apr 2025

Traumas And The Development Of Personality Disorders, Madeline Raine Marler

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Whereas studies have examined associations between traumatic experiences and the development of various disorders, a notable gap in the literature persists on the impacts of trauma timing and type (intergenerational vs. personal, chronic vs. singular) on the development of psychiatric diagnoses. This qualitative study utilizes a grounded theory approach, thematic analysis, and various coding techniques to explore linkages between trauma and the development of personality disorder(s). The population referenced for this dissertation was sourced from accessible archival data, consisting of transcript dynamic intake or follow-up interviews, Traumatic Antecedent Interviews (TAIs), and chart reviews from a long-established psychoanalytic clinic. The qualitative, …

Total Intestinal Atresia In A Neonate: A Case Report., Cory Nonnemacher, Seth Saylors, Naomi-Liza Denning, Vatche Melkonian, Pablo Aguayo

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Intestinal atresias are a common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. An extremely rare variant is total intestinal atresia, where no lumen is appreciable from the duodenum through the colon. We describe a case of a 33-week female who was born at an outside hospital and underwent laparotomy for concern for intrauterine perforation and proximal intestinal obstruction. Laparotomy revealed a duodenal perforation and an atresia in the proximal jejunum. Resection of this segment revealed no intestinal lumen distally, and the patient was left in discontinuity and transferred to our tertiary children's hospital. Repeat laparotomy revealed atretic bowel with no lumen through …

Practicing Community, Cultivating Democracy -- Lessons From Professional Power Shifters, Sylvia Gale

Other Publications

Below I describe five intentional practices people working in human-facing professions can employ in order to create the conditions for a healthy democracy.

These practices were originally distilled from my observations at the Deaconess Foundation’s Helsinki D-Stations and from my interactions and discussions with professionals across the Foundation’s Civic Action and Community Programs team from January-June 2023, when I was hosted by the Deaconess Foundation on a Mid-Career Professional Development Award from the Fulbright Finland Foundation. Since then, I have augmented and clarified these practices through observation and reflection with colleagues in my American context, where I am the executive …

Advocating For Pots; A Misdiagnosed And Underserved Population, Abbey E. Zimmers, Zeida Gutierrez

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia that primarily affects the autonomic nervous system, making daily activities such as standing or concentrating difficult due to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and brain fog. It is most common in young women, often triggered by autoimmune diseases, viral infections, or trauma. POTS is under-diagnosed, with healthcare providers often unaware of its full spectrum of symptoms and the role of occupational therapy in managing daily function. Occupational therapy (OT) can significantly improve quality of life by helping patients manage symptoms and regain independence. Raising awareness of POTS and the benefits of …

The Emotions Of Uncertainty: Science, Politics, And The Social Dynamics Of Decision Making, Alisa N. Rogers

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation examines how social and emotional factors influence attitudes toward science and decision making regarding science-based policy recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic. I examine boundary work practices among the public as they evaluate experts during the pandemic and the social sources of information people used to construct knowledge. Then I examine the social and emotional factors that participants indicated influenced their own attitude formation and decisions to act regarding public health recommendations during the pandemic. I find that emotions influence each element of the decision process: information gathering, information evaluation, attitude formation, and decisions to act. Affective commitment and …

What Does It Mean To Be A Mentor? Perceptions Of Mentor Teachers In A Mentoring Program, Karen M. Powell Apr 2025

What Does It Mean To Be A Mentor? Perceptions Of Mentor Teachers In A Mentoring Program, Karen M. Powell

Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to describe a district-wide, new teacher induction and mentoring program in one metropolitan public elementary school in Georgia. Based on the literature reviewed, there is a lack of research on the effects of mentoring programs in elementary schools, and specifically the effects of mentoring on the mentor teacher. Research questions are: (1) How do mentor teachers experience an induction and mentoring program? (2) What meaning do mentor teachers ascribe to their role in new teacher induction? Data was collected from four mentor teachers through a background survey and individual interviews during the …
